I lived in China for several years. About $1400 covers airfare from the states. My rent was about $400 a month and food was cheap. Alcohol was more expensive. I went as an individual so there was no package price, public transportation is so good, one can travel for next to nothing. The Chinese people are lovely, I often was given fruit and water when traveling by bus.
