You should do a little cheap shot joke about that video if you ever do a Pac Man PCB repair vid lol "Okay now lets crack this sucker open and....." *Co-worker walks up with a chainsaw* "HEY!! I DONT THINK SO, GET OUTTA HERE!"
No damage on the lower back corners, something which affects a lot of cabinets especially of this era. The paint is in great condition and the fact that the original plastic was over that Namco Midway badge on the back is a testament to the owner of this machine. Awesome.

A roll of quarters & pitcher(s) of beer, pacman cocktail machine. NOW I know why we were such good friends with the pub owner! He did always seem to 'enjoy our company'.
Yeah it was a little different than it is now, because everything was new and was stuff that hadn't been done before. Now it's all just variations of things that have already been done.
I have one of these that I've had since 1994. Mine is original too, but it is not as beautiful that one. Mine is well used and the paint is worn where lots of people held on to the cabinet while playing. I saved it from being converted to Ms. Pac-Man and got it for $300. I added a Two-Bits daughter board that allowed it to play several versions of Pac-Man & Ms. Pac-Man, but can remove that board and pop the original ROM back in and it'll be back to original. I did re-cap the monitor several years ago, because the screen image was bending around the edges. I didn't know about the flyback transformer and did not replace it at the time. It is funny that you mention the T-molding as mine is yellow, but you can tell it is orange underneath. Fantastic showing of this amazing classic.
Here from Billy buys Brooklyn. My first video game aged 4 on an Atari 2600 (original wood panel version)too young for arcades then... hooked.. great video...never mastered the fake out delay myself then! Nice play 👌
there was a book about video games out back then in the 80s that showed board patterns and tricks to play Pac-Man. I forget what the name of the book was.
Me Pac-Man was the result of a deal midway made with a company called General Computer Corporation that was making mod kits for missile command and Pac-Man. The missile commmand mod turned it into Super Missile Attack and the Pac-Man mod kit turned it into “Crazy Otto”. Midway tried to sue them but ended up making a deal with them so the company changed their Otto character into Ms. Pac-Man. The test of the mods remained pretty much the same (different mazes, colors, walking fruits and new animated intermissions) and that’s what became Ms Pac-Man. That’s why if you take the board out of a Ms Pac-Man it’s just a Pac-Man pcb with a rom mod daughter board attached to it.
I think the first Pac-man I remember was at a sleazy dive in North Portland Oregon called the Shamrock on Interstate Ave. I own a full sized original machine now that lives in my living room. It is the first arcade machine I ever bought. That is by far the best part about being a grown up, you can have vintage arcade games for your very own. Pac-man is the greatest video game ever made and my favorite game of all time.
I think it's the best game too, it has incredible staying power, anybody enjoys playing it even 40 years later, and pretty much universal name recognition. If you say "Pac-Man" around a 5 year old, they know what you're talking about... and anybody older. It still earns money on location too, ANY location. You can put one in a modern arcade and people will play it, or even if it's a 1 off game at a restaurant people will play it. It's actually became part of culture, pretty incredible.
Really love the channel! Watching all the way from Glasgow, Scotland. I'm always curious about the electronics in these ol' timers, and love your repair sections. Keep it up lads - you're keeping me sane!
The Game was released in 1980 whiched Namco developed this game This game was licensed by Bally/Midway in October later that year this is one in the earliest Namco games since the other good games by that Japanese company
I always loved this game and still do. In Girard Ohio there were a couple restaurants at that time where they had a Pac-Man machine and used to play it quite a bit. If I was able to; I would definitely own one of these Pac-Man machines. I wonder how many originals are still floating around out of curiosity. That includes good to non-functioning. Watching these videos, especially the repair ones are getting me interested in learning how to fix one of these machines. Its basically a giant computer programmed for one specific game after seeing the insides on these videos. Cedar Point was another place I played Pac-Man. A lot of those games had very high hours and a lot of use so the monitors were not as clear but they were still playable unless the monitor was severely malfunctioning. I always imagined having these game monitors multi-purpose; meaning that instead of just having the dedicated game image; modify them so they can feed regular video signals so that actual videos like movies or TV shows can play through the monitor and audio section; just by installing a switch to change the function. :))
You definitely could send a video signal into this monitor... they have a certain type of video input but there is an adapter board that can accept like a VGA signal and send to it, so you could adapt that signal in and display about whatever you wanted on the monitor...
I always preferred playing on a "fast" machine, one in which the ghost stopped changing color for good on the 4th key instead of the 9th key. You had to remember how to adjust your patterns accordingly. This one's using the original board rotation.
It’s funny how you said not destroy or sawed in half because I saw that video called “what’s inside an arcade game” by what’s inside the TH-cam channel but still. I don’t know why they would destroy something that is a piece of history and expensive they could have just give it to somebody who always wanted it. Like seriously I would have eaten a power pellet and wakka wakka them.
Yep...Pacman is the one that took my money BITD ! Im lucky I got a real nice original machine recently in really good shape with no lock bar holes !! It's a total keeper!
Great video! This is a very nice looking PAC-MAN. And it's all original too! Also the CRT looks brilliant! I'd love to have one of these cabinets! Totally giving a like!
I always throught it was interesting that in the US throughout the 80s, Pac-Man never had a set design for artwork, marketing, and merchandise. Different companies and artists with the Pac-Man liscense had their own interpretations of their character, like how he has big red eyes on this. I say in the US, because for all artwork and merchandise in Japan, Pac-Man had a consistent design (a smiling yellow ball with red boots and orange mittens) that would go on to appear in later games, like Pac-Land and the Pac-Man World trilogy.
Joe's Classic Video Games Yeah. I guess it’s just a little strange for me because I grew up with Pac-Man World 2, so that’s how I always saw Pac-Man. Interestingly, Ms. Pac-Man was made by Midway without Namco’s permission, so artwork of her in the US was also pretty inconsistent. After Midway gave Namco the profits and rights to the game and character to avoid being sued, Namco redesigned Ms. Pac-Man to fit more with their official design of Pac-Man. Same applies to the other members of Pac-Man’s family that were created by Midway (Baby Pac-Man, Jr. Pac-Man, and Professor Pac-Man).
This cabinet art always struck me as weird too. I think there was a transition as in-game graphics gradually became more realistic: in the earliest days of video games, the art for games like Space Invaders, Indy 800 or Breakout had to play heavily on the player's imagination and it would typically look nothing like the crude graphics in the actual game. Later on, the graphics in the game could have a lot of detail and it made sense to be consistent. But Pac-Man was sort of on the cusp: do you do something more or less representational? In hindsight it made the most sense to stick closely to the in-game appearance of Pac-Man, make him a ball with a big pie-wedge mouth, because it became so iconic, but at the time that might not have been obvious.
I have horror stories of the first og pac man cabinet I have played on. It was at a now defunct arcade, screen was just scratched up to death, control overlay was gone, but worst of all, it had an ANALOG joystick. That made the game unplayable.
You can play Pac-Man on a Ms Pac-Man and Galaga 20 Year Reunion here’s the code: Up,up,up,down, down, down, left, right, left, right, left and press 1 Player Ms Pac-Man button and voila.
I really love your videos, you are doing history a great service by documenting these wonderful machine. I do wish you had a better camera/lighting though, there's so much detail we aren't seeing when you show the insides. I know these things are expensive and your channel is small - I would be willing to donate to a gunfundme should you choose to start one. Lots of great used cameras should be available since youtubers just have to have the latest technology.
Luis guess what? We bought a new camera! All of our new videos will be in higher definition, so look forward to that :) We'll see you on the next video, thank you for the kind words about our channel, we appreciate it!
There was a yellow one with the pac-man sideart, and then a blue one with Ms. Pac-Man art and a slightly (very slightly) different cabinet. There was also a dark blue one for Super Pac-Man that had a big pac-man piece cut out of it for his mouth on the sides. If you saw a blue or black one without the artwork on the sides it was probably just repainted.
Thanks very much for your response! I was a little inaccurate. The one i know is the one you showed in your video. And it has 2 orange colored lines (left and right on the front of the wooden from top to bottom). But I've seen some with black lines and some with blue lines. The machine looked the same. It's the only difference I can think of. Black lines: www.google.ch/search?q=pac+man+arcade&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiJ3puum9LdAhUjtosKHcsGD5MQ_AUICigB&biw=1404&bih=717#imgrc=5eiv1_6pTIz5GM:
Oh I see what you mean, yes that's actually called T-Molding. Originally it was Orange like this one, someone has probably replaced it (it just snaps in the groove).
I remember about 15 years ago one from NAMCO was being sold for $300 and was in perfect condition. I should have grabbed it. Now I want to kick my own ass :D
I'm almost positive that the heat damage you pointed out is from people absentmindedly holding their lit cigarettes while playing. People used to smoke everywhere. If you're under 30 you probably don't remember those days.
Theres new looking pacman arcades like this redesigned but its still the original 1980's version the CLASSIC one i mean in 2016 they still exist now in 2018 tho IDK im not really sure if there still out there 2018
there are some weird pacman clones in mame like coco loco is a spanish pacman clone where you start with 2 credits and you press a button to speed pacman up it also features different music and looks different. another weird one is called unknown pacman gambling game in mame it features somewhat creepy graphics and bleeping sound effects it also features a hidden gambling game in it nobody knows who made it or where it came from but there is a space invaders gambling game also emulated which uses some of the same graphics.
13:49 Ironically, that only makes it easier to play, and therefore, they're earning less money. Pac-Man moves so much faster than the Ghosts, and as such, it's far less likely to get caught by a ghost. It trivializes the whole game, so IDK why they thought they'd make more money.
The "slow" game, according to Ken Uston's "Mastering Pac Man." His book has a pattern that can only be used on the first board. Apparently, the arcade owners would change the settings if the people where setting high scores too easily on it.
Ply wood? I would've thought these cabinets were made of press-glued layered ply wood, what they sometimes call composite. Although, composite might be the reconstituted wood made of wood pulp and glue.
beautiful machine. That monitor is no joke, you are right it looks amazing even watching it on an lcd I can tell. Nice job on the re-cap and retouching the little inperfections Surprised the cabinet isn't mdf. What camera are you using in the video? The fact this video is a bit older I hope to be able to find one fairly cheap for filming. the camera not the game lol.
Joe's Classic Video Games there are times when I wonder if I should have tried to see about rescuing a badly neglected Q*Bert arcade game I saw sitting in someone’s forgotten acreage in northern Minnesota while working as a contractor for the local power company. I truly hope someone closer chanced on it and saved it.
Man, One more Pac-Man Saved! Yus!!! I've been looking for a cheap, (200 to 300$ broken or not broken pac-man machine) and was wondering if you had any ideas on anywhere I could look other than craigslist? I swiped a little lot of two Namco Plug n Plays, So i'm gonna turn one of them into a bartop or cocktail, and I've been looking for an old Pac-Man to have the real. Any Thoughts appriciated :D
Yeah, I'm not too worried about perfect paint, I've found plenty of 200 dollar pac-man or ms pac-man's, but the 200 dollar shipping kills me :( If you ever happen to find one, if you don't mind shooting me a link, that would be very appriciated :D
The original monitors were called Cathode Ray Tube monitors, like the old glass tv's before the LCD tv's came out. Over time the capacitors on the monitor's printed circuit board dry out and lose their capacitance, so to fix an old monitor typically you have to replace all those capacitors, they're called a 'cap kit', a collection of all the electrolytic caps in the monitor. They usually need a little more work than that, but definitely need a cap kit at a minimum.
Right, I got that but you mentioned a replacement CRT? I am assuming you meant that because the majority of the tubes I've seen in consoles have got terrible case of burn-in.
I didn't say anything about a replacement CRT, we just rebuilt the monitor board that was in it, that's the original tube. On Pac-Man burn in is hard to see because the maze never changes and hides the burn... it also has a smoked plexiglass bezel that hides the burn-in too.
I was going to say hey Joe then I remembered your name is something different right?? god I'm sorry I forgot lol. Anyway when you say it's cheap plywood what is a better alternative? Is 3/4" MDF better?
@@doomguy6502Nintendo is awesome! but so is Packman! just because you like one thing doesn't mean you need to hate another similar thing. and why are you even watching this video if you hate Packman so much?
Have you seen the video of the guy who sawed one of these in half just to see what was inside it. I seriously wanted to give that dude a a slap
I'm trying not to acknowledge that videos existence.
I changed the title for you :)
Lol!
You should do a little cheap shot joke about that video if you ever do a Pac Man PCB repair vid lol

Should have been shot in the knees instead of slapped.
Gorgeous cabinet! Even though I already own a Ms. Pacman, I would love to have a yellow Pacman someday.
About as cool as it gets!
I wonder who that handsome fellow running in the ghost infested maze is. He sure does love to eat.
I believe that's "Pac-Man", Pac-Man.

… that’s you, Pac-Man.
No damage on the lower back corners, something which affects a lot of cabinets especially of this era. The paint is in great condition and the fact that the original plastic was over that Namco Midway badge on the back is a testament to the owner of this machine. Awesome.
Yeah it was really in amazing shape! Never see them like that....
This is it, the game that created the fire hydrant spawning, fruit throwing, trampoline bouncing, pac-dot muncher from Super Smash Bros!
I think you're right!
37 years old wen things were made to last.. it looks fabulous
WOW !!!
That is a real collectors item.
Back in 81 / 82, arcades were brand new and this was one of the games, sometimes an arcade would have 2 or 3 of these, and Asteroids and Galaga and Galaxian.
I remember Centipede as well
God, I miss the early 80s
Such a magic time
Multiplex movies and Arcades and shopping malls, food courts, all brand new
What a time to live through
Electronics were just coming in
Radio boom boxes
Cassette player
Vacuum display and the first LEDs
Scanners the first digital scanners and 2-way radios
Personal computer IBM the first real computer XT
Such an amazing time
Watching tube TVs phase out
The LCD TVs replacing tube TVs and satellite digital TV was a big watershed
I miss my 12 foot C-band dish
The TV was so fuzzy in the 70s and 80s, and C-band satellite was so clear, it was incredible to have a C-band dish circa 1980
They had a spin dial originally and then Uniden made the digital Receiver and that was amazing
And everything was in the clear, no encryption
Those were the days
God I miss those days
They were great times to live through, the only people that understand it are the ones who went through it :)
How much fun is this guy having, love it 👍🏻
Thanks John!
who agrees with me pacman should be back out there in arcade places in 1980 2017 2018 2021
I agree! We need more cabinets though, they need to start building them again, we're running out!

I agree to I hate the newer arcade games and the old school arcade games can return YES
Wow watching u play RON.
It brings back so many memories.

For 1981. I remember playing all stoned and drunk.

this game proves one thing. you don't need phenomenal graphics, you just need a great idea and well engineered sounds.
Absolutely! It’s still the King of the arcade to this day.
I WOULD ABSOLUTELY CRY WITH GRATITUDE TO PLAY PAC MAN IN MY NEW HOME.
It can be done!
That monitor looks so clear and nice!
Yeah it was amazingly sharp! Usually the older ones are a little fuzzy.

pac-man looked weird on the artwork of this cabinet, he wasn't the ball shaped character he became later.
Yup! Very strange.
I never liked how he looked like a tic tac with legs that was on weed
they say he's supposed to resemble a pizza pie. i don't know what all about that is about.
They should’ve put a 3D regular Pac-Man on there with two eyes and the ghosts following him
Bad Side Art Pac-Man
Who cares what Billy Mitchell says. The only opinions that matters is ours(the fans)👍👍👍
It's so authentic seeing it on a CRT.

Thank you for watching Talisman Skulls!
I shudder to think the amount of coins I blew through playing this arcade game as a kid in the early 80s. LOL. I also played Donkey Kong like a fiend.
Pac-Man is still the King of the arcade :)
Wow I love it
It's pretty cool :)
I'm almost positive that the heat damage you pointed out is from people absentmindedly holding their lit cigarettes while playing. People used to smoke everywhere. If you're under 30 you probably don't remember those days.
John Gotts that's a good point the wear might mainly be from lit cigarettes
This is the original king of all video games before Mario and Donkey Kong
I was a pacman plug and play when I was little
Those are cool!
I'd like to think the stars aligned to pair that monitor with that cabinet
Possibly :) Thanks for watching Mr. Skeltal!
@@LyonsArcade Doot doot 📯
Theres new looking pacman arcades like this redesigned but its still the original 1980's version the CLASSIC one i mean in 2016 they still exist now in 2018 tho IDK im not really sure if there still out there 2018
I always call the speed chip the speedocide chip, I don’t know why it just works.
I like it!
there are some weird pacman clones in mame like coco loco is a spanish pacman clone where you start with 2 credits and you press a button to speed pacman up it also features different music and looks different. another weird one is called unknown pacman gambling game in mame it features somewhat creepy graphics and bleeping sound effects it also features a hidden gambling game in it nobody knows who made it or where it came from but there is a space invaders gambling game also emulated which uses some of the same graphics.
Let me guess, the dip switches?
@@EpicFurbynerd76YO I believe so.
At 12 Min, 38 seconds, you see the count of 36612 (Quarter Dollar) X 0.25 = $9153. Not bad for a lightly used Pac-Man.
Rememeber the operator split that in half with the location too....
Ply wood? I would've thought these cabinets were made of press-glued layered ply wood, what they sometimes call composite. Although, composite might be the reconstituted wood made of wood pulp and glue.
It's made out of whatever we always call plywood :) Thanks for watching Mark!
It was the SSJ1 of the video game Industry
Do NOT allow What's Inside 500 ft around your house or store
I wouldn't!
beautiful machine. That monitor is no joke, you are right it looks amazing even watching it on an lcd I can tell.
Nice job on the re-cap and retouching the little inperfections
Surprised the cabinet isn't mdf.
What camera are you using in the video?
The fact this video is a bit older I hope to be able to find one fairly cheap for filming.
the camera not the game lol.
Thanks for this video. I enjoyed it immensely. I literally came to this one after watching that idiot destroy a perfectly good arcade machine.
Yeah, crazy huh? We go the other way, we fix them even if they're falling apart!
You just have to be patient, they'll pop up, you should be able to find one for that. Hard to find them with the paint still fully intact, though.
Yeah, I'm not too worried about perfect paint, I've found plenty of 200 dollar pac-man or ms pac-man's, but the 200 dollar shipping kills me :( If you ever happen to find one, if you don't mind shooting me a link, that would be very appriciated :D
There are less machines nowadays... Thank you What's Inside...
Interesting thought: was Pac-Man the first videogame with cutscenes between levels?
I don't believe it was, because believe it or not, Space Invaders Deluxe had them :) Same company though!
Bro said “not sawed in half “ 🤣🤣
A classic.
You play pretty 😊
Awwww, shucks.
Pac-man killed by blue in the demo is the slow version.
I just bought a ms Pac-Man but it has the super Pac-Man sides and buttons. I thought the ms Pac-Man was a modification to the original.
伝説ゲーム、パックマン!ホラーみたいな ゲームですね。

That’s so awesome 👏
Thanks, we appreciate you watching!
The title is a reference to What's Inside for sure
I don't remember posting this!
I don't remember posting the reply to myself 😂
What was the CRT and cap-kit you mentioned in the video?
Okay that makes a lot more sense. Thanks for the explanation there, I totally misunderstood.
Whats the Name of That Arcade Game That says' Missed it by That much ???
Wheel 'em in?
@@LyonsArcade - Thanks 😃
"This was truly the first survival horror game. The ghosts are just total dickheads."
I agree with you
I have one of these and how much are they worth it works fine too
We usually sell them for $1299 if they've been rebuilt.
You have instructions for building arcade machines?
Unfortunately no I've never built one.
I was going to say hey Joe then I remembered your name is something different right?? god I'm sorry I forgot lol. Anyway when you say it's cheap plywood what is a better alternative? Is 3/4" MDF better?
I want one
How much does it cost? And where can you buy it?
I found out they might be an early version of Pacman (Puckman) it actually came out Oct 79 in Japan.
very cool, I didn't know that... thank you Louis for watching!
I love PAC man even he's better than Mario
Angie Hurd Mario is more popular and Nintendo is the best and pac man is stupid
ROBLOX fan 1fan Hey kid. Before there was Mario, there was Pac-Man. You obviously were born after 2000.
And galaga is better than pac man or maybe Doom is better than these two games
@@doomguy6502Nintendo is awesome! but so is Packman! just because you like one thing doesn't mean you need to hate another similar thing. and why are you even watching this video if you hate Packman so much?
I have a Pac-Man but it's missing the cord it was made by the Bailey company and I've been trying to find a three prongs cord help
I hope you found it. Try the Pinball place he recommends in later videos, or links on the page.
