He knew, and he wanted that battle. He leaves as a friend, which shows he only said the "matter antimatter consume you" to encourage Mario to fight seriously.

Culex himself only has about 4,000, any crystals left standing will just pop when he's defeated. Trying to defeat him with all four crystals present is possible, but even harder (the rare Red Essence item can _really_ help here).
I mean, he’s matter + antimatter after all. It was only a matter of time.
They should make him dissappear with fancy effects, like in FF7
I love that Dark Star attack of his. Just when you think he's going to whip out a really artsy looking FF-esque move, it's just a black Power Star that bounces on the target.
Its Ironically called a Ztar.
Smithy, the last boss of the game, know it too.

Just imagining this boss in the remake hypes me so much, hope they do a good job.
I'm going to guess that remake happened cuz Square-Enix gave permision to use that FF4 boss theme, as half the rights of Mallow and Geno (cuz I get the right of both characters was 50/50 between Nintendo and SE).
Exact same reason why I'm here. This remake iis giving me a real reason to live (not suicidal don't worry, just it literally makes me glad and excited to be alive. It really is the little things in life, sometimes... isn't it.).

Only reason Ik he exists now is I thought "hm, Mario rpg was a jrpg. It probably has a secret boss". I looked it up and found out about this culex.
he's not gonna be in it, Nintendo already said any Square content is being cut, Culex is 100% owned by Square, he's an esper from FFVI.

This boss being a Final Fantasy IV reference just put a big smile on my face. Both incredible games.
I don't know how many people actually encountered this personally, but if you can outlast that boss for about an hour he just runs out of "FP" and becomes almost literally useless.
That was how I always beat him.

Fighting him for an hour sounds like a tougher challenge than beating him!
@@superdemonboy That's how most of us beat him, if not all of us, by spamming Peach revives and item revives. It has a bit more to it, but eventually he becomes a sandbag and you get a special armour, iirc.
Culex has literally one physical attack (which you can actually block!), everything else is special (FP-based).
First time as a kid it took a while. as a 40 yr old, it was just a combo of time

I’m hoping they make Culex’s design in the remake clash with the game’s art style. Basically, have him look like he was pulled straight out of a modern Final Fantasy game.

so...a kefka's cosplay that stole the four crystals came to mushroom kingdom and got beat by a plumber,a robot doll and by a princess armed with a frying pan?
Square enix made a really good move
He was barely in this dimension, you can say most of his power was used to BE there to fight Mario and co. He just wanted the battle and left pleased, showing friendship.
Even then dude, don't underestimate this plumber.

I love that they give a little shoutout to the final fantasy series with this boss fight. The four crystals bearing reference to FF1, The music setting off to FF4. If I am missing any references, or am incorrect please dont be afraid to say so ^^

Came here because I am hoping this secret boss fight makes a return in the Super Mario RPG remake.
during this boss battle it isn't super mario RPG it's final fantasy with super mario rpg characters.
I like it.
It would have been insane if they switched the battle format to Culex on the left and Mario with his 2 party members on the right, Mario top and the other 2 beneath him in a column.

The whole Smithy thing of "turning the world into weapons" may also be a reference to how Final Fantasy shifted away from the medieval fantasy style in favor of sci-fi, and how gaming in general shifted away from childlike adventure and fun to a more mature demographic.

Man the lore behind this guy is interesting. I'd love to see a game take place where he comes from. (Nevermind the final fantasy reference)
Step 1: unlock monster town
Step 2: get some fireworks for the kid and get some crystal thing
Step 3: be a very high level
Step 4: get the red shell armor for peach and the red shell attack for Mario
Step 5: enter the boss fight
Step 6: kill the crystals first
Step 7: KILL CULEX
Edit: this boss is super duper hard I beat him when I was either 6 or 7

The intro battle text for Culex and the Axem Rangers I still have engraved in my memory from the first time I played this.
Wonder if they'll bring back Culex in the remake. Or probably a Boss Gauntlet with all the bosses you've defeated, this time even harder, with Culex being the final boss of the gauntlet.
There's a couple of romhacks with that idea
Here's how I fought this boss back in 1996:
1. Collect 3 Red Essences and save your Rock Candy.
2. Use the Red Essence on each character and spam rock candies (this completely eliminates the colored crystals).
3. Fight your heart out until you win.
OR, rely entirely on Toadstool and Pick Me Ups and Kerokerocola to survive, occasionally chipping away at his HP
Both of those comments helped me
Or you could just let Geno equip the Lazy Shell then he'll be immune to pretty much all enemy spells in the game
Or just wail on Culex until he dies and the crystals go with him.
so whats the story with Culex? the design is based on the FFVI bosses, the crystals from FFI and the theme from FFIV, but i have no idea where he comes from lol
BirriaBoy64 - Culex isn't a legitimate FF character. He's actually supposed to be a mashup of different FF conventions.
The crystals are supposed to be from the whole "four elemental crystals of power" or whatever that usually is a story plot in several FF games. The boss-like appearance is supposed to represent final bosses (Apparantly Culex is latin for "Mosquito", which is supposed to be a small reference to Golbez from FFIV who's name is based off a certain kind of fly), and his master, "The Dark Mage" is possibly a reference to the class "Black Mage"
+ShadowPersona360 is this the regular battle finished theme? i guess it would make sense, but i dont think it fits mario...

It's being made by Square Enix themselves, as opposed to Nintendo. so.. probably? though they'd have to license it from Uematsu. And it'd probably be the Pixel Remaster version since it's the most recent rendition (not counting the ones made by Soken in FF14)
When the Dark Star was dropped on them...I wish Mallow had been there to attack with his own version of that move

The scariest thing about Culex is that when he attacks, there's no warning, no flashy animation, no anticipating it.
The magic based attacks cannot be blocked that is why this boss is so difficult in the remake they changed that to not all magic attacks
