The hardest superboss in the game, Culex, rematch fight in new game plus in Super Mario RPG Remake on Nintendo Switch. BFD, Boss Fight Database. Mario RPG secret boss battle.
Hell yeah it does I didn’t think they do this much with him a epic ass boss remade in 2023 along with an remastered version of the original final fantasy 4 boss theme definitely kicks ass to the core n it sounds badass all the same
If anyone wants to know, this version of Culex has 8,999 HP, the highest of any of the bosses in the game, even more than the 8,000 HP that Smithy has. His Thought Peek thought is something along the lines of “Feast your eyes on the power of post-game content!”, so he pretty much breaks the fourth wall with his thought.
Nah, in the original you can also just come into the fight well prepared. Like, if you lost at first and then tried again after changing your setup to counter him. I beat him with my party at Lv. 19, and max level is 30.
I love the reference to his last appearance when he said "maybe in a future game" OMG. Feels like a circle has been completed. Also, battle theme 2 from ffiv sounds INCREDIBLE
I like to think that the developers couldn't figure out whether to keep Culex's 2D sprite or update it to 3D, so they decided to do both. As we can all see, this was an excellent decision.
In the original Japanese version of the game, Culex explicitly brings up how he's 2D while the Mario characters are 3D, so I feel like the devs definitely wanted to keep Culex's 2D sprite while also thinking "Hey, wouldn't it be neat if he was finally in 3D for this remake?"
@@dragonfire5000 what's funny is that I don't remember thinking that his sprite looked 2D compared to the rest of the game and it would make sense as the original game was just isometric 2D to make it look 3D. Okay what they did with Culex is just genius. In the original game he simply says Mario’s world is uninhabitable to his kind. I had no idea what that meant until this. Beautiful! And his new 3D model is glorious!
A lot of that was just translation cockups in the original game anyway. What he says in this game is more faithful to the original Japanese release, in which he actually talks about the team's 3D forms.

For those who want to know how to get the "Extra-Shiny Stone" You need to beat Smithy first, then Go to the Sunken Ship to have a rematch against Johnny, after beating him he gives you the Extra Shiny Stone.
Before you can do anything of this, after you beat Smithy Toad will come to Mario in his house and give him a pass for the Hotel in Merrymore to stay the night, go there and a cutscene will happen with Geno telling to go to Star Hill just follow what they tell you then you will be able to do the super bosses.

Him counting down before using the attack with enemy skills "5", "4", "3", "2", and "1" is also a very common occurrence in Square RPGs, perhaps most famously used by the Black Tyranno during the climax of the Prehistory arc in Chrono Trigger.
I prefer the bass from the original, the orchestrated version just doesn’t seem to hit the same. They should’ve contacted Jonny Atma for the remix lol.
15:24 when the beat from the chain dies because of Final Claw… the impact of the move, player fails to defend correctly, chain drops and the track goes back to normal. so awesome! FYI percussion tracks are added to the redone tracks when you have a 5 chain or more! so sick. love this game, the og is my favorite game of all time but this remake does a damn fine job.
8999/9999 is an insane amount of HP. He’s pulling out all the stops here, so you better take this seriously. Each crystal boosts a certain stat on all other enemies if taken out before Culex. Should you defeat him before taking out all the crystals, they’ll instantly revive him, but shatter afterward. So you gotta decide which is worse, beating Culex twice with no boosted stats or beating him with all stats boosted. Oh, and he’ll almost never use his normal attack unless he runs out of FP.
Not to mention he always starts off the battle with Meteor to bring your party down to 1 HP so you already have to waste the first turn healing up before you can even consider what to do first. We're screwed.
@@pyregg1572 That's pretty par for the course for Final Fantasy bosses. They often tend to have a nasty tactic you need to think-tank your way around it. Like fkn Yunalesca in FFX making you fight as zombies.. ugh I hated her.

Let's make them think we wanted to troll them by making them fight his 2D incarnation with his original theme then let's put a secret side quest where he comes back much stronger, with a sick 3D model and a remix of his theme. This was the greatest twist Nintendo could have ever done. What an outstanding performance by Shimamura, and everyone at Nintendo. The bait and switch with OG culex the first time around to this absolute unit of a reveal, Kefka-ing you to 1HP and pulling out every trick the game has with the four crystals. What a treat this final superboss was.
Could you imagine if Square made more Mario RPGs with Nintendo? That Mario + Luigi vs. Sephiroth meme could have been real (outside of Smash). But still it's nice to see them show fanservice for FF games other than 7, even if this is a remake of the SNES game, which of course had Culex in it.
If they ever make a new M&L game (low chances since Alphadream doesn't exist anymore), having the Bros. vs Sephiroth as a secret boss battle would be really epic
@@InumiDarkness That would be assuming Square Enix is interested in licensing their character for that use, which given the popularity of KH and the FFVII remake, the answer is probably "no."

This boss fight felt so good. With how mind-numbingly easy the game was up until this point, not to mention the years of having basically mastered the original Mario RPG, it felt amazing to be playing Mario RPG, and needing to actually put effort into winning a fight. My whole party was at Level 20 with all the best gear (minus the Lazy Shell armor, because that always felt like cheating), and this was delightfully rough. I just wish that afterwards, the game would've ended with a more difficult Smithy fight. Especially with how they set up these quests by implying that your previous fight with Smithy was just a dream, and then from there you go out of your way to collect a bunch of new, stronger weapons. That setup for this chain of boss battles could've ended perfectly if after you defeat Culex, you're allowed to return to the final dungeon, and go through its true, ultimate incarnation. Rather than the dream version that was implied by Toad.
Culex is more than just Mario, here's Crash, Spyro, Sonic, Aero, Final Fantasy, Persona, you get the picture. He's everything and everywhere. He's a frickin god.
It was SquareSoft back in the day who developed this game, with the remake being developed by they studio who developed ArtePiazza who developed a bunch of Dragon Quest Remakes, Dragon Quest VII, Dragon Quest XI 2d mode and Romaning Saga Remaster. It a sequel were to be developed it would probably be another collab between Square Enix and Nintendo.
Culex may claim to be a servant of a dark lord, but... Geno mentions how he doesn't seem evil. (In the scrapbook). He's more a really talented warrior, who talks big because he wants to motivate the heroes into giving it their all,.
and even the LAZY shell armor rematch only won't help you survive its meteor spell the one used EVERY 4 turns BUT once Culex and the 4 crystals run of of FP IF you live that long its harmless at that point.
you know what is crazy, as an nintendo fan ive never really been disappointed in hardly any games. nintendo remakes are also very beautiful, if one day they do this to chrono trigger i think the internet would melt. but i will not lie this is certainly my second runner up for an rpg original remake
Lol casually turns half the party into shrooms, summons Sun to burn them, then a giant piles of rocks falls on them, oh and let’s not forget a freaking meteor for good measure.
My favorite FF games have always been 4 and 6. I loved the idea of this boss in the original mario rpg. Just got to him in the remake (2d form) and was bummed he didn't get a 3d revamp. Then I found this online and was like "shut the front door."
Someday soon, I will get my chance to face him. I just defeated Speardovich and am on my way to Land's End. I was hoping that Culex's rematch would have used Battle with the Four Archfiends as its BGM, but this is nice in its own right.
His face looked a lot more sinister in the 2D version in my opinion, this version's face looks like a delightful chap. Still an intimidating design but his face looks really chill and mellow like he could be your bud. Could actually make him more intimidating depending on how you look at it.
The music in this game is fantastic!!!! As much as I love the classic, I haven’t switched to the classic once. Also, this Culex REALLY made me panic when he wiped out almost all of my team as well… I was like oh shit oh shit what’ll I do????? ;-; But I was still able to pull it off. We wanted a challenge? This guy will give it!!!!
So Culex reminded me SO much of the Behemoth boss you face off against in Super Mario Sports Mix, or a sports game that they worked on with Square Enix, and Culex using the four crystals is the SAME ones as the crystals you collect in the sports game!
Yo he does seriously talk about a badass redesign funny coincidence that sephiroth & kazuya should both be in smash bros ultimate it’s almost a reference to that connection
Culex once said: "Perhaps in another time, in another game, we might have been mortal enemies... Let us part as comrades in arms." He wasn't kidding.

I really hope Nintendo makes a sequel to this game. It would be straight up awesome to have Culex be the main villain
Culex is more than just Mario, here's Crash, Spyro, Sonic, Aero, Final Fantasy, Persona, you get the picture. He's everything and everywhere. He's a frickin god.
Ask Square Enix Nintendo did only ask them if they was up for the remake
@@vinnycamarata4907 the whole SMT, not just Persona
Finaly, 3D render Culex
Between IV's Pixel Remaster, Endwalker's patches, and this, we've gotten so many new versions of Battle 2 and I am so here for it.
I bet you people don't recognize the hair, the wings and the skin. Because that demon literally looks like Kazuya mishima.
He honestly really does though looks way too much like devil kazuya
OH NO, HE’S HOT.
After Culex’s rematch, never touching his door again!
and even the LAZY shell armor rematch only won't help you survive its meteor spell the one used EVERY 4 turns BUT once Culex and the 4 crystals run of of FP IF you live that long its harmless at that point.
3D Culex: You will witness the true power of postgame content!
All the SMRPG fans seeing Culex again must've been like Joe Swanson going: "BRING IT OOOOOON!"
you know what is crazy, as an nintendo fan ive never really been disappointed in hardly any games. nintendo remakes are also very beautiful, if one day they do this to chrono trigger i think the internet would melt. but i will not lie this is certainly my second runner up for an rpg original remake
Culex deserves to be more than a SMRPG secret boss. He NEEDED to be in Smash as some stage hazard.
Lol casually turns half the party into shrooms, summons Sun to burn them, then a giant piles of rocks falls on them, oh and let’s not forget a freaking meteor for good measure.
This is absolutely insane
Culex is like a mix or cross between Kefka and Sephiroth in their final forms.
Well maybe sephiroth is inspired by his design, considering the snes version was released before ff7
No, Culex is just Culex. No need for compare.
マリオRPG2の伏線にもなってほしいなー。
無いやろけど。期待はしたい!w
mario can beat gods yet they still say that he is just a plumber XD
Man stronger then kirby
Please no power scaler in the mario community
@@spinozilla2421 nuh uh
@@ArceTheTroll yeah huh
@@spinozilla2421 they would team up and you KNOW it
My favorite FF games have always been 4 and 6. I loved the idea of this boss in the original mario rpg. Just got to him in the remake (2d form) and was bummed he didn't get a 3d revamp. Then I found this online and was like "shut the front door."
I like how 3D Culex was made to look like a modern 3d FF boss that would appear in games such as 14 or 7 Remake
This is so darn cool and looks challenging! Not going to watch much of this but I can’t wait to get to it in game!
I love how they use the boss fight music from FF4 in this secret boss battle.
Yooooo they actually remember beating him the first time and Culexs speech actually meant aomething thats so damn cool.
Someday soon, I will get my chance to face him. I just defeated Speardovich and am on my way to Land's End.
I was hoping that Culex's rematch would have used Battle with the Four Archfiends as its BGM, but this is nice in its own right.
culex did it!! he became 3d!!
His face looked a lot more sinister in the 2D version in my opinion, this version's face looks like a delightful chap. Still an intimidating design but his face looks really chill and mellow like he could be your bud. Could actually make him more intimidating depending on how you look at it.
The devs shouldn't go that so hard. It's like a Final Fantasy boss but it's unused and transfered to a Mario game.
Well square enix made this game
Oh my goodness, the BGM is so beautiful. Thank you Square & Nintendo.
Y'know, if this is Culex's true power then I shudder to think about how powerful the "Dark Mage" is.
Mola mucho Culex en este juego, parece que Nomura esta fuertemente implicado en su diseño en esta nueva version
Nomura no es parte de artepiazza y gracias a dios asi fue
I love the end of the battle! Geno blasts him with a bunch of stars, doesn't kill him. Then Mario kicks a shell and he perishes!
*OH NO HE’S HOOOOOT!!!*
Let’s this be a reminder to all that a Biblically Accurate Angel is a Mario Character…
*let that sink in.*
So Culex reminded me SO much of the Behemoth boss you face off against in Super Mario Sports Mix, or a sports game that they worked on with Square Enix, and Culex using the four crystals is the SAME ones as the crystals you collect in the sports game!
Certainly because this guy is inspired by final fantasy and that the behemoth is From final fantasy
I like that in most Mario guys, you just have a plumber jumping around and in a few games, you have a realistic looking god or dragon.
Ok I just gotta tip my hat to you, that Switching to Toadstool trick at the beginning was brilliant
This version of prelude is beautiful
This is FFIV battle theme, not prelude
@@adrianrodrigopalafoxnogale8588 i mean the song after the battle that is prelude it sounds like prelude like the Start Menu theme from FF7 or FF3
I am really happy they give this more love from what we initially believe they did. This is a legendary game battle and deserves all respect
Its always nice to know youre fighting a superboss when they start with their strongest attack (in this case Meteor)
culex should honestly appear in an actual ff game
Unbelievable.... I was wrong
This fight could only be described as “hold up, who said we’re done yet?”
Holy shit Culex is 3D
It just came to me that Culex looks like Devil Kazuya from Tekken and Safer-Sephiroth from Final Fantasy combined.
Yo he does seriously talk about a badass redesign funny coincidence that sephiroth & kazuya should both be in smash bros ultimate it’s almost a reference to that connection
Should someone made the fan art of Sephiroth(Safer Sephiroth) and Kazuya(Devil Kazuya) 's fusion dance
Well sephiroth was definitely intentional, considering culex’s origins
I did NOT think they'd actually use Final Fantasy music. That's awesome.
He's always used the FF4 battle theme, even back on the SNES.
Is that theme a remix of Final Fantasy 4 boss theme ?
yes the pixel remaster version in the snes version they used the og ff4 boss music this fight is a ff reference notice the 4 elemental crystals
@@Chelaxim Pretty sure it is not the same version as Pixel Remaster
I might be wrong imagine this.was the ff14 version for battle 2 of ff4 I mean there later parts were basically plotted around 4
@@FutureLombaxthank god they didn’t use that awful ff14 mix
@@DerekDirkXIV version was pretty good in its own way
Culex is basically a final fantasy villain in a mario world.
Not just basically, hes liturally is one.
@@quikskoprbro968 the battle theme is from FF4 and the spells he uses are from FF.
@@quikskoprbro968 its the boss theme from Final Fantasy 4.
@@lubbo5261yeah but he's still not in any FF games
Thank you for keeping the ff 4 theme lol
My God the remix version of the FFIV boss tune hits hard.
I am so looking forward to this fight when I get this game.
I haven't played the game yet...and culex has a rematch battle? o.o now i am hyped
