    I watched your 1st vid on building this a while ago and noticed quite a while after how popular this rig has become , started seeing alot of other you tubers using this rig and singing its praises .great vid Greg 🎣

    • @gsp
      @gsp  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It has become really popular but the whole basis of the rig has been lost on alot of people. Its great using a hair rig on a pulley rig but that doesn't make it a dongle rig. It's the only rig that you can take the strain of the cast on the hook snood and offer a big big bait

    Great vid very clearly presented....thankyou.... just food for thought... the dongle can work well for smaller fish particularly flatfish who habitually swallow hooks... although itd probably work the full rig you show has been mainly used for big game in South Africa for nearly two decades....however they place alot more emphasis on bait presentation and free movement...a major plus of this rig.... along with the main point that is casting distance as it places the bait tight behind the lead and the lead link cant push the bait off the clip.... meaning it all stays streamlined and very big baits can be cast large distances.....tight lines all

    Great rig for Tope. Use heavy mono in a loop as the dongle off the hook, leave a large tag end and whip lots of elastic along it and the bait.

      Unfortunately there is no chance! It came from South Africa and is a stand alone rig. Its not these rigs that are basically a hair rig on a pulley rig. That isn't a dongle rig

      Definitely worth having in your rig wallet but it has its limitations in the UK. Don't just use it because its fashionable, use it if its the best choice for the situation

    Have used this rig a few times now last summer off of the beaches here in Essex with nice fat egg sized mackerel and squid baits for bass, and double peeler and razorfish baits for smoothhound.
    Although rather than a single swivel i tied them using Varivas threeway type swivel from Veals, with the weak leadline coming off of the smaller side part so the hooklength still takes the strain of the cast (2 lines tied onto 1 eye of a swivel upsets my ocd lol)
    Does work a treat though👌 going to give them a go in the summer for stingrays at St Osyth with some hige ragworm baits

    You can use a thinner lead line on a fixed lead up and over too. just make sure the lead line is a little over half the length of the snood and then when you clip it up the lead line will be slack and weight of the lead will be held by snood when casting. I prefer up and over rigs so it works for me

    • @gsp
      @gsp  ปีที่แล้ว

      The dongle rig is specifically designed for casting big Big baits for big fish with a disposable lead link . You shouldn't have weaker line on an up and over because if you snag the lead you lose the whole rig or a good fish

    Your right about the everyone's jumping on the bandwagon with the so called dongle rig used on a pulley. The hair rig part works well for our thornbacks as they are greedy and it realy reduces deep hooking but for the most part I dont think our fish are big enough in the UK to take full advantage of the rig first tried it in 2018 but went back to more traditional methods of bait presentation. Did notice you did not use it that often when you fished in the canaries so you have found the limitations of the also . Great short vid 👍😎 did see the first one when you first posted it

    • @gsp
      @gsp  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly nick👍 it does have its limitations and if your fishing clean ground and small to medium baits there is no need for it as other rigs are better. I think people see it as fashionable now and don't see practicality. For Big sharks and big mouthed fish though it's a winner

    Hi, being a keen beach angler, I see you are using a baiting aid like a modified piece of pipe to lay the bait in before you wrap it in bait elastic. Is it possible to tell me what they are called and where to buy them. Keep up the good work as you videos are well worth watching.

    • @gsp
      @gsp  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Many thanks Andrew. If you just search for baiting needle or baiting aid then a variety of options will come up. Sometimes they help and sometimes they dont

    • @gsp
      @gsp  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      😂🤦‍♂️Yeah I can never be bothered to tie fg knots so if I'm tying braided line to mono leader I always use the 'slim beauty knot'. Never had an issue with it and once you get the hang of it kev it's easy👍

    Hi mate..
    Ive looking at this rig mate but wanting to use for a couple of worm on it but how would you keep the worm on the dongle.
    Or is it best to use a hair Rig with a rig stop like you would in carp fishing.
    Cheers
    Cheers

    • @gsp
      @gsp  ปีที่แล้ว

      I wouldn't be using this rig for presenting worm baits. This rig is specifically designed for casting big big baits with a weak lead line. I wouldn't even try hair rigging a worm on a pulley rig because the best hook rate with small baits is going to be with the hook in bait👍

  • @rockyslay4310

    Thanks for this idea! I was just thinking of a rig for surf fishing on a rocky beach and your rig is a great solution. I use very thin braid main line so I also need a very thin line to the lead that can break off. My braid main line is only 0.10mm 7kg so then the mono breaking line can be around 0.20mm 4kg. And I will probably use big stones as lead so no problem if they break off. I just need to find a way to make the stone leads more aerodynamic! haha. By the way, I thought you could also connect a circle hook with a snell knot and that this knot actually improves the way the hook turns to the corner of the mouth. Don't carp fisher men also use fluoro line and a no-knot for the same reason? Thanks!

    • @gsp
      @gsp  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      They do use the snell knot but most still use wide gape standard hooks and not circle hooks. The snell hook gives the hook a better angle to give better hook up success where as a circle hook works better without any restrictions of a knot hence the perfection loop. If the circle hook is rigid in any way to the line then there is the chance to hook will flick out of the mouth as you tighten down and your line pulls around the corner of the mouth.
      The rig is really good and give it a try but it does have limitations.
      I love fishing light lines but it does throws up a new set of challenges.
      I hope this idea works for you Ricky Slay👍👍 tight lines

      @@gsp Thanks for the info! Now I need to retie a bunch of rigs haha. In the last couple of months I have been experimenting with a rig with big circle hooks. I live in the Netherlands and the nearest beach is a 10km bike ride. The problem is there are so few "large" fish, you usually catch a few small flounders that swallow the bait so don't survive that. Now that I have switched to large circle hooks with a small bait line below the hook, I catch a bit larger seabass and flounder and usually the hook up is perfect. Just like your dongle rig, I have a loop at the end of the short bait line and clip it with in an imp, and I also have the whole bait line clipped above so it is folded. Just one hook for ultimate distance for our super shallow beach.
      Which circle hooks do you use?
      I can not find real circle hooks so I use Gamakatsu Octopus hooks but I don't think it's a real circle hook because the hook point is off set. It should be flat, right?
      And I am not sure if the hook eye should be in line with the steel or bent like the Gamakatsu Octopus. Please advise, thanks!

    • @gsp
      @gsp  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I use black magic circle hooks, they are really strong but probably too much hook for bass and flounder. Mustad demon circles are good hooks too and I've never had issues with them.
      At least the 10km bike ride keeps you in shape! I could do with that to burn off all the cakes and cookies I eat! 🤦‍♂️😂

    • @rockyslay4310
      @rockyslay4310 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gsp Thanks, I will buy some Mustad Demon Circle hooks.
      Luckily I've got an electric bike, but it only supports, I still need to paddle. There is one big dune with loose sand that I need to climb and that almost kills me. I am probably underweight 1.88m 70kg but that's because I smoke so much weed haha. The Weed Diet!
      I've got a funny story about fishing on Tenerife. My company had 4 day trip to Tenerife for the "Kick-Off" so I packed my suitcase full of travel rods. I was going to fish with my colleague but he was too busy at the event because he is the photographer. So I went fishing during the "leisure time" and walked along the beach for about 4km. First step off the path almost killed me haha. And the sea was too wild to catch anything. When I returned to the hotel I was way too late for the next event so I only joined them at dinner. My manager was not too happy when he found out haha.
      My only explanation was that I was in "fish mode" which usually lasts for at least 6 hours haha. If I had known it's no good fishing in the afternoon I would have probably gone fishing during the night and slept during the event!

    • @gsp
      @gsp  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Using only 50lb mono kinda defeats the object of the rig. It's a rig to use a large bait and be able to cast the lead clipped to the hook length so the lead is on a weak link. You can present a big bait and cast it far with only 50lb mono, it will snap

    HEY HOW DO YOU BAIT UP A DONGLE RIG WITH PEELER CRABS

    • @gsp
      @gsp  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not the easiest of baits to mount on a dongle and if you're using a true dongle rig I would say that the rig is overkill for the bait. I would probably mount a peeler onto the shank of a circle hook on a pulley rig. If it's a big spidercrab peeler then I would bait elastic it to the dongle and just hook a tougher part onto the hook
