    I agree a very underrated game. Was one of my favorites when I was a kid. Never realized how beautiful the cabinet was.

      All the Nintendo stuff really had a cool look to it, it has that cutesy Japanese thing going on.

      Does wimpy, sweet pea, or the pelican(i only remember the pelican from the live action movie but always wondered if it was rooted in the cartoon) ever make an appearance in the game?

    Nintendo's arcade cabinets were so well done. The artwork, the marquees, the solid joystick and buttons, the colorful design... they really made their machines stand out in the arcade.

    • @abrahamcortina6322
      @abrahamcortina6322 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Too bad they only made five arcade games from the 80s and they focused more on releasing their games through home consoles like the NES and they never make anymore arcade games until the 90s and 2000s but they're mostly racing games like Mario Kart and Cruisin' (co-produced with Midway Games)

  • @jakemusictvs

    This was one of my favourite games when I was a kid in the 1980s. We had the Atari 2600 version (we still have it but it is in storage now). I bought an arcade cocktail table that has this game included, so I play it on that now. To this day, if someone mentions Popeye, I have to tell them about this game!

    • @Big_time_949

      Man, isn't that game addictive as hell? I remember I just couldn't stop playing it at a camp I went to when I was a kid. The counselors would be like,"You're playing Popeye again?"

      Actually, the movie came out in 1980, so it predated the game. Nintendo wanted to make a Popeye game to coincide with the movie, but their games up to that point weren’t too popular, so King Features were skeptical to sell them the game rights, so Nintendo made Donkey Kong instead, which is when the story you told played out, and eventually, Nintendo got to make the game they wanted to make all along. Incidentally, the baby’s name is Swee’Pea, which I knew all along, but I had to look up whose child Swee’Pea actually is. According to the comic, Swee’Pea was abandoned on Popeye’s doorstep, but in most appearances, Olive Oyl is the one taking care of Swee’Pea, with him sometimes being her cousin or nephew, or even her adopted son. But they have never said just whose child Swee’pea is. What they do make clear, at least in the home manuals, is that Popeye’s rival in this game is Brutus rather than Bluto, and King Features has since established that Bluto and Brutus are two different characters. They made Brutus in the 60s under the assumption that Paramount, who was doing the shorts in the 50s and prior, owned the Bluto character, only to find out later that King Features themselves owned Bluto to begin with. Eventually, King Features released a comic in which Bluto and Brutus both appeared, and established that they are twin brother, with the biggest difference being that Bluto is a sailor and Brutus is just a big brawny guy, which to me makes Bluto the better rival for Popeye. Incidentally, Brutus is scared of Bluto, so Bluto is definitely not a guy you mess with.

    Very nice collection. Man, y'all should make a museum of the 80s . I loved this game . Was one of my favorites among kung fu master, donkey kong, the fast Mrs pacman, gorf, and etc,, now that I think about it. Definately, my childhood growing up in the 80s revolved heavily around the Gold Mine in Oglethorpe Mall, in Savannah, listening to Steve Perry belting out " don't stop" in the arcades background music. Good times, good times.. I'll have to hit y'all up, sometimes definitely, after I finish up my child support obligations 😂. I might have to treat myself to one of them, definitely...

    The girder theme also comes from Popeye. Not sure if it is exactly true or not but I did read that Miyamoto's favourite Popeye cartoon was the one where Popeye is trying to rescue a sleeping-walking Olive Oyl who manages to scale a building site and has many sequences involving girders.

    I originally played this game at Food City in 1983. I liked it so much that my late mother bought the Atari 2600 version for me for Christmas. But when I played the Atari 2600 Popeye, I wasn't happy. Unlike the arcade version, Bluto/Brutus doesn't run on the Atari 2600 Popeye when you grab the spinach. That sucks because half of the fun is having to chase Bluto down and knock the crap out of him. But on the 2600 Popeye, Bluto walks towards you when you grab the spinach. There's no challenge in that and that sucks.

    Little known fact! Instead of bluto in the popeye game its brutus! Brutus is a little known villain from the popeye universe who is just like bluto but nintendo still couldn't get the rights to bluto so they used brutus instead.

    • @LyonsArcade
      @LyonsArcade  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I never knew that, I looked it up and you're right. The crazy thing is, the cartoon they said it was always Brutus, and Bluto was just from the 50's. I was born in the late 70's, and always knew about "Bluto".... so maybe I heard him called that from my parents? Pretty wild.

    • @MattMcIrvin
      @MattMcIrvin 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@LyonsArcade You probably saw Bluto in the old Fleischer Studios movie cartoons, which still played a lot on Saturday morning TV in those days. He was "Brutus" in the cartoons made for TV in the 60s, because King Features thought (incorrectly, as it turned out) that they didn't own the character rights to Bluto, who had mostly been a movie character up to that point. Eventually, the comics established that Bluto and Brutus were nearly identical brothers.

I used to see this at the Strong Museum of Play in eGameRevolution. I've actually bought canned spinach...yuck...I'm just gonna eat the fresh spinach in salads. If we had one right now, after we fixed it up and made it nice we'd probably advertise it for $1299 in our store.

    Was there a combination cabinet with this game and donkey kong which had the early mario? If so I played it regularly at my dentist office as a kid! Definitely played both games regardless.

    I wonder what the story was with the hardware? It's completely different from anything else Nintendo made.

    Is that Bluto or Brutus? I seem to think the later Popeye cartoons call him Brutus (or maybe it was a separate but similar character?) The baby is named Sweet Pea and I believe he is a orphan.

    is this a widebody cabinet? or it is the same size as a donkey kong cabinet?

  • @mevb
    @mevb 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Actually in the Popeye arcade game it wasn't Bluto but another Bluto-like brute called Brutus. He was swapped out for in cartoons and comics in the 80's King Features thought for some they didn't have the rights for Bluto so they made Brutus. The difference between them is while Bluto is a huge muscular guy, Brutus is fat and has scruffier hair and beard.

    • @LyonsArcade
      @LyonsArcade  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I always thought it was Bluto but apparently they changed him to Brutus before I was even born. I don't know why I knew his name was "bluto".... when it was only Bluto in the comic strips way back before the cartoon.
