FIREWOOD BAGS VS BUNDLES What Sells Better? The Results!

- The results are in for our sales test plus, we test a smokeless firepit next to our traditional fire pit. Burning identical wood in each then adding some green maple to truly test the smoke reduction of the smokeless pit. We discuss the pros and cons of the newer smokeless pits and traditional pits including a key safety feature. Later in the video Megan will also update you on our firewood bags vs bundles sales experiment. The results from the sales test were not what I expected. Back to the smokeless pit we tested I’d say overall the London Sunshine smokeless firepit seems to be decent quality. One drawback is that the ash pan was still empty after our fire and I Had to dump the ash from the pit as I feel the holes are too small to be effective.

Thanks Jerry, appreciate the feedback!
Found a bit out today. The Knights of Columbus put split wood at our store at gas pump station. Helps them with their charity, I guess A LOT.. It started from me, "Can you believe people buy this?". I guess they work hard at it, (they have the shrink wrap machine) and it helps them with their mission. Talking to cook at work, who's a good guy.
That’s awesome. We went to the Hoosier Firewood Hysteria this year and I bet we all split over 30 cord of wood for the veterans in one day. It was a lot of work but they definitely appreciated it!
That's a great comparison between the smokeless pit and the traditional. I could not believe the difference in the fire. Great video you two.
Thanks Bobby, I couldn’t believe it either.
Great comparison on the fire pits. I’m like you I didn’t get all the hype on these new pits but I’m starting too see some benefits because of vids like this. Shocked on the bags Vs wrapped bundle results. In our area people like the bags better🤷♂️ 👍🏻👍🏻🇺🇸
Thanks Todd, it’s crazy how much different one location Vs another can be. I thought the test would be fairly even but it wasn’t even close.
That is such a bummer about your little niece. I hope she recovers okay. What a cool firepit. I had never heard of a smokeless firepit and that one seems to work super well. That is great to know about the bundles versus bags. I like you, was really surprised at the outcome and I am sure that Megan is right that the bags would be much more difficult to work with. Great job with the video. I hope your family has a great day!
Thank you Steve. Our niece is doing good and is through the worst of it. She still has a ways to go but is back being the ball of energy she is!
Really sorry to hear about your nieces' accident!! I bring my Solo Bonfire under cover after each use as rain does make a sludge and is harder to clean. Thanks for adding some green unseasoned pieces as a test.
Thanks Obie, she is doing much better now! We definitely plan on keeping this pit covered or under cover.
Heath and Rachel thanks for doing the comparison. If marketed right it can help out your firewood sales.
Thanks Troy, o agree and we are figuring out our marketing and sales for these pits.
Nice comparison. I bought each of my three sons a Solo Bonfire for Christmas 2 years ago and they love them. I definitely think we will see a lot more smokeless pits on the market. I’m thinking my off cuts (4”-12” pieces), could be split, bagged, and marketed for smokeless pits.
Dick, I didn’t really think all the hype was warranted but after trying this out first smokeless firepit experience and a lower priced pit I definitely see the draw now. More tests to come. I think figuring out the wood sales answer to these pits sooner rather than later will help wood sellers stay ahead!
Good feedback on the bags vs bundles. Also I have a solo Yukon. I try to let it die down some and then cover it with the metal cover if rain is predicted. With the Yukon I can also put in boiler style wood.
Thank you, the Yukon can definitely take some bigger pieces!
Great video guys. Never heard of London Sunshine, but I expect more brands to show up given the popularity of the smokeless fire pits. I would have thought 14" pieces would be perfect, but it looks like 12" may be the target.
Thank you, it does look like 12” might be the ticket. We have another stove to test and maybe add one or 2 more and then test different size/length splits to see what’s best.
Great comparison
Thank you Chris. I think I may have to re work the patio are to get rid of the old put or modify it to hold a smokeless pit after experiencing this.
Great fire pits, great for cramped camp sites. Megan, that was an interesting story about your friends mom and the firewood stands😅. Great content guys❤
Kenny
Thank you Kenny. We definitely didn’t expect to have the cops called lol. Hopefully we find her a new location soon. We were impressed by the quality of fire in the new pit.
Good information I thought about getting one them stoves. I probably just burn my scraps and cut offs with it. Nice have a fire in the fall.
Thanks Dan, we usually just burn our scraps but for the comparison we burned some of the better stuff!
Looks like the smokeless pit makes a great flame compared to your traditional pit! I’m surprised with the wood stand results in my stand the bags sell way more than the bundles. I think I’m going to rearrange my stand to see if it makes a difference. Great video team HWM👍🇺🇸💪
Jeremiah, I was shocked at how much quicker it took off and how much nicer it burned in the smokeless pit.
Good information thanks. I would have thought the bagged firewood, would have sold better as it looks more professional. In the UK it normally is sold in bags.
Honestly I thought it would be pretty even, but it wasn’t even close.
Great video. I like the comparison videos for sure. Now I rather the look of the traditional fire pit better. But that’s just me. Nothing wrong with the smokeless one, I’m more use to a normal looking fire I guess. Those smokeless pit are basically like new wood stoves. They burn the gases to produce more heat and lessen the emissions. Less smoke.
Surprised by the bag and bundle wood sales. Thought it would be about the same.
Have a nice Sunday.
Thanks Noel, I too figured the bags and bundles would be pretty close in sales. I also like the look of a traditional pit but the fire was much better in the smokeless pit. I also like the black powder coating instead of the all stainless look but we will see how it holds up.

Love the content keep it going!
Thank you, appreciate the feedback!
hi there interesting and fun facts , thanks john
Thanks for watching! Appreciate it!
I like a little smoke to keep some of the bugs away that new fire pit is really nice though great video
Thanks David, we had the Thermacell out to keep the bugs away. I was most impressed by the quality of fire in the new pit.
I believe selling points to some of the smokeless pits are what accessories that either come with them or can be purchased later. Some have a special ring that you put on top that can be used as a grill (like a griddle style).
I agree, it definitely seems to be a rapidly growing industry.
Man there’s nothing like a nice evening setting by a fire. Great comparison. Wonder about the durability of those pits. Just curious. Rachel glad you’re doing better girl. Good to see ya out and about. Y’all keep up the great work. Bruce in Wv!!!
Thank you Bruce. Hopefully the pit holds up as it definitely produces a nice fire! I was shocked at the difference between the two pits.
Thank you Bruce! Me too😊

I had Covid again about three weeks ago and it flat whooped my butt. Just now getting back to some sort of normalcy.
Glad you’re finally feeling better. I got it pretty bad a few years ago but have stayed clear since.
I would be interested in how the metal holds up after heated and reheated ,and you everyone will leave it set outside. Another great video 👍
Thank you, we are curious as well. The inside is stainless steal but that too can rust under some conditions. Time will tell.
So I build my own firewood, pokers for my customers and for me I use some rebar and make that a point and weld a Nother piece of rebar to make a barb then find a oak, maple, walnut size piece of natural wood that’s a dowel rod size and attach it to the other end
Lucas, that’s a great add on for customers! I may have to test my welding skills and whip a few up.
Great information on selling wood and the smokeless firepit!!! Does all the wood have to be 14"???? Stay Hydrated and Have a Safe Day
Thanks David, honestly I think 12” would be better. We will do a few more videos, we have at least one more pit to try, then we plan on trying different sized/length splits to see what works best overall.
Hi H.W.M .Nice looking fire pit but you would need a pick up load of wood to keep it going all night
Marcel, it will definitely burn through more wood than a traditional pit, but that’s a win for us firewood sellers!
Good video, keep it up
Thank you Mark, appreciate the feedback.
so if u didnt get it free would you still promote it . here in the uk we dont have outside fires but plenty of pople now have logburners installed or getting them installed . love your channel and just keep being your selves .its nice to see what people can do aswell as the firewood process
Thank you Paul. This is my first experience with a smokeless firepit. I plan on checking out a few more. I was definitely impressed with how it burned and it looks nice. I think the ash pan could be designed better, I had to dump the pit over to empty it the next day. As far as durability or how it compares to other pits time will tell.
Bummer about the stand eviction but very interesting results between the bags and bundles.
Tony, that it is but we will find something that works. I was surprised at the lip sided results myself.
Heath and Rachel will you be trying out the warm bond solo stove ❤😊😮
Todd, we definitely plan on testing a few more smokeless pits/ stoves out as well as figuring out what size wood fits the average pit the best!
I do 1 cu ft bundles with the bundler, shrink wrap, staples handles and math says it costs me $.40c per bundle. It takes me a long time.
I found bags cost $.50c per bundle but delivery for the bags eats into it bring it to around $.85c per bundle. I have been contemplating on buying 100 bags to test. Not sure if should raise the price by $.50c per bundle or eat the cost for testing purposes. The idea here is to try and spend less time bundling and dealing with the price increase. Thanks for the video!
Thank you. There are definitely pros and cons to each. The Wolfe Ridge bagging station definitely makes bags much quicker and easier than the bucket method we used. However bundles far out performed the bags in this test.
@@hardworkingmanoutdoors make sense they see the wood easier and less of a mess to throw out
HAY GUYS, NICE TEST, I LIKE THE WAY THE SMOKELESS BURNS BUT, DID YOU KNOW YOU CAN INHANCE YOUR OLD FIRE PITT TO PERFORM THE SAME WAY??? YUP WITH A SIMPLE INSERT, YOU CAN HAVE A SMOKELESS FIRE. NOW THE SAFETY THING IS A LIL DIFFERENT. THAT'S SOMETHIN' YOUR GONNA HAVE TO FIGURE OUT ACCORDIN' TO YOUR NEEDS... STAY COOL FOLKS... PEACE FROM CREEL CHIHUAHUA, MEXICO...
Thank you, I have watched a few videos on building smokeless pits and may do it one of these days.
hehe, you can twist the plastic around a stick and make 'Martian tears', that's from an old Boy Scout! Dew, Dew!
Lol
Is the Hard Working Man going to take on Allen's Family Firewood Lion's Challenge?
John, not sure the Lions here do any fire wood. I am trying to set up a firewood day to help out a retired co worker/veteran who heats with wood and could use a hand. I like helping out directly when I can but also pitch in for organizations. Hopefully I can get time off work for the Hoosier Firewood Hysteria again this year to split for the Veteran’s Campground in Indiana.
Ventilated differently? That one looks like a rocket stove. Good video yall.
For sure, it burns great!
That smokeless pits burns rather sweet.
Alan, yes it does. We were shocked by the difference to be honest.
Just wondering if the pit is stainless steel or just polished. We had a pit that sat out in the yard and it burned out and rotted in about 3 years. I finally hauled it out of the yard a few days ago. Sorry to hear about your niece. That's painful for anyone but leaves scars for life. Stay safe.
Jimmy, thank you, my niece is doing pretty well considering. She is a trooper and is through the worst of it. As far as the pit goes the inside is 430 Stainless and the outside is powder coated. We will see how it holds up as we go. I have another stove to try out as well and may look to try a few more popular brands as we move along with the channel.
At my stand the bundles sell, the bags didn’t, I like the round one better than the square one ,👍
Thanks Len, same with our stand.
Bags vs bundles. Maybe people just like being able to see the wood…
Definitely appears to.
Can you make a video of your daughter starting the log splitter?
Would be nice... 🙂
Megan is down to college for now but she’ll be back for breaks and summer.
👍👍
Thank you!
I wa t a smokeless fire pit.
I will always buy bundles over bags.
JB, they definitely seem to work great. I too prefer bundles.
What is the name of your Dotsy.
Her name is DD, we use her in the fall to help recover deer for hunters. She absolutely lives for tracking and recovering deer!
I myself would never buy wood in a bag.. I want to see what I am buying. Type of wood and if it's rotes or not.. I have talk to people in camp grounds that bought wood in a bag that when they open the bag it was almost all rotten wood.. Plus woods not so easy to get wood out of the bags and bags make way more garbage
I personally like bundles as well.
Why cut the wood so small? I use wood to heat my house and the bigger the pieces the longer it last
The smaller splits sell much better in our area. They dry quicker, produce a better flame in camp fires, and are easier to handle. For home heating wood we leave pieces a bit larger.
Hands down smokeless is much better fire.
Yes it was, I was impressed with the difference.
I got a big laugh out of the cops being called , sorry
Chris, we couldn’t believe she called the cops lol. We got it all ironed out but now need a new stand location.
The shorter poker would probably be great if you didn't build as big of a fire, l o l
Yes you’re probably right. Honestly I didn’t think the fire would burn that hot!
You've given us motivation for cooking outside. You also have a new sub from us. Nice to see your channel
Thank you! Appreciate the feedback and glad you enjoy the channel. I love cooking outside!
Welcome! Thanks for subscribing 😊
People like bundles because you can see what you're buying. Plus the bag is wasted. People are more environmentally conscious about garbage. A little plastic wrap seems to be a lot less waste. I would never buy a bag over a bundle just because I can see what's there.
Thank you for the feedback. I see the pros and cons to both. I think we’ll keep offering both in different situations.
@@hardworkingmanoutdoors ultimately you have to do what works in your area. I'm in Canada and have never seen a bag of wood for sale but if your customers are buying them, you must carry on
