    OmGoddess, Dillon, I think this has to be in the top 3 shows you ever done. This has made the whole lighting problem so much more clear for me. I've been diagnosed with extreme D3 deficiency and for years have been on a high dose of oral D3. Within 3 weeks of getting my levels back to normal 90% of my health problems cleared up. And I haven't been sick in 3 yrs, not even a bad cold. I'm going to start dialing in my lighting for my snakes and Day Geckos quickly.

    Now this one I’m looking forward to watching!
    It’s worth mentioning (if it’s not in the podcast) that Fran has done considerable work along side/with Professor Gary Ferguson whom I had the pleasure of meeting at the USA AHH Conference in 2019.
    You may recognise the surname ‘Ferguson’ from what we all know as the UV Zones or ‘Ferguson Zones’.
    Great work as always Dillon!

    Dr. Baines is BRILLIANT and I think I now understand reptile lighting better, something that has eluded me when I was given information from other sources. Also, I now feel good about brining my reptiles outside every summer, as even tho they are provided UV light, (mostly snakes that "don't need" it,) I knew they were just healthier from time outside and now I know why. LOL.

    This was one of the best and most informative talks on reptile lighting. I think that I've been doing well but learned that there's still room for improvement! With respect to dawn and dusk one trick we use is to have a low wattage bulb go on in the room prior to the enclosures going on. Now I'll try to separate the lights in each enclosure to add to the effect. Always learning...

    In my opinion unless an animal lives exclusively in a cave or underground, then it needs light, lol. I don't know why people are so contentious about it on Facebook groups... Is it really that hard to at least put in a UV bulb and some type of non UV light?
    I understand not every reptile keeper has the capabilities to make completely naturalistic light setups but at least get some UV going... Reptiles are so much more active and top being "pet rocks" when they have a proper photo period 🙂.

    Excellent episode! I will definitely be rewatching this one to better understand all the technical information. When you think about how reptiles live in the wild, it just makes sense to me that it helps captive kept reptiles to be able to distinguish between night and day. I know it's controversial, but I always feel bad for reptiles that are kept in tubs. Even nocturnal and certainly crepuscular species surely must benefit from some UVB. I like that some companies have different lights for different reptiles depending upon when they are out and about in the wild.

  • @Jason-fp7vi
    @Jason-fp7vi 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Dillon I am tremendously grateful for this video.
    The number of people in reptile Facebook groups that aren't even aware of UVB lights is unfortunate. And even for those of us that do provide UVB, Dr. Baines lecture here is humbling. I'm guessing that 95% (seriously) of reptile owners aren't providing the level of lighting described here... Dr. Baines little PowerPoint was also appreciated and made things much easier to follow.
    I'm going to be watching this a second time and literally taking notes lol.
    Your conversations with John Courteney-Smith motivated me to step up from a mega ray MVB to a T5 bulb. But now I think I need to step up to full spectrum and establishing a more dynamic photoperiod rather than lights suddenly on or suddenly off

    we don't talk enough about décor and how that has an impact on basking and light placement, i have magnetic ledges a hammocks to make a row for my dragons to bask at different temps and still get the uvb at a good distance, and they use it all, we should always have a reason for anything we put in the enclosures and how that impacts the way the animal uses the whole enclosure, so it gets more exercise, that is also why it good to have the ledges like i do, they are very healthy

    Not going to lie, this video had me questioning the ethics of keeping reptiles at all! Sunlight is way more important than I even imagined, and we don't even come close... And I don't typically think along those lines, I'm under no illusions on how brutal nature can be.
    Super thankful for smart people like Dr Bains and Dr Ferguson to make captive reptile lives better! Live, learn, and do better!

    • @AnimalsatHomePodcast
      @AnimalsatHomePodcast  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know exactly how you feel!! I feel guilty about keeping reptiles captive all the time, I think any conscientious keeper feels the same way!

    • @cynthiab3168
      @cynthiab3168 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AnimalsatHomePodcast When you think of zoos 70 years ago they kept most everything on cement pads with steel bars... Horribly inadequate enclosures with no enrichment for the animals. And now zoos (especially accredited ones) do a pretty impressive job with most animals in their care! Good husbandry has to start somewhere, I suppose, and reptiles have been no worse off than any other animal humans have kept.
      But to learn about how important sunlight is to these animals and see the charts on how even a combination of lights still isn't quite there... I asked myself "Should we even be trying to keep these animals when we don't have the technology to meet their needs?" Obviously people have been keeping them and are going to still keep them, the best thing we can do is keep learning and keep advancing to better meet their needs!
      As someone who's spent many years in the horse and ranching worlds I'm pretty used to defending animal keepers. I also think people paint this pretty picture of animal life in the wild, when wild animals generally have way more to worry about than captive ones.
      Anyway, sorry for the rambling. This was an excellent podcast! I'm still trying to digest it all, haha!

    Thank you very much for this episode. It really condenses the important information very well.
    I do wonder about one specific thing though.
    Animals use UVa for night vision, but I guess not much UVa will reach nocturnal animals in enclosures in our homes...
    Is there any knowledge about how much UVa they have at night? And how we can possibly recreate that in the enclosure? Because right now I feel like they won't see a lot at night in the enclosure too because it lacks UVa at night. I think that might even alter activity levels at night (I think it would reduce activity).
    I will ask this in reptile lighting too, but wanted to open this up for conversation here too.

    Great episode. My question is if it's ok if my jungle dawn covers a lot more of the enclosure than the UV and the halogen? I have the halogen, the deep heat projector and the UV covering the left side of the enclosure but I don't think the plants would do well under the halogen so I bought the biggest jungle dawn (34" long) and I placed it in the middle of the enclosure so I could have plants on the middle and cold side of the enclosure (the enclosure is 5' long and 3' tall). It's for a royal python. The jungle dawn brightens the whole enclosure placed on the middle but when I was testing where to put it, If I put it starting on the left side, the cold side didn't get much light. How do you do it if you want to put plants in the cold side if the jungle dawn is on the hot side?

    • @AnimalsatHomePodcast
      @AnimalsatHomePodcast  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Having your JD in the middle is perfectly fine! Like you said, the flood of light from the LED bar still illuminates most of the enclosure so there is likely plenty of visual light hitting the basking area (where the halogen and the UV are illuminating). However, you can always play with it. Try sliding the JD to the warm side and see how the plants do. They may still have plenty of light to thrive.

    Western culture is tough, rational and compartmentalizing. Reductionism brought us from trees to the moon. Wanting to break an entity apart and take out its most helpful constituents is natural. How have we managed to grow plants indoors, without them ever seeing real sunlight, just by using only the parts of the spectrum needed, and we won’t be able to do it with animals, if we haven’t done it already? The presentation was excellent though, and I enjoyed it all. I remember UV guide in the past. A very helpful website that has a long time to update.

    Why is this not mentioned when it comes to picking the correct light. How does this works togheter with the UVI index? Because if i went outside in a partly cloudy day UV levels would be over a 150uw/cm2 and this was in The Netherlands so not even the tropical or full sun envirement.

    Many of my geckos do quite well with normal room temps. I have only had ~16 years' experience using Zoo Med's 5.0 UVB T8 tubes for several Phelsuma. Other geckos bask under their 25 watt incandescent bulbs. Here's my concern.
    How does the fact that vitamin D3 is fat soluble come into play when dosing? Without knowing exact details, I've been lightly dusting my geckos' crickets with Zoo Med's Repti Calcium with D3 @ roughly 1 feeding per week (+/- other supplements). In addition since 2015, in order to "build a better bug" I've fed all my crickets 24/7 with finely ground Zoo Med's Natural ADULT Bearded Dragon Food. That seems to really work!
    For years my 18 year old CB female Ptychozoon kuhli (Gekko kuhli) is totally healthy without any further dusting of her crickets at all. She does have generous calcium sac bulges on both side of her face.
    None of my geckos have metabolic bone disease.

    • @AnimalsatHomePodcast
      @AnimalsatHomePodcast  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for watching! As far as I can tell, Vit D3 is difficult to dose. Technically they cannot overdose on D3 however, if the animal has a high level of calcium in their diet they can theoretically suffer from Vitamin D3 hypervitaminosis which eventually leads to the calcification of organs, etc. I think the right move is to use adequate levels of UV and sparingly use an oral D3 (maybe a couple of times per month as you are doing).

    This was Awesome! I've always known that though one uv light is better than nothing it isn't close to as good as the sun. No one I've ever seen have a 4 Light set up as shown. Realistically most will not.. and for breeders of large collections, it's almost impossible. Would be nice for keepers though to be able to give that kind of set up. Smaller collections with better care, unfortunately, everyone seems to want to breed.

      @@zaba1959 over the years knowledge has changed so when you spend a decade keeping Them it just isn't realistic as nice as it would be. None of us would have any animals if this was the case because no one was keeping them with 4 light set ups lol. I can also say 99% of keepers are not giving their reptiles this because this type of care is new to us. Lol so now I should get rid of 100 animals cause I can't afford to set them up this way? And if I did you think I'd be able to find 100 ppl that would? Your thinking is nice but very flawed. Everyone should do the best they can. Reptiles used to be kept till they died and that was the norm back in the day. Then over time care has gotten better. Captive breeding is important. If it wasn't for captive breeding we would be taking way more from the wild which we still do. I personally spend time with all my animals and give them all sunlight. Also handle them from the time they are born to be able to have very well mannered animals. Do I give them all a 4 light 300$+ set up like shown in this video? No I don't. Would I like to sure! Look at ppl some have way more than what they need and some barely are able to live. There is a whole spectrum. You going to hate on a lady with a baby she can't feed properly? It sucks but that's life. I give the best I can and though that might not be the best I know I do a better job than most keepers and I'm ok with that. When I sell a pet to anyone I always encourage them to give the animals the best they can. I've Changed from someone that thought it is fine to keep your reptiles in tubs. So I am downsizing which takes a long time cause I'm not willing to just ditch my animals that I've kept for longer than my daughter to anyone. Also explain how you would give that type of lighting to the 100+ new babies produced each year? Not possible. We all have to give our best if you can do it great. I always new the UVB bulbs arent close to as good as the sun and this video shows that. Progression takes time and should be encouraged. You can't just go bashing on ppl. Its the biggest problem in this community. If you do it right. Show it and encourage others. Remember that our community was built on people giving improper care cause they didn't know any better and most likely you wouldn't be able to keep anything if it wasn't for them.

      @@SnakeCakeExotics What I said remains a truth. In a video peer review program we run, we say that “Our ethos is to promote the gold standard in herpetological husbandry - with the understanding that not all are able to get there but are willing to have a target to aspire to.” I agree that if you have a big collection, making change can have serious implications, you have to not just add lamps, their fixtures and controllers but also make changes to the cages themselves, provide more space. If you want to keep as many as you do now, then I can tell you that the power demand will go up also. I understand that almost every other week more knowledge is added which throws out of the window existing practices, that will always be a fact of life. I do hope that you are able to develop your husbandry as you intimate, and I guess time will tell how successful you are.
