    I think you made a great choice Terry! I started a business with a 24-105mm lens almost a decade ago. As much as I love fast primes, time is money - being able to walk into a client shoot and quickly capture wide / mid / tele shots on the fly as things are happening is what gets the shot most of the time.

    I love my 85 1.8 and will keep it forever for portraits, but a 2.8 zoom more than fits my needs (just got the Tamron 28-75), though I do want to get a wider prime for landscape to play with.

    I got some cheap g1 zooms but I shoot prime tamron 35mm 1.8 and nifty 50. Im kinda thinking of getting the 70-200 2.8 then later a 15-30mm 2.8. It's really confusing cause there are so many ways to go with it I just wanna be well covered. I might just stay prime and grab a 85mm.

  • @justinmcq78

    I can appreciate this. I have the sigma 24-70 2.8 art, the tamron 70-180 2.8 and a tokina 85 1.8 and I had been racking my brain trying to decide if 2.8 was good enough for portraiture in a street setting and if so which one to use.

    You made the right call. Standard zoom lenses are the most practical option for run-and-gun work. I love my Canon 17-55mm f/2.8 and my Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8.

  • @jakeyulo8738
    @jakeyulo8738 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Still here! I just did a similar trade, 135mm 1.8 GM for the 24-70 straight up. So far no regrets, it's more practical and less stressful using zooms for paid work but I still prefer primes for personal use.

  • @PointShiftDrive

    I just got the sony 24/70 2.8... I am impressed. I also have the 16/35 but this seems to be more what I need. I am happy but I do wish the zoom didnt barrel outward. makes it challenging on a gimbal for balancing purposes but still worth it. also, if they do make a mark2, I also will upgrade

      I think it deoends if you run n gun or not. If you do somethig with group of people who are all rushing zoom is better to have much more shots and save time than carefully changing lenses. Primes are fine in studio where you have to of time, tried as nice workflow as with zoom

    With purchasing any camera gear, you first need to decide what you need the camera gear for, as far as what content you specifically create. And then obtain the gear for that particular NEED. Big difference between wants and needs. You made the right choice for your needs, the convenience of the zoom fits your needs better like you said "you're tired of the constant lens change

    • @LimitlessLivingOver60
      @LimitlessLivingOver60 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Rosie Carr I use both, but prefer the 20mm when I can use it. It's just so sharp and lightweight. Much easier to carry. Since then I added the 14mm prime, which is a lot of fun!

    Amazing video, this is exactly what I was looking for. I'm trying to decide if I want to get the 24mm 1.4, or the 35mm 1.4 to pair with my 50mm 1.2 but the other option is this 24-70 to do it all. low light performance is super important for my hiking and backpacking videos, I'm so torn.

    As long as you are happy that’s all that matters. Very good trade. I started with the 24-70 and 70-200 f2.8’s and now I am mostly all primes, but hey that’s me. I have been thinking about the 24mm f1.4 gm but I don’t know how much I will use it seeing I do more portraits of seniors, and couples than I do weddings. So I am on the fence on getting the 24mm.

    The 24mm 1.4 fits my needs better than a 24-70. The weight and the 1.4 for astrophotography are perfect for backpacking and hiking. Curious what you think would be better for street photography, though. 24-70, 35mm, or the 50 1.2. One of these will be my next investment.

    If I can have only one lens, it is 24-70 f2.8. But if I can but couple lenses, I definitely go primes. My opinion, people believes primes are harder to shoot with, but when you zooming, you should understand what are you doing. It's not about distance, it's different perspective. It's harder than you think. So you should choose focal distance first and then take a shot, but people like zooming in and out and just trying take some shots, without stepping back and forward.

    #stillhere question I am debating between 24mm GM and Sigma 24-70. I do shoot a lot at night so leaning towards the 24mm f1.4. But the versatility of the 24-70 has me second guessing. But I do have a 50mm f1.4 prime and a 70-200 f2.8. Do you think the 24-70 would be enough of a benefit to pass on the 24mm prime?

    Sigma 24-70/2.8 user here. I absolutely adore this lens and have put killer images through it. Would I prefer the native Sony? Absolutely. But I feel the Sigma has come really close, and no way I can justify the cost difference. However, I still am considering the 24/1.4 GM because that lens can do everything. It's the one lens you can slap on your camera on the way out the door, and just KNOW whatever you choose to shoot that day, it will be crisp and beautiful with the gorgeous bokeh. I also have found that (for me) primes FORCE you into being a more intelligent, creative photographer. Damn it -- I just talked myself into it. I'm gonna find a good used version of that lens!

    Yo yo Terry really liked your opinion piece on the lens swap. My rap on the deal is if you have a Sony A7m3 for video the Sony and sigma lenses are probably best because of the crop factor @ 30p. But, the tamron zooms are definitely much more walk around friendly and for 2nd cam work it's great. Cj

    You nailed it down, it depends on your needs. One size doesn't fit all. I wanted the 24GM first and then decided to get the 24-70GM. Never regreted it because it has a way wider flexibility of use. That said your decision makes perfectly sense.

    I was sad for you to lose your 24GM prime. I love mine and I also love my Tamron 28-75 f2.8.

    Bruh, I feel ya'! I picked up the Sony 24-70mm G ('Gangsta' Mode) for a steal at Lens Authority. This lens is razor sharp wide open. Amazing! No regrets, and I gave up a few primes to get it!

      Good to hear you're enjoying the 24-70, and that it's razor sharp! Deciding on the 24-70 vs a 50 and 24.

    #still here! Ugh, the age old trade off between primes and zooms. It's awesome to see their quality getting closer, now if they could just solve the size problem. For me, the size is a real drawback. It's such a hassle to carry around all day. #fam

    Still here. At the moment I use the tamron 28-75 2.8, and a couple of primes 14mm 2.8 and 85 1.4. I will say that since I only have one camera, its very practical to have a zoom lens. However I think that when I get another body and the 24 1.4 or the new 35 1.4, I might use more primes than the zoom. But time will tell. At the moment due to budget reasons and the practical reasons you talk about, I prefer to have a zoom on most of the time.

    Still here! I went with the Sigma 24 AND the Sigma 24-70. Sometimes I hope there isn’t a lag in quality over Sony... but overall no issues for me as a hobbyist.

      Excellent choices!! There is really no noticeable difference in them vs their Sony competitors for hobbyists.

    Ha, ha, yes the GM 24-70 is heavy but a really great lens for event photography. The 24 mm comes in handy in tight spaces.

    Looks like the mkii will be announced soon. Will you still get the mkii or do you think the mki is good enough. I have just traded my 135gm for the 70-200 gm mkii and was thinking of trading my 24gm for the 24-70gm, but now waiting to see if the mkii comes out. Would be good if they could make it internal zoom as well. #fam

    I have a bad habit of never getting rid of gear until its obsolete or of no value. The pro, once I own something I never regret not having it. The con, I sit on stuff I never use and never get any compensation for selling/trading it.

    Still here, and I do prefer primes. :) For landscapes, the beautiful colors, ultra sharpness and contrast of the 24mm GM are fantastic, and for street, the smaller lighter size of the 24 wins.

  • @patchharvey7892

    Same. I LOVE primes but the 24-70 GM is on my camera 90% of the time because it does everything

  • @shadda
    @shadda ปีที่แล้ว +1

    As much as I love my primes, 99% of the time I just keep my sigma 24-70 and tamron 70-180 in my backpack. They're both ridiculously sharp, great contrast/resolution and for the vast majority of what I do f2.8 is more than enough. If I could go back to when I started my lens collection, I'd have held off buying the primes (I was led to believe that primes are always going to be better than zooms) A 24-70 is an absolute workhorse of a lens.

    Still here.
    I like both prime and zoom lenses; it depends on the situation. If I'm travelling and I bring only one lens, it'll probably be a zoom lens. In some cases I might dual wield two camera bodies each with their own prime, with a zoom lens to maybe use as a backup in case one body breaks.

  • @nhwine

    #FAM - I prefer primes when I can but the Sigma 14-24 DGDN F2.8 and Sony 24-105 F4 are my go-to travel lenses.

    Hi Terry. I shot amovie, avtually, with the SONY 28-135, and that was with the SONY fx9, and that cam is a little bit shaprper than f. ex FX6(a7s II).....do you know, if the24-70 is any shaper than 28-135 ?
