GM Detroit Diesel 1-71

  • This is my 1-71 that I restored a few years ago. It is a sweet runner and those who know Detroits will appreciate this we beauty. I work for the Detroit Diesel agent in New Zealand so was able to source the parts and info easily to get her to the standard it is now. I have a parts manual for it and a few spare gaskets that were made in the rebuild. Less than 1000 of these were made and I only know of 4 in New Zealand. I need to get a reverse drive tacho for it as you will see it's not going. The serial number is 171-537. According to my info it was made in 1939. I have decided to sell it. It is listed on www.trademe.co.nz.

    These little 'mouse' motors are rare as hen's teeth, especially in running condition. They were pretty unique in that they had the heaviest flywheel of the 71 series (almost half the weight of the engine at around 400 lbs.)😮 This one is the 1-71P (power take-off). They also made them with an integrated 10 kw generator (1-71G), and a marine version for small military landing craft (1-71M). The first known production was around 1938 and nobody quite knows when the last one was built, but it was somewhere around 1940. Records show that there were less than 1000 of these built and only 79 or 80 running survivors world-wide. The only engine that Detroit built that was more rare than the 1-71, was a short pre-production run of the 12V-53 that was slated for military personnel carriers and small tanks. Reportedly there were only 25 of these built, and 4 or 5 known to be running today.😉

      Speaking of rare engines. Detroit Diesel/ GMC built a small gasoline powered single cylinder generator set model A41-1 used for military vehicles during the Korean War. I own an Army tech manual for it. I have yet to find ANYTHING else on this elusive monster much less any photos or videos of one either static or running. I sense they were a severely limited run and most of not all got scrapped with the vehicles they powered. But it appears according to this repair manual to borrow alot of the components and designs from the 1-71 diesel engine.

      @@InflatablePlane Very interesting! I'm sure there's probably a lot of one-off experimental engines that got shelved before they got 40 or 50 produced.😉👍

    Thanks for the comments. Some of the gaskets are the same as a 4-71 like fuel pump, blower, water pump. others I made. The hardest gasket to get right is the head gasket and the outer surrounding gasket which are both under the head. Its important they are both the same thickness when the head is torqued up. I was lucky to have a sample and got Shuk Engineering here in NZ to make it. For the rocker cover gasket I cut down a 4-71 tin rocker cover gasket. Which gaskets in particular are you after?

    This is yet another Detroit that was a Clevend Diesel design. Don't get me wrong tho, Cleveland diesels ARE cousins of Detroits, and made by GM as are EMD locomotive engines. Funny, too, that in today's "4-stroke diesel" world, the 2 strokers are still the most fuel-efficient, and cleanest-running diesels made! Fairbanks-Morse still makes the opposed-piston diesel and it's one of the most efficient ever built! I say this "4-Strokes SMOKE 'till they BLOW UP!" 2-stroke FOREVER! I have a rare 4-51.

    Of the Detroit 71 series engines the elusive was the 1-71 that saw production from 1936 to early 1940 as in late 1940 the 2-71 began production as restoration of an 1-71 would have been challenging as original parts would have been obsolete as reproduction parts would have serious modifications to work.

    • @lowercherty
      @lowercherty 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on the part. Injectors, valves, rocker arms, the two fuel lines under the valve cover, governor (maybe), fuel pump (maybe), pistons, cylinder sleeves, rod bearings, and wrist pin bearings should be the same as any 71 series. Maybe other parts. GM sold these engines on the commonality of many parts within a series.

      If i had to hazard a guess, for powering small things like a generator set or a water pump. That little bugger will have plenty of torque to do the job.
      GM had a division called Delco Light who's main business was building little one cylinder gas powered light plants for lighting up farms. This is the same Delco who'd later be famous for its electrical and electronics used on GM vehicles until 1994.
