Absolutely correct! Any bouncing of the prostate does elevate the psa. I’ve been on hormone therapy for 13 years and the major reason for high levels is recumbent, stationary bike exercise and long motorcycle rides. I now stop any similar activities for two weeks prior to a blood draw.
Heavy Deadlifts and Squats will also increase your PSA levels. My doctor disagreed that it would. We proved it by me doing them the day before my blood test and then a second test when I had not been lifting heavy. Increase as much as two points

11 years ago I called my primary physician for a urinary infection (burning while peeing). She told me to come in for an exam, including a PSA. She called me and asked me to schedule an appointment with a prostate doctor, but wouldn't tell me why. I thought about it and called her back and asked why? She said that my PSA was high and that I should be checked, but didn't want to tell me how high so I wouldn't be worried. She ended up telling me that it was 8.5. I got an appointment 3 weeks later, and the doctor was furious that she tested me while I had an active infection!!! The PSA was now down to 5.3. After another month it was down to 4.3. Had an MRI and biopsy, volume was 49. I was 58 years old at the time, and now 69. I have had 3 biopsies, 5 MRI's, and 2 DNA tests, and PSA tested every 6 months. Current PSA is 7.2. Prostate volume is now 80, I pee fine, and my current doctor has suggested that I only test once a year now, that something else is going to kill me. Now to my question. What is your perspective on how a urinary or bladder infection affects the PSA? I don't see much of that talked about. Thanks.
Happy new year! Thank you for sharing your journey, and I'm sorry to hear about the rollercoaster of tests and concerns you've been through. It's understandable to have questions about how urinary or bladder infections might affect PSA levels. Generally, infections can cause PSA levels to rise temporarily because they can cause inflammation in the prostate. It's a bit like the prostate is saying, "Hey, something's up!" when there's an infection. So, it's always a good idea to consider this factor when interpreting PSA results. Your story is a testament to staying informed and asking the right questions - you're doing an excellent job navigating this complex path. Keep advocating for your health, and remember, understanding is a powerful tool in your journey.
Fyi, I pulled a groin muscle doing leg press. Two weeks later I went on vacation. Rode a stationary bike with unpadded seat, had lots of sex. Went the next week for a physical. My PSA quadrupled. 1.2 to 4.8. The Md was all over repeating then biopsy etc. I waited 6 months till I had no muscle issue, or chronic sensitivity. Repeat was 1.8. 6 months later 1.2. I was in my 60’s at the time.
Hey Michael, thanks for sharing your story - it's quite a journey you've had with your PSA levels! Sounds like a mix of adventure and a bit of an 'ouch' moment with that groin muscle. It's fascinating how different activities, even those we enjoy, can impact our health in unexpected ways. Your experience is a great reminder of how our bodies react to physical stress, whether it's from exercise, injury, or other activities (like your vacation adventures!). It's also a good example of how important it is to give our bodies time to heal and recover before jumping to conclusions about health metrics like PSA levels. In terms of managing prostate health, balancing exercise with proper recovery is key. Gentle activities that don't strain the body, especially if you're dealing with injuries or fatigue, are super important. And when it comes to diet, a little shift towards more anti-inflammatory foods like berries, leafy greens, and omega-3 rich fish can make a noticeable difference. Keep living life to the fullest, Michael, and take care of that groin muscle!
Damn you are good! I am not quitting running because of doctors! I have had false information from them for at least 30 years! The worst was about 4 months before my 1996 Boston Marathon. I will always remember the doctor telling me “ You better get your shit together you do not have much time to live!” I ran the Boston Marathon in April!
Any idea of by what % exercise would increase one's PSA? When I have my periodic tests I normally try and have it around the same time in the morning, and take an easy stroll to the clinic for the blood test. Am also someone with low grade prostate cancer and BPH (had TURP surgery few weeks ago). PSA was 14.5 even while on Flomax and Avodart, but thankfully off those pills now.
He cited a study that showed a mere 10% increase in PSA after exercise. Your elevated PSA was due to having an enlarged prostate. As your prostate continued to grow, the number of PSA-producing cells in your prostate continued to rise, and therefore your PSA continued to rise. Flowmax is an alpha blocker. It doesn't affect the size of your prostate or your PSA level. Nor does Flowmax stop your prostate from growing. It just makes it easier for you to pee while having an enlarged prostate. But as your prostate continues to grow, the Flowmax will become less and less effective, to the point that you may need a TURP. Avodart is a beta blocker. Taking Avodart for 4-6 months, can reduce prostate size and therefore lower PSA. I assume you needed a TURP because your prostate had grown so large that the Flowmax had stopped working. A TURP doesn't cure BPH. Even after a TURP, your prostate will continue to grow, and as it continues to grow, your PSA will continue to rise. Eventually, you may need to take Flowmax again or have another TURP.
@@herrickinman9303 even post TURP my PSA reading was 18.6 have had a bone scan recently, another biopsy in about a week and an additional PSA test in early Feb. lol
Nitric oxide is a global vasodilator, so it does have an effect on the blood vessels of the prostate, causing increased blood flow. Thank you for reaching out, @biplabguha3088! It sounds like you're navigating quite a journey with your health. First off, it's great that you're staying on top of things with your tests. With a PSA level of 15.77 and a diagnosis of inguinal hernia, it's like you're solving a complex puzzle, and each piece is important. For the hernia, gentle movements and avoiding heavy lifting are key - think of it as treating yourself as carefully as you would a delicate antique. As for your PSA, incorporating a balanced diet and some light exercise can be beneficial. Picture it as tuning an old radio; small adjustments can make a big difference in getting a clear signal. While I can offer general tips, it's always best to work closely with your doctor for personalized advice, and maybe get a second opinion from a urologist/oncologist who specializes in prostate. Remember, you're the captain of your health ship.
There is an arbitrary level of 4 ng/mL in many countries, but that does not mean you have prostate cancer. There are some men with over 8 without prostate cancer and some with less than 3 with prostate cancer. Most important is to see the change (and rate of change) from your previous test. Good luck!
I'm 69 years old. I lift weights 2 x's a week heavy dumbbell curls (for me at least). After, the treadmill at an 8 incline for 30 minutes 3 x's a week. I'm supposed to get a PSA test this week. Should I stop working out for this test?
Unfortunately I'm not able to give you information on that. However, PSA is a very common blood test, are you sure aren't there any blood collection centres closer to you?
Hi Bern, that is an interesting question. Is your prostate removed entirely? if so then PSA in the blood would only exist if there were metastases, in which case then any form of exercise, especially aerobic would cause an increase in PSA, as the increased blood flow would pass through the metastatic sites.
Also, I lifted weights since I was 16 years old. It's genetics. So if your dad or grandfather had prostate cancer, look out. My grandfather had it so I tested when I was 40. Go thing I started early or I wouldn't be typing this now.💪mrwtby
Why don’t many doctors know this information? There is a great post from a Urologist in New Zealand telling about the many things that raise the psa! Stress, high blood pressure and exercise are a few of the items.
I have not come across any information about coffee or caffeine in regards to PSA. It's important to remember that PSA is just a metric, not the cause of the issues. However, plain coffee without any milk or sugar when drunk in moderation (That is one to two cups per day, maximum), can have health benefits. I hope this helped!
Hey William thanks for the question. I wouldn't suspect so, unless there is another issue there, such as an enlarged prostate. So the issue is not the masturbation per se, (although nothing should be done at excess) but the enlarged prostate. There's a lot you can do to reduce an enlarged prostate and manage the symptoms. Hope that helps, check my website for more info
Yes, and type of exercise may cause a transient increase in PSA, but aerobic seems to cause a higher increase, due to the increase of heart rate for a longer period. That does not mean it will give you prostate cancer. It may however give you a less accurate PSA blood test result
I am 66 year old and have been a competitive, long distance runner for 52 years now, plus, plant-based (vegan) for 50 years. I had my first PSA test in 2016 (at age 59) which came back at 2.8, then the following test a year later was just 1.4, then 1.3 the next, then 1.4, and 1.5 two years after that. Now suddenly it's back up to the original reading of 2.8 like in 2016. I have no symptoms at all, but was diagnosed with BPH way back in my mid 40's.... Also note - I have taken low dose 20mg Lipitor (statin) for 26 years now. ..and yes, I did run 10K the evening before my latest PSA test last week. Also, the testing centre mentioned that a new "analyser" in now being used for this test... So what gives? Why did my PSA result suddenly drop from 2.8 to 1.4 back in 2016/17....and then stay at that low level for 5 years, and now (supposedly) go back up to the original (exact) 2.8 level again. Should I be concerned, and get a re-test....with zero exercise beforehand? Cheers...
Just as an update here: I did a PSA re-test (at the same lab) 4 weeks later with refraining from any runs for 5 days prior to the test and my result back went down from the 2.8 to 1.9.
Thanks for sharing that Kevin, keep doing regular PSA checks and keep a record as you have. Speak to a general practitioner and get their opinion if you feel concerned. They will be able to examine your case with more detail

There are some men with over 8 without prostate cancer and some with less than 3 with prostate cancer. Most important is to see the change (and rate of change) from your previous test. Good luck!
@@HealthierThroughProstateCancermy urologist will see MR prostata screen by PSA 2.5....
I'm 69 years old. I lift weights 2 x's a week heavy dumbbell curls (for me at least). After, the treadmill at an 8 incline for 30 minutes 3 x's a week. I'm supposed to get a PSA test this week. Should I stop working out for this test?
Just don't do any vigorous exercise or cycling 48h prior to the test! Can still do light intensity!
Thank you.
How about STRESS. What if one had to drive on aggressive So Cal freeways for 2 hours to get to my test?
Unfortunately I'm not able to give you information on that. However, PSA is a very common blood test, are you sure aren't there any blood collection centres closer to you?
Does cycling negatively the PSA level if you have already had your prostate removed?
Hi Bern, that is an interesting question. Is your prostate removed entirely? if so then PSA in the blood would only exist if there were metastases, in which case then any form of exercise, especially aerobic would cause an increase in PSA, as the increased blood flow would pass through the metastatic sites.
Hello sir my dad is 60 yes and PSA level is 1.01. Sir what is the solution?
Hi Manish, did you mean 10? or 1? 1 is low, I wouldn't be worried to be honest, but always consult with a medical professional
Also, I lifted weights since I was 16 years old. It's genetics. So if your dad or grandfather had prostate cancer, look out. My grandfather had it so I tested when I was 40. Go thing I started early or I wouldn't be typing this now.💪mrwtby
Very well said, if it runs in the family, then keep a very close eye!
What about swimming for 3km-5km ?
That will also potentially increase it if you do it within 24 hours before your test
I hope cycling is the reason for my 5.25 PSA level!
I would recommend going a medical personal, that's a bit high for resting levels
I'm in that process right now. Thanks!@@HealthierThroughProstateCancer
Why don’t many doctors know this information?
There is a great post from a Urologist in New Zealand telling about the many things that raise the psa!
Stress, high blood pressure and exercise are a few of the items.
Thank you Joe!
Is coffee good for prostate or PSA?😅
I have not come across any information about coffee or caffeine in regards to PSA. It's important to remember that PSA is just a metric, not the cause of the issues. However, plain coffee without any milk or sugar when drunk in moderation (That is one to two cups per day, maximum), can have health benefits. I hope this helped!
Can masturbating excessively create a blockage and lead to seminal disruption? If so, can it be unblocked?
Hey William thanks for the question. I wouldn't suspect so, unless there is another issue there, such as an enlarged prostate. So the issue is not the masturbation per se, (although nothing should be done at excess) but the enlarged prostate. There's a lot you can do to reduce an enlarged prostate and manage the symptoms. Hope that helps, check my website for more info
What about sexual activity and orgasm in the hours before a PSA test? Will that impact a PSA test reading?
It definitely will!
Get psa test done after 2-4 days of sex doing.
Does constipation cause pressure on the prostate and subsequent PSA spike?
Hi Peter, good question, I'm not too sure about that!
how to low psa level
Send me an email and we can work together using exercise and nutrition to lower PSA!
is it safe to take creatine if you have prostate cancer
You should ask your medical professional, but personally I haven't heard of any contraindications for creatine
How about sometimes driving an E- trike ? Is it bad?
Prolonged aerobic exercise will increase PSA in general, it's not bad, it's just you have to keep it in mind before getting blood work
Not taking testosterone supplements? Are we talking TRT or over the counter herbal supplements?
TRT would be what I mean, but other medications that affect hormone levels could affect PSA as well
Disagree….Woking out intensely with weights will increase Blood flow a lot….hence the pump.
Yes, and type of exercise may cause a transient increase in PSA, but aerobic seems to cause a higher increase, due to the increase of heart rate for a longer period. That does not mean it will give you prostate cancer. It may however give you a less accurate PSA blood test result
What about sex? Does that affect your PSA levels?
Yes it does! You can check my other video where I list 7 things increasing PSA that you should be aware of.
Hi is regular sex good for prostate?
Regular sex if done safely is good for everything!
Cheers...
Just as an update here:
I did a PSA re-test (at the same lab) 4 weeks later with refraining from any runs for 5 days prior to the test and my result back went down from the 2.8 to 1.9.
Sir my father is 60 yrs old and his PSA is 1.01. Sir can you tell me the solution please.
Thanks for sharing that Kevin, keep doing regular PSA checks and keep a record as you have. Speak to a general practitioner and get their opinion if you feel concerned. They will be able to examine your case with more detail
I would say that a higher psa number may be a indication of overtraining.
Dok how about dumb bell and barbell can increase PSA level?thank you
Any exercise can increase PSA so avoid that 24-48 hours before a test to get a more accurate reading!
