While in Berlin recovering his father's diary, Indiana (Harrison Ford) comes face to face with Adolf Hitler (Michael Sheard).
FILM DESCRIPTION:
The third installment in the widely beloved Spielberg/Lucas Indiana Jones saga begins with an introduction to a younger Indy (played by the late River Phoenix), who, through a fast-paced prologue, gives the audience insight into the roots of his taste for adventure, fear of snakes, and dogged determination to take historical artifacts out of the hands of bad guys and into the museums in which they belong. A grown-up Indy (Harrison Ford) reveals himself shortly afterward in a familiar classroom scene, teaching archeology to a disproportionate number of starry-eyed female college students in 1938. Once again, however, Mr. Jones is drawn away from his day job after an art collector (Julian Glover) approaches him with a proposition to find the much sought after Holy Grail. Circumstances reveal that there was another avid archeologist in search of the famed cup -- Indiana Jones' father, Dr. Henry Jones (Sean Connery) -- who had recently disappeared during his efforts. The junior and senior members of the Jones family find themselves in a series of tough situations in locales ranging from Venice to the most treacherous spots in the Middle East. Complicating the situation further is the presence of Elsa (Alison Doody), a beautiful and intelligent woman with one fatal flaw: she's an undercover Nazi agent. The search for the grail is a dangerous quest, and its discovery may prove fatal to those who seek it for personal gain. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade earned a then record-breaking $50 million in its first week of release.

When I was a kid and saw this for the first time, I was a big history buff and all the stories you have heard about Hitler and how the only man who could kill Hitler was himself, seeing him portrayed on screen like that it kind of gave a goosebump feeling. Even the reaction Indiana Jones is spot on.
I also think this scene mirrors how Hitler came so close to making decisions that could have won Germany the war but blew it😂

A small thing I simply just have to appreciate about this is the superb casting of Hitler and his cronies. Like they literally look EXACTLY like their real life counterparts.

Like much of what Spielberg does with Nazism, it's not a subtle point he's making: that Hitler was fascinated with the occult, but in a totally nihilistic way - he thought he could use the mystical as a weapon without really believing in it or taking the trouble to understand it. So, when he's handed a guidebook to the most important and powerful artifact in the history of mankind... of course he doesn't have a clue.

That’s Michael Sheard as Hitler, who you might remember as Admiral Ozzel in The Empire Strikes Back who gets choked out by Darth Vader. I believe this was his fourth time playing Hitler in a movie (talk about type-cast). Nonetheless he does a great job of being intimidating and comical at same time, which is not easy when you’re playing one of history’s greatest monsters.
Notice how music stops when Indy meets with Hitler and only drums are present to increase the tension of the moment...
Pure genius.
Fits in pretty well too, makes you think maybe the band is cued into their supreme leaders every movement

I also really love the use of the music here. When he bumps into Adolf, the music calms down and all you here the light drums which adds to the suspense of the scene. And then he signs it and moves in and Boom the music pops off again!

The combination of suspense and humility in the scene makes it one of my most favorite parts of the movie!
I like to think Indy was a little happy to get his signature. Not cause he agreed with him (obviously he didn't) but purely as a historian. A dark piece of history from his time

The supposedly the craziest thing about this scene was everyone was wearing real German uniforms from WW2, co-costume designer Joanna Johnston found them in Eastern Europe. All sources I could find are second hand but crazy if its true.
