I think you made a great choice Terry! I started a business with a 24-105mm lens almost a decade ago. As much as I love fast primes, time is money - being able to walk into a client shoot and quickly capture wide / mid / tele shots on the fly as things are happening is what gets the shot most of the time.

I agree, I haven't got a zoom lens yet but when I'm on shoot and things are happening quickly I'm there faffing around with deciding what lens, swapping lens and missing epic shot opportunities

A the reason for that is the way you talk, your tone and pace, it's just pleasant to listen. And of course the picture quality. You rock man! If I can have only one lens, it is 24-70 f2.8. But if I can but couple lenses, I definitely go primes. My opinion, people believes primes are harder to shoot with, but when you zooming, you should understand what are you doing. It's not about distance, it's different perspective. It's harder than you think. So you should choose focal distance first and then take a shot, but people like zooming in and out and just trying take some shots, without stepping back and forward.

I’ve been shooting with the 24-70 GM since it came out, and love it. Yes the primes are awesome...I just bought the 20mm f1.8 G lens and love it. But for walking around I always go for the 24-70.

I have the Sigma 24 -70, and I’m highly considering the 20 mm. in your opinion does the 20mm make a huge difference compared to 24mm?

    • @LimitlessLivingOver60
      @LimitlessLivingOver60 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@Rosie Carr I use both, but prefer the 20mm when I can use it. It's just so sharp and lightweight. Much easier to carry. Since then I added the 14mm prime, which is a lot of fun!

You know this is a heavy-ass lens when I purchased the 16-35 GM lens and I thought it was "light". I do love my 24-70, wish it was lighter but sometimes it's just the lens I need.

As long as you are happy that’s all that matters. Very good trade. I started with the 24-70 and 70-200 f2.8’s and now I am mostly all primes, but hey that’s me. I have been thinking about the 24mm f1.4 gm but I don’t know how much I will use it seeing I do more portraits of seniors, and couples than I do weddings. So I am on the fence on getting the 24mm.

With purchasing any camera gear, you first need to decide what you need the camera gear for, as far as what content you specifically create. And then obtain the gear for that particular NEED. Big difference between wants and needs. You made the right choice for your needs, the convenience of the zoom fits your needs better like you said "you're tired of the constant lens change

As much as I love my primes, 99% of the time I just keep my sigma 24-70 and tamron 70-180 in my backpack. They're both ridiculously sharp, great contrast/resolution and for the vast majority of what I do f2.8 is more than enough. If I could go back to when I started my lens collection, I'd have held off buying the primes (I was led to believe that primes are always going to be better than zooms) A 24-70 is an absolute workhorse of a lens.

However I think that when I get another body and the 24 1.4 or the new 35 1.4, I might use more primes than the zoom. But time will tell. You have my absolute agreement, and I'm more photo than video; video is why a lot of Sony users get the 24mm. It's ungodly good. The colors, and just general image quality are HARD to compare to, it's t*ts. But the Sony 24-70 2.8 is STOOPID good for nailing as much versatility as possible. Not too mention that f/1.4 is too shallow for a LOT of applications. But mostly I dig your delivery, straight up and humble. Props.

Still here. I bought the 24 GM after your review and many others that I had watched..but I still think it is big.
However I wouldn't buy that heavy GM zoom lens if it were just $500 dollars because it's way too heavy for me.
So anyway, recently I was looking for an 85mm but I just blew most of it on a new stroller from Canada, the Dogger, for my older fur girl and I was on Shutterfly ordering things.. They get me every time, lol.
With what's left of my stimulus I may just go for a budget 85 lens.

As much as I love a prime - if I could only have 1 lens it would be a 24-70; and by the way - the Sigma 24-70 DG DN Art for Sony is amazing; some days you only want to take 1 lens with you and on those days - the extra weight is offset by what you are not carrying in your bag!

Bruh I have the 16-35 GM on my a7siii and I always find myself wanting the extra reach. One of the 24-70's will be bought.

That’s why I went for the 24-70. I always wanted that 16-35 but was worried about the reach

For photo I depend on the extra reach of the 24-105. I can't give it up for a 24-70 even for the advantages of the GM (having never experienced the quality of the 24-70 myself). If I ran two bodies, there are a lot more options. I'm run and gun in the mountains so I can live with f4.

@@TerryWarfield I have the 24 - 70 GM and gave up the 24 - 105 because I checked the last 3 years of photos in Lightroom and saw I only have 15 percent of shots over 70 - 105 and my family noticed the images were better on the GM without me telling them that it was a different lens. Love the 24 - 105 for years but the GM is fantastic.

Yes the 2470 is heavy BUT 2.8 from 24 to 70! From all reviews of the 24 1.4 Astro MW users use at 2 or 2.8 any way!!! BUT BUT ALSO "IF" you do night shots that need faster shots to stop movement a 1.4 or 1.8 is nice to have. This lens is so sharp the entire range you can pixel peep 300x sand on a beach and get lost counting the grains of sharp in focus sand around a subject 12 ft away at 5.6.

for wide lens...i dont really care , zoom lens is good enough...but for long focal lens especially portrait, prime lens definitely a better choice. I am having Tamron 35-150mm 2.0-2.8. the sharpness cannot compare to my 85mm 1.8 at the same focal lens

if you're gonna do primes for anything remotely run&gun, you need at least 2 camera bodies.
if you've got the R3 or R4, you can hit the crop mode button for some extra reach too.

I've got the Sigma 24-70mm and I love it! That being said, down the road, I could see myself getting a 24mm 1.4 for specific uses like gimbal work as it's just a lighter setup.

I love my 85 1.8 and will keep it forever for portraits, but a 2.8 zoom more than fits my needs (just got the Tamron 28-75), though I do want to get a wider prime for landscape to play with.

Amazing video, this is exactly what I was looking for. I'm trying to decide if I want to get the 24mm 1.4, or the 35mm 1.4 to pair with my 50mm 1.2 but the other option is this 24-70 to do it all. low light performance is super important for my hiking and backpacking videos, I'm so torn.

I like both prime and zoom lenses; it depends on the situation. If I'm travelling and I bring only one lens, it'll probably be a zoom lens. In some cases I might dual wield two camera bodies each with their own prime, with a zoom lens to maybe use as a backup in case one body breaks.

Looks like the mkii will be announced soon. Will you still get the mkii or do you think the mki is good enough. I have just traded my 135gm for the 70-200 gm mkii and was thinking of trading my 24gm for the 24-70gm, but now waiting to see if the mkii comes out. Would be good if they could make it internal zoom as well. #fam

Hi Terri, thanks so much for this video. Not only is it answering a lot of my questions, but it's causing more turmoil about which one of these lenses to get! You do a lot of shooting in all sorts of situations. I think you'd know exactly what to do if you owned both of these lenses. My deal is indoor only, with lighting that will hopefully be something like you have in your studio where you shot your "BIG MISTAKE?? SONY 24-70mm F2.8 over SONY 24mm F1.4??" video. I'm going to make drum lesson videos. My front camera will be an alpha 7S iii. Which of these two lenses, if you owned both, would you prefer to use to shoot from the same height, same angle, same composition, day-in and day-out? The camera will never be moved, and taken somewhere else.

    #FAM
Just had to go back to this video and say that I sold my 24 GM lens for the 16-35 2.8. Because the more I shoot, the more I realize that I prefer doing a run & gun type of style. Just being able to go handheld then to snap my camera into my gimbal without needing to change lens or rebalance my gimbal has been a game changer for me. I have also understood through out my experience that you don't always have to shoot at 1.4 for videos. I found myself needing to shoot at or above 2.8 anyways to get more details in focus.
Im starting to believe that 1.4's are great for photos, but not necessary for videos... UNLESS! You need extra light in darker scenarios.
Anyways, I felt like sharing that since you had to part ways with your 24 GM lens. I had the option to keep my 24 and have the 16-35 GM. But I felt like it was weird to have that focal length twice in my line up of lenses.

Yo yo Terry really liked your opinion piece on the lens swap. My rap on the deal is if you have a Sony A7m3 for video the Sony and sigma lenses are probably best because of the crop factor @ 30p. But, the tamron zooms are definitely much more walk around friendly and for 2nd cam work it's great. Cj
