I really like ohara's character analysis and plot analysis videos. Although he personally seems to enjoy character analysis more than plot analysis. I would really like a video where Ohara describes how goes about doing these and what thoughts and elements goes in behind them in the back ground. Basically explaining his analysis process.
franky is for sure a top 20 character in one piece maybe top 15...i think he is one of the weaker developed strawhats but to be fair he was top 7 range in water 7 and in enie's lobby he was a top 5 overall character for me and top 3 in that arc next to usopp and chopper so
I love that Franky played this hyper-masculine, "hard boiled" guy during his fight with Senor Pink, while also being the first to cry when exposed to the suffering of others. He was the one that asked for permission to fight on behalf of Dressrosa, and was the reason the Strawhats helped liberate the country directly. Franky's new design was a lil off putting at first, but Robin put it pretty well: Franky was willing to give up a lot of himself to help Luffy and Sunny to get to the end of the grand line, and his insane body reflects that self sacrifice. This combination of features: his willingness to shape his body in terms of his dream, his rugged strength, and his ability to openly engage with his emotions, make him great. Plus, I still think that him burning the pluton blueprints remains one of my favorite Ennies Lobby moments.
Very well said!!! Franky is such an underrated strawhat. I hope Oda leans into Frankys ruggedness a little bit more going forward though, I liked his pre ts edge and roughness, now he is a little childish for my taste but he still my fave sh and i love his design
The design is a weak argument whenever someone says why they like the pre time skip self better. His new body is just a natural growth and he is proud of it. And he didn't chane one bit either because as long as he has his heart, we always see Franky

I still remember how strongly I despised him with all my heart when he was first introduced and for the better part of Water 7 when he was an antagonist, then I started warming up to him and quickly fell in love with his character. I still have no idea how Oda pulled that off but now I can't imagine Straw Hats without Franky

I've been reading One Piece for a while and I found that tend to emphasize most with the Straw Hat that is around my age. In the beginning I was all about Luffy and sometimes Usopp, but now I'm somewhere between Robin and Franky. It's kind of like that phenomenon in Spongebob where as a kid you see everything through Spongebob's eyes but as an adult you appreciate Squidward's perspective more. Also I recently realized that Franky added some modifications to his body and inventions specifically in order to entertain the younger Straw Hats. I mean seriously, the hair? The tank that more cowardly Straw Hats can use to fight? The NIPPLE LIGHTS?! He's incredibly considerate to the "children" of the Straw Hats, like a father.
I fell in love with Franky 1st when he talked to Usopp about the Merry, and 2nd in all his scenes with Robin in Enies Lobby, when he showed his mature / protective side. And in Dresrossa he was just so Bad Ass SUUUUPEEEEER!!
Spoiler alert: U have been warned Franky had a chance to go to laugh tale in Roger's ship offered to him by the chad of chads ODEN himself and he rejected. That's how savage Franky is.
Honestly Franky reminds me of a quote from C. S. Lewis that I'm going to paraphrase a little because I don't remember it exactly. "Only children need to point out or show how grown up they are." If you can be mature when it's needed and when it counts, it doesn't really matter how "childish" and silly you are. If anything you're more enjoyable to be around.
Franky is a grown man within a series populated by teenagers. One of the reasons I identified with Franky immediately, since I was already an adult while reading One Piece. So I can sympathize with a character who had a dream as a youth, fulfilled that dream, and then later has to reevaluate that goal when it turned against him.
I like the huge contrast of Franky being almost completely cyborg but the first one on the tripulation to show emotion and cry over anything slightly emotional. Like how it goes against the stereotype cyborgs and men dont show emotions.
excellent video! I love that you bring up Franky's maturity, because it's one that's different from what might usually be seen as mature in the series. For example, you could say Zoro is one of the more mature members of the straw hats, but I feel the reason people often say that is simply because he's more stoic than the rest of the characters around his age. To me, Zoro acts mature for his age, but he's still just barely past his teens. Meanwhile Franky's maturity comes from him actually being relatively old, and it shows itself in a more subtle way because it's such a natural way for him to be, compared to Zoro who has been forced into maturity at a young age because of his upbringing
It's such an interesting parallel; for the most part, all of the strawhats have had their "edgey" dark side explored at one point or another. Luffy, through the magnitude of his personality, draws out their silliness because they feel safe doing so with him. Zoro cherishes that silliness as much as anyone else, but he's extra hard on himself to keep it safe after the traumas of his youth, at Thriller Bark, and at Sabody. In contrast, Franky is older, and has had time to deal with his painful experiences. He's open to crying, and loves the crew because it's a vehicle for his dream.
Zoro’s maturity comes from his serious mindset and his levelheadedness while franky’s comes from having more life experience and understanding of the world. There both mature characters but just in different ways
An interesting bit of trivia: Franky was inspired by his voice actor Kazuki Yao, who previously voiced Jango and Bon Clay. Oda liked his work, became good friends with him and wrote in Frankie so that he could have a bigger more stable role in the anime.

That’s pretty much the whole crew. Post timeskip they’ve been focusing more on worldbuilding. Half the crew was gone most of dresrosa & half was gone during whole cake.
I believe we are going to have more moments with Frankie after the Jonko Saga, especially if Oda plans to introduce Vegapunk to the Straw Hats since he already shares a connection with his technology.
Yeah there literally a scene where he’s on his back low on energy but then reaches for some cola then just powers up to wreck the enemy’s shit. If that’s not a nod to Popeyes I don’t know what is.

I also preferred pre-time skip Franky but that was mostly because of the hair. I guess I got used to the new design once I saw his weapons and his old hair back.
Franky, robin, and brook all act as mentor-like figures teaching others and giving wisdom but they dont question orders and are more likely to completely listen to luffy or even zoro. The main thing these 3 have in common is that they are the oldest, they are living as if they know that the younger people are going to make the truly big decisions but that they should make sure the younger people know how to make the right choice. Just like brook said "this is up for those young men to decide"

I haven't seen Franky getting scared of anything, besides Zoro, Franky is the most fearless Strawhat member and heavily underrated. Strawhat crew relies so much on him, and his gadgets, when Big Mom's giants were toying with Ussop and Chopper, Franky took them down with just one shot. He stood against Big Mom without any hesitation. And his fighting style is damn cool, those back to back suplex against senor pink were bomb 💥. Franky is extremely awesome!!

The engineering aspect of Franky is particularly my interest. Also the dramatic American caricature. He’s like a medium between robin/sanji/zoro seriousness, and usopp/chopper/brook silliness Though I find brook to be close in that medium, which is why I love brook. Also I appreciate not focusing on the pervert aspect of him, as it’s a lesser aspect of him
He’s not really a pervert everyone just thinks he is because when he shouts “transform” it sounds like “hentai” in Japanese (hentia means pervert) so basically franky is just shouting pervert when he’s fighting 😂
Like you, I never liked Franky at first because of what he did. But Franky is really the epitome of a gentleman, he protected Robin whether it's directly or indirectly. He's a very humble character, even though he knows about the ancient weapon Pluton. I love his interactions with Chopper and Ussop. He's like the goofy and cool dad that every son wishes they had. Hey Ohara, as far as i know, Franky was inspired by Jim Carrey. He looks allmost exactly like him and his old style is very similiar to the charakter "Ace Ventura" I know, this video is 2 years old but i didnt saw it until now and wanted to add my 2 cents. Greetz!
Aside from any of the monster trio, Franky is by far my favorite strawhat. Makes me feel like Bon Chan is on the ship. After monster trio, for me, it’s Franky, jinbei, Brook, Robin, Chopper, Nami and lastly Usopp. Franky is funny af but also mature and serious when time comes.
I remember when Franky told Luffy back in Dressrosa that he needs to help the Tontatta Kingdom before initiating the plan. Luffy just allowed him because that's what Luffy will do if he ever stumbles with the dwarves. He is a STRAWHAT by heart.

A thing that usually happens to me with One Piece is that while my first impression of many characters is negative, by the middle of the story I'm already crying with them. OP usually has enough material behind everyone to allow you to empathize with them. Also, the strangeness of Franky's design feels great, not only because of how confident he is on himself, but by how naturally he integrates with the Strawhats. One Piece often makes me come to terms with the fact that as a person I have some growing up to do.

Franky Already built the Pluton *Spoilers for how One Piece is predicted to end* In simplest Terms Pluton is a Ship made of Adam wood(which has the properties of being able to seal air tight( seen in the early part of the Punk Hazard arc when some of the crew gets kidnapped but sanji stays awake a bit longer than the rest of the crew because he was inside and the gas couldn't get in) and has the "weapon of mass destruction" and its "weapon", both of these features make pluton the only ship able to get to the one piece because, the One Piece....is on the moon i don't wanna spend an wiki article explaining how i know so i'll sum it up.above fishman island are roots to a massive tree, this tree is called Uranus and is the 3rd and final Ancient weapon because it created all known devil fruits, the nobles set up camp on it and are feeding them to slaves for their amusement(like the did to Boa hancock and her sisters, and the guy from the movie Gold) The Sunny is gonna go to the moon where Eneru has been this whole time and a fishman(probably jimbei) will tag along with the straw hats, a prophecy (maybe from the poneglyphs) says basically one person from 3 of the races the ancient weapons where given to (Skypieans got Pluton, Humans got Uranus, fishmen got Poseidon) will met on the moon and use the only true ancient weapon (the one piece which isn't actually physical treasure but something with the power to set everyone free from the marines control( hence why Roger said it was treasure to trick people into become pirates, being pursued by the navy making them hate them and wanting their destruction so they would do it even if it wasn't real treasure) and destroy the red line of which Mariejois and fishman island are on/under, the fishmen will use the Noah to survive absolute destruction(making the shark mermaid's premonition true). since the red line is destroyed the 4 seas combine in that spot to make the All Blue, Nami cane make her map of the world from up on the moon, Robin has read the final poneglyph by now, Franky's dream ship has conquered all(or whatever his dream was) and Luffy becomes king of the pirates for destroying the world government, earning everyone's praise, and giving them freedom to explore the world at their leisure. Brook goes to see Laboon now that he doesn't have to go all the way around the world, Usopp got his goal the second he got on the ship with Luffy, and maybe Zoro fights/beats Hawk eye

most people are like that they gradually warm to to usopp and franky some never do, for me i have always loved those charaters even from the start. the one i had most issues annoyed me a lot was nami. it took untill the wci for me to finally tolerate her

i had a very similiar experience with franky: when i was younger n the enis lobbi arc came along for the first time i didn’t know what to think of him n especially him joining the crew (Especially since it felt like it was between him n pauli orignally. nowadays it feels very clear to me that it was always franky n no one else :”) . but when i got older n re-read everything i fell in love with his charming n super posiitve character. him n robin are the mum n dad of the crew. i think they came together because they can lean on each other as well; keeping their focus on whats important when the rest is goofing around or ruff housing. they keep their cool n conviction n push on for their chosen family n they do it with a smile n i love it. luffy is forever my star, but zorro n franky are my second favs of the strawhats . i hope to see much more of them during the wano arc :) (already loving the zoro directions)
Franky may seem like a goof ball he just sits around cracking jokes but when the time calls for it he gets done to business. Keep in mind this guy is the second oldest of the crew and led a criminal organization for many years. This guy lived through alot of shit and has quite a bit of knowledge. He is smart and is well thought out when he comes to getting a mission done.
I know this is super rare privileged information that very few people know, but Franky was based on “Ace Ventura”. Who as you may or may not know was a Pet Detective.
I like how Usopp simply is shown to come from Africa, no specific country like the others. Maybe he lied to Oda so many times that Oda just forgot which specific country he was from...

Franky is also the smartest out of all the Strawhats, after Wano i wouldn't be surprised if he managed to make raid suits for all of the Strawhats after examining and modifying sanjis raid suit.

I fell in love with Franky 1st when he talked to Usopp about the Merry, and 2nd in all his scenes with Robin in Enies Lobby, when he showed his mature / protective side. And in Dresrossa he was just so Bad Ass SUUUUPEEEEER!!

Franky is a grown man within a series populated by teenagers. One of the reasons I identified with Franky immediately, since I was already an adult while reading One Piece. So I can sympathize with a character who had a dream as a youth, fulfilled that dream, and then later has to reevaluate that goal when it turned against him.

excellent video! I love that you bring up Franky's maturity, because it's one that's different from what might usually be seen as mature in the series. For example, you could say Zoro is one of the more mature members of the straw hats, but I feel the reason people often say that is simply because he's more stoic than the rest of the characters around his age. To me, Zoro acts mature for his age, but he's still just barely past his teens. Meanwhile Franky's maturity comes from him actually being relatively old, and it shows itself in a more subtle way because it's such a natural way for him to be, compared to Zoro who has been forced into maturity at a young age because of his upbringing

It's such an interesting parallel; for the most part, all of the strawhats have had their "edgey" dark side explored at one point or another. Luffy, through the magnitude of his personality, draws out their silliness because they feel safe doing so with him. Zoro cherishes that silliness as much as anyone else, but he's extra hard on himself to keep it safe after the traumas of his youth, at Thriller Bark, and at Sabody. In contrast, Franky is older, and has had time to deal with his painful experiences. He's open to crying, and loves the crew because it's a vehicle for his dream.
Zoro’s maturity comes from his serious mindset and his levelheadedness while franky’s comes from having more life experience and understanding of the world.
There both mature characters but just in different ways
An interesting bit of trivia: Franky was inspired by his voice actor Kazuki Yao, who previously voiced Jango and Bon Clay. Oda liked his work, became good friends with him and wrote in Frankie so that he could have a bigger more stable role in the anime.

Franky, robin, and brook all act as mentor-like figures teaching others and giving wisdom but they dont question orders and are more likely to completely listen to luffy or even zoro. The main thing these 3 have in common is that they are the oldest, they are living as if they know that the younger people are going to make the truly big decisions but that they should make sure the younger people know how to make the right choice. Just like brook said "this is up for those young men to decide"

Franky was the best new-arc character. He had a lot of development, screen time, character and influence on the story.
I haven't seen Franky getting scared of anything, besides Zoro, Franky is the most fearless Strawhat member and heavily underrated. Strawhat crew relies so much on him, and his gadgets, when Big Mom's giants were toying with Ussop and Chopper, Franky took them down with just one shot. He stood against Big Mom without any hesitation.
And his fighting style is damn cool, those back to back suplex against senor pink were bomb 💥.

The engineering aspect of Franky is particularly my interest. Also the dramatic American caricature. He’s like a medium between robin/sanji/zoro seriousness, and usopp/chopper/brook silliness

Like you, I never liked Franky at first because of what he did. But Franky is really the epitome of a gentleman, he protected Robin whether it's directly or indirectly. He's a very humble character, even though he knows about the ancient weapon Pluton. I love his interactions with Chopper and Ussop. He's like the goofy and cool dad that every son wishes they had. Aside from any of the monster trio, Franky is by far my favorite strawhat. Makes me feel like Bon Chan is on the ship. After monster trio, for me, it’s Franky, jinbei, Brook, Robin, Chopper, Nami and lastly Usopp. Franky is funny af but also mature and serious when time comes.
I remember when Franky told Luffy back in Dressrosa that he needs to help the Tontatta Kingdom before initiating the plan. Luffy just allowed him because that's what Luffy will do if he ever stumbles with the dwarves. He is a STRAWHAT by heart.

A thing that usually happens to me with One Piece is that while my first impression of many characters is negative, by the middle of the story I'm already crying with them. OP usually has enough material behind everyone to allow you to empathize with them. Also, the strangeness of Franky's design feels great, not only because of how confident he is on himself, but by how naturally he integrates with the Strawhats. One Piece often makes me come to terms with the fact that as a person I have some growing up to do.

*Spoilers for how One Piece is predicted to end*
In simplest Terms Pluton is a Ship made of Adam wood(which has the properties of being able to seal air tight( seen in the early part of the Punk Hazard arc when some of the crew gets kidnapped but sanji stays awake a bit longer than the rest of the crew because he was inside and the gas couldn't get in) and has the "weapon of mass destruction" and its "weapon", both of these features make pluton the only ship able to get to the one piece because, the One Piece....is on the moon
i don't wanna spend an wiki article explaining how i know so i'll sum it up.above fishman island are roots to a massive tree, this tree is called Uranus and is the 3rd and final Ancient weapon because it created all known devil fruits, the nobles set up camp on it and are feeding them to slaves for their amusement(like the did to Boa hancock and her sisters, and the guy from the movie Gold) The Sunny is gonna go to the moon where Eneru has been this whole time and a fishman(probably jimbei) will tag along with the straw hats, a prophecy (maybe from the poneglyphs) says basically one person from 3 of the races the ancient weapons where given to (Skypieans got Pluton, Humans got Uranus, fishmen got Poseidon) will met on the moon and use the only true ancient weapon (the one piece which isn't actually physical treasure but something with the power to set everyone free from the marines control( hence why Roger said it was treasure to trick people into become pirates, being pursued by the navy making them hate them and wanting their destruction so they would do it even if it wasn't real treasure) and destroy the red line of which Mariejois and fishman island are on/under, the fishmen will use the Noah to survive absolute destruction(making the shark mermaid's premonition true). since the red line is destroyed the 4 seas combine in that spot to make the All Blue, Nami cane make her map of the world from up on the moon, Robin has read the final poneglyph by now, Franky's dream ship has conquered all(or whatever his dream was) and Luffy becomes king of the pirates for destroying the world government, earning everyone's praise, and giving them freedom to explore the world at their leisure. Brook goes to see Laboon now that he doesn't have to go all the way around the world, Usopp got his goal the second he got on the ship with Luffy, and maybe Zoro fights/beats Hawk eye
Franky rules he's as awesome as the rest of Strawhats.

i had a very similiar experience with franky: when i was younger n the enis lobbi arc came along for the first time i didn’t know what to think of him n especially him joining the crew (Especially since it felt like it was between him n pauli orignally. nowadays it feels very clear to me that it was always franky n no one else :”) .
but when i got older n re-read everything i fell in love with his charming n super posiitve character. him n robin are the mum n dad of the crew. i think they came together because they can lean on each other as well; keeping their focus on whats important when the rest is goofing around or ruff housing. they keep their cool n conviction n push on for their chosen family n they do it with a smile n i love it.
luffy is forever my star, but zorro n franky are my second favs of the strawhats .

Franky may seem like a goof ball he just sits around cracking jokes but when the time calls for it he gets done to business. Keep in mind this guy is the second oldest of the crew and led a criminal organization for many years. This guy lived through alot of shit and has quite a bit of knowledge. He is smart and is well thought out when he comes to getting a mission done.
