The true genius of this transition is how Spielberg uses the camera. As Indy describes Brody, in almost hushed reverence, the camera moves in and down, helping the description build Brody in stature. By the end of the camera move, Brody's a giant of a figure, he's filling the frame, we're looking up at him. Hard cut to a high angle, Brody small and lost in a sea of people, wandering about, yelling in confusion. It's brilliantly done.

The way the movie sells this scene to the viewer is masterful. The closing in on his face while giving this monologue and building up Marcus. The viewer is supposed to believe all this, just to find out the truth. That's why there is a short break before we cut to Marcus. Skilfully done.

Even though this scene was a bluff on Indy's part, the monologue had a huge impact on me when i saw this my senior year of high school in Brooklyn, NY. Every word that Indy was describing was what I wanted to be! Someone who speaks (at least) more than 2 or 3 languages, is well traveled and familiar with various cultures, able to adapt, blend in or "disappear" into any foreign environment! Those words shook me to my core. The following year as i started college I took up 2 foreign languages (French & Arabic) and double majored in Political Science and Anthropology. I did as many study-abroad programs my majors would allow (France, Madagascar, Morocco) and did the Peace Corps the following year before attending grad school in the UK. Now I'm an Energy Analyst based in Dubai but I watch this film once every year. It still hits me.

It wasn't those words which made you choose that lifestyle, you already had the desire. Somebody else in an other movie, or somebody powerful you met in your life could have also been the conduit, but Harrison Ford's character just happened to speak those words at that time in your life while you already felt that longing. This was just a recognition of that longing.

When I saw this as a 9 year old back in 1989, I had a dream that night that I still remember to this day, based on what Indiana hyped him up to be. I remember dreaming he actually went ahead to every next scene of the movie like a pro, he blended in, knew all the customs. And he even went to see the knight and found the grail. Then he packed up his briefcase and went back to that city he was lost in to play the part of a sore thumb. It was funny. And I still remember having that dream way back then.

I have always loved this scene. Every time im lost in some other country i feel just like this. I think im Indys version of brody but so often im the real version. But always willing to get lost again.

Elsa : It's perfectly obvious where the pages are. He's given them to Marcus Brody.
Professor Henry Jones : Marcus? You didn't drag poor Marcus along did you? He's not up to the challenge.
Walter Donovan : He sticks out like a sore thumb. We'll find him.
Indiana Jones : The hell you will. He's got a two day head start on you, which is more than he needs. Brody's got friends in every town and village from here to the Sudan, he speaks a dozen languages, knows every local custom, he'll blend in, disappear, you'll never see him again. With any luck, he's got the grail already.
[Cut to middle of fair in the Middle East, Marcus Brody wearing bright suit and white hat, sticking out like sore thumb]
