    While I know that this is an old video, you might see the comments and I just want to add a few things. Packing light for cold weather: if you can find silk long underwear, they are very thin, light and pack very very small but you wear them under your clothes and they keep you very warm. I have used them at 14000 feet during a snowstorm and stayed very warm with only a long sleeve T-shirt and a camisole. They are not as common and often cost $50-$100 per set (top and bottom) but will last decades. My daughter has an old pair of mine that were my mother’s before me and they have to be over 50 years but still look fine. And work fin. They roll to the size of a pair of ankle socks. When you fold your jeans, tuck one leg in and fold the other leg about 4-5 inches from the end and tuck the jeans into the pocket you created. Try to alternate which sock you fold over. If you cannot tell the difference of one from the other then you are already doing this. But if one sock is looser than the other, tuck the loose one in and fold over the other. Socks are the worst for stretching out and then they slide down into your shoe. Sometimes I will pack my clothes into an entire change per roll so I can grab a roll to go shower. I will do this if I have to go to another building to shower and don’t really have the space to pull everything one at a time. Dorms, hostels and similar. And pack extra socks and underwear in side pockets. When I wash clothes, I repack in the same way.

    • @WhatashameMaryJane
      @WhatashameMaryJane  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The video is old but still gold and lots of people keep watching it, so your advices will be certainly read. Silk underwear is interesting, I don’t know much about it. Sure it keeps warm and sure it will last forever, my concern is about how comfortable it can be: as far as I know , silk cannot be mixed with synthetic materials like cotton does, to make it stretchy. Am I right? I imagine having non stretchy underwear might be quite uncomfortable...

    Really good suggestions. I pack my shirts with my shirts/pants with pants in packing cubes.... this video had SUPER SUGGESTIONS on folding socks and underwear ... I immediately did some and compared to my others ... superior! Shoes I pack into shower caps (from motels) .... we take large zip locks for dirty clothes ... separates & no smell issues. Your packing video is one of the FEW that actually shows minimal packing. Thank you!

    • @WhatashameMaryJane
      @WhatashameMaryJane  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thanks for your contribution! Packing cubes are a GREAT tip for those backbacks that only open vertically (like the one I'm currently travelling with in Northern Europe) cause otherwise your stuff simply becomes a big mess (they're also good for very messy people, with any kind of luggage :P ). For the shoes I can't abandon the plastic bags, cause I feel like it's the only way to seal all the dirt... Zip locks for dirty clothes is also a good suggestion :) I'm planning on making a new better video about how to pack light.
      P.S. that underwear/socks folding technique...now I see friends of mine who use it even just to keep their stuff organised at home in their drawer!

    Rick Steves has a similar mantra, you can pack for almost anything with a shoulder bag. Too many travelers burden themselves with a boat anchor for no reason. The reason you are traveling is not to be at home. So don’t take home with you.

    nice video . but the same as a hundred other similar videos out there . and what they also all have in common is that even though they show you how efficient you can get everything into carry-on hand luggage . not one of them addresses the issue of weight restrictions of carry-on bags which is normally around 7kg

    • @WhatashameMaryJane
      @WhatashameMaryJane  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You are absolutely right and I'll tell you immediately why I don't mention it. Because it's impossible. I honestly wouldn't be able to travel carry on only with less than 10 kg. The trick is simply the backpack: because I use a backpack, I've never gotten checked on size or weight yet. It's the main reason why I don't bring a suitcase, which I would honestly prefer. Every time I go to the airport I know that I have 1,2,3 o even 5 kg more than what my cheap ticket allows me and I simply decided to take the risk.

    I think you meant Ryanair. Yeah they have super strict luggage policy. But they also allow people bring free-shop bag beside small bag. Thus, you can find a free shop at airport, buy something inexpensive and ask for big bag and put your extra stuff in it;) bungee cords are also very helpful to carry more clothes or shoes around your body.

    • @WhatashameMaryJane
      @WhatashameMaryJane  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think I was travelling with WizzAir actually, but doesn't really matter, nowadays they all restricted their policies. Even EasyJet now doesn't allow an extra small bag. Ryanair got even worst. The duty free bag trick I used already a couple of times. Very comfortable if you want to avoid carrying too much stuff in your hands while boarding.

    • @WhatashameMaryJane
      @WhatashameMaryJane  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To be honest, I think I've always flown with several kg extra than what was allowed. Always a bit nervous about it until I board, but no one has ever weighted my luggage so far. I think it's almost impossible that your luggage gets weighted if A) you only have carry on, which means you don't have to to to the luggage check in where they have the scale and B) your hand luggage consists in a backpack. It's just how it works.

    • @cenidee
      @cenidee 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@WhatashameMaryJane That's what we always hope for but sometimes some airports/airlines weigh hand carry at the check in counter or before boarding checking weight & size of the bag.

      cenidee I just take the risk every time, thinking that if it had to happen to me one day, I would first try to wear all the heaviest items and if it doesn’t work, I would pay the extra fee. really good video. my only concern is the toiletries, you packed them in the middle of everything in a regular toiletries bag. in hand luggage all liquids must be in a clear 1 litre bag and must be taken out of the backpack during security check at the airport. so you need to pack them so that it's quick and easy to take them out.

    • @WhatashameMaryJane
      @WhatashameMaryJane  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi. You're kind of right about the toiletries, but for the moment I have no intention of changing my method. For my experience, it doesn't happen often that they actually require you to take the liquids out on your luggage. When it happens (I know for example that in London and in Oslo they always require the liquids out) I just spend those five minutes to take them out and put them back in again. I travel for long periods of time so it makes no reason for me to sacrifice the comfort of a perfect everyday toiletry bag to save me those 5 minutes in some of my flights.

    • @elinao
      @elinao 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@WhatashameMaryJane you have been very lucky! I've always had to take them out. they're extremely strict in my country (finland). Poi anche all'arte umile, ma ingegnosa, di arrotolare le mutande. Però volevo dire che sei anche la parte bella dell'Italia quando vedo questo paese, abbastanza chiuso, provinciale e introflesso, che gira per il mondo, apprende e si fa conoscere come suo cittadino, che sa essere particolare e nel contempo muoversi disinvoltamente in contesti diversissimi. Ho visto un tuo video di quando giri per New York in un magnifico crepuscolo e con un ragazzo cinese, assaggi atmosfere e sapori di Little Italy. E ogni tanto me lo riguardo. • @Calamity_Jem
    @Calamity_Jem 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    In my opinion there's still so many things that you really don't need in the bag you showed us !
    If you take two pair or leggings, why also bring a jogging ? You can use one legging for sleeping and chilling and the other one to work and treking.
    One pair of shoes and one pair of flip flops if enough. 4 white tops !!! Why ? And just a Jean is also more than enough. The hair dryer .......
    I didn't even had that many clothes in my one year travel bag ! I think you Can really make it better but it's a good start anyway
    Still it's really nice to show how light you can travel and how little you need to feel confortable and face any situation. Even as a woman (for those who still doubted 😉)

    • @WhatashameMaryJane
      @WhatashameMaryJane  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Jeromine, I do agree with you! I actually took only one pair of leggings as a pijama and a jogging pair of pants for hiking (I sweat in them so I cannot use them for anything else), but I took two pair of jeans that were not necessary: one would have been enough.
      About the shoes two pairs were actually necessary because I could not go hiking with those light sneakers and could not stroll in the cities with heavy boots.
      This video I shot more than one year ago. In one year I packed so many times more, always in carry on, and I tried several different solutions. I also experienced a couple of times the lack of clothes: I took with me too few items and I felt uncomfortable for the whole trip. Also, my trusty hairdryer broke and I travelled a few weeks without it: I will never do that again. It's been a nightmare.
      Has it ever happened to you that you didn't pack enough stuff?

      @@WhatashameMaryJane To travel I used a pair of Palladium that got a double fonction (+ or - covering the leg) & a pair of very resistant sendales. I do believe one is not enough but still managable
      I never had a problem with packing cuz I was Always asking myself those questions :
      Can I use it in different situations ? Is it comfortable and resistant ? Does it fits with the rest of my cothes ?
      I started with a base of 3 colors : black, grey and red bordeaux. Because I was traveling in Asia it had to cover my body but I wanted also to be feminin. It took me long time to find the perfect pieces ! But at the end I changed some to replace with clothes made in the country, more adapted to the weather 😊

    Everybody often shows how to pack light for a long trip but nobody actually mentions how often they would need to do the laundry.
    I need to go for 3.5 weeks across France & VN it may not stay anywhere long enough to do laundry. Therefore how to pack light?

    • @WhatashameMaryJane
      @WhatashameMaryJane  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Interesting comment. When I'm on the go I usually do laundry every 8-10 days, or I can even stretch to two weeks. Depending on how much underwear you bring with you, it's usually easy to hand wash a couple of panties in the sink, maybe squeeze them very tight in a towel and let them air dry during the night. The rest of the clothes can last me up to 10-14 days honestly, but it also depends on personal features and that's maybe why nobody thinks about mentioning this info. I sweat rarely for example, so I can reuse the same t-shirt for 2 or in the winter even 3 days in a row. But there are people who need to change it every single day.

    Here's some additional tricks to help make it easier to locate things in the backpack:
    Use different sized clear zip-lock freezer bags for the same kind of articles.
    1. Underwear
    2. T-shirts/blouses
    3. Socks
    4. Toiletries
    5. Each pair of any footwear including shower/beach slippers.
    etc.
    This makes it easier to locate items, maximize space, and shift things around.
    The REAL tip is to use a paper hole punch to make a single hole near a corner to let the air out so they will pack tighter -- especially on airplanes to keep them from expanding as the pressure drops during ascent.
    Keep one large freezer bag intact to separate dirty or wet clothes until you get get to a place to clean/dry things.
    UPDATE: I also use the bags to separate items in my computer bag like cables and components (I'm an IT consultant and travel with various small parts).
    And of course, reuse the bags as long as you can. Reducing plastic waste should be everyone's priority.

    • @WhatashameMaryJane
      @WhatashameMaryJane  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow, impressive tips! The only thing I recommend is to not buy those disposable bags just for this purpose and definitely keep them in the suitcase when not travelling so that you can reuse them for dozens of times. Disposable plastic items need to disappear from the market.

    • @lohphat
      @lohphat 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WhatashameMaryJane Agreed. I reuse the bags until the y fall apart. I am VERY conscious of plastic waste and avoid single use plastic when I can. I even use a SodaStream to avoid buying pre-made even though I recycle. Reducing demand for plastic is important.

      It might have been 12 kg or 13, anyway out of the limit of the air company for sure. I got this question from someone else as well and it's totally legit. The thing is that if you travel with backpack instead of suitcase as a hand luggage, you don't get checked. You still risk sure, cause it's not 100%, but so far I've never been checked, whereas I've seen several times people travelling with me getting their luggage sized and weighted because they had suitcases. Hope it helps.
