My wife and I took our son to Crater of diamonds State Park for his birthday one year. We found a lot of red jasper and several small diamonds, and I mean very very small. It was a lot of fun! It was more expensive to dig than we initially thought it would be, but still reasonable.
Another great place is the Oceanview Mine in Pala CA. Tourmalines, aquamarines, garnet, and kunzite.
Surprised they didn't mention either of the US's big Pegmatite veins. Oceanview and another up in Poland Maine.
My dream is to own an RV and go across the US mining for crystals and minerals.. Graves mountain isn't far from me so it's definitely at the top of my list.. The Purple Heart mine is another great one.. They have some of the best Amethysts in the world.. LOVED THIS VID SO MUCH!!😍🤗🥰🤤💖

Jade is very common all over the central coast of California,if you just down the gravel bars on the coastal streams and rivers you can pick up jade cobbles up to around 20#
I have been a stone Mason since 1988 have always loved precious stones crystals never had anything worth anything but just digging something pretty out of the ground with my kids provided great enjoyment and wholesome fun for my kids
Crater of Diamonds is a fun experience for gem thrill seekers! You get lots of natural gems like jasper and calcite. The gemologists will tell you what gems you found at the counter. Love it! What you find is yours to keep.
Just went to Hiddenite yesterday grabbed a surprise sack for my daughters to do at home.
Another excellent spot at least for fossils is green river formation Wyoming. Public pay to dig areas and we went to one and walked out with dozens of specimens. I would say at least 2/3 of them were perfectly complete fish fossils with a great variety. Also walked away with some fish feces fossils LOL they are super common but what a great conversation piece. For those who don't know the green river formation is essentially a no longer existent ancient ocean. The rock consists of a sedimentary sandstone. Its very interesting to peel back the layers. Anyone who goes towards Yellowstone should consider this on their trip! Honorable mention from my state for fossils is the Mazon creek formation and for beautiful fluorites Hardin County IL on the southern tip of the state.
I've been finding emeralds, beryl, sapphires, labradorite, Epidote, prehnite, almandine all over in the upper peninsula of Michigan, some really nice specimens too.

I went to the crater of diamonds in July, very hot, dug for 3 hours, no diamond but lots of jasper and little shards of Quartz and calcite that looked like a diamond. Still a fun experience
When I was there (during a hot summer as well) the people behind where my family chose to set up shop were digging a pit that was so deep that they hit water and they had to use a ladder to climb in and out. I found out that they had rental equipment there and those people had to fill the hole back in before the park closed. I did find a lot of Jasper though.
Literally I have. I want to Moonstone beach at Cambria California. And I pick up of couple of Moonstones, Jades, Cloudy Quartz and even Jaspers.

Been to two places in North Carolina and the Crater of Diamonds in Arkansas. North Carolina was fun, not so much the crater of diamonds.
Ah yes, the fine art of mineral collecting. The ancient tradition of crawling through mud and digging shiny stuff out of holes.

This isn't the same thing but worth mentioning, You can go to Gatlinburg in the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee and they have a mining set up where you purchase a bucket of dirt and you pour it into these sluth troughs of water. It dissolves the dirt and leaves you with the gems. You're guaranteed to get gems. So that takes away the thrill of the hunt, I guess. But the kids love it.
i remember our elementary school went to the crystal caves (it was a Minnesota school but I think we stepped across the nearby border into Wisconsin for this), didn't get the gems I found identified but they were pretty little bits and I remember one was a nice purple one bigger than the other pieces, it was a fun experience and i'd definitely go again if I could.

@@evastapaard2462 up in northern Oregon? Not so sure, I'm a southwest fellow, so if you find yourself down near douglas, Jackson, and Josephine counties I'd highly suggest checking the gravel bars, mountainsides, and logging roads. I recommend Tiller and Days creek area
@@evastapaard2462 also if you have any auto immune issues, bring water filters for drinking and bathing; I had a HORRIBLE flare up when I lived there after exposure to the Willamette and molalla river waters. So be careful there lol

I think I want to go west/ south west. I really would like to search for Agate(perhaps thundereggs), pet wood and maybe sunstones...? I think I need some help to identify stones so a mine would be a good choice right?
I have to admit I'm a bit scared of the desert and the wildlife in Oregon! snakes, spiders, scorpions and animals much bigger.....not to mention I don't even know how poison ivy etc looks like...

I'm a Hoosier who lives near the Michigan state line and there's a lake in Michigan called Diamond Lake.
I'm determined to find my own digging spot. There is so much undiscovered out there

Most of these are in the south. I’d love to see a series- one for every region in the country. I’ve been thinking about doing some rock hounding in my area. But I also want to know more about what’s local to my region. What is my area known for?

Crater of diamonds is nice but more fun to go to Mt Ida to get quartz. You probably wont find a diamond but you will find nice quartz.

Diamond Hill Mine in SC is LOADED with awesome crystals and amethysts. just start sifting thru the dirt in the pit and even just walk around and find crystals layin around. its crazy i filled a new toolbox up with my findings from 1 day at the mine. My wife is still sorting hers i got her the same toolbox (they have a clear top so they are perfect for displaying and keeping). probably going back this weekend. the first trip was insanely good. Imma see if Graves mtn is open first tho i still havent been there yet. im 2 hrs from both places and just started hearing about them a few months ago. dying to go to Graves! there's sooooo much good stuff there from what ive seen bout everyone comes away with an awesome haul. so many places i wanna check around here too for agates and petrified or even agatized wood or just whatever the ground gives up. its an obsession lol
There's a kimberlite mine here in Elliott county Kentucky but if you're not from here you'll have a hard time finding it.
i am a dutch hunter of 54 years but i always make the stop at Arkansas, had a great time there good serve and a lot of great hunting area . have not found one yet but i hope to be back again soon ..you left out the franklin county site in NC ...and the NY Herkimer site

I'd like you to high light each US state one by one, teaching which rocks are there. Are the rocks in Arizona different than in Maine? Even if they're not valuable. I'd like to learn the different kinds of rocks common to each state.

Sadly, the Morefield Mine in Virginia has been closed for years. It still exists, but the current owners haven't told the public when they will be opening again, if ever. 😔

Crater of Diamonds wasn't a fun experience. Spent 3 hrs there & my friends found nothing & we're big crystal collectors. The only thing we found was small pebbles of agate & jasper. The gift shop had better crystals to find.

went to emerald hollow mine in hiddenite and dug for 6 hours with empty hands, worst place ever, not even a quartz crystal. everything must've been dug up already since its been open for so long

I went to Crater of diamonds in Arkansas and I assure you everyone else around us was finding the so-called diamond but we only found dirt so we renamed it the creator of dirt because it was nothing but a disgrace because it was just a bummer everyone else was shoot hooting and hollering while we're just burning or energy and not finding anyting

Crater of diamonds gets 170,000 people / year at 10.00/ person. 1.7 million dollars/year. I would seed that place with a few dollars of worthless diamonds each year.
Gem hunting started earlier than the 4th century in India. There are gemstones in the Old Testament -- the breast plate of the High Priest, for example -- Ezekiel 28:13 and in Exodus 28:17-20. That list includes diamond. Were those stones from somewhere other than India? If so, why mention when mining started in India? Seriously curious.

Diamond park is kind of a waste of time. They just put dirt that has been gone through right back all over the park. Do not expect to get anything good. Your better off going to the local crystal mines.
