Final tip: after completing the 30 min fix ( which looks decent in all seriousness), move the hanging picture 12 inches to the left😅.
Pretty sure I would have taken it down before starting the repair.
As someone who does this for a living, he does know what he’s talking about and it’s not a bad method. For any first-timers that don’t have to hurry, start with pre-mixed mud ($5.98 at Lowe’s and it comes with a plastic spatula), get used to doing it, then move to hot mud.
Thanks Nils for helping gamers hiding the gamer rage properly!
Harbor Freight has a four-piece putty knife set for $12 before coupons.
Includes 2 in, 3-in, 4-in, and a 6-in- 1 tool
Thanks for the video! I'll be trying this out in the next few weeks!
The stainless 6” and 4” knives that have a continuous transition to the handle are so good. Never rust, super smooth surface that’s easy to clean. Can’t recommend them enough. But then again, I finished 8 rooms from raw drywall, so having really good knives was worth it.
Oh! You got past the 1million subscribers!! Congrats! And thanks for all the great videos. Cheers!
How do people not understand it's possible to both demonstrate a cheap, quick fix while also recommending better tools?
Anyway, really informative video. Chances are I'll be fixing a whole in the wall at some point because that's just how life works lol
For a diy'er who has not done this job before, I think the pre-mixed joint compound would be a better choice.
If speed is not important, I agree. My goal here was to show that this can be done in a short time, start to finish, so hot mud is required for that timeframe.
Hot mud also shrinks less, especially if patch area is large.
there is nothing wrong with recommending a 20 min mud. especially for job that small. even someone who has never done it before should have a pretty high success rate. and literally the worst case scenario is they cut it out and get it done on their second try.
The nice thing about hot mud is that you just mix what you need and put the rest in a sealed bucket or ziplock. Protect it from moisture and it never goes bad
this will be very useful, thanks!
How dare you do that to a 360 controller, the king of all controllers
Unbelievable 😢😮😢😮
It’s relatable and the reason I have a whole in my wall. Thank NCAACFB25😂
Believe it or not, no controllers were harmed in the making of this video. Those things are built to last.
I know this is a quick and easy demo, but if is wall is perfectly smooth, it's essentially impossible for that not to be hilariously obvious. That said, the one thing that really can be hard to wrap your head around is how easy it is to thin the mud down and run it over the bumps and valleys of the first coat. Unless it''s super chattery, the ridges and such act as rails for the knife to glide over, and it can get super smooth.
Primer?
Is there a reason you didn't use screws to hold the patch in place? Just thinking that if you mount something somewhat heavy there, there isn't much holding the patch to the wall.
No priming?
If the paint isn't standard but a mixture of colors ,you will never make them match.
Now show plaster and lathe repair. I have an old house.
What about the metal self-stick repair squares? They’ve got those for the size you’re working on here. I used that for some damage and it came out perfectly. Better than I expected, actually. With that said, I love your idea of,peeling surrounding plaster off existing drywall, though - that’s brilliant.
Anything is a hammer if you use it hard enough.
i stll see the damage in the wall in the end :/
Yea, textures come in three different varieties. Cheap looking, cheaper looking and really cheap looking. Texture is just to hide poor initial construction and save labor over a good finish. Sorry.
why do the demo with the plastic spatula if you recommend the metal one?
My goal was to show that you can even use the $26 setup to get good results. Paying a bit more means even better results, but it's doable with the plastic knives and pan.
If you score the paper on the wall to take the top layer off about 1 inch around the hole... it would lay flat.
Ok drop the screw guys!!!!! Take those two paint sticks and cut into four inch strips. Then use loctite power grab to glue the four sticks on the ONSIDE of the hole. One at a time , hole for 30seconds each. Let them alone for ten minutes. Then take your patch add more loctite to the exposed stir strips and slowly push the drywall patch into your hole, hold for 30sec. Even better is that 2x4 could have loctite and is even stronger. Now plaster like he said but I use a premixed tub.
I vote for a $5 Goodwill,picture,of a daisy,and a nail. A few thumb wacks, bruises (and maybe a finger cast) and Viola!
So you are Not fan of the plastic knife, but you still using it in the video ? 😅😅😅
I wanted to show that even if you only have $26, you can still do the job. Metal makes it way easier but not everyone is going to spring for the nicer tools.
He was making a point, but somehow you missed it.
When you did the actual job, you didn’t use the metal tools you like
It's true. I was trying to show that this can all be done with the cheap plastic tools too.
you can still see it’s not perfectly flat.
You're right that it's not perfect but I asked several family members to go in and look for the repair job and they couldn't find it for a long time. Eventually they did but weren't even sure if what they were looking at was the right spot, so it blends in really well with the texture of our walls.
If you score the paper on the wall to take the top layer off about 1 inch around the hole... it would lay flat. A missed step from @LRN2DIY But, all the other steps were on point.
Keyword: dumpster.
He didn't say from a construction site.
