Okay what they did with Culex is just genius. In the original game he simply says Mario’s world is uninhabitable to his kind. I had no idea what that meant until this. Beautiful! And his new 3D model is glorious!
A lot of that was just translation cockups in the original game anyway. What he says in this game is more faithful to the original Japanese release, in which he actually talks about the team's 3D forms.

This one's a postgame rematch exclusive to the remake. That first one was the big extra boss of the original SNES version, but now it's just the required opening course to the new big extra boss.
and even the LAZY shell armor rematch only won't help you survive its meteor spell the one used EVERY 4 turns BUT once Culex and the 4 crystals run of of FP IF you live that long its harmless at that point.
This boss fight felt so good. With how mind-numbingly easy the game was up until this point, not to mention the years of having basically mastered the original Mario RPG, it felt amazing to be playing Mario RPG, and needing to actually put effort into winning a fight. My whole party was at Level 20 with all the best gear (minus the Lazy Shell armor, because that always felt like cheating), and this was delightfully rough. I just wish that afterwards, the game would've ended with a more difficult Smithy fight. Especially with how they set up these quests by implying that your previous fight with Smithy was just a dream, and then from there you go out of your way to collect a bunch of new, stronger weapons. That setup for this chain of boss battles could've ended perfectly if after you defeat Culex, you're allowed to return to the final dungeon, and go through its true, ultimate incarnation. Rather than the dream version that was implied by Toad.
Culex 3D is to Super Mario RPG Nintendo Switch what: - Sephiroth is to Kingdom Hearts (1 and 2). - Unknown/Xemnas is to Kingdom Hearts Final Mix. - The Lingering Will is to Kingdom Hearts 2 Final Mix. - Yozora is to Kingdom Hearts 3/Re:Mind.
you know what is crazy, as an nintendo fan ive never really been disappointed in hardly any games. nintendo remakes are also very beautiful, if one day they do this to chrono trigger i think the internet would melt. but i will not lie this is certainly my second runner up for an rpg original remake
ITs Meteor spell does the full 199 + damage even WITH it that's why trying to run Culex OUT of FP for the rematch is impossible its FP may actually be Infinite.
@@veghesther3204I’m very sure it is, the earth crystal was the last crystal I had to kill and it ran out of FP like halfway through the fight which lasted at least another 15 turns. The game said it took me 38 turns in total to defeat him but I love we can fight him as many times as we want.
His face looked a lot more sinister in the 2D version in my opinion, this version's face looks like a delightful chap. Still an intimidating design but his face looks really chill and mellow like he could be your bud. Could actually make him more intimidating depending on how you look at it.
Someday soon, I will get my chance to face him. I just defeated Speardovich and am on my way to Land's End. I was hoping that Culex's rematch would have used Battle with the Four Archfiends as its BGM, but this is nice in its own right.

My favorite FF games have always been 4 and 6. I loved the idea of this boss in the original mario rpg. Just got to him in the remake (2d form) and was bummed he didn't get a 3d revamp. Then I found this online and was like "shut the front door."
Culex is more than just Mario, here's Crash, Spyro, Sonic, Aero, Final Fantasy, Persona, you get the picture. He's everything and everywhere. He's a frickin god.
It was SquareSoft back in the day who developed this game, with the remake being developed by they studio who developed ArtePiazza who developed a bunch of Dragon Quest Remakes, Dragon Quest VII, Dragon Quest XI 2d mode and Romaning Saga Remaster. It a sequel were to be developed it would probably be another collab between Square Enix and Nintendo.
Culex may claim to be a servant of a dark lord, but... Geno mentions how he doesn't seem evil. (In the scrapbook). He's more a really talented warrior, who talks big because he wants to motivate the heroes into giving it their all,.
I do agree on how seriously challenging this boss battle is but I've been able to actually succeed it thanks to some of my past experiences of playing the Touhou and TMNT games (for timing action commands) including Bloons TD 6 (for taking time to choose battle options).
The music in this game is fantastic!!!! As much as I love the classic, I haven’t switched to the classic once. Also, this Culex REALLY made me panic when he wiped out almost all of my team as well… I was like oh shit oh shit what’ll I do????? ;-; But I was still able to pull it off. We wanted a challenge? This guy will give it!!!!
The fact they acknowledged the original game of the culex battle to the remake brings pure joy to me. That is a fine detail by the creators of the game. I really need to get this game when I get a switch.
I wish Mario games had more bosses like Culex, but being part of the plot, you don't see many demons/gods in Mario games, and it would be cool if it were like that, not always Bowser or characters with goofy appearances.
Oh, and you can battle this boss again. That's why he's telling you how much turns this battle took: The game is challenging you to do it again but quicker. Sadly the Crystal Shard you get has no effects. It's just a trophy to show that you've beaten this guy.
So Culex reminded me SO much of the Behemoth boss you face off against in Super Mario Sports Mix, or a sports game that they worked on with Square Enix, and Culex using the four crystals is the SAME ones as the crystals you collect in the sports game!
And people try to hoe mario and the crazy multi to hyperversal feats in the series 💀. Bruh has fought beings that exist in and out of matter, 4d multiverses and people lowball him. Mario and kirby feats are insane.
Culex as a spirit battle in Smash Bros Ultimate Legend spirit Giant Sephiroth (coatless costume) Sephiroth’s boss form in Final Fantasy 7 represents Culex 4 kirby (red, blue, green and yellow) representing the gems Culex uses Stage: Great Cave Offensive (omega form)
Word. PR goes way too heavy and other than making it very hard to grasp what melody of it remains, the heroic nature of the song itself was completely drowned in shallow self-importance. This rearrangement is what it should have been. It soberly emphasizes every and each section without bringing any of it down and has a banger drum kit to go along with the exceptional bass.
Better than The After Years version too. I played that big pile of mediocrity with the original soundtrack option on and it was pretty much the only way I could struggle through it.
My favorite thing about this fight is that his intro is very Final Fantasy-esque. Other bosses had intros to their fights, sure, but they usually looked goofy or cartoony, with the characters doing something quirky. This guy summons his crystals down while flexing his brand new power at us. He's not some funny ahh weapon boss, not some quirky denizen of the Mushroom Kingdom. He's *Culex*
My strat for ol' 2D Culex was to farm [Rock Candy] from the final dungeon and then let him have it. I'm not sure if that's how you're supposed to do it but the AOE took down his crystals after a couple of turns.
You can also equip peach with the lazy shell and the frying pan then just let him kill your party except peach, keep healing her until culex and all the crystals run out of fp, then revive your party and attack him.
Yo he does seriously talk about a badass redesign funny coincidence that sephiroth & kazuya should both be in smash bros ultimate it’s almost a reference to that connection
Culex once said: "Perhaps in another time, in another game, we might have been mortal enemies... Let us part as comrades in arms." He wasn't kidding.

This one's a postgame rematch exclusive to the remake. That first one was the big extra boss of the original SNES version, but now it's just the required opening course to the new big extra boss.
Geno, Mario and Bowser's Limit Break is HILARIOUSLY broken.
Nice abs! He sure pumped himself up for this fight…literally. XD
and even the LAZY shell armor rematch only won't help you survive its meteor spell the one used EVERY 4 turns BUT once Culex and the 4 crystals run of of FP IF you live that long its harmless at that point.
Between IV's Pixel Remaster, Endwalker's patches, and this, we've gotten so many new versions of Battle 2 and I am so here for it.
Culex 3D is to Super Mario RPG Nintendo Switch what:
- Sephiroth is to Kingdom Hearts (1 and 2).
- Unknown/Xemnas is to Kingdom Hearts Final Mix.
- The Lingering Will is to Kingdom Hearts 2 Final Mix.
- Yozora is to Kingdom Hearts 3/Re:Mind.
Man, beating Yozora on crit was a pain.
And what the behemoth is to Mario sports mix
Just beat it last night, and sat there in awe with the FF prelude music afterwards. They really killed it with this remake
I like how 3D Culex was made to look like a modern 3d FF boss that would appear in games such as 14 or 7 Remake
I bet you people don't recognize the hair, the wings and the skin. Because that demon literally looks like Kazuya mishima.
He honestly really does though looks way too much like devil kazuya
Okay now culex looks like sephiroth fused with trance kuja.....and it is glorious
Don't forget... Devil Kazuya from Tekken.
He look more like neo exdeath.
He also looks like kefka as well
Finaly, 3D render Culex
you know what is crazy, as an nintendo fan ive never really been disappointed in hardly any games. nintendo remakes are also very beautiful, if one day they do this to chrono trigger i think the internet would melt. but i will not lie this is certainly my second runner up for an rpg original remake
Definitely gonna play this without the lazy shell armor. Gonna be the thrill of a challenge I’ve been waiting for!
i think without the lazy shell armor is near impossible I lasted until turn 17 before My party was annihilated....
@@chaddenning ooof. I’ll still try it regardless!
You are gonna* have to face the challenge either way, because the 5 turn meteor actually bypasses lazy shell
OH MY GOD HE LOOKS GORGEOUS AND HIS THEME IS SO GOOD IM NUTTING.
This is how I would imagine Culex if he were in a Mario Movie, which I hope they add in the post credit in the next one
This is insane, I loved that so much I can't describe. Awesome!
This is absolutely insane
I love how they use the boss fight music from FF4 in this secret boss battle.
His face looked a lot more sinister in the 2D version in my opinion, this version's face looks like a delightful chap. Still an intimidating design but his face looks really chill and mellow like he could be your bud. Could actually make him more intimidating depending on how you look at it.
Yooooo they actually remember beating him the first time and Culexs speech actually meant aomething thats so damn cool.
Someday soon, I will get my chance to face him. I just defeated Speardovich and am on my way to Land's End.
I was hoping that Culex's rematch would have used Battle with the Four Archfiends as its BGM, but this is nice in its own right.
Lol casually turns half the party into shrooms, summons Sun to burn them, then a giant piles of rocks falls on them, oh and let’s not forget a freaking meteor for good measure.
3D Culex: You will witness the true power of postgame content!
All the SMRPG fans seeing Culex again must've been like Joe Swanson going: "BRING IT OOOOOON!"
“Oh no he’s hot!”
-squidward
That's what I think about Culex.
I like that in most Mario guys, you just have a plumber jumping around and in a few games, you have a realistic looking god or dragon.
My favorite FF games have always been 4 and 6. I loved the idea of this boss in the original mario rpg. Just got to him in the remake (2d form) and was bummed he didn't get a 3d revamp. Then I found this online and was like "shut the front door."
I really hope Nintendo makes a sequel to this game. It would be straight up awesome to have Culex be the main villain
Culex is more than just Mario, here's Crash, Spyro, Sonic, Aero, Final Fantasy, Persona, you get the picture. He's everything and everywhere. He's a frickin god.
Ask Square Enix Nintendo did only ask them if they was up for the remake
@@vinnycamarata4907 the whole SMT, not just Persona
I love the end of the battle! Geno blasts him with a bunch of stars, doesn't kill him. Then Mario kicks a shell and he perishes!
Culex deserves to be more than a SMRPG secret boss. He NEEDED to be in Smash as some stage hazard.
One of the hardest rpg boss i fight in my life people IM NOT JOKING
Get ready for der richter
Or absolute virtue
Y'know, if this is Culex's true power then I shudder to think about how powerful the "Dark Mage" is.
The fact they acknowledged the original game of the culex battle to the remake brings pure joy to me. That is a fine detail by the creators of the game. I really need to get this game when I get a switch.
The devs shouldn't go that so hard. It's like a Final Fantasy boss but it's unused and transfered to a Mario game.
Well square enix made this game
Incredible
The best final fantasy battle in the last 20 years is this, in a Mario game... No one ff battle of the last games feels good like this
I wish Mario games had more bosses like Culex, but being part of the plot, you don't see many demons/gods in Mario games, and it would be cool if it were like that, not always Bowser or characters with goofy appearances.
Culex is like a mix or cross between Kefka and Sephiroth in their final forms.
Well maybe sephiroth is inspired by his design, considering the snes version was released before ff7
No, Culex is just Culex. No need for compare.
After Culex’s rematch, never touching his door again!
Oh, and you can battle this boss again. That's why he's telling you how much turns this battle took: The game is challenging you to do it again but quicker.
Sadly the Crystal Shard you get has no effects. It's just a trophy to show that you've beaten this guy.
Mola mucho Culex en este juego, parece que Nomura esta fuertemente implicado en su diseño en esta nueva version
Nomura no es parte de artepiazza y gracias a dios asi fue
I am really happy they give this more love from what we initially believe they did. This is a legendary game battle and deserves all respect
So Culex reminded me SO much of the Behemoth boss you face off against in Super Mario Sports Mix, or a sports game that they worked on with Square Enix, and Culex using the four crystals is the SAME ones as the crystals you collect in the sports game!
Certainly because this guy is inspired by final fantasy and that the behemoth is From final fantasy
Oh my goodness, the BGM is so beautiful. Thank you Square & Nintendo.
culex did it!! he became 3d!!
Culex is basically a final fantasy villain in a mario world.
Not just basically, hes liturally is one.
@@quikskoprbro968 the battle theme is from FF4 and the spells he uses are from FF.
@@quikskoprbro968 its the boss theme from Final Fantasy 4.
@@lubbo5261yeah but he's still not in any FF games
And people try to hoe mario and the crazy multi to hyperversal feats in the series 💀. Bruh has fought beings that exist in and out of matter, 4d multiverses and people lowball him. Mario and kirby feats are insane.
Culex as a spirit battle in Smash Bros Ultimate
Legend spirit
Giant Sephiroth (coatless costume)
Sephiroth’s boss form in Final Fantasy 7 represents Culex
4 kirby (red, blue, green and yellow) representing the gems Culex uses
Stage: Great Cave Offensive (omega form)
Its always nice to know youre fighting a superboss when they start with their strongest attack (in this case Meteor)
This version of prelude is beautiful
This is FFIV battle theme, not prelude
@@adrianrodrigopalafoxnogale8588 i mean the song after the battle that is prelude it sounds like prelude like the Start Menu theme from FF7 or FF3
When this FFIV boss music sounds better than the one in Pixel Remaster
You can thank yoko shimomura
oh my god he did the wing thing Zodiark does in his Extreme version's intro
culex should honestly appear in an actual ff game
Unbelievable.... I was wrong
I did NOT think they'd actually use Final Fantasy music. That's awesome.
He's always used the FF4 battle theme, even back on the SNES.
He's even more out of place. This is perfect.
Can we agree that Cu;ex should be the final boss in the next Smash Bros game
Ok I just gotta tip my hat to you, that Switching to Toadstool trick at the beginning was brilliant
mario can beat gods yet they still say that he is just a plumber XD
Man stronger then kirby
Please no power scaler in the mario community
@@spinozilla2421 nuh uh
@@ArceTheTroll yeah huh
@@spinozilla2421 they would team up and you KNOW it
My strat for ol' 2D Culex was to farm [Rock Candy] from the final dungeon and then let him have it.
It just came to me that Culex looks like Devil Kazuya from Tekken and Safer-Sephiroth from Final Fantasy combined.
Yo he does seriously talk about a badass redesign funny coincidence that sephiroth & kazuya should both be in smash bros ultimate it’s almost a reference to that connection
Should someone made the fan art of Sephiroth(Safer Sephiroth) and Kazuya(Devil Kazuya) 's fusion dance
Well sephiroth was definitely intentional, considering culex’s origins
This fight could only be described as “hold up, who said we’re done yet?”
