      I didn't even notice the time until it was over, I was expecting at least half an hour for the video and I was pretty disappointed that it wasn't. Maybe Gamespot can upload the entire interview to their website, that would make myself and plenty of other people who want to see the thing pretty happy.

      To be fair, I wish they'd made two versions for this video, a millennial generation version, exactly like this, scratching the surface and 2 mins longer than their average attention span and then a regular human version, anywhere between 20 and 40 minutes long, that you can sit back and enjoy thoroughly

      I just started this game last week, took ages just to learn to fly my sidewinder. Just been doing trade missions and bought a viper mk3 last night and did my first bounty hunt. This game is amazing and don't get me started on the sound effects...wow.

    • @fartex1
      @fartex1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ive been playing elite since beta, when we were still in "the pill" :p
      i remember it very clearly, how "hard" it was in a sidewinder to get anything done. but here is the thing: i was abvle to play the original elite series when i was younger, so i didnt even haver to think about buying in on this game.
      you are right, this game is amazing. it gives you a goal of hunting for those bigger ships, it actually drives you there. when i reached the stage that i owned a fully decked out fer-de-lance, though i kind of regretted my choise to buy and deck it out, wich bring me to my next point: i hopped back into my fully decked out Vulture, started bounty hunting again, and the difference between the two is amazing. ( yes i know, there are faster way to earn the credits by doing the planetary scan missions in the quince system, but whats the fun of hopping into a sidewinder, scan what you need, blow up and restart?)
      on top of that, i got tired of playing with mouse/keyboard, and refused to play on a gaming pad, wich lead me to "invest" in a HOTAS. ended up buying myself the saitek X-55 rhino, not a cheap thing to buy for only one game...
      and last but not least, last month i finally got my hands on a HTC Vive headset...
      Mind blown, is all i can say to be fair.
      just a tip: there are countless youtubers that did comparisons of ships and weapons, if you dont want to "waste time" and buy the wrong ship for what your playstyle is be sure to check them out...
      Fly safe CMDR :)

    My mind is not blown. I was expecting laser physics, thrust calculations, gravitational distortion, galactic mass distribution. All i got was 0.1g space stations, and "We used fusion". I want more content in a 5 minute long video.

    • @justinwood2
      @justinwood2 8 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      ***** I am part of that audience so clearly they would not have been unattractive to the audience. Also naming a video "Elite Dangerous Has So Much Science It will blow your mind' leads people to think that the video will talk about mind blowing science. Saying "the stations are spinning so slowly that they would only generate 0.1G" is not mind blowing. And saying "the ships use fusion" is like saying "light sabers use batteries" I want Details. Maybe talk about how may Kilo-Watts of energy that one gram of hydrogen generates compared to how much one gram of helium, and which stars provide better fuel.

      +justin wood i have access to both games, Elite dangerous and Star Citizen. Concerning complexity in physics, thruster physics, zero-g etc and regarding game content and perspectives star citizen is far ahead. Chris Roberts is going to design a mind blowing universe, and he's the only one who can realise such a task. As far as Wing Commander was formerly far ahead all other games available that time, he's going to shake the gaming world again. take my referral code STAR-53QG-BJGC when creating your account and you will get 5,000.00 UEC, the ingame currency when adding your first ship. These credits can be used to buy additional weapons, shields etc. Enjoy and have a look on it.
      Keep in mind, Chris collected last year more cash than all Kickstarters of the year together. He has more than 1 million pledgers already supporting the game, and with the adjusted Cry Engine for sure the most advanced technical base to get the job done.

    This felt like a bit of a heavy-handed edit for a 2 hour interview, oh well. I've been playing Elite just since official release for short periods here and there and it's a slow-paced, complex, beautiful game that you must work at to enjoy - there's no instant gratification, it kind of reminds me of going fishing. It's definitely not for everyone; it sticks to its guns on being a hardcore space sim and I admire the team for that.

      It's like those absurdly popular Truck Simulator games on steam, except in space, and you can also shoot stuff, and mine stuff with lasers, and it's not really very much like those games at all.

      George Barry Honestly, I'm totally okay with that. The space sim genre just isn't for everyone. It has a tendency to be complex and tedious in the name of immersion, and I fucking love that. But some people just want to shoot shit, and that's cool too.

    • @guilldea
      @guilldea 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I wouldn't call Elite dangerous a hardcore space Sim, I think orbiter and rogue system truly show accurate physics and the complex/tedious procedures that you have to do to modify your orbit or just start up your space ship, this is a cool game but, in my opinion, its not that close to hardcore simulation

    I have recently downloaded elite dangerous and have played it for about an hour or two, and let me tell you, it has a huge learning curve that you must master immediately in order to know what the hell you are doing, I figured out the basics and everything, but I only scratched the surface of what there is to do in this massive game!! I traveled to one star system to another, and even though it was very challenging to figure out for the first time, it was well worth it!!! This game is very immersive and I am itching to get back into it!! Also the game is completely playable with mouse and keyboard which is what I use! This game is awesome

    To be fair, warp drives aren't actually against science. They're a possibility, just one that we currently can't do and one that may cost extreme amounts of energy in real life. Probably energy above and beyond what fusion could deliver, probably we're talking anti-matter.

      John Smith I've heard of a mathematical model for one that may work as well. But if it's the one I've heard of, it required truly insane amounts of energy. Like a Jupiter worth of anti-matter or something that crazy. Memory's a little fuzzy on it, but I remember it sure was quite a power requirement.
      Plus of course, they work according to our current understanding of physics. Which is always somewhat questionable, since we don't understand everything. Until it can be tested to actually work experimentally...

    Oh, no. For me, the scientific accuracy makes it that much more enthralling. The super-luminar speeds, for me, are kind of the cement, iif you will, that helps seamlessly bind the worlds of science fact and science fiction. In the game, I make my living (Solo), by means of stellar cartographry. I find it to be rather zen, almost therapeutic, to jump between star systems, mapping them out. To be perfectly honest, I think that's what I would be doing in real life, were the principles of Elite: Dangerous completely true to life, and made reality. I'd get awful lonely, I suppose, but, I believe it would be worth it. So, thank you, Frontier, for making my fantasy just that little bit more real.

    1:16 "Zipping around the galaxy in mere minutes" lol that's cute, it takes at the very least a couple of irl days of doing nothing but hyperspace jumps to cross the galaxy in Elite... if you have other things to do than play Elite all day, it takes much longer. I've been to the center of the galaxy three times, and one of those trips almost took me two months (included a couple course diversions and stops to look at space vistas)

  • @BrianPaone
    @BrianPaone 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    It might have had a sciency focus back in the day, but since Horizons dropped Frontier has moved away from being scientifically accurate. For example: All Polonium stocks, assuming the most stable isotope is the only one ever found in-game, should halve every 138 days (Po-210's half-life). Also, it seems patently ludicrous for me to find things like mercury (boiling point: 629.82K) on the sunny side of planets with average temps well past 1,000K.
    It's a fun game, I guess, but I certainly wouldn't use it as the basis of any science classes - except, of course, to point out how it's wrong. Might be a fun HS class discussion.

    • @noodles1916
      @noodles1916 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Brian Paone Yeah, the vision of the game certainly has taken a dive. For example. our galaxy is actually about 50% bigger in real life than what is modelled in game, and some of the biggest stars around today aren't in-game.
      Which they haven't even comment on either, I have questioned the dev staff multiple times about this but to no avail. I just get flamed by fanboys for questioning a few design decisions. There are many other nit picky things as well. I hope they do fix it in the future.

  • @reilem
    @reilem 9 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    There is however no excuse for the 'max speed' mechanic when flying in thrusters mode. Unless propulsion is achieved through other means like some sort of mass drive or w.e there really cannot be a max speed in space, only a max acceleration.
    Also, achieving the speed faster than light can't be done in the real world. They should have said that this frame shift drive does what it says, shifts the frame of reality, and allows us move parallel to our reality faster that light. Would've been a nicer explanation imo. :P
    None the less, i play the crap out of this game and love it. :D

    • @DeathmatcH79
      @DeathmatcH79 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      The top speed is limited for gameplay purposes only which I don't think is a bad thing. Accelerating and decelerating to and from higher speeds would be a real pain. Not to mention it would be pretty dangerous beyond a certain point. I like to think of it as if space ship manufacturers put on a top speed limit on their ships for safety purposes. After all, you have an FSD if you need to go any faster.
      Also, faster that light travel theoretically IS possible, but it would require enormous amounts of energy which we can't deliver right now. I think the warp drive would be feasible in a couple hundreds of years. Too bad I won't live to see it. Born too late to explore the earth, born too early to explore the universe.
      In Elite, I think it's some sort of mechanic that puts your ship in another dimension which likely follows different laws of physics which allow faster than light travel. Not sure what the lore of Elite on FTL is though.

    • @reilem
      @reilem 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      DeathmatcH79 Light speed is theoretically possible, but not at all possible in this current 'dimension'. Light speed will probably require a bubble in space time or something because in 3D space nothing except for photons can move faster than light. If u did, many things such as time/mass get real fucked up. But like i said, frameshift drive probably does the shifting of dimensions which does allow it, or whatever. :P

    • @MKhrome

      reilem Normally i would agree, but honestly, the relativistic flight model in earlier games made combat nearly impossible to deal with without significant drawbacks. It's interesting and a minority may like it, but for the general gameplay it just didn't fit. You have to draw the boundaries somewhere after all - If you want to be totally realistic you'd have to scrap supercruise and hyperspace as well.

    I find it amusing they had that asteroid belt in the background of this video. The average distance between adjacent asteroids in Sol's asteroid belt is about two light seconds. You wouldn't be able to see two at the same time with the naked eye.

      They're working on it, if you have Elite: Dangerous Horizons you can land on any non-earth like planets at the moment. I will only assume that earth like will come later as the algorithm used to generate Citys, and various other things hasn't been fully developed.
      That being said, you can currently find alien structures out on planets currently devoid of life. This discovery has gotten massive attention across the game and various social media sites.
      Keep exploring, who knows; maybe you'll be the first person to actually FIND alien life! Imagine that title! And the gravity it will hold, as I would assume your actions after such a discovery will GREATLY mold the future of the game.
      Will you communicate peacefully? Or will you go in guns a blazin' and cause a second era of war between the Humans and Aliens? Because there has been one previously.

      +John Williams yes, focusing on planets rather than space is what you should do. That's where all the interesting things happen, as you said. In the classic space sim, space iris for the haulers and the military, like the ocean on earth. That's not super interesting...

      +John Williams Fair point. However doing ED in the way it was enabled them to be first out the gate. To test the water you could say. Other things could then be added later like planetary landings. Or to have a different focus to other games. For me both the ED first out the door, fix the paintwork after and NMS not hyper realistic visual plan both have drawbacks but also the advantage of manageability. As SC is currently showing its a fine line between big promises and tight delivery and too much and nada. Im hoping it can pull itself out of the hole and live but now with NMS launching I think the clock is against it.

    I'm really into astronomy, chemistry, physics, and just science in general, and the science in this game is just phenomenal. One thing I love the most that they did, which sadly isn't covered in this video, is how they actually made the galaxy a reality. What they did was use real-life facts, and theories to determine which parts of the galaxy have what, in terms of elements, and resources. The entire galaxy is made up of very realistic depictions of stars, planets, and everything that may be within that area. Even landmarks that astronomers know of such as our star, sol, and our system, as well as sagittarius A*, hell, even the Voyager probes are in the game too! Simulated where they should be 1,300 years in the future, which is where the game is set.

    I can address the problems in this video.
    1: FTL TRAVEL
    The ships in the game use a technology called the Alcubbiere drive. It works by contracting space at the front of the ship and expanding it at the back, creating a 'warp bubble' Nothing can travel THROUGH space faster than light, but space itself doesn't have a limit.
    2: FUEL
    As he said, the ships use hydrogen fusion for power. It can refuel either at stations, or by using a 'fuel scoop', a device which scoops up hydrogen from the coronas of stars.
    3: ARTIFICIAL GRAVITY
    Braben basically nailed that one into the wall.

    Because of the realistic scales: Planets are the size of planets, stars are the size of stars, the space between stars & planets is accurate, etc etc, it gave me a really good intuitive sense of the scale of our Galaxy.

  • @BrunoJMR

    The thing is: if you travel close to the speed of light, time slows down for you. But for the people at earth, or wherever you started accelerating from, you are still traveling close to the speed of light, So, they would see you take 4 years to travel to the nearest star. but for you inside the ship, only some minutes would pass, depending on the fraction of c you are travelling at.
    That's what special relativity says, and that's why they put wormholes in the game, so that time isn't relative to the inertial referential you are in, as that would make the game really weird and unplayable in multiplayer.

    • @MrSquishedsquashed
      @MrSquishedsquashed 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      They didn't put wormholes in the game. You have a drive that distorts space around your ship making the distances behind you longer and those in front of you shorter.
      The result it that you can get somewhere as though you were traveling faster than light be without any of the effects that go with it because you were never actually traveling FTL.

      True, but you won't be seeing anything in supercruise.. not the stars, planets and not the background. You would see a similar thing to what you see in a system to system jump, ,or what you see when Star Trek ships fly faster than light. distorted light in front of you, total blackness behind you. Which would be cool if implemented in the game, but it would make trips in supercruise a really trippy experience.

    In modern rockets, if you fly one direction and cut the engines off, you’ll still be moving no matter where your ship is pointing at. So in ED, all ships have thrusters pointing every direction to maneuver sharper than a fighter jet, fly backwards, and fly under precision when reaching a station

  • @Livinghighandwise

    That game is an amazing technical achievement; there is no denying that. However in it's current state the only part or the game that I find entertaining is combat. Elite is an excellent space combat simulation (which is a little too easy against the AI). And finding real players to battle is a rare event in a universe so large. In the area of inhabited space which I patrol, I have only encounter one other real player in the last 7 days. And the trading and mining aspects of the game are tedious to say the least. The game needs more.. I know they have seamless space to planet landings and exploration planned in the future but it can't come soon enough..

  • @guilldea
    @guilldea 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Hmmm I'm sorry, the game looks really fun but I don't think it has accurate physics, the lasers you shoot travel way below the speed of light (since you can see them move when you shoot in "pulses") the environment doesn't look like real space (asteroids belts are not that crowded at all!) there are no orbital mechanics that any accurate space sim should have (in real space you don't go to other planet just by pointing at it and firing your thrusters, you have to modify your orbit with various maneuvers).
    In conclusion, really cool game but they had to sacrifice some aspects of real space physics to maximize the quick fun and therefore the benefits. Still it has some cool winks to physics like the artificial gravity and its closer to reality than star citizen.

    • @guilldea
      @guilldea 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Wow ok, easy there, I haven´t played the game myself but I´ve been watching some gameplays, and once people get into the asteroid belts the asteroids are not really far apart, but what other things I,ve said above are fake? Lasers travel below the speed of light in a vacuum, like in Star Wars, when you want to go to a place you just point and accelerate.
      If you want to see what real space travel looks like you should check out rogue system or Orbiter and if you want to see how real space enviroment looks like you should play Space Engine.
      I,m sorry that I expresed my opinion about a game you really like but, even if its a great game, you should learn to accept its faults.
      By the way, excuse my typos since english is not my mother tongue.

    • @tyorca5854
      @tyorca5854 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Guille Arana Sorry about my reaction, but the reason in the game you just point at an object and accelerate is that it uses the Frameshift drive, where physics really don't apply. You can go at 1,000 C. And in asteroid belts it's not the entire asteroid belt, it's just tiny clumps in the more massive place where the rocks are spread over incredible distances. And yes, I know what real space travel is like, I've studied physics in high school and college. And the reason that the "pulse" lasers appear to fire beneath the speed of light is that they fire in pulses to conserve energy, but the pulses still reach the target instantaneously, you want a continually firing beam of light go check out a beam laser.

    • @KarlBarbosa
      @KarlBarbosa 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Guille Arana Actually, the pulses and beams do fire at the speed of light. You see them because the entire trajectory is lit up by split seconds of fire. There's no actual 'bolt'. It's why you can direct fire them at targets several km away without having to lead the way you do projectile weapons in the game ... it instantly hits your target when you pull the trigger.
      I'm not sure how they are handling asteroid belts ... but what you see in game for the most part are planetary rings, like what's around most gas giants. And those are for sure much much denser than asteroid belts.
      As for moving from planet to planet ... others have mentioned it, but you are not using thrusters per se, but instead using faster than light travel by warping space a la current FTL theories we have. Your ship isn't moving. The space surrounding your ship is what's moving.

      +Ryan O'Morain sound is vibration and that vibration can travel through any material. what you hear when you fire your weapons, is the vibration the weapons cause that travels through the hull, when you accelerate or decelerate or even when you go in hyperspace, what you hear is the engine (that is inside the ship) same with any event the physically affects the ship... there may be no sound in space, but there is sound inside the ship. and when it comes to external sounds, the ship's computer may be designed to give audio feedback through surround speakers based on sensor data. i.e a ship passes by in close proximity and the computer simulates the sound of it's engines to alert the pilot of the event. your guns hit the target? the computer simulates the sound of the impact of your shots to indicate a succesful hit, changing the type of sound based on whether you hit shields or hull and so on. it is proven after all that human reflexes act faster on sound than they act on vision

    Elite is cool and all, but has serious lack of meaningful content. Everything you do feels meaningless because the rewards are absolutely miniscule compared to the prices of the ships. Only real way to make serious money is trading, and that's really really really boring. You have to be really drunk/high or do something else on your 2nd monitor at the same time, like watching a movie. This alone is a huge downfall of the game, considering everything in the game is obtainable by credits.
    The devs of Elite did a good job making everything feel and look nice, and scifi accurate as well. They failed at everything else though. Rewards for various tasks are extremely out of balance, many missions are simply broken and can't be finished, there's no challanging content that gives meaninful rewards and the list just goes on and on...
    Latest nail to the coffin was the new 50e expansion. Landing on planets is absolutely pointless and you can't even land on any of the cool planets! Again it looks and feels cool but honestly the materials you get are almost worthless. Even with 25% pre-order discount i regret buying it.
    Where are all the cool features that make the game worth playing? Something like:
    - Group missions with improved rewards (Not just money)
    - Base/station building
    - Ship/Equipment manufacturing (Which can't be bought with money)
    - Unique/rare modules
    - Thargoids or something else that poses a challenge
    This game has amazing potential but the devs seem to focus on completely irrelevant things. Only cool (upcoming) feature of the expansion is multi-pilot ships, but even those will be boring really fast when there's nothing meaningful to do. All this time I've just wanted to conquer a remote part of space with my friends and have some kind of base of operations where all the cool stuff happens. The space is undeniably vast, but there's almost nothing you can find that surprises you and only reward you get is a meaningless amount of credits.

    I absolutely love this game. I have been doing a bit of everything such as trading, combat and a lot of exploring but in "solo" mode and it is fantastic. I love the amount of detail that is in the game world. Every ship has an incredible amount of detail and every star, planets, black hole and nebulae looks so real. It's like looking at the hubble deep field but now you're there. I remember the first time I saw a star and scanned it to find out that it is a massive star. I believe it was 20 solar masses and just filled up my monitor. After marveling at the it's enormous size I went to the next system and found a 50 solar mass star. Jaw drop.
    I highly recommend this game for anyone that likes the wonders of space. Anybody that has ever gazed up at the night sky and wondered what it must be like to travel thru interstellar space, this game is for you!
    Some might say it is boring and lacks content, but for me, there is a countless number of star systems for me to explore and I've only just travelled 3000ly of our vast galaxy.

    Newtonian physics is largely ignored during space combat, ostensibly for gameplay purposes. Sure, disabling flight assist makes it more realistic, but there's a sort of magical barrier for your maximum speed. All this would just allow for the more comfortable classic dogfight feel, but in the back of my mind I'd have liked to see what it was like to base a combat system around true space physics.
    Also, accelerating in the retrograde direction won't cause you to leave orbit. In fact, there really isn't much in the way of orbital mechanics at all right now, other than the celestial bodies orbiting on rails.

In the Asteroid Belt and the Oort Cloud, you can't even see the largest asteroids from its nearest neighbor, they're that far apart. If they were close enough, even the microgravity of these Asteroids would have been strong enough to pull them into a singular stellar mass over the 6 billion years since the solar system formed.

    I don't like how the computer limits your speed even with flight assists off. It's kinda strange to have a speed limitation in space when realistically you should be able to accelerate to any sub-luminal speed given enough time.... I personally just assume the speed limit is built into the flight computers taking relative distance to the nearest large body into account. It would be pretty cool though if the game also takes gravitational trajectories within a system into account. I know that level of detail in the same level as Kerbal Storage Program would be kinda lost in a universe with FTL travel within a system but imagine running low on fuel and having to park yourself in a stable orbit with whatever remaining delta V you have or imagine asking the fuel rats for priority assistance because you didn't have enough fuel to park in a stable orbit and you are falling rapidly into a gas giant.

    Actually FTL isn't that far-fetched. They have a working theory on how to do it right now. They are just waiting for a "Chicago pile moment"; ie some advance or event that will let them actually translate it from a concept to an actual engine. The problem is it requires negative energy, which may or may not exist. But the one who came up with the idea (Miguel Alcubierre) has stated that the vacuum between Casmir plates could act as negative energy.

    Scientific accuracy in a game makes it more fun, IMO. My current destination/objective is the Crab Pulsar, a "mere" couple thousand lightyears from Sol. I plan on being an explorer in Dangerous, so having a realistic diversity of star-types adds immersion for me. Yes, all the brown dwarfs get annoying when you start to run out of fuel, but it would be a real-life issue if we had FTL and ramscoops that didn't work on them. I've only encountered about a dozen blue stars, none of them being giants, super-giants or hyper-giants.
    No neutron stars yet, but with the Crab Pulsar as my goal I'll at least get to see one. After that, I plan on heading out to Sagittarius A*, the supermassive black hole at the Milky Way's core. 25,000 light years or so from Sol and I won't even be the first to get there.

    I just picked it up and I have to say I think it strikes a really good balance between realism and fun, and this is coming from a realism nerd who fucks with DCS World, Falcon BMS, and Orbiter. It's neat and I'm excited to get deeper into it.

    Going faster than light is very possible with quantum physics. While it is true you cannot move faster than light through the normal "stretch" level of space, you can move at RELATIVELY normal speed through a stretched out portion/capsule of space (the "frame" in Frame Shift Drive). The FSD maintains the constant shape of the frame around the ship and "slides" it through the normal space, instead of normal thrust (this part is proven by the fact that the engines look offline while using the drive). I'll reply to myself if I have more to add on this.

    • @happyspaceinvader508
      @happyspaceinvader508 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah... I think you're going to have to explain this one a little more clearly! If you "stretch out" space between two points (let's gloss over whether that's even possible), you're making your journey longer, which would take more time. Surely you want to compress space in front of your craft, as far as possible ahead? But then... how would this affect other objects in space, like a ship that crosses your path?
      Somehow, this seems far less feasible than what NASA are talking about, which is exploiting "warp bubbles" in space to use as shortcuts.

    Half the video about mind-blowing science, was about how unrealistic the science of traveling faster than the speed of light is.

  • @zoned7609
    @zoned7609 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    There's no law that says the speed of light is the fastest possible speed. We already know that the speed of light isn't consistent, there are variations - minor but completely quantifiable and real. That's enough to cast a shadow of doubt.

  • @ProofBenny

    The only issue I have the game is the way there is a speed limit when thrusting around , if you keep applying power to your main thrusters you would keep accelerating, not to light speed or even near light speed, but it would just accelerate to 300m/s in 3 seconds and then stop , it would continue until you reach the limit of the engines which would take years

    • @mareck6946
      @mareck6946 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      There has been no real limit in early alpha. Which had to be changed in favor for fun in dogfights and the like. There could be occasions you had your opponent on teh screen for like 2 frames while he was trying to aim on you and then swooosh already passed you by several hundred kilometers ^^ This led to somewhat non fun / tsrange fight behaviors. it also was possible that midfight somone just rammed you with 2c speed and you did not know what hit you.

  • @Amadrath
    @Amadrath 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    There is one thing left in Elite Dangerous that is IMHO scientific wrong without a good reason: Spaceships behaving like planes in sub-light space. While I understand that some things are necessary to create dogfight-like fights in space, like sensor and weapon ranges of just a few kilometers, I don't see how spaceships can have a max velocity as consequece of construction. It seems like Frontier (like any other game designer) wouldn't put it past the player to handle acceleration instead of velocity.

    I would like to know more of the science of the game, since there's very little meaningful gameplay, especially when everything you do to power play and BGS can be undone by unseen agents in private play, I have instead spent a lot more time exploring the science and grounding aspects of the game, even taking to writing and Tabletop RPG's to further enjoy the game.
    I've been working on the possible future sceicnes behind the hybrid plasma/liquid fuel propulsion engines, a possible explanation of speed limits in normal space other than video game logic such as orbital stability, G-force control etc. The fantasy science of Frame shift such as creating a similar amount of energy that a Blackhole could make to distort the gravity of nearby gravitational bodies and shift between them at a relative velocity of many times the speed of light but a local velocity not much higher than a few hundred KM/s
    Been looking into the science of shields that can absorb energy attacks simply through EM interaction and emitting plasma through magnetic containment to at least disrupt explosives though kinetic would still be an issue. Been looking into the science of atmospheric flight in space wedge ships, into SRV, into EVA, into all manner of things that are implied or included in Elite but not always do-able from a gaming standpoint.
    I've loved this game for so long because just like the Expanse, it's a believable and compelling setting, unlike space fantasy like say, Star Wars, Star Citizen or No Man's sky which are great games in their own right but don't have a grounded reality to them and thus don't fall under my tastes. Please, bring up the rest of the interview.

    Has anyone mentioned the incredibly simplified physics inside the station? Where you start rotating with the station and when you are nearing the "floor" of the station you would actually need to travel in spiral to compensate for the rotational drift of the floor? Anyway, that is a welcome simplification...

    • @kkmardigrce
      @kkmardigrce 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Just imagine that you fly your spaceship into a rotating cylinder. When you get in, the station rotates around you. What you can do is rotate your ship and it will look as though the station is stationary. But when you leave the axis of rotation to land on the inner side, things get more complicated. First of all the station floor "starts moving" (drifts) faster and faster as you're nearing the cylinder. Your rotation that in the axis matched the station's only adds to the confusion as you're now turning relative to the cylinder.
      Anyway, to make it work you'd need a runway along the curved floor (around the station) and land the ship exactly as a plane lands on the planet. Except that it is curved "up" instead of "down", but it makes little difference. After landing you'd be able to taxi due to the artificial gravity and drive to your lot.

      If you're talking about the fuel-scooping system, you must fly inbetween the edge of a star's Corona, and the point at which its gravity will rip you out of supercruise and cause an emergency stop. There are easy ways to do this, like gently approaching a star and throttling down to minimum supercruise speed (30KM/s, virtually a complete stop in terms of the actual distances of space), or you can glide towards and across the side of a star, or circle around it following the curve. Some methods are more efficient, while others are more dangerous. It's not only a really unique and functional mechanic that tests pilot skill and manuevering tactics, and also takes things like turnrate and acceleration into account, but it's a really atmospheric experience, when you're flying along the curve of a MASSIVE star and you look up and see it moving around you, ship creaking and shaking as your Frame Shift Drive forces itself to adjust for the massive gravity.

      pharohbender You're in the sun's effective atmosphere, do you know the kind of temperatures and pressures inside of a star? Even that close it's dangerous as all hell. Hell you can /literally melt your ship/ if you get too close, without even touching the surface. And the ships run off a hydrogen reactor, scoopable stars have a corona with hydrogen, it wouldn't make sense to fly INTO one, plus it wouldn't match up properly with the fuel scooping mechanic from elite in 1984.

    I've only now bumped into this video, and only recently became aware of Elite: Dangerous.
    When asked by my peers why I am so enamored with the game, my first response is that it should be looked at as a simulator and not as a game. In its design, it is absolutely structured to have a fun factor. It's not like they just throw you into space and have you flying about for years, right? But, it is rooted in as much realism as possible, to make your experience as immersive as possible. And when you believe you're in that environment and you're completing game-like tasks, you ARE in fact having fun.
    This game is certainly not for everyone. I recognize that. But, it is a game everyone should look into with an open mind and research as much as they can before making the purchase decision. Elite:Dangerous is a game that nests under the radar of the average gamer, and has difficulty explaining exactly what it offers. Mostly, because it offers so much, and all of it very different from anything else you ever laid your hands on.
    Having 400 Billion star systems to explore is the draw. Much like the draw to No Man's Sky is that its universe is procedurally generated. The same powerful draw exists here, but there is so much more, that I advise everyone to learn as much as they can. If you are excited about No Man's Sky, chances are you'll be enamored with this. And I don't say that to compare the two, I say that because No Man's Sky attracts a specific audience, and that audience is most certainly compatible here.
    As someone who was personally interested in No Man's Sky, this game has completely stripped me of caring at all. I only look forward to Elite: Dangerous expansions and Star Citizen at this point.
    As an MMO, Elite: Dangerous also gets community right. There is no leveling. Just money. Your ranks don't make you incompatible with one another. It also embraces online research, so there's no such thing as "cheating". The entire point is for the community to share information because the galaxy is so big.
    If you ever wanted to command your own ship, this is truly the closest you'll ever get, and I can't wait to get home to fly again. :)
