I have been living in fear for months now hearing different stories about elevated PSA level . After watching this video I feel relief of all anxiety and stress about my PSA number . God bless you doctor and than you for clarifying this misunderstanding and complexities of PSA level .
My advice...do not buy into this "false reading" nonsense...track your PSA over a few years...if it goes up, you likely do have cancer!...I know about this...I had radiation for prostate cancer six years ago, after watching the PSA readings move up, over a ten year period...towards the end of my "watch and wait " period, it leaped up past 4.0, and then, just before radiation, was 6.6..By then my Gleason score was 7...time to stop the spread of cancer, and the radiation worked! If I had waited another year, the cancer would have spread beyond the Prostate...and then it would have been a much bigger problem.
I had my blood work done in Feb. the PSA was 4.16, my doctor said see a urologist. I did, he said come back in 30 days and do another blood work. During that time I watched TH-cam doctors explaining what to eat to shrink the prostate. So, I did. When I returned 30 days later my PSA was 4.15. I was happy it went down one, the urologist said, it's only 1 point. I told him I was eating the right food to shrink a prostate, he said I was wasting my time. So on the 30 day return visit, he was telling me I needed to have an MRI. I am claustrophobic and was nervous about that. He said it doesn't have to be right away, I said, well how about in a year. Whoa, he screamed NO, you come back in 3 and we will do another blood test. So, for the next 3 months I really went into the diet of correct foods, I also bought some stinging nettle supplements. I went last week for my visit, and my PSA went from 4.15 to 4.95. The urology assistant told me this was alarming, and now I need to have the MRI. My friends told me that they read on the computer, if your level increases 7 points within a year, you are most likely dealing with cancer, mine increased 8 points in 3 months, so of course now I believe I have cancer. I have made the determination that regardless of what type of cancer it might be, I will have my prostate removed. But after watching this video, I am not 100% doom and gloom anymore. In this video he mentions that extreme weight gain or loss can spike the numbers. In the 3 month time period I lost 23 pounds; 4 pounds a month would be considered average, I have lost almost double that. So, my MRI is scheduled for Oct. 12, and now my hopes are up a bit. Thank you for posting this video,
Thank you so much for sharing that Tim! Definitely get that MRI, but it may be that nothing bad is going on! It's good that you made the decision to have it tested despite you being not comfortable with the procedure. What was the diet you did to reduce PSA? Was it plant-based, low-fat, low-dairy?
@@HealthierThroughProstateCancer For the last 10+ years I have been eating healthy food, nothing processed, I cook my own meals with quality products, and my meals were always balanced with meat, veggies and carbs. But I watched Dr. Berg's videos on insulin resistance, so I started eating more veggies, less carbs. I do not do fasting, but I did stop all snacking between meals. When I was concentrating on my prostate, I stopped all pasta and replaced the pasta with asparagus. I started to add a lot of tomatoes to my salads as well as red peppers. Once in a while I would get a bag of celery. In the mornings I added raspberries and black berries as well as my blueberries. I also got a 3 month supply of Stinging Root Nettle. I have lost weight, but sadly a lot of that is my muscle. I need to build it back, but at the age of 66, I am finding it difficult to do.
@@HealthierThroughProstateCancer Thank you, this has been a problem for me for the past couple of years. I keep having injuries with just simple muscle exertion. I even ruptured my bicep. I am lifting some simple weights and doing some stretches to keep in shape, I certainly would appreciate seeing some videos to help seniors gain muscles!
I have a question that I am a bit embarrassed to ask. The urologist told me to not have sex or masturbate a day before my blood work, it would increase my PSA. So now that my numbers have increased, I am really nervous about masturbating. Is it safe to masturbate? Will I do more harm if I do? I appreciate your answers, thank you
This prostate issue is really mind boggling to me. I've gone the whole route and they can't find any prostate cancer. I'm 76 now and have been toiling with PSA testing since 2017. I have BPH and my PSA level, depending on the phase of the moon or time of day (LOL) has been in-cased from 7 to 10 range all those years. You can purchase a self test for about 70 bucks in the states from Cash Clinical. That's how I have a PSA score card from all those years.
A once a year 3t MRI is all you need. If they don't see anything then no biopsy should be needed . Blind Biopsy misses almost 40 percent. 40 percent of high PIRADS on a MRI are due to inflammation not cancer. So radiologist can't determine that. Biopsy is always needed.
Suggestion: Avoid any sexual activity for at least 48 hours before having a PSA test. Last fall my tests were in the 4.2 to 4.5 range then about a month ago it spiked at 6.24 which raised alarms with my urologist. Two weeks later and after avoiding any activity down there for 96 hours the re-test came back at 3.8
@@schmingusss you should ask your doctor what the next step is. Worrying won't help you the key is to act as soon as possible. if you don't have a urinary tract infection..and you make sure you have had had no sex or wank for 3-4 days before your psa test.. And its increasing like that..probably Biopsy as fast as possible make sure you are knocked out not awake.. 1 in 7 to 8 men get Prostate Cancer and 1 in 4 if you are a black guy. Key to it is getting to it..don't delay. I had it removed ..I was knocked out and awake never knowing what happened. Most discomfort was having that Catheter. Now its control the pee time
At maybe 55 yrs of age or slightly older, my PSA started to increase more than it had, say the previous 10 yrs. I was to 7, then 9 then 12. I saw multiple urologists, and read up as much as possible on the situation. If I read the part about ingesting any testosterone supplements, it didn't stick in my mind, nor did multiple urologists EVER ask the question of whether I was taking any testosterone boosting supplements. As we age, as noted here, one's PSA level rises naturally. In addition to this, a man's testosterone level declines as he ages. Being totally unaware of the connection to increased PSA levels and ingesting testosterone supplements, I probably ingested them off and on from the age of 50, up until 60, when after an alarming increase rate, (7 to 12 in two years) I pursued frequent testing and had four biopsies performed (at MY urging, not the urologist(s). I think I had to wait a minimum of three months between biopsies, for healing and insurance purposes. Anyway the first two biopsies were negative, while the third produced a plug that indicated pre-cancer. The fourth one came up positive, at the site of the previously pre-cancerous plug. The pathology (low level/slow growing) was encouraging, which made me an ideal candidate for 'watchful waiting'. (my Gleason score reflected this finding) Despite the optimistic prognosis from my biopsy, I still read up on the subject, and visited even more urologists- one at UCLA. All told me the same thing that my urologist had said, and that was 'watchful waiting'. Still, knowing that I had verifiable cancer in my prostate, and it wasn't high grade nor fast growing, and thus not abnormally enlarged, I wasn't sold on the eerie 'watchful waiting' advice. Because of this, I gathered first person accounts of a few co-workers, who had successful prostatectomy's performed, with close to the same pathology as mine. (Gleason score) They were three, four and five years out respectively from their procedures, and all had tested zero on their PSA blood tests. My latest PSA had me leveling off at 11, after a high of 12. Again, I'm ingesting testosterone supplements on a fairly regular basis, and again, not one urologist I saw, and I saw maybe five or six, EVER mentioned NOT ingesting testosterone supplements, or even speculated on what might be the reason (fat ingestion etc.) for my high PSA readings. Finally, I decide to have a prostatectomy performed (Sept. '15) It was successful.(no complications etc.) I tested every six months to check my PSA for five and a half years, (zero) before testing in March '22, with a 1.6. Whaaat? Zero to this? Why? First, I was quite irritated with my Medicare Advantage primary care physician, whose care I had been under for over a year. I gave him my medical history, which of course included everything involving my prostate. He knew and I reminded him, that per my urologist, I needed to get my PSA checked every six months, and NOT once a year, as my insurance would only cover. So the first six month interval comes, and I make sure before I get my blood drawn, that the office has gotten approval from the insurance to ensure that they'll cover the PSA test- they did. (zero) Then as is the case every six months per my insurance, I have labs done (everything except PSA of course). I fell asleep at the wheel I guess you could say, as unlike the first six month interval, where I was all over making sure that my PSA would be done and covered by insurance, I assumed that it's in my chart, and my primary KNOWS (or should know) that my PSA needs to be included in my six month blood tests. So I'm at the doctors office, to review the results of my six month labs, and he's going through everything, and there's no mention of my PSA result. So I mention it to him, and he says that it's only done once a year. I then remind him of my urologists orders that I have it once every six months. He goes on the apologize and then makes light of the situation, saying since I'm in there now, a whole month after I had my blood drawn, that I only have FIVE months to go, to get it done with my regular six month labs, and BESIDES, you' been ROCK solid in producing zeros for five and a half years, now, what's another five months? I said for starters, it'll make it a whole year between PSA tests when I next get it done. At that point I needed to completely get out of my comfort zone and demand that I schedule a PSA test- but I DIDN'T. Well, you know what's coming obviously, I wait till the next scheduled six month interval for blood, and of course it reads 1.6. Zero for five and a half years, wait one year instead of six months, and the read is this. He gave me a referral to my urologist, who just said to go to the adjoining prostate cancer center, and get an appointment. No mention of anything as to my ingestion habits. (testosterone) Two weeks later, I see the radiologist and again, he never inquires as to my ingestion history of testosterone supplements, he goes over my prostate history of course, and gives me this sample bottle (30 ea) of testosterone suppression pills- says they're worth $5k. First time EVER, anybody treating me for my prostate situation, mentions anything about testosterone. And obviously it's not good for a post-prostatectomy PSA presence, as evidenced by these pills. So back to research, and eventually I find evidence, albeit not out front and center like it should be. Your video at the 8:42 mark, does point this connection out between non-physician testosterone supplementation, and prostate related cancer. As I said before, this fact should be posted in EVERY urologists exam room, along with literature, informing of the clear connection between testosterone supplementation and prostate cancer. Suppressing such vital information is deadly.
Hi, thank you so much for sharing your story here and making others aware. Even though prostate cancer is unfortunately so widespread in men (almost 1 in 6 will get it), there is still so much lack of awareness, not only by the people, but from physicians too. I will make some more videos about these topics, and point people to online sources for their own reading, so as to help others make the best decisions when it comes to their health and management of their prostate. Thank you once again for this, comments like yours help raise awareness, and also give me ideas on future videos.
Jeez all those biopsys and no MRI?. And why not continue with surveillance? At least with a MRI they could target lesions. TRUS is a 40 percent miss rate. Perineal with a MRI is now the gold standard for biopsy. And high PIRADS have a 30 to 40 percent of being non cancer.
@@mrofnocnon First, thanks for your considerate reply. In response to you inquiring about my post post prostatectomy health- there were no complications, and my PSA was less than zero or whatever the less than arrow and a zero mean. Over six years with those readings. Miss a six month test, so a years gone by, boom! 1.6 (from six years of zero's) The fact that they prescribed testosterone suppressors, obviously means testosterone isn't good for middle age men, so it only makes sense that pre-prostatectomy, when my PSA kept rising steadily, and more than doubling once, (in middle age) that a doctor, especially a urologist, would ask the very relevant question- "by the way, are you taking any testosterone boosting supplements"? That's what grates on me.
I was a semi truck driver for nearly twenty years. I retired two years ago, I lost 25 pounds, and my PSA went from a high of 6.9 to 4.1 currently. All that sitting driving a semi truck, and putting on weight I believe caused the high reading, i.e 6.9.
My dad and most of the men in my family are truckers. My dad (deceased) and uncle have had prostate cancer. There’s growing research that truckers and railroad workers (conductors/engineers) are at increased risk for PrCa because of whole body vibration. It’s great to hear that you took the steps necessary to reduce your PSA. I wish more men took there health seriously particularly as it relates to PrCa.
The trouble I’ve had with doctors is they never ask about what I do that might raise the psa levels. I’m a distance runner and I have found that interval training will raise the psa. The doctors I have used know very little about the connection of exercise on psa levels. Got to go! Get my 1 1/2 hour run in!
My PSA spiked because the prostate grew, over time, to the point where it was blocking the urethra. Apparently this agitated the prostate to create more PSA. This went on for about five years until I had laser surgery. It was a probe put up the urethra to blast the overgrown prostate blocking the urethra. Aside from the other main benefits, my PSA immediately dropped to under 2, and has stayed there for the last seven years!
@@RC-br1ps - I don’t remember the name, but you can do an internet search on it (it’s fairly common). The doctor inserts the laser (with a camera) up the urethra to the prostate and removes whatever is blocking. You’re completely sedated and have no recollection of what happened. Mine was done at outpatient surgery in a hospital. Checked in at the front desk at 6am, was out by 12:30pm. You’ll want somebody else to drive you home.
Half year ago my dad had PSA 450, yes 450 not 45, he is 70s old, found prostate cancer 4a step. we went many doctors, took many medications and treatment, now PSA is 40, Alhamdulillah, its still very high, but don't lose hope everyone who reads this , everything is possible by God's will, make dua and never lose hope , keep trying. Hello! How did you found out that you had cancer? There was a rising in your psa levels between tests? although they continue to be under the 4ng/ml rate? Thanks.
Sexual activity raises your PSA. ALWAYS go at least 3 complete days with NO sexual activity at all before having blood draw for a PSA. It can lower your PSA by 2+ points.
@@mdv5845 hadn't even thought of that but it stands to reason. Another thing is, once you start abstention for your PSA test, you create your new baseline. MAKE CERTAIN that you ALWAYS ABSTAIN for EVERTY follow on PSA test or you will end up in the prostate biopsy line...and you don't want to be in that line.

@@mdv5845 Prostate biopsy is like a mid-evil torture that can easily miss cancer. It seems it is a bread and butter, go to process for urologists, but the other options are very limited. When you come in with a certain set of symptoms, they DEFAULT to a biopsy because the options are limited and they need to cover their rears also. That said, they can't force you to have it, ask about alternatives. You can't just "let it go". Particularly if the urologist says they feel a lump on digital exam. Good luck. It's no fun.
I’m 55 and have been getting a PSA score since I was 40. It’s always fluctuated between 0.9 to 1.3. Over the past three years it’s gone from 0.9 to 1.1 to 1.2 to 1.8 this past week. I’ve always had my blood work done on a Friday. This time I had it drawn early Monday morning. I had biked three hours each on Sat & Sun and was sexually active Sat. My GP wasn’t alarmed by my number. I AM THE ONE who asked for a retest, which he wants to do in three months. After reading the stories here and listening to the doctor, I’m fully convinced my 1.8 was a blip due to heavy exercise and ejaculation
I'm 62 and have never heard of the PSA test and my doctor has never mentioned it and now I am with my 88 year old father passing from prostate cancer related issues.
Saw a post I saved and got too busy to look back at showing the connection between sudden high blood pressure ( blood pressure at the doctors vs at home) and exercise (running included). I remember swelling from running last about a day for every mile run.
! am 69 years old with a PSA of 25. I had a 8 needle biopsy when it was 7 and no cancer. two years later had a 10 needle when I was at 12psa and no cancer. Two years later 12 needle with psa of 15, no cancer. Two years later had a MRI with contrast with one suspicious area. Had a guided 12 needle Biopsy when psa was 21 and no cancer was found. Also had a genetic urine test and had a very low score to say also I had no cancer. Now 2 years later Im at 25 psa and I just don't know what to do. The needle Biopsy's are no fun and I have tried everything not to be reckless. The worrying has worn me out.
Are you symptom free? No symptoms at all is NOT a good sign. If you have other symptoms it could be prostitis or enlarged prostate that is giving you the High PSA. I have a 9.6 PSA and have had 2 prior biopsies without any Cancer as well. I also had 2 MRI's with 2 rad 4 lesions that were targeted and still no cancer. I am only 55 though.
Hi Will, thanks for the comment. Your case is quite interesting. I'll agree with Brad that you might have prostatitis or BPH. That's too many biopsies personally. Try to make changes to your diet and exercise and see if you can lower your PSA that way, but do key a close eye to it. Good luck and keep us updated please!
Thank you for sharing friend. I have gone through much of the same. Ive had two of the "12 needle" biopsies done...and Ive decided NO MORE!! Im taking several different herbs, & supplements, which are PROVEN to prevent cancer cells from reproducing...besides my faith in Jesus' blood...
As a 71 year old guy I have to wonder what is the true value of the PSA test? One of the things that first caught my eye was that I applied for life insurance and the insurance co ordered a blood test but amazingly they did not order a psa test. I found this quite strange. Didn’t they want to know if I was predisposed to prostate cancer? In 2011 my psa was 4 but I did not get the recommended prostrate biopsy because I didn’t want to mess with my prostate gland since I was having no problems of any kind. For the next 10 years my psa continued to increase reaching 28 in 2022. I still decided not to get a biopsy every time it increased because I was still having no problems that was affecting my daily life. In 2023 it started to trend down for the first time to 26. I still have no discernible problems that’s affecting my quality of life at my current age of 71. I recognize that I could still get prostate cancer or may already have it in which case I’ll have to deal with the decision I chose to make. In the mean time I’m just happy that all seems ok.
Hi, thank you for your comment. A PSA of 28 is too high and there's likely something going on there. I'm not saying it's necessarily cancer. If you have life insurance maybe now it's a great time to seek the opinion of a urologist who specializes in prostate cancer and at least get an MRI. It's always better to at least know.

I am 75. Just saw my doc and PSA was 2.8. For several years my PSA was 1-2. I recall reading an article by the doc that discovered it. Said it was very unreliable. Also years ago another doc said all men will eventually have cancer in prostate. Something else will kill you.
Prostate Cancer Research Institute is a new on line group. I’ll let you know what they do. I also have another question. I usually get my blood test when I go to the doctor. At that time my blood pressure goes from 105/65 to 180/140. Have you ever heard of blood pressure affecting psa? Doctors always told me I had high blood pressure and I believed them until a doctor at a 10k race took blood pressures before and after the race. Mine was a lot lower afterwards. He said it might be trap syndrome. Interesting! After that race I bought a blood pressure tester for home use. I learned a lot from that experience.
Hi Joe, I wouldn't say you should be worried about your blood pressure affecting your PSA, as it sounds like something consistent that happens every time you go to your physician. Remember, with PSA it's not as much the value itself, but the change over time. Try to keep things consistent before each measurement to track the change over time.
Hi! I run too. Everytime I go to the doctor after running, my blood pressure is much lower than if I get it checked several hours later. I didn't t get my PSA checked last year because of COVID. Last month I had a PSA test and my PSA level went from a 1.2 to a 15! I am scheduled to go to a urologist next week for a consultation. I exercise everyday, watch my diet, maintain an average weight of 165 lbs./5' 10", on no medications and am a very happy and healthy 69 year old. Most men in my family live to be 95 to 101 years. I don't know of any of them having prostate cancer or problems with their prostate. Both of my grandmother's and my mother succumbed to cancer (cervical, breast and bone) but I'm not sure if there is a correlation between a family history of cancer and a high PSA level especially with these kinds of cancer. Anyway, I guess I'll find out more after my appointment on Tuesday. Tony
@@tonylamb863 Tony! After having about 30 years of scary information from doctors I am working to do most of my own research. I have had weird results from doctors since I was about 20 years old. Like going to a doctor. Psa. When I started doing a lot of interval training my psa went up. My doctor told me that only riding a bicycle can raise your psa. BS. There are a lot of things that can raise your psa. Look on TH-cam for information. My favorite doctor visit was when he told me that I should get all my life in order because I was not going to live much longer. I ran the the Boston Marathon about 4 months later. That was in 1991. Studies now show the urine test is better than the blood test. I personally recommend the test you can do anywhere than the doctors office. At home my blood pressure is 95/ 85 but at the doctors it’s 180/ 140! There really needs to be a study about all the things that raise PSA! Good luck and keep doing research! Joe Perry

You are correct. I had a PSA of 2.9 and my uro wanted another test in six weeks. About 7 months ago I was given a random PSA test and it came back as 10.71. The year before I was a 1.23. Talk about being scared! I saw the urologist who examined me and said he felt a "small bump" on my prostate and wanted to do a biopsy. Talk about having a bad time! Had the biopsy and all 12 cores came back benign. Tons of bleeding for about 4 days. Come to find out that when I took the first PSA test I had sex the same morning. I was never told not to. This I believe was my spike. For the next test, I stayed away from sexual activity for a couple days before the test and was also taking Saw Palmetto once a day for 4 weeks before my test. The test came back with a 4.03. My age is 58 and the next exam the other urologist felt nothing. So I was extremely relieved. I hope you find there was nothing wrong with you also.

@@HealthierThroughProstateCancer Sorry for the late reply my comment section was not working for some reason. Yes I will check out your video and thanks for your reply..
Elevated PSA means nothing. I've had a high PSA for about 25 years. Had a biopsy around the year 2000 and then in 2013. Both were negative. My PSA went up a little bit recently, and I was referred to a urologist. I had a prostate MRI done and the results indicated cancer being unlikely. Why should I worry about lowering my PSA when an elevated PSA has been meaningless for me?
This video is about making sure that you don't do something to termporarily increase your PSA giving you a false reading before a test. However, your high PSA is likely the result of one of the things I mention in the video
So I had a psa of 13 back at the beginning of July 2024. I went on a vegan diet and lost almost 30 lbs from my original 197lb. I recently had a psa test and it came back at 14.2. Can this increase be because of my weight loss? I.e. is there an inverse relationship between weight loss and psa levels?
Hi, I have prostrate cancer gleasson scale 3 +3 = 6 Had scan in 2020 after PSA reading of 15.4 two weeks later had biopsy having no treatment just blood test every 3 months. Second blood test dropped to 12. Three months later shot to 19.4 This was caused by cycling 3 months later dropped back to 15. Then back to 19. Now waiting to receiving latest test any day.
I would think watchful waiting is fine. But you should do it right. Which means a MRI and a perineal biopsy. I would not trust a Trans rectal biopsy . And the Sepis rate is almost 0 with the perineal which I found to be a piece of cake. 5 minutes. No pain bleeding whatsoever afterwards. Just 12 small pinches during the procedure..
@@tomslick2058 Hi Tom yes I had MIR and perineal biopsy in 2020 found two areas, then 12 months later second biopsy which they could only find one of the previous two cancerous areas
Hey there, thanks for sharing your thoughts on the approach to prostate treatment. It's a really important point you've made about being cautious and informed when choosing a urologist or deciding on a treatment plan. Surgery is indeed a significant step and it's vital to consider all options, including medication, when it comes to managing prostate issues. It's great to see you advocating for taking an active role in your healthcare decisions. Take care and stay proactive about your health!
Thanks for the tips, my uncle just went to check his health and he got 13 last month he did it again last week, its at 33, hes gettin an MRI, but he had his prostate removed like 5 years ago...
I wish him the best. Sounds like it recurred so he needs to have a pet psma to see where it is located now. Happy to work with him to manage both the cancer and improve the outcomes of the treatment through nutrition and exercise
Hi Tyrone, how have you been? Sorry for the late reply, has there been any news? What did the MRI show? if you want to talk more and get some support, please check my website, thanks
A physical exam is not enough to know if you have prostate cancer. Usually if it’s very very high you will need a biopsy to be sure there is no other way to check this. Don’t play with it the biopsy if necessary is basically completely painless slightly embarrassing, but better than being dead.
After looking through the internet I found that interval training should not be done for at least a week before the psa test. We really need at home testing! Stress can also raise psa levels at the doctors office. At home my blood pressure is around 100/66. At the doctors it’s 180/ 135. It takes about 4 days after a doctors visit for it to go back to normal. Another thing I thought was strange is my doctor told me that you don’t need to change anything before the psa test. I remember that it takes me three weeks to sort of recover from a marathon. We need more studies on exercise and it’s affects on psa.
That's indeed something that we need more of Joe, I agree! I wonder how many thousands of people had undergone unnecessary images or biopsies from an elevated PSA test when it was only caused by something on the list that I mentioned, and not from cancer.
I want to say that doctors who didn't instruct you to avoid having sex, doing exercises, and making sure you do not have an urinary infection before running a PSA test are dishonest
@@theSilvioRoesler Thank you! I remember as a young adult my blood pressure at the doctors was always high. But after having negative results I got my own blood pressure tester and got good results.
My psa level for the last 12 months has been 12.4. Ive had 2 MRI scans and no cancer showing, but it did show that my prostrate had inflammation and it was enlarged slightly. My Urologist reassured me that is why my psa level is high. Plus i workout at the gym and do a lot of power walking on the treadmill. All this can effect my psa levels. But its always in the back of my mind as my dad and grandfather both passed away with prostrate cancer.
Hey there, I am not a doctor, but I think you should seriously consider getting a biopsy. Here is my personal experience: My dad had prostate cancer so I started monitoring mine. My PSA started going up from 3.2 to 6.5 and staying there for about a year. I got two MRI's this year which indicated no signs of cancer but I was still concerned because of family history so I decided to get a biopsy and sure enough, I have prostate cancer, Gleeson Score of 4+3=7 in four out of 12 samples! My genomic score was bad too, .96! I just completed a PSMA PET scan and pending the results, will be faced next week with making a choice in therapy, either surgery or a choice of several types of radiation. If you have eliminated all the causes for an elevated PSA and it remains high, you should SERIOUSLY consider getting a biopsy, especially with your family history. I wish you all the best!
@@toddmorrison7342 Hi, What are your PSMA results? Did it show an uptake of PSMA in the prostate? I have a rising fast PSA from 12 to 22 in 4 months, but MRI scan showed no suspicious lesion. I also went for a PET PSMA scan which showed no uptake of PSMA in the prostate! I am now scheduled for a biopsy next week despite the fact that both scans showed no sign of cancer. I am baffling at the results because the asymptomatic chronic prostatitis and moderate BPH that I have cannot push the PSA level to that high at all.
@@hn5460 My PSMA PET came back clear, I have my final consultation with my urologist tomorrow, then meeting with an oncologist on November 3rd, will make my final decision for treatment over this coming weekend. FYI, here's something no one talks about regarding post biopsy: your orgasms are blood and not very comfortable for about a month. I have a wonderful girlfriend and we worked on this to purge the blood as soon as practicable in an effort to restore normalcy. It is not a pleasant experience, so I'm glad we made the extra effort to expedite the process.
Also check your inflammation, as it can cause PSA readings to go up. HsCRP is the test my doctor used to check for inflammation. Mine has come down to 0.13 mg/dL on a diet of just red meat. It has been as high as 56 mg/dL while eating the standard American diet.
While eating only red meat is not healthy, it seems like you must have cut out a lot of other stuff like sugar, processed food, and a lot of fats, and that must have improved your readings. I recommend keeping those things out of your life, but starting to eat more legumes, vegetables, fish, and eggs, not just red meat! Thanks for sharing
@@HealthierThroughProstateCancer I’ve eliminated all plant foods. They’re useless to me. My doctor told me I was anemic and malnourished while eating just plant foods, so I gave them up and changed to meat only.
I had an unnecessary biopsy 4-years ago. Makes me so angry that I wasn’t given other options. I did not find the procedure painful or uncomfortable, but I was given a potent antibiotic and since that time I’ve been hypersensitive to all other antibiotics.
Hi Roger, thank you for sharing this with us. I'm sorry to hear that, it's a real pain when prostate biopsies are being conducted without Good reason. They might cause a whole bunch of complications and they should be there last resort. An MRI should be used as a first method for diagnosis. How are you now? Do your have prostate cancer?
Don't mess around. Get a PSA test with your annual blood work. Where I live healthcare won't pay for that test until levels start to rise but it is relatively cheap. Determine a cut off point with your doctor as to just when any increase becomes an area of concern. Mind your family history. Cancer can run in families. I started having my PSA checked around 55. It gradually climbed up to over 8 and at that point tests were done and it was determined I actually had cancer. I was lucky enough to be able to get brachytherapy (insertion of radioactive seeds) but very close to the cutoff for that treatment. After 5 years of PSA monitoring the finally cut me loose. My brother, on the other hand, had his prostate removed but it has come back at least once. Digital exams don't tell the whole story.
Thank you for sharing that Roger! It's frustrating how in many places they don't cover tests like PSA that are specific to men's health. It was a great decision to pay out of pocket and get tested once a year, it definitely paid off for you catching it early. Prostate cancer incidence has definitely a genetic risk factor, I will be talking about the things that cause prostate cancer, and what things make the disease progress (get worse). Thank you!
@@mikelldaley9078 Sometimes it would not so much be the level but the rate of increase that matters. Also does cancer run in the family. My paternal GF made it to 94 with just prostatitis. My Dad died at 65 from a heart attack. I wasn't diagnosed with cancer until passed that age but my brother was younger.
I just had my PSA checked I do it every year. The last 2 years I was around 4.5 PSA this year 2 days ago had my blood work done PSA went up to 7.3. I just heard about Free PSA test so I had that done my number was 11.4
I'm an avid biker thats also being treated for prostate cancer. None of my Mayo treatment team have raised a concern regarding this activity and psa testing. Looking at clinical research on-line, there doesnt appear to be a clear correlation between biking and elevated psa. Nevertheless, I abstain from biking 48 hours prior to a psi test. More research is needed!
However, you would kill two birds with one stone If you just use nutrition and exercise to manage both hypertension and prostate cancer at the same time with no side effects, only additional benefits! You can check my website for more information and support. Thank you, Ronald.
All I would add is: If you go to the urologist with the basic PSA test and a reading >4 and the doctor wants to biopsy. Put you clothes back on and leave immediately, the doctor is just generating income for his practice. I did this 5 years ago when and the doctor had not even ordered a %free test. The standard of care in the US is to order a %free test, then to do an MRI and proceed from there,
I am 55. I had a PSA from when I was 37 of a 4.6 now at 55 it's a 9.6. I had 2 MRI's and 2 biopsies. The MRI's found 2 rad 4 lesions that were biopsied and no Cancer. Both Biopsies came back zero suspicious. My last biopsie was around a 7.6 so now I will be getting another MRI. I am symptom free in my prostate. Not sure how the PSA goes up with nothing suspicious going on.
Hi Brad, thanks for your comment. Yours is an interesting case. Please let me know what will the new MRI show when you get the results. Do you have any issues with urination or bladder control? You might have chronic low-grade prostatitis, which in some cases is due to bacteria (I recommend using natural anti-microbial foods to manage this after you speak with a urologist) or due to chronic anxiety/stress. If you want to talk 1-to-1 feel free to visit my website and email me. Cheers
I got above normal PSA result from test this morning. However, upon listening to your discussion would it be possible to have high PSA if one frequently wear a supporter? I have inguinal hernia. To remedy the problem I wear the supporter frequently. Infact I was wearing the supporter when blood sample was being extracted from my forearm.
Hey there, thanks for sharing your situation. I totally get why you'd be curious about your PSA levels, especially with wearing a supporter for your hernia. It's a good question! From what I know, certain things like hernia supports might affect PSA levels a bit, but it's not the same for everyone. Since you've got an inguinal hernia and use a supporter, it's a great idea to chat about this with your doctor. They're the best ones to give you the lowdown on how this could be playing a part. If you ever want to talk more about this or need a hand with managing things, just give me a shout. We can team up and work on this together, while you keep up with your doctor's advice too.
That is a very high value, but they can't just diagnose you with prostate cancer based on PSA alone. Please discuss with a good oncologist and ask for an MRI. Good luck
@@HealthierThroughProstateCancer I had an MRI with contrast and same with bone scan. Prostate looked like a head of cauliflower and lymph nodes in lower area looked like one large mass not individual nodes. Why don't they say at what point it will kill you?
@@gvet47 I would suggest finding a good oncologist, and see what available options you have. There's a lot that can be done even if it has spread to the lymph nodes (locally advanced).
Ted, this is a medical issue and you need to consult a medical professional, not only because they will give you medical advice SPECIFIC to your own individual case, but because they will also know where to refer you to assess the status of your prostate. If you are currently unhappy with your medical professional, I would recommend seeking a second opinion rather than not seeing anyone altogether
Higher doses of Tramadol, opiate pain medication can cause transient urinary retention but I think it is due to the relaxing muscles around urethra. It is doughtful that Tramadol affects PSA levels or prostate enlargement.
Thank you for your comment, @jetsetter8541! You've brought up an interesting point about Tramadol and its effects. You're right that Tramadol, being a pain medication, can influence how the muscles around the urethra behave. While Tramadol might not directly affect PSA levels or prostate size, it's always good to keep an eye on how different medications play a role in your overall health puzzle.
Hi Obwan, it's true, sex or masturbation can have a significant increase in PSA levels for up to 2-3 days after. Make sure you take that into account before you get your blood tests done.
It is the other way around. Prostatic inflammation, infection, digital examination, cancer all increase PSA. You don’t control PSA levels. You try to control the etiology. Try, that’s all, may or may not succeed.
3 years post prostectomy and after 3 years my psa went from 0.015 to 0.030 and "although" my PSA has technically doubled, it's still low BUT having no prostate I'm still kinda anxious. After 2-years of ZERO testosterone I'm pushing hard to increase my testosterone stuck at just under 300. Double edge sword because UCSF does not subscribe to TRT with prostate cancer patients

Hmmm... i am missing one strong point, i thought that ejaculating / having sex or masturbating prior taking a bloodsample for PSA measurement will spike the PSA pretty high?

Hi Tom, if I were in your case, I would try to improve my diet and exercise if possible, then get re-tested after accounting for the items I covered in this video. After you get the results, schedule an appointment with your health professional to discuss them.
Do not screw around waiting. Get the biopsy done. It’s the gold standard . You will know if you have cancer or not. If cancer is detected early on you can be completely cured. If it spreads beyond the prostate there is no curing it , but it can be managed. Get your answer . I waited two years cuz I was afraid of biopsy . Once PSA popped up to 7 I had it done. And my surgeon has cured me.
Hi Joe, I would say blood test, but I would simply do my physician's recommended test, as they will need it for diagnosis. Vigorous activity would affect the result, so to make sure you get the most accurate reading, try to avoid the items mentioned in the video. Thanks
Dropping your PSA is not the goal. Ensuring you don't have cancer is the goal. Monitoring your PSA is a good thing. But using external approaches to lower PSA is not really the goal. You don't want to mask the monitoring test. That said, finding external methods to shrink the prostate are very worthwhile. Is there any research indicating that these actually block or reduce cancer though? I think we need more time to tell. The last thought - shrinking the prostate is useful if you have difficulty with flow... so all good. But I just thought important to mention just lowering the PSA is not the goal if it masks underlying issues.
Hey Mark, thanks for your insightful comment! You've hit the nail on the head - the ultimate goal is indeed ensuring good health and not just focusing on lowering the PSA number. Monitoring PSA is crucial, but like you said, it’s important not to mask potential underlying issues. Your point about finding methods to shrink the prostate, especially for flow difficulties, is spot on. Research is ongoing to fully understand how lifestyle changes might impact prostate cancer directly. It’s a field that’s constantly evolving, and staying updated is key. Thanks again for your valuable contribution to the discussion, Mark. Stay proactive and informed!
My new question about psa testing is if prolonged fasting affects your psa. Some of us have lost their appestat due to their life time work conditions. No time to eat at work.
Hi Joe, I am not sure how fasting would affect PSA. However, you must remember it's not the high PSA that leads to prostate cancer, but the reverse. So if something like an infection increases PSA, that doesn't mean you will get prostate cancer

@@tyroned532 yep, definitely. The things I talk about in the video increase PSA. You should mention that beer made with hops (a phyto estrogen) is probably the main cause of prostate cancer in N America. Beer should be drunk only by older women in need of hormonal support. Beer will not only make a man grow tits but will also enlarge his prostate and lead to all sorts of plumbing problems. Learn the cobbler pose (yoga) to strengthen perenium area muscles, practice it every day and say good bye to worrying about prostate cancer. Even thinking of possible cancer can create it. Learn to identify your prostate and how it feels, not by having a Dr stick his fingers up your rear, but by simply stopping your urine flow when having a piss. That muscle controling the flow is your prostate. Happy practice. Cobblers of India never get prostate cancer because of how they sit. A good idea is to avoid couches and comfortable chairs also.

Hi mate. Both exercise and sex can raise PSA levels. Then you can talk to your physician about the result, but you'll then be certain that sex or exercise haven't affected it

Thank you Bari!
i have high psa but nada cancer

This prostate issue is really mind boggling to me. I've gone the whole route and they can't find any prostate cancer. I'm 76 now and have been toiling with PSA testing since 2017.
Go 0 carb, it’ll drop by 50%
Suggestion: Avoid any sexual activity for at least 48 hours before having a PSA test. Last fall my tests were in the 4.2 to 4.5 range then about a month ago it spiked at 6.24 which raised alarms with my urologist. Two weeks later and after avoiding any activity down there for 96 hours the re-test came back at 3.8
I had a nearly identical follow up test, and discussed with my urologist. He advised abstaining 2-3 days max prior to your spa test.
@ricklosangeles5043 I had a similar experience years ago, and that's what inspired me to research the PSA test.
My initial result was 9.66. Four weeks later 14.2. Should I be worried?
@@schmingusss you should ask your doctor what the next step is. Worrying won't help you the key is to act as soon as possible.

I had it removed ..I was knocked out and awake never knowing what happened. Most discomfort was having that Catheter.
Now its control the pee time
My urologist finally told me after years of being tested to avoid certain activities. The less you are informed the more money they make.
(my Gleason score reflected this finding)
Despite the optimistic prognosis from my biopsy, I still read up on the subject, and visited even more urologists- one at UCLA.
Nine years ago I had a PSA of 93.75. They gave me 5 years. I'm still here.

All that sitting driving a semi truck, and putting on weight I believe caused the high reading, i.e
6.9.
Well done Thomas! You also likely improved myriad other aspects of your health by reducing your body fat! Great job!
The doctors I have used know very little about the connection of exercise on psa levels.

good for you ! i am a biker and high psa but 2 biospy and no cancer. go figure
Thanks for sharing David!
Please could you specifically name the kind of lazer surgery?
@@RC-br1ps - I don’t remember the name, but you can do an internet search on it (it’s fairly common). The doctor inserts the laser (with a camera) up the urethra to the prostate and removes whatever is blocking. You’re completely sedated and have no recollection of what happened. Sexual activity raises your PSA. ALWAYS go at least 3 complete days with NO sexual activity at all before having blood draw for a PSA. It can lower your PSA by 2+ points.
I agree! If you want an accurate test, you should abstain 2-3 days of any sexual activity and masturbation before getting your regular PSA check

I am 75. Just saw my doc and PSA was 2.8. For several years my PSA was 1-2. I recall reading an article by the doc that discovered it. Said it was very unreliable. Also years ago another doc said all men will eventually have cancer in prostate. Something else will kill you.
Thanks a lot for these explanations.

Do you mind sharing your psa numbers?
Thanks for commenting Paul, and good luck with your test! Keep following what your doctor tells you, and try to improve your diet and move more!

Nowadays surgeons always go for surgery even if it may be cured by medicine hence we should be very careful to select a Urologist.
Happy to work with him to manage both the cancer and improve the outcomes of the treatment through nutrition and exercise
hi there, after a good few months, it has risen again to now and 8.4. After having a biopsy, they now want to do an MRI. Should I have any worries?
Hi Tyrone, how have you been? Sorry for the late reply, has there been any news? What did the MRI show? if you want to talk more and get some support, please check my website, thanks
A physical exam is not enough to know if you have prostate cancer. Usually if it’s very very high you will need a biopsy to be sure there is no other way to check this. Don’t play with it the biopsy if necessary is basically completely painless slightly embarrassing, but better than being dead.
I agree but nowadays an MRI is more accurate and not invasive!
amen

This is probably benign prostate hyperplasia but please keep checking regularly and follow the advice of your medical professional
@@toddmorrison7342 Hi,
What are your PSMA results?
It is not a pleasant experience, so I'm glad we made the extra effort to expedite the process.
i have high psa but cancer free. i do bike a lot. former runner. lift weights
Thank you!
i had turp. have high psa but 2 biospies and no cancer. i bike a lot and stressed out can affect it
@@mikelldaley9078 Sometimes it would not so much be the level but the rate of increase that matters. Also does cancer run in the family. My paternal GF made it to 94 with just prostatitis. Great video, thanks.
Glad you liked it!

Well done Jim, kudos to being well informed!
Both total cholesterol and HDL cholesterol raise PSA. PC patients starting statins see dramatic reductions in PSA.
The standard of care in the US is to order a %free test, then to do an MRI and proceed from there,
Thank you for sharing that Tom!

Brother got it. He quit drinking cow milk. Prevention is key Go WFPB!

For lowering PSA, I would recommend walking more, trying to improve sleep quality and duration, switching to a diet with most of the food being leafy greens and cruciferous vegetables, cutting out sugar, dairy, and alcohol. And adding items like pumpkin seed oil, saw palmetto, and willow herb. Good luck and let me know how it went!
I was told to drink green tea for kidneys and two shots of cranberry and exercise by walking, and watch the foods I consume.

Walking is an excellent, gentle form of exercise that's not only good for your physical health but can also lift your spirits, which is super important. As for diet, focusing on fresh, whole foods and keeping an eye on your intake is a smart move.
