      My favorite air cooled diesel is got to be JLO. Period, it runs clean, quite and it’s super efficient and easy to maintain. It’s the cheweinie of air cooled 2 stroke diesels, the Deutz and Stihl are more like a boxer dog.

    • @jlo13800

      I see nothing strang about this awesome engine. It’s simple, powerful and it does not require all the complex BS like a Detroit, cat or Cummins valved 2 stroke. I dig the dry sump throw it in and burn it off design and no valves. It’s smoother and less annoying than a poppet valved deutz or hatz 2 stroke. The jlo 2 stroke diesel is not boring like my old fart OMC rotary sled motor!

    • @jlo13800

      She’s just a plain Jain 2 stroke diesel with out all the complex drama!

      Its strange that it is both wet sump up up front and dry sump for the rest of the engine.

    Even with the separate oiler for the piston and rear main, I bet it's a VERY simple design! I wonder how long one of those would run in a generator application as long as the oil was kept up in it...any idea on RPM specs and all that? Such a cool little engine

    • @dieselgeezer18
      @dieselgeezer18 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      exactly. No carburettor, no valvetrain, no sparkplugs, no magnetos and ignition coils. Instead of spark plug and carburettor you have the injection system, which is MUCH simplier and a lot more reliable. Its also very reliable since the oil is directly fed where you want, instead of mixing it with gas and having poor lubrication, like a regular 2 stroke

    Cool! I've only seen JLO engines as 2 strokes in snowmobiles back in the '60's and '70's. Thanks!

    I was taking a small engine repair class, but it only made mention of a two cycle diesel engine. There was not an example of a this kind of engine. Then, we moved on to two and four cycle gas engines. I've been going a little nuts wondering about a small diesel 2 cycle engine. Wow!! Very cool. Can you imagine if they had a lot of these engines just lying around for easy access to test out. Then, someone comes along and says, hey lets using bio-diesel again like we did a hundred years. (I think in the early part of the last century they used potato oil to run diesel engines amongst other fuels.). This engine really gets my imagination going. Thank you. Awesome job troubleshooting and bringing this little beast back to life. If only you could experiment on it with bio-fuel. Personally, I would be a little nervous about damaging it. It's not like there is bunch of them lying around in the U.S. that we could goof around with...or is there?

    Awesome piece of history! I have seen hundreds and hundreds of JLO's in Motoski's and other snowmobiles. Think skiroule along. With Sachs engines. It's interesting to think about. Those, along with Hirth, Rotax dominated the snowmobile market in the 60s and 70s. It's funny to imagine that everyone used to be pro buy American made and Kohler was the only American engine. Cuyuna is an American company but it's a JLO as well. Rockwell was all JLO and Sachs cool history

      OMC rotary wankle was another american engine i a few of these engines to tinker with, Polaris liberty, mercury were american, you can still buy akohler engine today on a lot of equipment, Detroit Doesel is another big american 2 stroke too big for a snowmobile though.

      @jlo13800 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its got a nice high volume oil pump with external tanks. this should keep everything well lubed and the piston cooler, dry sump at its finest. I want to find a deutz single air cooled and try this:th-cam.com/video/pz83bWDwbVY/w-d-xo.html, that a honda gx converted to 2 stroke. A deutz is a poppet valve 2 stroke and they are very commen, but its easy to cut ports in the ramovable air coold jugs to make it like the JLO. A small external oil pump and a separat oil tank can be attached like this one.And fill it with castor 927 maxima.

      Powerful with a rotary exhaust trapping valve and turbo. I dig the dry sump oil pump burn it off no bullshit oil pump it has. I’ll have to try it homade on something else, 8v92 on castor 927 maxima, hehe

    Very interesting engine. I'm constantly amazed by the variety of antique engines, tractors, etc. that you own. I have a request !!! I've seen your videos of the various Doodlebugs that you have shown so far. I know that you own more, so I was wondering if you could do a video showing some of your other Doodlebugs? I've got the bug, LOL........... Actually, I'm still trying to get my 1928 Ford Doodlebug running correctly. I'm getting close. But the Doodlebug videos that you've posted are so interesting, I would like to see what else you have hiding in the barn, LOL......

      The only one I have left that actually runs is a Speedex FG made from Model A Ford parts. It hasn’t been out in 16 years. I also have a 1929 K20 Cletrac with a Brittain oilfield winch and a backfiller blade on it. The blade is raised and lowered with a hand winch. Probably been 15 years since that one was started. Time is hard to come by, but I’ll try to get those out and running again.

      I just checked out the videos of your doodlebug. You’re doing a fine job on it. The great thing about them is that no two are alike and you can pretty much do whatever you want when bringing them back to life. I forgot to mention one other doodlebug I have with a ‘28 Chevy engine and a Ford TT rear end. Also forgot I have one with a ‘32 Chevy engine. Both of these actually look like real tractors. I guess I have 7 real doodlebugs, not including the FG Speedex. Lol

    • @IronClad292
      @IronClad292 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow!! Thanks for watching my videos. They're kind of boring, I'm not very good at it, LOL....... 7 Doodlebugs!! That's amazing. Yep, would like to see the other ones as well. It's interesting that you come across so many vintage Chevy engines. I can't seem to find any in my neck of the woods. This weekend, over in Eastern Oregon, I saw a large homemade tractor/Doodlebug contraption made from a truck actually working out in a field. What was interesting is this ranch had modern enclosed large tractors working as well, but is was obvious that this homemade Doodlebug was purpose built to do something, what I don't know, LOL........

    • @The-Junkologist
      @The-Junkologist  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You keep reminding me of more doodlebugs I have that I seem to have forgotten about. Lol. Not sure if I’ve ever mentioned one I have made from a ‘26 Dodge Brothers. I also have a Cletrac W with an early automobile engine in it. It’s very rough and doesn’t run. Lastly, I have a homemade sprayer outfit that is setup like an earthmoving scraper. It articulates in the center for steering. The drive unit in the front is a shortened F20 Farmall with the front wheels removed. It’s connected by a pivoting gooseneck of sorts to an elevated Hardie wood tank sprayer. It is steered by applying brakes to the drive wheels of the F20 which cause it to swing right or left. Actually works pretty good. I had it running years ago. I should do a walk around video on it. It’s very unusual. Lol

      Get a deutz air cooled diesel and cut ports into for a 2 stroke, make a billet aluminum domed head and crankcase reed valve. Deutz has long full skirt pistons and are buil like a Klotz anyways as the are a common poppet valve 2 stroke

    • @jlo13800
      @jlo13800 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Take a deutz air cooled and cut ports into it and use crankcase as air pump and you get the same thing. I have seen s newer faynmann 2 stroke diesel with external oil tank feed. It’s uniflow with exhaust valves and lean burn to emissions compliant

    • @jlo13800
      @jlo13800 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The oil sump is separate from the engine, i like that; if you cant find a JLO just grab a Deutz or hatz and do this:th-cam.com/video/1xjz1wwaNeI/w-d-xo.html. Each 4 stroke has a potental 2 stroke that exist in the spirit world! The deutz have long pistons anyways and room to cut ports in the air cooled jugs. this could be done with a high powered pulsed co2 laser. hehe. High powered light used to make a 2 stroke!

      That is one of the best small diesels I have ever seen, the deutz poppet valve 2 stroke is not as smooth though. I have seen a faynmsn diesel with separate oil and fuel tank on an army equipment. It’s a newer strange 2 stroke uniflow with exhaust valves that powers a steam cleaner. The oil is pumped to the crank bushings and slung and burnt off with external pump like this jlo. I have yet to see it run though but looked at it last drill weekend

    • @jlo13800

      i dig the dry sump feed oiling it has. Its so much cleaner running than a splash oil prexix into the airbox from the sump detroit diesel. a Deutze diesel is a nice valves 2 stroke diesel and there is plenty of roon to cut ports into the jugs on a deutz if you want to make a ported 2 stroke oit of it. i love this JLO as it runs clean and sounds so much better than more old fart american OMC 528cc rotary. The OMC rotary is for old farts!

    It looks like the front of a deutz engine

      Deutz is a poppet valved 2 stroke, not sure, A deutz v8 makes for an awsome 2 stroke conversion project as ther is lots of room to cut any port pattern in each jug.

    Just about all the old Hot Bulb or Semi Diesel 2 strokes, were crankcase scavenged, from the smallest to the largest. So it's not that unusual.
    The Lanz Bulldog tractors are a good example of this kind of diesel or hot bulb/semi diesel. As are many early marine engines.

      What you see is actually a cover in front of the fan. The fan is spinning behind it.

      IDK is Deutz or Hatz a similar version, hell how about this volswagen 2 stroke:th-cam.com/video/kot9GYBeCJ8/w-d-xo.html, If you cant find one you make one i guess.

    This is the HATZ configuruation.. still made.. I think this company made motorcycle engines ( not diesel).

      Take a Hatz and pack in and seal off the crankcase, cut your desired port pattern, uniflow or loop with valves, pressure feed silkolene pro 2 sx or grape seed oil from walmart, run fuel injection at 1 to1 to fire every stroke and presto you just made a nice air cooled 2 stroke diesel, Deutz makes for a nice 2 stroke conversion also!

    I have a tiller with this engine, u can check my Chanel if you’re interested. The DL425 is a very very rare engine, even in Europe.

    Where’s the supercharger or turbo? Two stroke diesels can’t function properly without forced induction

      This one uses a sealed crankcase so the oiling is on a dry sump, oil get pushed to the journals, flings off and burns up.

    • @douro20
      @douro20 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a loop-scavenged engine. Forced induction is by the downward-stroke of the piston like in a 2-stroke gas engine. Lubrication is by oil injection whereby the oil is injected directly into the engine intake.

    There's is a 2 stroke, its the same as a 2 cycle. I have no clue what a "2 stroke cycle" is.

    • @The-Junkologist
      @The-Junkologist  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tom Lompa two stroke and two cycle are shortened forms of two stroke cycle. There are two stokes of the piston for each cycle.
