    I did already buy this lens. The extra range with the 70mm is what I need. I get alot of candid photos that aren't always close of my family. This is the only camera I believe that has the image stabilization, especially in this price range. I figured this would help alot with my photos and require less lens changes when I'm out and about with my a6400

    • @randkjournal
      @randkjournal 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Sony 18-105 with OSS is my go-to all-around lens with the a6400. I was considering the 17-70 especially with the F2.8 aperture but I'm concerned about Tamron's VC stabilization. Do you use it to shoot videos? If the result is the same as in Terry's sample footage, maybe the 17-70 would be a no-go for me. Cheers.

    • @wojciechkanclerski
      @wojciechkanclerski 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@randkjournali've sold 18-105 and bought 18-135. Despite variable aperture i find it better lens for photos. Zooming is faster and it's not resetting to 18mm. Extra reach is also great.

    • @randkjournal
      @randkjournal 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@wojciechkanclerski I came across a relatively inexpensive used Sony Zeiss 16-70 F4 so I went with this instead. The biggest plus with this lens is the small form-factor which has really become a big consideration for me lately especially for traveling - keeping the gear lighter and more compact.
      At 16mm, I get extra room at the wide end which helps offset the cropping when shooting video in 4K. I do miss the extra reach but I've learned to rely on Clear Image Zoom when necessary. For photos, I was pleasantly surprised how sharp it is (at least sharp enough for me) - which is contrary to most of the things I've read about this lens. Only drawbacks - it appears a little sluggish on autofocus and, this is not a lens to be used under bad weather conditions.

    I only have 2 lenses in my camera bag for my a6400. The Sigma 56mm f1.4 and the 17-70mm Tamron f2.8 and it’s the best set you can have for apsc. You can do it all with these two, events, portrait, macro, vlogging, and the reach at 70mm converted to a 105mm full frame equivalent is niceeee. The only thing I would add to my bag would be a telephoto lens for wildlife

    The way the bokeh works is that you get the same bokeh on the APS-C if you just walk farther back, so you actually do need the 17-70mm range to get a descent bokeh, which is going to be better for portraits, but at that focal length the lens isn't that sharp. I don't think it's a problem for 4K video, more for pixel peeping.

  • @KiR_3d
    @KiR_3d ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi, Terry! Thanx for the honest review! All I've seen before yours about video shooting was like "wow! it practically makes gimbles not necessary!" I think that those people were shooting very accurately.
    Few days before I've bought a used Glidecam HD-2000 and was happy as a child )) I've got it just for a fraction of it's cost. It's pretty old and ppl now are obsessed with electronic gimbles like Chinese "Cranes" and etc. But once I've seen and heard all their issues I've decided to start with classics.
    My main lens is a very cheap XC 16-50 for Fuji. The body (X-T3) itself is claimed to be "weather protected". Meaning that I can shoot in very light rain situations easily. At least I don't need to run for some umbrella urgently. And the steadycam is on par with it.
    Here I like that Tamron 17-70 claimed to be "weather protected" too... But... Did you've tested how it live on -5 ~ -10C conditions?
    Also I imagine that I'll need about 400g more on my steadycam in the bottom (maybe 300-350 as the head in my current setup is a bit too liteweight). I'm doing my "gym" with Glidecam now almost everyday :)) So I'll become a One Punch-man if it will not kill me :)))
    Relatively to that "pixel snobbing"... If you've seen some cheap 7artisans lenses then maybe you'll become "converted" :)) When I've did my spontaneous buy of a used Meike 28mm lens the guy also did offered me 35mm 7Artisans for a good price (for almost 2x more than Meike)... I've found that 7Artisans can't handle sharp shots (of far away objects) even with the fully closed diaphragm! I've noticed that even my current cheap Fujicon is much better! Meike does the job very well. I've got it for ~50$ and it's a good little thing (I have no fixes yet) to shoot at night.
    I'm seriously thinking about this Tamron but I think I'll wait about a year and the prices for the used units will become lower since Tamron will make some better lens (they can IMO).

      @@leeteivans2509 can't really say, because I ended up selling mine not long after that comment lol. I didn't really try vlogging with it much because I found 17mm wasn't wide enough, especially for someone as tall as myself. If you are careful with how you walk it should be usable.

      I have a video comparing the 18-105mm to another lens and camera combo - the Fujifilm X-S10 + XF 18-55mm. Basically it's Sony OSS vs Fuji IBIS+OIS. I realize it's not a comparison to the Tamron 17-70mm but it demonstrates how the Sony 18-105 OSS can hold its own (to some degree).

    Thank you for this post. Very informative and helpful (and also engaging and entertaining).
    Quite interesting to see this "wobble effect" with the Tamron 17-70mm lens. I have seen this before as well on the a6400 and the 16-50mm kit lens. For the life of me, I'm not sure what I did to fix this wobble effect issue. It could have been a firmware update or a setting I've changed. I also do not recall experiencing this issue with other Sony lenses - 18-105mm, 10-18mm, and the 28-70mm full frame kit lens.
    I considered getting the 17-70 for its wider aperture but I may stick with the 18-105.

    I got sigma 16mm f1.4 and close focusing is very useful. Sony or full frame versions are mostly unable to do that. Major difference compared to Sony's 16-55 besides that is focusing speed, deciding would be based on those 2 points. There is one up for Sony though, if you own super wide or prime with close focus at 16mm, it's easily better to buy Sony, since you are covered for that situation.

      I right now am running the Sigma trio, and the lack of quick access to other focal ranges on type of content i do makes me really interested in move into this 17-70, or a 24-70 from sigma, but honestly, the bigger range and cheapest price for 17-70 is way more interesting

    Would this work well to record drum videos ? My Sony a6100 with stock lens makes the drum sticks look like noodles. How can I fix this ?

    Wich option is good if i'm using apsc but i want to buy something that could work on a eventual future full frame camera? i'm thinking on sigma 24,28-70 or tamrom 28-75

    Great review! Can I ask if I can get “cinematic “ feel out of the A6400 without post correction? Reason being I am attracted also to Fuji’s film simulation modes for movie. But in all otter aspects the Sony is way better, so I am not sure which one to buy - any thoughts?

      I have an a6400 and I'd suggest you youtube a6400 cinematic, it'll show you how to setup a picture profile. Ultimately, I'd shot in s-log/raw and color correct - would be fun to learn

    Using this tamron for few days, love the flexiblity and sharpness, the only issue that im unhappy with this lens is that it gives A LOT of aberration and ugly bokeh at f/2.8, mosty I use f/4 or above on this lens, cause anything below often needs a lot of post process to repair photo. On other hand it's only 800$ so it can't be perfect :D

    The flaring is good to know about, as I was wondering if this is usable for infrared photography on my Fuji. I think I'll wait for this to be available to rent so I can test it before I buy.
    But seeing as how I'm all stills, this could still be good for my visible-light X-T3 for general purpose and macro!
    Great review!

    The only other lens that competes with this Tamron lens is the Sony 16-55mm G lens but that sucker is $1,300 bucks on Amazon right now! Plus it doesn't have any kind of stabilization feature. Crispy sharp imagines but that's only if your hands never move... Unless you have the a6600 with IBIS. But with IBIS and this Tamron lens that has internal stabilization feature... For $800 on Amazon? Definitely would choose Tamron for now.
