In this video I discuss and explain the character of Donquixote Doflamingo, the major villain of the Dressrosa arc and one of the most iconic villains of the story. When it comes to Doflamingo's character, only few people ever talk about his motives and what drives him as a character. However, I believe that Oda has sprinkled countless clues throughout the Dressrosa arc and over the course of Doflamingo vs Law and Doflamingo vs Luffy that Dofi is actually a victim of the system that he was born in and ultimately sought to destroy. What then do the celestial dragons and the doflamingo family mean for him? And how does it make him so incredibly fascinating as an antagonist in the one piece manga. Why DOFLAMINGO Wears Glasses & The TRUE Meaning of the BIRD CAGE, a One Piece Villain Analysis.

“Pirates are evil the navy is just, but that’s only true because history tells us so. Children who’ve never known peace have different values than children who’ve never known war.”

That quote truly solidified his character.
      It summarises him quite well.
It's that level of moral relativity and ambiguity that makes him one of my favourite OP characters, because he could've just as well have been a marine like Akainu or justice seeking vigilante like Dragon if his life had been different.
Ironically the way life's realities hit him, it didn't ground him, but rather it blew his ambitions out of proportion which inflated his flamboyant persona.
It's so real, yet fantastical at the same time, and that's why I love Doffy, just like the Joker.

You can be a person who is something like a doctor and everybody thinks your this perfect person but you can be using this to experiment on people. But as something like a gang member who helps people out of their situation. Just because you are called a gang then you are a bad person who kills and does nothing but harm

As someone who despises and disagrees with the "born evil" trope, I may have an explanation for Doflamingo's character as a child that avoids that trope entirely. People are created unequal; that's simply a fact. Some people are more easily influenced than others. Some people aren't necessarily born evil but are more susceptible to corruption than others. Doflamingo absorbed the lifestyle and teachings of his fellow nobles more than that of his parents. The complete opposite of his brother, Rosinante. As a result, his morals as a kid were very questionable. And then the tragedies of his life took place, and one event, in particular, is what I believe pushed him over the edge- the death of his mother. And then, after murdering his father and coming under the influence of the other Donquixote pirates, he gave in to pure evil, eradicating the last semblance of humanity left in him.

I think what makes Doffy so great is because he is the final draft of what Oda wanted in an evil self obsessed villain. Fishman Island, Punk Hazard, and dressrosa all have similar stories. Mad man takes over island and enslaves its people so he can impose his ideology upon them. When things don't go their way they decide to wipe out all life and start again somewhere else. However Doffy isn't a cliche like Hody Jones who is honestly boring, while also having an actual reason for feeling the way he does unlike Ceasar who is evil for evil sakes. Not to mention you actually care what happens in the end and to the people involved. I wasn't invested at all in the people when Noah was about to fall on them. I didn't care when the gas was covering people up in "stone". However I was upset and saddened by the residents of Dressrosa being forced to kill each other, turned into toys and forgotten, and then to finally be trapped in a cage that would slowly destroy everything they have ever known before killing every last one of them. Doflamingo, his "family", and the world building of Dressrosa was done so beautifully because it learned from the failures of the past two arc and villains and perfected the message that Oda wanted to tell.

its a subtle but nice touch that in the grand line doflamingo wore his coat like a pirate (arms in sleeve) but in the new world he wore his coat like a marine (coat over shoulders). i think this symbolizes his status and possibly that his "pirate" self was just an exotic persona he flaunts to the world for attention while his real self is obsessed with order and control like the marines.

After watching this, it made me realise why Doflamingo takes the name of Joker, when you play most card games, you always remove the jokers from the deck, so the Joker had to be removed for the real game to begin, thus in the One piece world, the openning moves to becoming the Pirate king, Kiddo move, team up with Big Mom, Luffy's move, gathering allies, Shanks's move to talk to the elders of the world Nobles, the nobles of the world move to remove the Warlord system, thus the game is afoot, who will become the next Pirate King or ruler of the seas and what will they do with that place, the only player whose has yet to make a known move is Black Bread, the Revoluationies made a move at the gathering of the kings, thus its Black bread's turn, what move will he make?

One of the greatest antagonist I've ever seen.
Actually, giving Doffy the Ito Ito no mi was beyond than a great writing skill from Oda, because it puts in a nutshell who Doflamingo truly is. He is the one behind the strings but he was also manipulated by : his ego, the dirty society where he was born and finally, by Trebol and his friends. His "family" was nothing but a joke. In some ways, it reminds me of Rui from Demon Slayers, who was looking for a family but he didn't know the meaning of a family. Doflamingo knew it in some ways but was blind, and he hasn't seen nothing. He probably was looking for some "respect" and "love", and according to this character, the word "family" seems to be the group of persons who can give him everything he wants (and to whom he can give everything). So yes, he thinks that Trebol, Diamante, Pica and Vergo gave him what he wanted, so they are part of his family. But the other way is not true : they used this child to become more powerful.
Doflamingo is both a victim and a criminal, he inherates the Celestial Dragon system, so he feels that he was superior, but was weak at the same time, because he didn't see that he only was a puppet in the hands of his friends.
I've written an analysis for this character, explaining why Doflamingo is one of the most important antagonist in One Piece (if not the most important just behind Blackbeard) : his appearance, his backstory, his personnality, his powers, his crew, his symbolism, and his role in the plot.
I truly love this character, easily in my top 3.
By the way, what a great video ! You did a really good job !

Wow.... I never saw this much insights about the doflamingo story... Nice thoughts... The glass being shattered and the cage symbolism was really great and suits the story... I never saw through it like this.
Edit: Subscribing for this video.... First time here

Oh my god. What a character analysis.
Thats why I'm so emphatizing Doflamingo. Because his ideal is totally me.
Thank you for your enlightenment of what I could become if I continuing this path. 🤗

Ohara a bit out of context, but I really like your thumbnails for scene analysis, manga pages made it look monumental. Seeing that you changed it made me a bit sad hahhaha

Oh My God!!! Thank you so much for this video! I just finished watching Dressrosa arc and Doflamingo is my favourite villain! He is such a great character that I actually felt sad to see him being pulled up after his defeat. But this explains him so well!
At first, I thought his character was so tragic but so royal that I wanted him to die and not survive like Crocodile or other villains. But after hearing the birdcage theory you talked about, I am glad he survived.
Also, side note, I literally started watching One Piece after seeing your videos about them so thank you for giving absolute QUALITY content! ✨✨✨

What I always found super interesting is that despite wanting to become immortal Dofy never went after Law in all the years since Minion. He said he wanted to educate him to die for him yet despite all his influence and might he never confronted Law himself.

    Great Analysis !!!
But the contrast between Fujitora (blind) and Doflamingo (sunglasses) is missing. Why is Doflamingo wearing a Kabbalah wristband on the right Arm => attracting evil => Evil Eye ???
I believe there is more deeper context in Doflamingos Sunglasses :)

I myself have thought a lot about the character of Doflamingo. It tells you how well this character has been created. You really start to wonder why he's so bad. What is the ultimate reason why he is what he is today and it makes you feel sorry for him. A really great character (one of the best in One Piece) and hopefully we’ll see him even more in the future. Thanks for the great video❤
