X and Zero were involved regardless in X4 but X5 is where Inafune wanted to focus more onto Zero's character and story so he could move onto making Mega Man Zero to expand more onto him as a character with X taking a backseat due to how much he's faced to the point of snapping. That was going to be the initial plan for X as a villain, but was replaced by Copy-X since fans would be heartbroken fighting their beloved protagonist The Mega Man franchise was just pumping out games after games every year (a worse saturation than GameFreak's) to the point where everyone was tired of it before dying down during the 2000s, until Legacy Collections and Mega Man 11.
When you have been fighting for so long, you slowly lose your sanity. I am not giving X an excuse but fighting wars drains you mentally and emotionally.

I got no idea from where you got that he was "afraid of loosing himself" when the capsule Light built to keep X in stasis had the very purpose of testing his morals for 30 years in order to prevent him from ever going evil.

I wish he had enough to be honest, Zero had pretty much stolen the MC status from him in the X series. The problem is that X is too pure and he doesn't enjoy fighting that much, if he goes all-in nothing can stop him really. I think Zero is stronger than X (raw power), but the latter always had more potential in terms of battle prowess (better armors, near infinite potential, insane adaptation etc).
That's such a halfbaked excuse for his incompetence, it completely goes against his sense of duty that was talked about on the snes catalogue, I hate how the writers have forever ruined X' character....
So this must be inspired by the original idea for X in the Zero series. Originally, there was no Copy X. It was going to be the original X but they decided against it. I'm glad they did. Would be a shame for X to fight so hard for peace just for him to become the next thing to try and destroy/control it.

Sure, he lost Zero in X1 but he vowed a promise to protect humanity and reploids from mavericks And considering the X-Hunters appeared, this is during X2 where X is carrying on the Maverick Hunter job, protecting the peace. I doubt this is after the Zero fight since you fight all three X-Hunters before Sigma

However, an series if Elf Wars games would be awesome, especially the oenultimate one where we start as X then become Copy X and get to play and experience his rise to power... The potential...
