Bolt cutters tested for efficiency cutting through 16 penny nail, deck screw, drill bit, and hex allen key. The cutting knives on the bolt cutters were evaluated for durability. All of the bolt cutters were tested until failure. My goal is to ALWAYS provide accurate and honest test results by avoiding outside pressure from manufacturers. Can you do full size bolt cutters? I use them quite often in my business for cutting open bundles of rebar. This is just a bit too much for 8 inch cutters but somehow wears out out full size bolt cutters far quicker than one would expect. Im about to have to replace my whole fleet so i would massivly appreciate your opinion as I check your channel before I buy any tool.

@@ProjectFarm If you move up to large two-handed bolt cutters, I suggest testing on a padlock shackle since that's one of the most common uses for them. Maybe get Masterlock padlocks and see if you can cut them as fast as the LockPickingLawyer can pick them (about 4 seconds each). 😺😸😺

I have the exact Knipex cutters you tested, and they've cut just about everything. I've had them for around 8 years, and the durability amazes me.

I've been personally impressed by every piece of Knipex hand tools that I've used.
Can confirm this as well! I've had mine for years and use them for all kinds of stuff. Mine are the older regular grip model
I have been using my knipex daily for almost 5 years and they still look brand new. I get them as Christmas presents for all my friends. I'm a travelling service tech so I have to limit my toolbox to 50lbs to meet airline baggage requirements. Being able to have a tool like the knipex that can replace 3-4 others is great.

I'm a Knipex fan too. I've made hundreds, possibly thousands, of cuts through 1/8" stranded hardened steel cable with my mini bolt cutters, and the jaws look barely used.
All of my pliers are Knipex, with the exception of a Japanese specialty pliers.
I travel but no airlines, hence a tool bag well beyond 50 pounds
I am looking for a hand tool that will go through tire braiding wrapped around axles and brakes due to tire blow outs.
I've had those Knipex cutters for over 13 years or maybe longer. There was no competition at the time. When cutting, I put the item as far in as it can go, I push down till it makes a dent and then slide the object closer to the pivot point if needed. It usually cuts very easily then. It isn't scientific though. I'm not saying it isn't cool, but sample size is too small to be relevant scientifically. We have no idea what the deviation is with some of these tools within the exact same tool (same brand and model). Test 100 "identical" Knipex and how close would the results be? Now where in that distribution was this particular Knipex that was tested? We have no idea. How about for the other brands? Are the nails being cut each exactly the same? Of course not, they have variations too, even in the same box of nails. As far as TH-cam goes I love Project Farm, but it isn't science.

Best cast iron skillet.. caramelize some onions in each one first, wash out with only water then try cooking a egg..
Good non stick test
@@backyardprojects8153 The best way (I believe) to season a cast iron skillet is with peanut oil. A liberal but not excessive even coat to the whole pan, inside and out and then bake in an oven to carbonize the oil. Never clean the pan with soap or abrasives after use, just wipe clean with water and paper towels. Periodically repeat the seasoning process. Keep the pan coated with oil when stored.
All tests completely practice oriented, simple, easy to understand. Sometimes it's a somewhat subjective rating, but with his experience after years of testing, his is an expert opinion. Only criticism is, for non-native speakers he speaks very fast.
Conclusion: One-man universal expert test lab!

All my Klein tools are in my electrical toolbox and I have to say Klein are definitely top-shelf quality.
I love watching this stuff. Knipex is the plier brand for me. I replaced almost everything with Knipex and I'm sticking to it, even if another brand might be a tiny bit better. I've had two pliers fail before, and warranty was super nice. Went into a store that sells Knipex, handed them over, got new pliers right away. No receipt, no hassle.

KNIPEX actually makes a different "CoBolt" 8" version of this bolt cutter that is much nicer than the one tested, it has a notch and having owned both of them, the one with the notch design much nicer than the one lacking it. It is similar in price. Nice video as always!

i fully agree, i have the same cobolt 8" cutters and i've put some amazing force behind them and cut some hard metals with it, not so much as a dent on the blades, one of the best purchases i've made for a high quality tool
I like their warranty too. It's fair.
I think it's not so much that it's nicer, but rather you have that option to split thicker material into 2 steps. Without the notch is better for thinner materials
I'm impressed with Capri and the variety of tools they make. I have a torx socket set and a pair of welding pliers from them and love both! I'm glad to see they went toe-to-toe with Knipex! Both are great brands.

Thank you for another great video. For the money those Capri cutters was impressive. But the surprise was the Klein cutters. For a wire cutter to perform along side designated bolt cutters says alot about the durability and steel.
With all the tools he's destroys, I think it would be great to do a video on the comparison of different warranty claims from companies. Who actually honors their warranty, if you need the receipt, time to replace and so on.

I'm pretty sure Kline offers a lifetime warranty on their hand tools.
Except it might be considered fraud as you are not supposed to operate a hand tool in an hydraulic press, and seeking a replacement after publishing a video of how it was abused may not be the best thing to do.
@@AlessioSangalli That's true enough. However that separates some companies right there. I have certainly used tools in ways they were not intended and they were replaced even when being honest about the abuse.

Suggestion: A test of welding helmets. That's a thing you can't really test yourself unless you want to risk permanent eye damage. With your methodic style I'd love to see a comparison of welding helmets and if you can trust them with your eyesight. Great videos!
meh, a lincoln wont look like the miller will, unless you mean non auto darkening which they all use the same lenses.
All welding helmets protect your eyes from permanent damage, the protection is built in and passive, the darkening functionality serves only to allow you to see what you are doing, so what you would be looking for in a review is more like clarity, viewing angle, comfort, weight, ease of adjustment, battery life, stuff like that, not safety.
That could be something ttc could test
I have a few and tested them. I'm no pro at welding, so for me, the reaction time for autodarkening helps A LOT with sticking rods (I do stick welding). The old flip ups are ok if you're observing, helping etc, but I couldnt weld great with that. The Lincoln is ok...but man would I stick all the time. The puddle would also trigger the darkening. The miller though was great and made me improve my welding a lot. I can look in my vid to see the exact model if this helps. Like I said, Im self taught, but do want to make good welds, that look good too, so I learned this over the course of 2 years or so..(Im still a beginner lol, since I dont weld every day)
miller has good long-lasting headgear. all auto tint will flash you some, heavy production mig 300-400 amp you will hurt from the flash,, lightweight counts 10 hours a day. learn old school flip up. I only tig or tac weld with auto,,, Jackson and so many more are worn out in 3 months now, 25 years ago I could get 2 years out of a Jackson light weight big lens helmet now its miller time for me.

My dad's adage was "Don't break it, get a bigger hammer." As a farmer, he carried a pair of 8" Craftsman slip-joint pliers in his bibb overalls every day. They worked well for building barbed-wire fence and a thousand other things.

I got nothing but tools from Capri yesterday, and couldn’t be happier. Easily competing with my Knipex, Snap On and other name brand of tools.
Exactly. My box is mostly full of snap on and Matco but I’ve been slowly adding some capri as I catch good deals. I have never hesitated to grab the capris over the others. For the money they’re very tough to beat.

I never heard of Capri tools prior to your test. I am very, very impressed with them - $27 mini bolt cutter beat the $59 Knipex in most of the tests! I'm going to look into the brand!

The thing about knipex is the durability, they really are worth double the price if you can afford it

Would love to see a video on router bits for woodworking. A lot of brands come in cheap, but reviews say they dull while cutting hardwood. Some direct comparisons would be great, maybe eventually testing against countertop materials.

Note that the position of the bolt on the jaws has a lot to do with the force required at the handles to cut it. Jaws that open a tiny bit more may have a huge advantage.

I am a tig pipe welder. We cut 1/8” to 5/32 stainless filler wire hundreds of times a day. Knipix has always been the standard next to Klein’s but I’m going to order a set of capris now. Thank you.

Another great video. You are always super thorough and go above and beyond to make sure to isolate variables by making custom test jigs. The only critique I have is the small sample size, but let’s be honest these tests are so well done that I doubt there would be that much of a difference. Keep up the good work in 2022!

Something that I’ve been interested in getting is a Drill Bit Chuck for an Impact. I recently received a drill with a chuck but I was wondering in the usefulness of one still. Your videos have led me to purchasing products that I would normally purchase but I have the confidence in the product thanks to you. They are, as you would say, “Very Impressive!” Keep up the good work. I also really like that you don’t take sponsors and keep everything very objective.
Folks should take the test to failure with a grain of salt as you would never be able to squeeze these tools with this much force by hand. I would consider the tools that suffered less blade damage to have performed better even if the bodies of the cutters failed. These are hand tools, so the cutting force and blade damage are the most important criteria.
Indeed in all probability none of these tools would have cut the tested items using bare hands, but I have often clamped unsuitable sized cutters in my vice and slid a long tube over the other handle. These sized cutters could maybe be used to cut small nails, but are the size most people use to cut barbed wire and such softer metals.

@Bryan Gipe you are correct but I'm sure they were placed as deep as the design let them, some simply do not open much
@Bryan Gipe How deep into the jaws you can place a nail depends on jaws design. He even mentioned it in the video that due to the design of Knipex he couldn't slide the nail in as deep so they required a lot of force to cut.

Nice to see some German brands in the fold this time, especially NWS! I love my NWS-cutters, some of the best cutting edges I've ever come across in durability... But in the case of the design tested, they won't hold up to as much abuse as dedicated bolt cutters due to the design, they're made to be compact high leverage leverage Side cutters. They're great for what they are though.
A nicely hardened Allen key is harder or just as hard as most of those cutting edges, with the exception of NWS and Knipex perhaps.. By the way, NWS does makes actual proper bolt cutters, not high capacity Side cutters as the ones tested. The NWS 156-250 would have been the model of choice, and their smallest proper bolt cutters.

Never knew there were so many brands. I bought Knipex about 20 years ago. Use to cut wire, nails washers, trim metal parts. Never allen keys. The cutting edge is like new. They will not wear out in my lifetime here in Australia.

I was hoping to see the Crecent brand mini bolt cutters in the lineup. I've been using them for a while to cut springs for machining fixtures. Those Capri cutters might just be the next set I get if the Crecents ever crap out. Very in-depth review/testing as usual. Thanks for all you do!

Just thought of a awesome video idea that would also be something super helpful to have around the farm…testing the different brands of kinetic recovery ropes to see which is the best…they stretch 30% of their original length and then stretch back pulling the vehicle out of the mud/obstacle

I'm always very entertained and impressed by your test rigs, sometimes even more so than the performance of the tools tested. I've had to replace my father in law's sump pump every 3 or so years because of how poor their drainage is, despite most of the pumps having a 10 year lifespan warranty. They seem to burn out far quicker than advertised. I'd love to see you do a review on sump pumps, though I'm not entirely certain how you'd accomplish that. But after seeing many of your creative testing rigs, I'm sure you could!

I was actually quite surprised you included some side cutters, and even more surprised that they did as good as or better than some of the actual bolt cutters. I use Klein tools regularly, and will continue to use, and abuse them after watching this.

The position of the nail/deck screw in the jaws (near the hinge or closer to the nose) greatly influences the amount of force/leverage exerted on the cutting points of the jaws. The nail/screw position should have been uniform in all cutters between all tests.

No he did it correctly. In real life you put the nail as close to hinge as possible so if one's jaws don't open far enough it should lose points.

I like the idea to compare pliers or boltcutters by the force required to operate them. At the end of the day thats what matters for the user. However in this test it seemed to me that the distance between the pivot(s) and the nail varied quite a bit from one cutter to another. This would influence the results quite a bit.
I know you are as thorough as possible and I love your content because of that. I was just wondering if there were limiting factors involved like some jaws not opening far enough or the handles then opening too wide for the cutter to fit in the press?
I think he actually mentioned that specifically. For one of them the opening was too small and couldn’t get as close to the pivot point which effected the results. So he did at least mention that
If you look at it from the context of the nail / screw being the constant, it doesn't actually matter that there are differences in where they sit in the jaws as that's a design decision made by the manufacturers and it "will be what it will be." For example, a designer could make jaws that move perfectly parallel. In fact, that's exactly why there are different designs in these products. Some have a single pivot, some have multiple pivots, and a few others even have slides. They do this to either increase leverage or decrease the angle of the jaws when cutting.
What fwe said. If the difference in distance to the pivot was caused by a design decision in the tool itself then it’s perfectly fair to include that discrepancy in the results since being able to cut things is what these tools are made to do and if the jaws don’t open enough to do that effectively then it’s a worse tool for the job

The goal of his testing is to show which is the best for the user, not which is ultimately a stronger design. It's the workpiece tends to slip due to a design decision, the user will likely experience that during real world use. Not every use will applied ideally, and I think that's a fair representation.

After that $7 pair left me with a hand of blisters recently, since less than 1/4" annealed copper rod is tough stuff evidently, suppose I could consider an upgrade

Great test, I liked seeing the heavy duty Klein diagonal cutters in there. As mentioned in the comments, Knipex makes a recessed/notched version of these bolt cutters and I think they would have performed better allowing the work to be positioned closer to the pivot point.

Love your vids. I do have an issue with this one though.. In the first test, the distance that the nail is positioned in the jaws is a HUGE factor on the poundage needed to cut through the nail. To be fair, all of the tools should have been tested with the nail in the same exact place. Other than that, thank you for all your hard work on this stuff!
I’m quite sure he positioned the nails as close to the pivot point ad he possibly could. Some cutters simply don’t open as wide as others, and therefore can’t accept certain items as close to their pivot points.
As he mentioned at 11:54, some of the brands can’t accommodate the thing being cut as close to the pivot point as the others. That is part of the reason why the Capri and ARES bolt cutters performed so well
I noticed that when cutting the nails there was no "standard" distance between the last pivot point of the cutters to the nail. That would make a huge difference if near the Pivot point or far from it. IE 1:34 2:41 and 3:52 4:17

I noticed that as well. It would greatly affect the force needed to cut the workpiece. I think that for most users, it's the durability of the blade that's most important. You rarely need to take the tool to its physical limits, but you do want it to last.
It looked to me that he put the nail as far back as the jaws of the cutter would allow, which gives the maximum amount of leverage that particular tool can manage for that particular nail.
That seems like a perfectly fair way to conduct the test. Anything else would be artificially limiting the leverage of a particular tool.
@Thanny I agree, they were designed with the jaws only opening enough to get the nail that far in. If that design results in an inferior tool it will be reflected in the results and consumers should know about it.

Good job Tod! I have a request as I’ll soon be buying one: 10” portable tables saws. You can read comments all day long on the sellers website but nobody could rate them better than project farm. There’s lots to choose from with prices ranging from $200 to over $500. The field needs fleshing out! Would make for an interesting (and costly ) episode but would be well worth it.

I know my experience with the cheaper and used saws is that the motor moves when torqued and the blade makes the cut crooked.

I finally thought of one! It would be awesome if you tested various contractor bags or large trash bags. Which have the best puncture resistance, size/capacity, carrying weight, etc. I am always in the market for a good contractor bag!

I've been pleased with my $100 matco one. I miss my dad's old Craftsman from back in the day. Used to press bushings with it and a Cheater bar till it finally gave up. To be transparent I haven't tortured this one yet.
Fireball Tool has a video on strong vises, though it's not as high quality or comprehensive as Project Farm videos imo. May provide helpful information for you!

They get knipex for us at work. Very solid cutters. I never looked the brand up and hadn't heard of it before so assumed were a knock off brand from southeast Asia. Maybe they like us a little more than I thought.
Interesting test of how they hold up to abuse. I wonder which ones hold up best to long-term repeated use within the normal bounds; how dull or misaligned do they get.
Knipex would be what your looking for.
I got Doyles at Harbor Freight a couple of weeks ago and I'm pretty impressed so far.

I recall asking for this bolt cutter review. Thanks for doing it. I got the Knipex one, it’s quite good, but like you showcased, jaw opening isn’t that wide and might not get the best leverage, needs applying more force. I thought it would survive the Allen key test with bending, didn’t expect it to snap.
Btw, new video idea, metal or utility shear comparison? They are like scissors but much sharper and harder, tighter pivot point, can cut thinner sheet metals, plastic boards, etc.

I did notice that on some of the cheaper sets the nail/screw/drill bit didn't appear to be seated as far into the jaws as others.
I'm wondering if that might make a difference on the testing and if it's possible to make a rig that could compensate for the minor differences in jaw depth between the brands so the nails are fully seated in the back of the jaw to give maximum leverage.
I believe the depth of cut was determined by the jaws themselves.
I think that nail is fixed in place - it is pushed by jaws onto 2 screws driven into whole platform and thus fixed in place. Next pliers themselves are also fixed in position so the cut object couldn't move to much. So it appears, as written before, that it actually is determined by how much the jaws can open, and that indeed makes a difference. Please correct me if Im wrong😉
@@charlesangell_bulmtl Yeah.... if the jaws open wider, the tool will require less force to make the same cut on the same bolt. It looked to me like the cuts were all "as far in as the bolt could go" which is an apples to apples comparison of real world force for cutting the same item.
I bought the knipex after watching your test because I wanted the jaws to last. I just got to use them and they don’t disappoint. Thank you. Your tests are my favorite way to choose, because I can pick what matters to me.
