The Metallica bassist debate has always been an extremely difficult topic but when it came to live performances, Jason Newsted was an unstoppable monster.
@@prometheustv6558 arguably the best bassist ever... he pioneered the overly aggressive and complex lead bass-playing while basically ripping his strings apart with his fingers!
nick davis he got a thick neck from headbanging. Lots of rock/metal musicians who headbang alot have a thick neck. Look at corey taylor. He has the body of a 12 year old but a huge neck
Kirk and Jason were the only ones without huge egoes. These two dudes are very humble and have true class and integrity, traits that are rarely found in the rock scene.
Heck No. I've been playing bass for 26yrs now & fretless bass. I'm also a bass tech for a few professional metal bands that tour the world & Cliff Burton was by far the best bassist Metallica has ever had. Jason had a lot of energy on stage & great backing vocals but when it comes to pure talent Cliff was just an amazing bassist who attacked his bass playing like a lead guitarist which is super hard to do as well as stay in the pocket. #1 Cliff Burton. #2 Robert Trujillo. #3 Jason Newsted. #4 Ron Mcgovney.
Robert is just too unused. Jason was, too. But in my view, Robert is just as kickass as Jason - Jason has the metal atmosphere with himself that Rob kinda lacks. Rob has that funk atmosphere in himself that Jason lacks. In the end, they're both just kickass.
With such charisma in what he does, and the hard legacy he had as a musician, Jason Newsted is, and always will be, my all-time favorite bassist, and my biggest musical influence.
February 12, 1992 and October 3, 1992. I saw Metallica live and watched Jason give every atomic sub particle of himself to those performances. He earned his place as a talented heavy metal icon for all of eternity. 3:32 The tension build though, God. At the end with that didgeridoo background sound effect coming in when he says *"Built with EMG."*
As much as I like Rob, he’s no Jason. Jason was a master and colorful soul on stage. Great backup vocals and the reasonable mind back in the wild late 80’s early to mid 90’s. I wish he would join them again lol
I enjoy listening to Jason being interviewed. He comes across as a very humble, and down to earth guy. He’s truly underrated as a bassist. This man can definitely play!!! For me, some of Jason’s best sounds came from his Spector NS2, -which of course has EMGs. But, I admit that I’m biased, because I play Spectors!!!
As a finger style player i respect pick players and admit that nothing comes even close to that sonic punch they produce in rock and metal music. Jason, Justin, Duff, Dave, Rex...Irreplaceable sound. End of story.
The only EMG you'll hear on the early albums (Kill em all - MoP) is Kirk's lead guitar tracks. Hetfield didn't start using them until some time into the MoP tour, before that he used Gibson Dirty Fingers & Duncan Distortions. ...And Justice For All, is the first album where Het recorded his tracks with EMG loaded guitars.
Nothing against Robert Trujillo, but you might as well call his tenure “the boring years”. The band was well beyond its days of innovating by that point, and had descended into lazy blues rock riffs. James’ vocal melodies disappeared into two note crap. And their life performances are just… meh. I saw them in 1998 and they were incredible. I saw them in 2012 and they were so so boring. I recently watched some videos of Metallica from around the end of the Puppets tour with Jason, and they were FEROCIOUS. I had actually forgotten that they used to be incredible, because they’ve been lame for decades now.
i love how this guy is so dedicated to music, even when he was in metallica, one of the biggest bands that needed perfection on recordings, he still made time for side projects. truly a great man. :)
I met him at the art gallery event in SF, when he touched my shoulders to get a photo, I melted. I want to be just like him on guitar BUT I'm a girl. I love you JASON!!!
I will eventually have EMGs in all of my instruments, Once I had a set of active pickups in my bass the sound was soo godly... LOVE emgs I have being a fan boy but can't help it.. and I thought about getting the SD Steve harris set but the solderless kit GB PU's convinced me to put those in my p Bass....
James just said in another video on here that he was using a distortion pedal and it was around ride the lightning & master pf puppets he went with emg.
What Jason brought to Metallica was not the studio work, which was incredible, but the energy that he had on stage and was able to transmit to the crowd
Well, I'm 16 years old and I have been Metallica and Jase' fan for about 10 years and always considered Jason as the most handsome musician in Metallica's history and now, despite he is 49 years old already, I find him very handsome. He does not look old at all. I just always wanted him to be happy, to have his family, like wife and children... Maybe he is tired of everything. Damn, he had really hard life. Respect, man \m/
ive lost my utube password but i forced my self to find it& to sign in order to say: JASON NEWSTED YOU RULE AND WE RESPECT YOU SO FUCKING MUCH AS AN ARTIST AND AS A PERSON.
I play both ways , And a pick just has a better attack with clarity, And playing with fingers really makes you feel like your attached to the instrument which is cool .
I'm a guitar player, primarily, but every time I pick up the bass, I play it the way Jason would. Nobody comes close to ferocity that this guy has. PERIOD!
good music is good music regardless of this bullshit like "talent", "skillz", "speed", and whatever the fuck else you want to come up with. music isn't a competition it's an art. it has nothing to do with how many fuckin notes you can pack into a given measure of time, but rather the specific notes played, in the specific order that they're played, within the specific timing in which they're played. get over yourselves.
+Mike Brink I heard a better one, *music is not competition it's communication*. That's why guys like Kurt Cobain are legendary rock stars and guys who are 100x more skilled at guitar or singing are obscure. Both are artists but many more people could relate to Kurt's music. Same with rappers and other people that skilled musicians may look down on. I don't care for their music but MILLIONS of people do. I guess maybe the same way some people can look at certain types of visual art and say it's amazing but then another person looks at it and says"I don't get it". Metal is certainly a form of music that alot of people don't get and don't like, but it's loved by millions as well. At the end of the day just gotta make what you really feel like making and let the chips fall where they may.
@guitarshreder91 what matters is that he is happy and Metallica is happy too and that also we all had the pleasure to see/hear them and that they are still alive. Peace bro
It doesn't matter if you play the bass with your fingers or with your pick. Both techniques are different with their weaknesses and strengths that characterize them. Playing the bass with the pick gives it more attack and speed, ideal for rock, punk and metal. playing with the fingers gives more "feeling" and a purer sound technically. both ways are fine. The only important if you play good the bass.
The Metallica bassist debate has always been an extremely difficult topic but when it came to live performances, Jason Newsted was an unstoppable monster.
Charles Ehlers that man was a monster musician.
But Cliff Burton is best
Perkele cliff was great but people hype him up to much. Overrated
cm_xxvi Well of course people would hype him up he’s the best bass player in metal.
@@prometheustv6558 arguably the best bassist ever... he pioneered the overly aggressive and complex lead bass-playing while basically ripping his strings apart with his fingers!
I truly fucking miss Jason being in Metallica... He was such a beast onstage. He brought out the aggressive side of Metallica. That is SORELY missed.
Me too. Jason fits Metallica better than Rob, after Cliff. Plus, Rob really sucks on backing vocals.
My god he's aged so well.
Jonah Fuerstenberg that's what happens if you don't do drugs
David Catanus Yeah and a healthy diet I'm sure. He probably like jogs or something.
Jonah Fuerstenberg he looks thinner than before
Jericho Freman its because of his neck. He used to lift which causes your neck to puff up like a balloon
nick davis he got a thick neck from headbanging. Lots of rock/metal musicians who headbang alot have a thick neck. Look at corey taylor. He has the body of a 12 year old but a huge neck
i love the fury in the bass lines of Jason i really enjoy the work he did in metallica, when he left Metallica they lost a Monster on stage.
Playing with a pick isn't about talent but about the sound. I play both - fingers and pick. It fits to many genres.
Yea like some songs they sound weird played with a pick and some songs sound weird using finger style
Kirk and Jason were the only ones without huge egoes. These two dudes are very humble and have true class and integrity, traits that are rarely found in the rock scene.
I love the way his pick attack blended with Metallica's sound and his backup vocals complimented just as well.
The black sheep of metal
Andrew Sypher sad but true
There is no one like him. Jason is a real modern bassplayer.
I really miss Jason! he was the best bassist with metallica,
Heck No. I've been playing bass for 26yrs now & fretless bass. bullshit
Dude it was a shocking news when he left the band . without doubt the best bass player they ever had period exclamation point
cliff burton was the best
@@embassyhotel fuck you bitch
Jason newsted is #1 Robert is great but he doesn't fit right and I'm a jason fan
+Shawn Huff I agree Shawn
Shawn Huff Robert to me is a better funk player than metal player.
Robert is just too unused. Jason was, too. But in my view, Robert is just as kickass as Jason - Jason has the metal atmosphere with himself that Rob kinda lacks. Rob has that funk atmosphere in himself that Jason lacks. In the end, they're both just kickass.
RG Indian I see you every where
cliff was best
After CLIFF BOURTON JASON NEWSTED is a my second favorite bass player.
Jason inspired me to start playing bass.I love this man.
With such charisma in what he does, and the hard legacy he had as a musician, Jason Newsted is, and always will be, my all-time favorite bassist, and my biggest musical influence.
Jason Is my all time favorite bassist. this guy is a monster at playing the bass. his vocals is great too.

I was like wtf he looks so young and then I realized the video is 7 years old
I love how he talks, he sounds so educated.
legendary bass player just amaizing
Jason is the fucking coolest dude ever.
3:05 hahaha never heard it explained that way, very cool! :)
Of all things I missed about Jason in Tallica, I MISS HIS BACKUP VOCALS!!!!
3:05 possessed by a demon
omg!😂😂😂
slisrapper deja ga gunk chunk chunk chunk
Watching this in 2020. Jason is so young here and his voice is a lot higher. 2020 Jason still looks good for his age though.
As much as I like Rob, he’s no Jason. Jason was a master and colorful soul on stage. Great backup vocals and the reasonable mind back in the wild late 80’s early to mid 90’s.

he's probably one of the best storytelling musicians there is. He could definitely induct people into the Hall of Fame or something.
I love his paintings, it reminds me of Basquiat and a little Pollock too...
As a finger style player i respect pick players and admit that nothing comes even close to that sonic punch they produce in rock and metal music. Jason, Justin, Duff, Dave, Rex...Irreplaceable sound. End of story.
Ull always b my idol...Jason Newsted..looking at ur plays...ive earned 4 wt bass..i play right nw.....A very big thnx 2 u.....🎸bass4eva
i can feel regret in his voice when he talks about Metallica, 15 years is a long time, man....
Jason doesn't deserve deserve all the hate he gets...

Thanks for sharing. The was actually interesting to know.
RickyboyH Hetfield also used Duncan invaders
James also used the Gibson 500T in his white V.
That's where your wrong the first album james recorded with the emg pickups was the garage days ep
Thank you! I was thinking the same thing. Glad you said it
_"In the late 70's I was able to find some import records"_
He looks fricken 30 in this.
Jason! nice bass. I want to try emg's now. U inspired me to play with a pick!
best interview ever.
I like his paintings.
Cliff is the legend we think of that established Metallica. Jason is the force we remember who carried Metallica. Robert is making his own legacy now.

Jason is my favorite metallica member ever
Nice to see this man again!
I fucking love Jason Newsted. I really do❤️
James just said in another video on here that he was using a distortion pedal and it was around ride the lightning & master pf puppets he went with emg.

Luv that bass solo at 1.34 with flanger got to watch
how did i miss this?
I think Jason Newsted could be played by actor Gary Alan Sinise. When a movie about Jason would be made, right?
@Totnik Too true, some of their best days were with Jason holding down awesome bass-lines. I wanna be able to pick as fast as he ca some day!
he is so inspiring
even when he talks about just pickups
Love Jason!
He definitely an amazing musician .
@j669 it's a Sadowsky Modern 5 with a black pickguard and EMGs. The stock Sadowsky Soapbar pickups are sweet, too man...
Newsted is an icon bass player for me among with Lemmy and Steve Harris. Theese men are Bass guitar Gods
i had no idea jason was in voivod
we're are you Jason is April 2017
