- Gav took a shiny & new 2024 Polestar 2 Long Range for a blast across the country, looking at features, efficiency and - most importantly - range.
So, how far can it go per charge? Is that 655 km (407 miles) really accurate? Well, the short version is... Not if you're driving at speed in hilly terrain. However, it was still very, very impressive.
If you got a kick out of this review, learned something new, or just suffered during one of Gav's terrible jokes, why not hit the Subscribe button so you can catch next week's content?

I absolutely love my Polestar 2 MY24 LR RWD - it’s an absolute beast of a road trip car. I’ve already driven the heck out of it around Australia, putting on 10,000kms in just over 2 months of ownership. For me this car is perfection!
Just did a trip from North Sweden to France and Switzerland with my Polestar 2, 2024. What a beautiful car. Love it more then the Tesla 3 I had before this one 😎
That is awesome. I haven't owned a car and am considering purchasing a second hand Polestar 2. The stars are aligning. 😊🎉
What did we learn from this journey? Always pack snacks.
My Polestar 2 LRDM 2023 definitely gives one-pedal drive, and the pack with the full electric seats and ventilated leather makes it a very comfortable car. Had it just over a year and love it. Would never go back to an ICE car.
But seeing these efficiency, range, and charging improvements in the 2024 model is super impressive. Polestar are doing good work.
Based on our MY2022 Polestar there are a few easter eggs to be discovered on polestar2s. The Range Assistant function can be changed from basic (WLTP) to a more accurate 'Projected' based on your driving style.
One pedal driving is sufficient for all but panic stopping and unless emergency level braking is done the blended braking ensures that all the stopping is by way of regen in any case. Another easter egg is the 'Hold' feature. When stopped at traffic lights or the like a firm push of the brake pedal will action a park brake, which instantly deactivates when the throttle is pushed. This is preferable to using the brake lightly as any brake contact will disable the throttle momentarily which isn't great for a clean take off.
Then there's the 'kick' sensor which opens the rear hatch by moving your foot under the car's rear, and the 'curry hook' which folds out of the glovebox lid for putting your take aways on. Also a long push of the unlock button on the fob rolls down all the windows, long push of the lock button raises them all.
And on the subject of takeaways you missed an opportunity in Foxton Gavin. A short detour to Foxton Beach and you could have got some of the finest fish & chips in NZ at Mr. Grumpies.
The MY2024 looks like a step up from our earlier 2022 but no intention of upgrading unless there's V2G functionality on offer like in the Polestar4 apparently. Looking forward to seeing what you were hinting at reviewing in regard to V2G during the previous ID4 review.
You had to stop to use the felicities? LOL! At least it had seated heats!
Great and humorous review, and impressive car. Negatives? Rear space / t-tunnel, and probably cost. But 600km / 370+ miles… can’t fault that! Nice effort Polestar.
Great work Polestar❤
Great review, but one thing! To access the full climate control suite, you can just swipe up from the bottom of the screen, or if you’re the tapping type, just tap on the fan icon.
Also to get rid of the camera view, tap on the big camera icon. Now that was hidden because you’d just changed the volume, so you were stuck, you had to wai 5 seconds for the volume display to go away (note tapping on that lets you change all the different volumes like navigation). Or you could have just driven really fast.
I mean the point he and almost all car reviewers are making is that buttons are just more practical. They are always buttons, they are always in the same place, do the same thing and work reliably all the time. The worst thing EV cars added to the world (thanks Tesla) is removing buttons and putting stuff on the tablet.
Hey bro, what a well presented video.
Much appreciated.
(i'll stick to my Escooter) ;)
from Australia
$90k is a lot of eScooter
We have the Standard Range with plus & pilot, honestly unless you're towing, you really don't need the long range version at all.
Especially on the highway, it's the king of cruising. Spent 5 hours driving at xmas on a single charge, approx 430kms & still had 17% spare at the end of it.
My Model Y would have needed a bit of a top up to do that same travel.
For sure that’s so true
What a great watch. Your reviews are always very entertaining. Makes me not only want to get a Polestar 2 but to New Zealand too! But I know I’m gonna be stuck in the UK with a Zafira for a while 😢😂
Phenomenal efficiency just a pity about the transmission tunnel through the back. Keep the great videos coming Gavin.
Transmission tunnel that don’t matter at all. Had the car full 5 people with me but the one in the middle was my friends son so it was all good haha
Nice review, and impressive car. You would have spent less time charging if you’d used Bulls 300 kW charger and used the most of the 205 kW charging rate
Love how the newer cars got such good range. I wonder if you could've got to wellington on no charge if you went a max of 90 kph the whole way.
A week ago - I had done the reverse trip in a standard Tesla Model Y with only one 30 min charge in Taupo. But that required me to do 90kph for most of the Wellington to Taupo portion of the trip.
$94k 😳 ...
It's insane, not even close enough to be worth that kind of money.
How much is a similar spec Tesla in New Zealand or Australia?
agree @@ateiviz
That prop up in the boot might come in handy if you are stowing an esky in the well
Ordered this exact configuration (Pilot but no Plus pack) in the fall/winter campaign, and will get it next week. 452000 NOK (even same color, including winter tires) is about 71000 NZD, which is a fair/good price.
I actually prefer not to have the glass roof (worse insulation, may crack, and has higher weight), and the weave-tech seats in the Plus pack is sweaty and looks a bit boring. The heat pump is nice, but the efficiency and range in this '24 model is more than enough, even if you loose up to 10% range on winter days compared to the one ones with heat pump. And I won't have to worry about another component that may break or need service.
Great choice of yours. P2 Is an amazing cool car. Best on the road
The best is to not have glass roof for sure.
Whenever I watch EV road trips in Stralia I never like the roadside greenery, which is rarely green but watching your trips with the rich green Kiwi roadside and I also note nicer buildings....so much nicer.
POLESTAR 3 and POLESTAR 4 are based on a true EV platform so they have a flat floor. POLESTAR 1 was a Hybrid, POLESTAR 2 is a pure EV using a petrol car architecture. The new models are true true EVs.
Will be a great improvement (also much more expensive, especially the 3)
Nice review! Will you do a long range test of the BYD Seal premium/performance which has roughly the same size battery? What are the pros and cons for each?
Go with a Polestar to make sure your car have good second hand value ❤️😁
Nice video ! Great test ! Amazing the amount of kilometers you did on one charge ! The navigation can be shown on the screen in front of you. That could solve your issue when 360 camera was on. I will order mine this week but will take the plus and pilot pack. Plus pack had a lot of interesting options.
Great review, love the humour and banter. 👊 👏
Thought this was much bigger than it is, the boot is not much bigger than my Kona z might be a tad more room for rear passengers though
I didn't realise it had a tunnel though that's unforgivable.
I noticed that in the UK, you don't get that much as standard and that the BYD seal ends up with much more equipment for much less money
It’s a sports sedan not really a family car - it’s meant to be driven not lounge in. The quality and user interface is excellent.
@@Stan-at-KangarooIslandTV I don’t think you can call anything based on a Volvo S40 a sports sedan. It’s also not a sedan it’s an SAV.
@@Stan-at-KangarooIslandTVagree with other comments get it’s a suv platform and at 2.1 tonnes way too heavy to be a sports sedan
It’s based on the Volvo XC40 so that’s why it has a transmission tunnel
Weight for the replacement Polestar 2 in a year or so with a proper dedicated ev platform. Assuming of course polestar hasn’t gone bust by then
I think the cars own route planner is better than ABRP, the cars planner knows the battery status, ABRP can only guess.
I have a MY23 Polestar 2, and the rear window height actually blocks SUV headlights from beaming in the back at the lights. I'm not sure if this was a deliberate design, but it's a nice feature. Plus the mirrors autodim. I average 14.7kWh/100km on the long-term trip meter (probably 90% suburban), and about 13.8 on the highway.
That’s very true. I haven’t thought of that one but that’s can be part of the design maybe. A great car and design. Love the polestar. Everytime I see them on the road I get happy ✔️😁
Gavin, you only listed a 2 year warranty for the Polestar. It's 5 years in OZ... it that an error?
The polestar is a better car and safety for the future. Volvo x Polestar. Best for the future.
"You want to be touching cloth"
most definitely 😁
Huh? It’s easy to clean - no complaints from me…
might want to look up what touching cloth means.. or perhaps not 😁 NSFW
@@definedphotography 😂 I’m too naive and plain laced obviously
I like the improvements but unlike Gav I hated the rear passenger seat. It was cramped for leg space and the door openings were quite small, making it a little impractical. Getting kids in and out of car seats = bad back. I did test drive the original model but I'm assuming the interior space hasn't changed. It still looks like the identical body dimensions.
Polestar 3 or 4 is for you. My order is done already
Did you leave Creep On? I had a Polestar 2 for 3 year and touched the break peddle probably only 20 times .... If you have One Peddle Driving on Standard and Creep OFF, it will generally be more than strong enough to stop you nicely. Unless you are lifting way too late .... which the Kiwi's seem to love doing for some reason ... like life is too short to slow down 1/10th of a second earlier.
Gav next time you have a van to review you need to take it to the south island and pay a visit to Scot Brown of Scot Brown Carpentry
You can wrap the plastic in the middle of the car. 😁
Just got a LRDM MY2024 last week. Love it so far! This car does not have a bad angle IMO. I definitely like the infotainment system from Google. Coming from a Tesla Model 3 I actually like this better already!
For what you pay its an average car
Adaptive cruise control not standard?
Great review, let’s hope you weren’t actually touching cloth !! 🏴
Did I see 2 years for a vehicle warranty? That’s a bit low in today’s market. I admit I test drove the front wheel drive long range version 2 years ago and it was approx $82K so a bit of a price hike. It looks like the centre console still impinges on drivers knee room. One thing Polestar did right was making the P2 a liftback. Much better than the boots on its competition.
That was a pretty efficient consumption rate for open road driving. Not such a fan of NMC batteries, much prefer LFP because longevity and safety outweighs charging speed. I see the BYD Seal Premium and Tesla M3LR as better value for money at approx $20K less.
It's such a beautiful car and it would be top of my list if I could afford this bracket of cars. Is the vehicle warranty really only 2 years? That's pretty insane.
My friend have 4 year old polestar and never had a problem. Polestar can set up longer warranties for sure if you talk to them. Polestar 2 is my favorite and I got a 2024. Best on the road.
what color is your polestar? is it thunder?
Quite a few remarks on the review: Stop for a coffee and don’t charge the car while you are stopping?
Range: all very good, but I live in Europe and cruising speed for roadtrips is usually 120 or 130. Range ain’t that great in that case. Besides, the trips tend to be around 1000km, so in the winter that means 3 stops minimum.
That being said: I am considering a Polestar 2 dual motor or a BMW i4. Downside: I am used to the Volvo V60 and XC60 and the polestar has a lower interior quality. Polestar 4 would be a solution, but that isn’t being sold yet.
I’ve got the BYD seal premium (long range) and I get 600km per charge. If I drive it like I stole it it’s closer to 550km. Same range for way less $
But byd isnt a polestar so nothing to compare with. Polestar is a safe brand for the future. Byd isnt anything special like the polestar.
You do realise both cars are made in China yeah? The polestar is nice, however it’s not $30k nicer as the price suggests. Having driven both and owning the Seal, there are pros and cons to both cars, but I can assure you the polestar isn’t worth $30k more. Drive both and then come back to me. Don’t knock it until you tried it. I drove the new Tesla model 3 highland shortly after I bought the BYD as we are changing both cars, the BYD is nicer than the model 3, and better value for money, again…..
Very impressive range on this thing! And very good towing capability. But an expensive car without vehicle to load, and a transmission tunnel...disappointing for a car at this price point.
With a 200kW charger you would have only har to charge for 10 minutes and still had more margin than you got when you arrived. (But then you would not had the time to eat... 😂😂😂).
I wonder how big of a difference it would be to keep the speed at 110-120km/h.
Looks like a nice car but that warranty is poor. The MGs get 7 years at a fraction of the price. Makes it a car you really need to be wealthy to risk owning or you lease it I guess.
This is a great upgrade over the first car
It’s not the same as combustion car because you still needed to wait for a full charge as where the engine would’ve had a full tank
Polestar 2 refresh should appeal to buyers who don't like the Model 3 refresh because of the lack of stalks and the added advantage of more practicality of the Polestar 2 being a hatchback. The new RWD Polestar 2 single motor’s has 320-mile EPA range and faster charging speed. Other upgrades include an increase of 69 horsepower (299 total) and 118 extra lb-ft of torque (361 lb-ft in all). Additionally, the 440V platform can charge as high as 220 kW, charging 10-80% in 25-28 mins - a 20% speed increase, according to Polestar. Bjørn Nyland youtube video titled “Polestar 2 LR SM refresh charging test” shows the refresh 2024 Polestar 2 has much better charging speed - better than Tesla and iD4.
Polestar 2 will get the $7500 USA EV Tax credit if you lease the vehicle. The new Polestar 3 will be built in the USA at one of the Volvo factories so will qualify for the EV tax credits.
A bit odd, all the excitement about the car ending with a relatively low overall score. Nice review, though. Still you committed 1 of the 2 "mortal sins" reviewers do when addressing this car: It is frustrating to see people complaining about the lack of physical buttons for the climate control when it can be fully controlled by voice. At least you didn't complain about the cup holder. ;)
Does he have multiple Livers? Think he means Kidneys.. but with this guys sense of humour you never know =P
I understand not wanting to stop in Levin =P
"Touching cloth" pmsl 😅😅
19:59 The Twitter famous air conditioner makes an appearance!
Why no V2L?!
I bought a polestar 2. 3 weeks later it lost 5000€...
I'd say it's the car of the 90s farmer. It's solid, but otherwise it's not that great.
The pluses :
- quiet up to 90 km/h
- it has controls
- the interface is practical and fluid
- torquey engine
- it's not a tesla
Minuses
- it's not super comfortable, and not super incisive
- much less efficient than the tesla
- little storage space
- rear seats for children
- no car parking (crazy eh)
- opening the boot with your foot works one time out of 2
- the 3D camera is useless
- the adaptive cruise control makes you puke
- the polestar app is ultra slow
Clearly, my next car won't be a Polestar.
$94k just seems too high for this good, but not great vehicle.
The lack of one pedal driving is a deal breaker. Shame it's such a nice car. It should be simple to have one pedal driving as an option.
Oh yeah the tunnel is dumb too. Kia or Hyundai for my next EV then. Just Gavin didn't mention one pedal driving for ionic and EV6 in those episodes.
Huh? It has full one pedal driving - mine is on the all time, it slows you down and comes to a complete stop, and I don’t even really use the brakes.
@@theunknownunknowns5168huh - again. The way this thing drives you need the cockpit to brace yourself - for me it’s perfect…
@@Stan-at-KangarooIslandTV Wait. Does it have one pedal driving or not? Gavin is saying not. I'm confused.
@Stan-at-KangarooIslandTV I guess you have not tried a Tesla, or a 2018 or newer Nissan Leaf, both of which once set stay on one pedal driving and are very strong. The EV6 which is not quite as strong and resets every time you hit reverse or turn off the car, but still far stronger than all that just regen EV.
"Eating a clock" 🤣 but a big loss with having a mechanical drive for the RWD, taking up space. why are hub motors not more of a thing?
They increase the unsprung mass of the wheel and throw off the ability of the wheel to track over uneven roads
Will Polestar last as the parent company and Volvo is moving away from them as their cars are to expensive and do not sell - also poor interior and no separate aircon controls, so much for Safety first.
Just wish EVs could still have a spare wheel, especially these longer range ones.
I love it, I need it, I will buy it. ❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉
13:37 481 km in 9 hours…. That’s an average speed of 53 km/h. Who’s driving this speed and tells it is highway driving ?
18:15 627 km in 8h43 mins. This means an average speed of 72 km/h. Is this highway speed ?
Holiday traffic in New Zealand means you can't get anywhere near 100 km/h. Lots of road works, lots of traffic, lots of delays. Welcome to State Highway 1!
You could buy 2 CCP BYD Seals with this
and 🐉 drive
Tesla Model 3 2024 would be a better purchase
probably the least efficient car I ever drove, but it was fun. 100->70% in 30 minutes driving at motorway adult speeds
You then probably tested older version. They were less efficient.
That said to really get 100->70% in 30min (which is about 45kwh/100km) you have to drive like 180kmh+ or start will -30C battery or something not fully normal...
The weight is about 2,000 kgs.
A better test would to stay within the manufacturers battery use guidelines of max charge 80% and min charge 20%..
Plus minimal use of fast chargers.
It's not really helping the electric revolution at a price most can't afford. A car needs to travel a similar range and be sold at an affordable price if electric utopia is ever going to be realised. Maybe lotto will be kind this weekend!
79kwh useable battery, just like most EV they advertise max capacity not useable
I'm not sure that is a accurate statement... Actually thinking about it I am sure. You are just plain wrong. As per Bjørn Nyland most manufacturers give zero percentage battery indicating with a buffer. A ice vehicle manufacture would ever every lie about efficiency eh?! Cough cough diesel gate cough. Get lost you authoritarian petrostate regime apologist. It's like giving puntiny a bj and paying for it.
I think it's irrelevant what usable capacity is when it is offering real world range like that
Hey Gavin, do you know what "touching cloth" means? Bad choice of description. You definitely don't want to be "touching cloth".
Why does Australia not have these Chargers oh yea we had 10 years of liberal party
Looks like a competent EV, but it’s $20k too expensive. It also amuses me that some Polestar drivers think they are distinguished in their fancy new Volvo, not realising they are driving a Geely-Zhenjiang.
It's designed in Gothenburg Sweden though and was originally designed to be a new Volvo before Polestar became a separate brand. Even though it is built in China and has Chinese owners, I'm not sure why you're trying to disparage Geely? This car seems like it's really well built, unlike certain American EV'S.
Polestar is a Swedish brand. Polestar 3 and 4 will be made in US and Korea respectively. I am not sure why you deliberately target the Chinese.
Nice review! Very engaging. Do you deliberately get general commentary, "things" wrong just to see who's paying attention? One of your livers? Perhaps one of your kidneys. You do look a bit alien, so perhaps you have two, or more livers :) Felicity is a female given name , facilities a place, amenity, or piece of equipment provided for a particular purpose. Deliberate or not, it makes me smile :) Cheers
Over priced get a Seal
Far too expensive. Waste off time.
Waste of money
