  • We diagnose our cheap project Touareg. When we purchased this 4.2L V8, it had timing faults and misfires. From our experience, we went into this with the expectation that it had a bad cam timing chain adjuster on bank 1. In this video, we cover the complete diagnostic process for a bad cam chain adjuster for a V8 Touareg. Follow along while we show you that process and find out some bad news at the end!

    Good Vid. As a former Audi/VW tech myself, my two cents..., I would have heavily leaned towards bent valves myself without even swapping coils BEFORE any engine teardown..... As a another person commented, with the cams out, a leak down check regardless of piston position would have told you everything you needed to know. Even without a leak down gauge set, could have just jamed a rag and air nozzle into the open spark plug hole and heard the air rushing into the intake manifold and likely out the exhaust too through one or more overlapped open valves on other cylinders. Also, just to remember old school basics, a 12 dollar vacuum gauge hooked to any straight intake vacuum source would have 99% confirmed bent valves as with two dead holes, you would have had severe intake vacuum fluctuation. Your vacuum gauge needle would have been jumping like a jack hammer.
    Anywho, a few other quick easy checks that are irrelevent really. Again, just my 2 cents. My approach would have had zero content toward an informative video useful to many folks out there....LOL, my video would have just been me in front of a camera for 15 seonds sayin, "My four toooo's T-Rex nedds a top end rebuild, hope she didn't pop her cookies out the bottom too. Son of a diddly!!!"

    Btw, on engines with hydraulic lifters, if the valves get damaged, the lifters will sink a bit. So the cam lobes no longer touch the lifters on the affected valves. You can see light between the lifter and the cam. This is almost 100% always the case and can tell you right away what you're dealing with.

    They bought it primarily so that they could build some cool content and that later they can use if for towing or smth.
    I would pay for the footage of it being driven like they drive mk7. Once it's built, put a trailer on it with mk7 in it and drive it on some hill with the pedal to the floor so that we can see what it was really built for :)

      My GTI is doing well! Pretty solid I’d say I haven’t had any major issues or really at all for that matter and I’m at 70k miles now. I’ve changed the oil every 5-6k miles and trans every 30k. I did have one issue where I over filled the gas tank and it flooded the charcoal canister but that wasn’t too bad to repair. Upgrading the brake and rotors this weekend. Want to do more but I’m still under warranty for another 20k miles or so 😅
      How is your golf James?

    • @jamesmedina2062
      @jamesmedina2062 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Michael Hey. Will you just go stock on the brakes? I am a believer in Pagid German brake pads and Motul brake fluid. I owned 3 Passats all in a row, two with VR6 motors and last with 1.8t, the last one I got it new in 2000 and sold it 2014 or so. I tried to get out of my Passat and into GTI in 2008 but I could not go up in payments and was upset my Passat had lost almost all its value. It was crazy and I really REALLY wanted that GTI. Then I tried two years ago but was unlucky in buying one year used one and I tried to buy a Golf Diesel TDI but another customer beat me out. So I took a step down in comfort and the power department & drive a new Civic now, unfortunately not the Type R. So, I still wish I had my GTI. A friend of mine owns a VW dealership so if I really wanted one I reckon i could do it. But, I keep asking people like you because of service experience, carbon build-up(intake), and depreciation after 5-6 years.🤔

    • @jamesmedina2062
      @jamesmedina2062 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Michael My buddy loves his Tacoma and another friend of mine his Titan. Whenever I ride in the former's Tacoma I dislike the ride in town while I like his dad's Tundra. The prices between the two are not that different. If I got a truck I would probably buy used just for the occasional utility.

      You're wrong 100%. The V6 30 valve and the V8 in this video are actually VERY reliable engines. Those plastic chain guides are common failure on many engines from different manufacturers, plastic gets hard and brittle with time and heat cycles. The previous owner of that Tuareg kept driving the car without the guides, you can't expect engine to last very long under those conditions.

BTW I have noticed that my engine is opposite, passenger side is bank two and driver is bank one because my number one is driver side, all of the marks lined up there, all four cams, the mark on the crank pulley, the previous mechanic marks from previous timing belt changes, the cam lock bar and the cylinder is at TDC on that side as well per old style screwdriver measure, can't get to the crank lock pin but this is the second Touareg that is set up that way, I have another one and previously replaced the timing belt and foot pads on that one two.

    I’ve got a V8 Touareg with 147,000 on the clock ..... You have me spooked! What miles did the Cam adjuster go Kaput?
    Should I have mine replacement? If so at mileage in your opinion? My V8 has been maintained with all schedule maintenance on time 🤷‍♂️

      Bryan Mauroner they are fine for very long miles if you consistently change your oil and use good quality oil. I had a GTI with over 209K miles with the original chain and tensioner. Never had a problem with it and I was putting 25psi of boost through it and driving it like I stole it every time I got in it.

    With the cams removed, a leak down test with a breaker bar to hold the crank pulley would have taken five minutes and shown that cylinders 1 and 4 had bent valves. A six-hour gamble like that would not fly in the professional auto repair industry, but I suppose it serves as a good example of a $100 tool like a leak-down gauge being worth its weight in gold.

    • @LynxStarAuto
      @LynxStarAuto 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly? A simple compression test of 0 is the red flag: stop immediately! There are bent valves. Just by the laws of probability. Get on the horn with the customer, take it from there.
      I would have done a relative compression test with a scope. 5 minutes I know there are bent valves, and which cylinders.

    I had an early Passat - maybe 98 or 99. Within the first year of owning it, a piece of plastic on the turbocharger broke and destroyed the engine. Took 8+ weeks to get a new engine from Germany which was replaced under warranty. Haven't owned a VW since. Its a shame, I really like VWs. I'm thinking of buying a newer Audi but I'm nervous. Not sure why VW thinks its ok to use cheap plastic in critical applications.

    The previous owner neglected the repair and now that side of the engine needs a head. The BMW V8 from the late 90's and well into the 2000's suffer from the same problem. You simply can't ignore the diesel-like clat the engine makes when the timing chain guides fail.

    yeah that sucks no compression. why didn´t you use a scope camera to look inside the cylinder maybe to see if there is any hit mark on the pinston head?
    i ran in a similar issue like that on my car audi a4 quattro 2.8, but my car was acting a bit weird. first it had a long long i mean long crankig before it wanted to start, once it started runs a couple minutes rough, and i shutted down and start up again and starts easy and no rough or missfiring. but if the car seats for a couple hours acted like the beginning long long crank to start up.
    long story short it happened to be the hydraulic valve lifters they weren´t holding up any oil they ran empty after the car was seat for a while. i used 1quart of marvel mystery oil and ¨voila¨ the long long long cranking was getting to less long long and then long and now my car just start normal with no long crank. i ran the mystery oil for 200 miles and i changed the oil.
    at the beginning i made a compression test and i had no compressin on my cylinder 1, 3, 5 the 2, 4 and 6 were ok, that´s the reason my car when it started after the long crank was idling rough until the hydraulic lifters filled up with oil and then the 1 3 5 cylinder started to contribute to engine making the idling normal.
    well anyway just wanted to share my experience on my car sniff sniff hope it helps someone.
    BUT the most important is that we´ll be able to see more work on this touareg yeah,

    Seems pretty clear to me that the previous owner didn't maintain the engine properly. Not changing the timing belt at the recommended 80k. But VW nowadays makes cars that they plan to last 110.000 miles or 180.000 km. That is common knowledge in Europe. It used to be more (150,000 mi/250.000 km) but times change.... I think only the Japanese construct cars for that mileage nowadays.

      Deutsche Auto Parts There are tricks you can do to prevent the crank from spinning. Taking the piston to slightly past TDC, makes it more difficult for the air to move the crankshaft. You can also do the test at BDC and the pressure will not move the crankshaft in the slightest. However, doing it at BDC could make diagnosis trickier, because at BDC more pressure tends to escape into the crankcase. Not the case here, because bent valves hold no pressure at all, but one doesn't know that originally going in.
