after you've thrown the pow put the shell up on top of the cloud and damage boost with the mushroom you have up into the shell and then use that to damage and go down with the donut blocks? I don't know it is just a thought it's probably not gonna work as I haven't tried it myself but I think it may shave a few miliseconds if you get it down if you can place the objects in that order I'll watch back the video and see
idk about the squished puzzle, but the one after its possible to get a true ending. get hit, land on Yoshi and take him up top, jump off Yoshi and drop him through the saws, then land on him when you finish the level. It won't be world record speed but it'll be true ending.
Your facecam was in front of a hole the whole time, so people couldn't see that the items were going to fall off the level. That's why they kept saying "behind you". But it devolved into an in-joke later on.
On Destruction Puzzle (12:52), I think the intended strat was to hit the bomb block, get the P switch, go through the door, get the helmet, and hit the P switch to turn the block into a coin so you can drop down with the bomb. That avoids using a P-jump, and might be a few seconds quicker too :-)
at 35:00 I think you could have gotten a Yoshi True-Ending if you dropped him through the spikes while you still had invincibility frames and landed on him after hitting the goal tape. Just a guess on a year-old video that I can't test that somebody has probably already commented lol.

in the quick puzzle, the spring in the wall knocks the spiney to the adjacent wall. that was strange and beautiful. that certainly could be an interesting mechanic. its one ive not seen yet watching this channel's videos randomly between JO seshes.

I skipped ahead since it was shown previously. The thwomp kills them, then you go back and get a bunch more helmets. Since it's just getting more helmets over and over I edited it out.
20:48 i see cheese potential(?) put the pow underneath the launcher then get the shell have it bounce off the launcher and hit then block that spawns the P-Switch so you can grab it at the donut hole
It would be a cool puzzle if there was a line of chompers that you had to run across with invincibility, but the invincibility runs off before you get to the end. So you have to place all these blocks in the right place to get the star to bounce where you want so that it can last long enough for you to just make it.
On the Get a Life puzzle, you may be able to have Yoshi at the end by jumping off him, dropping him through the saw. You'd then mount Yoshi shortly after clearing the level.
You know you can do the wall and notebook thing in real life too. Just stand beside a wall and tell someone to drop a notebook on your head and BOOM , you are on the other side of the wall.

#SquishedPuzzle : I guess it will be a bit faster (because of Little Mario wearing a helmet Big Mario sneaking) to actually not put on the shell until you got over the first saw.You can lay down the shell after collecting the mushroom and then throw the POW to eliminate the plant. During the POW fly grab the shell in order to not get it destroyed. And than put in on after the first saw. Well at least in theory this might work, I cannot test this. Btw.: You do awesome Super Mario Maker videos. In the last days your content totally taunted me. Thanks, good job and keep moving forward!
Soft lock. It's when you are literally 100% trapped in a level. You can jump, move all directions, and it won't help. Also in a soft lock, you have to start over. You can't die. Many ways to get softlocked. So losing a puzzle, even if you can't win, doesn't mean you're softlocked. Hope this helped.
It's called a "soft" lock because the game has not actually crashed or frozen but you just found a way to get yourself stuck so that you're forced to reset. So it's essentially like a crash but due to a design flaw rather than a glitch. Most professional games try to avoid soft-locks as much as possible, but in mario maker levels, people don't always care because you can just pause and reset. Still, if you want your level to be good and polished you should include a way to die and restart just because a soft-lock is kind of lame design. But for cool puzzles like this, design is obviously less important.
Cornpopz, it's also good to mention that some levels, such as these puzzle levels, soft lock you deliberately as a way of telling you that you're doing something wrong, or to make you go in a certain way or order.
+CarlSagan42 for the squishy wr, can you activate the bomb on the initial run by and still have time to go up, grab the pow, and toss it underneath before the cannon drops? If so, I think there might be a way to end up grabbing the p switch and speeding up the ending too
Yes you can. I did that actually in my initial attempts. Unfortunately, it's just not fast enough to make the next cycle of the platform/pswitch timer. So I spent like 2 hours learning that, which barely works, only to have it make the ending impossible xD

You should wait a while for the behind you stuff to fade, then rig up a few eye hooks in the ceiling and get some clear line, hang a doll or something on it and rig it so you can pull it up discreetly so it'll pop up behind you while you're maybe scrolling through the level list (so you can keep one hand free to pull the line) Freak them out with it
It's kind of hard to reconcile the regular spaghetti factory of Carl's play on stream with the smooth operator gameplay of his world record runs. Like how is the guy who can do the latter also the guy who has such trouble managing items when he's trying to figure the puzzles out?

Hey Carl, isn't the item throw into spin jump considered a Kaizo trick of some sort? I recall you beating another puzzle level where you had to escort a spiny as well (the one with giant wigglers on a track in the top left iirc), however I believe you refused to use that sort of technique because it is considered advanded and instead found another way to beat the level (the intended one). Therefore, has Sean been inconsistent with the tricks he "allows" and does not, or is it possible to use the spring in "Quick Puzzle" and somehow bring the shell along with you to solve it without this advanced technique? Or am I missing something completely? Anyway, hilarious video once again. I especially liked your helmet chokes on "Squished Puzzle" :D

Did you ever find out from Sean if grabbing the p-switch was cheese? I took about 50 tries of figuring out the exact right timing of the yellow platform to get through it the fast way; didn't discover that you could grab the p-switch.
Re-upload it seems? Anyway; thanks to you I'll get Super Mario Maker next month or so. I'm gonna love and hate you for it... probably :P And maybe some day when I get good enough in the level design I might just make a puzzle or kaizo level.

Oh more enemies, environments, and items. They have all the basic stuff but there are lots of things that could be cool. For example, being able to place water or lava in a small area, maybe even some of the enemies that go in lava like Blarggs. I'd love to see different world types too, like desert landscapes, ice landscapes, etc. I'd like the pokies, chucks or dolphins from SMW, the sun or tornado thing from SMB3. There are lots of things they could add and I'm sure they'll keep adding stuff (like they did with skewers).

A "Kaizo" trick is an extremely difficult platforming trick that the original developers did not intend to be used

10-30 minutes I'd say. Varies pretty wildly.
