I believe Piccolo saved Vegeta here, not his body, but his soul. In the scene before this, Vegeta asks Piccolo if he'll see Goku in the afterlife, and Piccolo tells Vegeta in detail why he's going to hell and won't see Goku again. I am pretty sure in the back of his mind, Piccolo knew Vegeta had a chance of redemption (he is kami after all), but in order to earn it, he had to actually believe he was truely sacrificing himself. I think it's a big development for both of them, neither would have done anything like this earlier in the show.
Later in the manga,King Emma summoned Vegeta from his Hell (as in Toriyama's story, there is no Hell but everyone has one personal Hell) in order to send him to Earth to fight against Buu again. So no,Piccolo literally told him that he could never redeem himself, just die like a Warrior would do. One last selfless action wasn't gonna erase everything he has done until the moment he decided to make Earth his home,Vegeta was supossed to die there and he would had been send to a personal hell like Frieza until he decided to accept his fate and reborn as a new being of another race in another planet of Universe 7,without any of his memories or powers,if it wasn't for the fact that Buu survived and became more powerful, forcing Emma to say screw it and giving Vegeta another chance. That last conversation was just a goodbye between two people that weren't friends but respect each other as Piccolo knew that contrary to his first death on Namek, this time,Vegeta would have accepted been reborn as new person, thus,he wouldn't be able to be resurrected again. Vegeta in fact didn't thought he was better that he thought he was until Goku pointed out that he was also resurrected when the second wish of Porunga was successfully made, which means that Vegeta thought that after Buu got killed,he would dissappear just like what happens to his Fusion Reborn counterpart.
It was like a atonement of his previous sins and crimes but wasn't enough to completey redeem him thus he had to lose his body in the process and go to the waiting station with no will of his own only Goku got to go to train and get his body back. I think Vegeta turned into ash because he did a attack from within himself that burns him physically leaving nothing but ash and it's a fantastic moment for Vegeta because he just gave what he values most his life perfect redemption
It does work in super because he knows how to survive , also intention not to use 100% of his energy but just enough and so because he was just powerful enough to get the knockout but not die.
He cleansed his soul and spirit of the wrong doing that allowed him to have a body. The universe now sees his feats as atonement for the planets he destroyed. Thanks to this act we got our eventual Vegito and now Gogeta.
@@stavrosanenoglou1274 Vegeta was Yemma's trump card. If not for Buu surviving, Vegeta would have had his entire being purged for good. His new body wasn't a reward but just insurance.
I honestly agree. Super is so damn awful. So many retcons, everything is bullshitted for the plot, and the plot sucks ass. Like Beerus in battle of Gods said he was using a significant low percentage of his power (can't remember the exact percentage because it's been over a decade but it doesn't matter as I'll explain) and then Vegeta and Goku got Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan which is 50 times the power of a Super Saiyan God, putting them way above Beerus, but Beerus got retconned and could now one shot them with a flick of his finger, it's constantly, consistently just the worst possible most obvious Toriyama ass pulls over and over and over and over again. Can't stand it. Also, I cannot fucking believe what they did to Tien. Tien never stopped training, KRILLIN LITERALLY RETIRED, and yet the idiot wrote Krillin to be more powerful and Tien to be useless. Remember the Cell saga, Tien's Kikoho is extremely powerful and at this point in the story you'd think the human who never stopped training would've figured out something cool, why not Super Human, or something like that? What if he meditated and trained and got something akin to God-level Ki control or Ultra-Instinct? That would make sense, that would be cool, it would give the humans a purpose in this series, and it's the least that Tien deserves. It's so fucking wrong, it's worse than all the fan fictions I've ever read or watched, it unironically feels like it was written by a mentally disabled person.
The fact that Majin Buu literally tap danced on Vegeta’s ashes is the most disturbing thing I ever seen and when I realized that Akira truly hated Vegeta💀😭
Not surprising because I think it was the push that Vegeta got during the Namek Saga that really hindered Gohan's development and overall popularity. Because fans really started to like Vegeta around that time and notice how far Gohan fell down the card if you will by the beginning of the Android Saga Gohan was nearly Yamchaed.
Not a Vegeta fan and I certainly don't give him a pass for his behavior at any point, but I was always the only one of my friends that noticed that Vegeta purposefully pulled his attack up when he fired the Final Flash at Cell as to not destroy the earth. He probably could have killed Cell if he did, debatable, but either doubted himself or chose not to for a good reason. Was still the cause of Cell getting to perfect form anyway, but I did like that moment of him choosing not to blow up the planet he lived on, lol.
I love how Vegeta usually uses old attacks but with a SSJ upgrade. Final Explosion was used by him in thr Saiyan arc again Goku, Gohan, Krillin and Yajirobe (didn't work due to him being so beaten up), and Final Flash was used in the Namek arc against Recoome (didn't work due to being outclassed by Recoome).
My person theory is that vegeta actually Used up all the ki in every single cell of his body in that controlled explosion meaning he was literally rapidly pulling the life force out of his body and the reason he looks grey is cause all the life force left his body
There are differences between the DBS final explosion. First, he now uses God ki regularly which takes your max fighting potential. As he uses that his body would develop some immunity to that ability. 2nd, Blue Evolution creates more God ki than before. Me being an OG fan of the Dragon Ball franchise as a whole and grew up watching it in the 90s an early 2000s. I just don't consider Dragon Ball super any continuation of the franchise because it's like a completely different timeline that just has mixed old material in it like another TH-camr said in order to make sense of Dragon Ball super you have to forget about everything that ever took place in the Dragon Ball franchise. I mean I considered super cannon and all but it just doesn't fit into the original timeline. But as far as Vegeta's final explosion during the Majin Buu saga which I absolutely hated they just couldn't give Vegeta the win for once but the final explosion to me was a sad attack something like the Tri-Beam that Tien used I mean it was a spectacular attack but it came at a heavy cost. But I also know that Vegeta's greatest character development took place after the final explosion I mean I'll never forget the anger and rage as well as the intense pain that Vegeta had on his face in the afterlife when King Yama summoned him and told Vegeta that Majin Buu was still alive so I can tell even then at the final explosion took a lot out of Vegeta even in the soul sense and I never heard of Vegeta being in so much pain as he was at that point so I think that the final explosion had deep ramifications do Vegeta even later on down the road. And the fact that he had told Goku there is something to a cold Oblivion and that he did it on a lie heck we even see GT Vegeta have visions back to that moment when he used the final explosion and when Goku was about to do the same thing to Omega Shenron it was Vegeta that warned him against it and told him that it wouldn't work so I think the final explosion is one of those techniques that you really wouldn't want to use unless absolutely have to. But yeah Dragon Ball super took every single impact away from the final explosion and what type of consequences follow an attack like that.
I kinda think of it like this now that I've heard your reasoning. In a way, it could be altered for the better by the user if they have a stronger body and Tien kinda prove that's throughout DBZ and DBS. In the fight with Nappa, Tien use the Tri-Beam only once and it kills him. Granted he was already near death before he used it and that could be a factor. Then against SemiPerfect Cell he uses it dozens of times to keep the android pinned down for awhile. Eventually succumbing to his injuries but not dying and hanging on until he gets a senzu. In DBS at the T.o.P. Tien is using it seemingly with little drawback. Throughout the entirety of the series he is constantly training for serious threats, somehow surviving, and in peace-time he continued to train just not as serious. Having a stronger body to control yourself thru these at first self harming techniques. In this way I could see Vegeta's "Final Atonement" evolving thru his training to now become his "Final Explosion". Kinda fits with his character growth as well in my opinion lol. Whatcha think?
12:34 I think what they mean is that Vegeta was able to use the same level power with the final explosion because his body is more resilient/his threshold has increased. So if he were to sacrifice himself again with the final explosion then the power would be even more?
Regarding when Vegeta used it against Toppo, I think it was a “lesser” version of the Final Atonement. Obviously it’s stronger since Vegeta is so much more powerful by the ToP, but I don’t think Vegeta took it to the point of destroying his own body in that case. That’s how he still had energy to fight after, and how he didn’t die. Keep in mind that Vegeta probably didn’t intend to kill Toppo as well.
I think super showed that because they now had God ki In their body. That was a form of protection from the blast. Like you said normally for it to work at full power he had to give everything. But what if he saved just enough God ki to survive. Just a thought because I was wondering the same thing.
@mauricerouse4281 There are two interesting things to note as well: 1 Vegeta was legitimately surprised that he survived it which means he MEANT to use every bit of energy he had and 2 It was made clear throughout the tournament that Vegeta was not aware of how much more power/potential he had and that he was actively exceeding his limitations during this part of the tournament. I say that to say this: You can't tap into a resource you don't know you have. He only survived because he didn't end up using every ounce of his energy even though he intended to.

Man, for me, dragon ball super was such a disappointment, after they introduced the planet sized dragon balls I couldn't stop laughing and pretty much quit watching soon after. In fact, I was craving new dragon ball so bad that I went back and watched GT because i never gave it a chance as a weelad and I actually enjoyed it. SS4 is such a bad ass transformation and puts the color swap transformations from super to shame.
4:27 - 4:37 THANK YOUU
