So as you all know I am a secretly a Volkswagen scene girl since day one.. so I couldn't wait to get my hands on Volkswagen's latest iteration of the Golf R.. this time there is no manual box and only available in sensible 4 door.
I was not surprised at how well this car drives, but its user experience wasn't what I expected from this monster of a hatchback..

My mate has had his Mk8 Golf for about 5 months now and he still can’t get used to the lack of buttons or interface plus it’s been back to VW three times with tech issues
Couldn’t agree more about the interior, Becky! The lack of physical buttons and the time your eyes are off the road whilst trying to get to something is unforgivable. VW must change this.
I'd like to take that 42,000 £ For maybe a Fake Taxi Or a Undercover Lift ,Doggging Behind a Hedge 🤣😂 it's Quick Enough for an Speedy Escape
This was a super boring review. Didn’t cover anything I haven’t watched 20 times already. Talking about the power and the buttons. Give us something real in the content. Like how would you spend your money compared to the type r or amg45. Or maybe get the S3 or the RS3 which is this car with real buttons.

To be honest its ridicolusly expensive. For that kind of cashflow you can get the BMW M2 Competition. Wen i ordered the GTI Clubsport back in late 2016 it was basically half the price, and it STILL have the same engine & is38 turbo. Plus it looked better... Dont get me wrong R will always be the king of hatchbacks. The question is if you feel its worth it or not... In my case i would wait for the MK9 & see, as im definetly not in any rush... 👍
First time Ive seen one of Becky's videos. Very good. Well presented no nonsense, no filler, no pointless info or self promotion. Just good honest, simple informed comentary. Look forward to watching more. Very impressed. Totally agree about the new Mk8 too. Just not quite as user friendly as Mk7 ...
My 2016 Golf R has much less complexity and is user-friendly in a more traditional way. It also has a feature no longer available - a proper six-speed manual transmission. Stock HP is 292 which came up a little short for me but, fortunately, a viable option existed which I took full advantage of. The dealer where I purchased the car has a tuner shop. I took full advantage of that convenient availability to add an APR Stage 1, then an APR Stage 2. I didn't even know APR and other tuning options existed when I bought the car in late 2015. Five + years and 55,000 miles later, I am driving a nearly 400 HP hot hatch and am pinching myself every time I drive it. I don't need a DSG to have a seriously fast car that is reliable and a blast to drive.
Yes I think it a shame every thing seem to be going automatic I thing it takes away from the driving experience

Always loved Golfs! Had a mk1 gti, mk2 16v, mk 3 vr6 high line and currently a mk7.5 tcr gti!

Climate control is really easy to adjust, just tap the screen in the bottom left corner and it all comes up- really easy to do. Radio volume best adjusted from the control on the steering wheel 👍🏼

Is anyone else thinking that those alloys are looking cheap, and don't suit the car? (i just don't like the design) In my opinion they could have done better
Absolutely.....they don't suit a hot hatch at all.
They look like beyblades to me... It would look so much better with Pretorias.
VW wants to sell the upgrade rims for 3k.

Love the honesty, I also appreciate a good button so this would drive me from A to insane in about 22 seconds.
Got the R Line. Initial irritation with buttons & heated steering wheel, and the Infotainment software was extremely buggy. But a few months on and it’s the best daily purchase ever. Everything’s automatic so once set, you really don’t need to touch. Perseverance and you’ll love it - even the little ‘knob’.

I did spec one up on the VW configurator, with leather, DCC and Akrapovic (and a couple of other bits) I was at £49,000! It’s a lot of car but that’s a lot of money for a Golf. Still tempted though 😂
Nice review. I agree the cabin controls seem too complicated. Driving a car should not that complex. The R’s are great and I like the colour of the car you’ve reviewed. 👍
idk about this mk8, sure Golf Rs were always subtle and surely it's a riot to drive but ... only automatic, three boring colors, heck even it's "face" looks bored ... personally if I had a budget for this car, I'd look for a manual mk7 preferrably in red, then spend the difference on wheels and tires
But you dont have the budget. And dont own an mk8 in manual so you wouldnt know. Better than mk7
Yea I wanted buttons on my mobile phone in 2008... annnnd I’ve had smartphones ever since.
Volkswizard shows how to put key buttons as a shortcut on the favourites page for quick and easy access.

Looks to me there's been a downgrade in build quality from the MK7, seems like a lot of cost cutting measures were used.
Glad to see more proper reviews! Real thoughts not force feed media BS go girl! With you on the looks, bit bland but ok interior decent but a little ott and looks fiddly however it looks like a rocket ship and I’m hearing good things! Great video B 🙌

I also agree that Mk8R is a capable beast, but the digital nonsense will never allow me to trade my Mk6R for it.
Need my analog clocks, my manual gearbox, analog parking brake, and my easy to use knobs and switches.
You should def invest in a extern mic, that also absorbs the wind. That will really boost up the quality of your vids.
Tried a mk7 R when I was looking to replace my mk1 A5. The R was fast as you ever want but it just felt like a golf, had no sense of occasion about it, it was just fast. Ended up with the new A5 which is still decently quick.

I picked up my '19 reg new for £33k and have only done 4,500 miles in it, I couldn't believe the hike in price for the Mk8, I think I'll be keeping mine indefinitely as I refuse to pay such a big price difference!
Totally agree about the lack of physical buttons, if 42k, what are the extra's? Lapiz blue is an extra, but what else?
Have a 7.5 golf r so maybe wait to see how 8.5 is?
I'm liking it looks alot better than the new seat leon, the touch buttons would take some time getting used to i must admit... and I know exactly what you mean about touching the steering wheel controls as I do it now in my leon mk2 fr, but for 40k not a chance.

I like the sleeper elements of it like my current mark 7 but the power, they lied but lied in the right direction. Hate the seats the leather looks more premium but a lot of extra money
Would love one for my wife. Bought her a GTI and its brilliant, compliments her MK2 syncro country perfectly.
I'm with you on the buttons, these manufactures have started making thing needlessly complicated just for the sake of it... and how can it be more expensive than a S3 with that shit interior ?
Having no buttons would really put me off the golf (and I'm sure a lot of 'older' drivers). S3 all day long.
@Ryan St The Golf R is better now in the Mk8 when it comes to performance, before it was the same, I've driven the 7 and the 7.5 and own the S3 face lift and the performance is no different really. I just think with the Mk8 they have made a really great drivers car, but have failed by putting a cheap arse interior in a 40k car.
@Ryan St That would of been hard going from a F80 to a X3, I need to sell my S3 to get something with towing capacity and I'm not looking forward to it lol

Also "...as you all know I am a secretly a Volkswagen scene girl" What kind of a secret is that? ;-) I thoroughly enjoyed this real world review and couldn't agree more about the buttons. I think it was a big mistake to take them out for those essential functions - volume, heated seats, heater controls. Plus, so many touch screen steps to change driving modes - who wants to do that when you are concentrating on the road? I would also have one in a heartbeat if it wasn't for the driver interface. Confession, I am a "grown up boy racer". Great review.

They really have the gearing and gear shift speeds nailed in these new golfs. That seems to be where the performance is coming from. I have an old Saab 9000 Aero 2.3T which is tuned to 360bhp and 465NM. Which in itself is a monster of a car @1200kg and a 70 to 100 of just 3.5 seconds. However had a head to head with a new Golf R 2 weeks ago and to 70 its like a rocket honestly. It wasted my tuned Saab.
I think VW finally nailed the looks on the Mk8 with the new Golf R
And the performance is outstanding!

Can hear how fast it’s getting up through the Rev range there. Does seem pretty savage! All the stuff you mentioned though is spot on. Price is the biggest killer - the mk7 was one of the cars that brought serious performance to the masses. As somebody said, everyone on the internet had one including me, lease deals were cheap as chips and £30k starting price, you didn’t need any options. £42k is crackers, to me with inflation, it should be about £35k now but suppose if that’s what the can sell them for .... now out of range of most though.
plus 8k miles 12 months 32k ...no rush
I think it was a very honest and sincere review.
Love the understated look but like you there are too many doors Also with you with the interface stuff but solution is Find the R set up and forget the rest Just keep that right foot planted and have fun!

I now own a 2010 polo GTI ... it’s 1.4 supercharged and turboed with 7 speed dsg as standard... so much fun as confused as it is 🤓❤️
Have you had any problems with it? I’ve heard they are really unreliable
Mine has a 132K on it and yes it’s not perfect. Maintenance is definitely the key. Consider how many of these are out their in the world and I think percentage wise not a lot of problems and not so bad.
I have to admit as a big Vw head Vw don’t make them like they used too after the mk5 Vw wasn’t great by the sounds of it. The 90s ones are my favourite Corrado would be my dream car

I agree 100% This should be the Shmee edition R :) Price is mad, 4 fours bleh, no manual/stick. Ive been a huge VW fan for years but this is the beginning of the end for me.

The enfotainment system is fine. You just gotta get used to it. You can make shortcuts and everything. I have that car but I have the Performance pack and she dynos at 350BHP!!!!!
Golf 7 has the best body design ever.

@@alpicosito621 I’ve seen 110.7mph just from one run, I reckon it can achieve up to 111-113mph based on what I’ve seen on the street, but that is just speculation.
Reason being is that you can’t really say much about one run, As consistent as that car is.
Anything can change the speeds, but the 100-200kph run is done in 10.7 seconds so that’s plenty fast for stock already.

I used to have a mk7 gti dsg with a jb4 and I was pretty impressed with the cars I was beating and what times and numbers it put down.
I have no doubt a stock R would walk it though, especially on the top end.
Power to weight is one thing, but the gearing and other factors show that there is more to it than just that.
I like what they've done, only I'm not sure on the V12 interior sound vibe I'm getting....
I would definitely go for the new Golf R. However, I am concerned about the haptic feedback buttons all over the interior of the car. Activating something accidentally is never good.
However, just like everything else, I'm sure I/many will get use to it if they love the car enough.
Like you, I prefer the 3-door over the 5-door. I currently own a 2008 VW GTI and it's a 3-door.
My next car, if I have the funds, will probably go into a new Golf R. It's the right level up, at least, for me.
Do you have another car you can recommend if not the Golf R?

Volkswagen is missing a trick on doing the top model Golf with a wide body or wide arches, I am thinking Integrale style, Rally/Motorsport etc. The top models of Golf are okay, but they are rather too understated and subtle. The styling could be turned up, and I would love to see wide body / wide arch etc. Keep up the good work :)

I have a general question..........I've been fortunate enough to have owned all brand new cars the last 20yrs. However, last year like many I found myself having to part with my beautiful RS3 saloon.....I noticed you now own a gorgeous older Porsche. My question is..........you have access to alot of supercars etc for your channel content. However, how does that compare to owning your own dream car??? I'll never afford a new Porsche but your channel content has got my wondering whether a second gt4 is worth the saving and investment??? Great work with the channel and content.

It is unfortunate that the EU gets shafted from being able to purchase it in a MT set up...unlike NA. 😅 Other than that - I am very excited to purchase one in black with the manual gearbox.

A cool car, but yeah, simple buttons for climate control, volume and heated steering wheel and seats are nice to have. I have a car where you have to go into a screen for heated/cooled seats and steering wheel. Don't care for that. Does sound like it's a blast to drive on twisty roads though.

It always amazes me how narrow these roads are in the UK. It's almost like they want people to crash.

Like most people on here I’ve watched numerous reviews on the new Golf R. I like it very much but my 2 issues lie with the poor choice of alloy wheels you can spec from new and if I was to buy one I’d defo want it in metallic black with black leather. The seats look great but I want black leather. And I can’t. 🙁
If I’m spending £39k+ on a car you don’t really want people being able to confuse it for a regular £20k car but that’s just me
I think the GTi clubsport model looks more expensive than this R 🤔
You absolutely need to add the performance pack for body styling alone. Not to mention the bonus drift mode

Oh idk, I like to drive a wolf in sheep's clothing rather than a blingy 'look at me' car. I would love people to confuse it for a lesser model as it's much more fun pulling off from lights etc and seeing the boy racers in my rear view mirror as they wonder what just happened.

Idk if it's just me but Golf Rs are no longer impressive.
They're cool cars but soo many ppl drive them on finance with a pop & bang map they just got boring.
I'm not so sure there is such a thing as "matt chrome". I would describe it as brushed aluminium myself. I'm definitely with you with the lack of actual buttons thing though.....that would so boil my piss having to scroll through a menu just to find the heated rear screen.
It's not for me, it looks externally too much like an audi (yes I know they're the same company), totally agree the blue accents on the seats just don't look right. The lack of buttons, I totally get that. The R badge on the rear not for me, I'd even go as far to say I don't like the wheels. The performance stats sound impressive and should it drive like the mk5 r32 but fresher than should be an amazing drive. But just not a car that I'd buy then look back at when I'm walking away when I lock it after driving anywhere.
We in the USA get a manual option!!! :D :D :D

The new Mark 8 for me looks like a new Toyota Corolla hatchback. Don't get me wrong it looks nice but its just not really looking like a Golf R.
I still prefer my Mark 7.5.

Looks very much like a stock Golf in a special colour. Don't get me wrong, its all about the drive of which sounds like fun, but at £40k plus for a hot hatch with no shouty bits or buttons, i think their market share will fall.

I was at the side of a junction at some traffic lights the other week it was dusk and there was this new MK8 Golf that look like an R and when I did get behind it it was the GTD......🤔 from certain angles you can't tell if its the flagship R from the GTD
