You know there are people you can hire to do that, right? Most responses are canned replies. Not saying he does that, but it's entirely possible to pay a service to comment canned replies to everyone.
He doesn’t lie at all, he actually means it, very consistent and he’s always making the next video while reading every comment. I can’t imagine half stuff I’ve bought because I’ve watched his videos to be sure get the best to the best product without getting scammed hard like other people do.

@@clion520 i don´t know , why english native speakers allways dropp the "K" if an "N" follows, but in german you pronounce the "K" in the beginning. Most native native german speakers pronounce the word like "Cnippex" - the emphasis goes not on the "i" but on the "p", while the company itself emphases the "i".
So officially its more sound like "Cneepex".

I have owned the Knipex Cobra presented here for about 40 years and have still not been able to break it. All the other Knipex pliers I own - there are many of them - have also never let me down.
My oldest Knipex was given to me by my grandfather and it has served well for a good 100 years.

100 years? Those Germans man... they’ve always been a cut above in engineering.
The Knipex brand name was registered first time in 1942, 80 years ago.
The Knipex brand was actually only registered in 1942.
This was necessary because Knipex wanted to enter the international market.
In fact, the company was founded in 1882.
I often wonder what would become of Germans if they were allowed to continue the quality they proved in industry but war destroyed much of their ability to do things they way they used to for local needs. I've been a fan of Knipex for nearly 15 years. There's a reason everyone copied their design. 8-10 years ago, they were the only pliers that looked like that. (Edit: in the USA, anyway) Great review, as always!
Yea i was wondering if the patent had run out or how come every other manufacturer has just straight up copied knipex. Or maybe it was never even patented.
Yeah i believe the patent ran out thats why everyone copied, they can copy all they want but almost no one can match the steel and casting quality of knipex
I've got a few Channelocks that are older and they just have pretty straight jaws. I'm usually quite happy with their performance. Not everything is a pipe.
I've had a set of old channel locks for many, many Moon! They have let me down a few times but not recently. I guess if I start having more issues I know what to buy.

Own a car repair shop, Knipex are, by far, the best pliers out there. If you want a plier that slips and rounds off bolts, use something else. Great video!

And boxo have proven to be quite good, at least in my experience
I might have to check them out, the Milwaukee pliers were absolute trash so I upgraded to the heavy duty Crescent (Black and orange with far more aggressive teeth) and they’ve been very good so far.

Another good thing about these are consistently good microscope shots, a lab grade freezer, and reliable (I think!) digital scales and other measuring devices! 👍🏼😎✌🏼

Knipex is a brand I have a lot of respect for. Glad to see that they did well in these tests.

I have used a set of Knipex slip joint pliers for 33 years. There is some slight wear from things I shouldn't have tried with them. They hold up extremely well. No corrosion issues with them either, and they've seen a lot of rain and grey water. If they still make them as well as they did back then, I'd highly recommend them.

I love my Knipex tools. I busted my hand open on a greasy stove and swore to myself that I would never used cheap Pliers ever again. I went out that day and replaced all of them with Knipex and never looked back. Great videos as always!

Lol, yes and "my" pliers won - Knipex for the win! I've always used Knipex as I know they'll do the job and they last for a very long time, although I've worn a few out over the years. lol
As a hopeless nostalgic and a proud Pennsylvanian, I LOVE Channellock Tools. But. I am seriously impressed with the Knipex and Gedore pliers, and saddened that the Channellocks didn't perform better. At least they held up well and aren't expensive. I still love them, and I'll keep owning and using them, but I'm fixing to add some Knipex and Gedore to the roster...

Irwin is a really decent tool brand for middle of cost, middle of quality tool range. It's kind of difficult to argue more expensive tools to them in some tool market segments in terms of cost/quality ratio. Especially with the way the tool industry is this day and age, with 99% of all tools being made in S.E.A. and China, even when legalease can allow some countries to say that "Made in" is made in their country, when it's not.

Irwin seems to be the equivalent to our UK brand that is Draper. Not the most expensive but shockingly good for the money.
I've got a 1/2" Draper ratchet that's about 17 years old and after releasing anything from trim bolts to head bolts and driveshaft nuts (which you really shouldn't do with a ratchet) it's still going strong.
I have a large and medium of there Irwin's for years and still holding up (not using for car mechanic or industrial use)

You should test the handles for chemical resistance against chemicals which are common in a shop like acetone, motor oil, gasoline, diesel, ATF and so on
My Knipex handles have survived 6 years of e85, gas, diesel, kero, etc no problem. All I can add lol
I like this idea, but only see acetone being a problem. As far as the metal handles, only alcohol could lead to rust of all the things you mentioned. The rubber bits are only for branding, everyone who knows anything knows that crap is useless if you are not working on electronics. Rubber = blisters

I have (2) sets of Knipex channel locks, that came with 3 each. They’ve been in daily use (especially the 10” & 12”) in our shop since 2017 and no issues with the grips from various chemicals/petroleums.
Also test the grips against solvent weld glue and their heat resistance for us plumbers/pipe fitters!
10 years in industry tells me this is an accurate set of tests. The Knipex pliers are the best hand tool you can buy, in my opinion/experience. The results of the Irwin are equally telling....they start strong but do not last. Save your money and get something better. The Doyle brand does seem like a nice budget alternative.
I agree. Everytime I need to break out the Cobras, I get a warm fuzzy feeling. I recently picked up their new slip joints and I think I have found a new favorite.

This is pretty cool. I found a set of knipex on track years ago and I kept them. 5 years and they still look and feel NEW. I use them every time I need pliers.

Me too! The Doyle brand has proven to be far superior than the Pittsburgh lineup at HF.
@@ProjectFarm Doyle brand is their premium Taiwanese brand. The Pittsburgh hand tools are their inexpensive Chinese line. Pittsburgh Pro is higher quality than the regular Pittsburgh stuff but is hit or miss depending on whether it was made in Taiwan or China.
All Doyle stuff I have bought has proven to be a good value.

I can't believe I watch these videos that are quite long, but amazingly informative for things I've never even thought of. I'm a tool guy, worked with my hands most of my life. I love this stuff.
BTW, my girlfriend doesn't understand, but she knows which purse matches which shoes...
Both Gedore as well as Knipex are highly regarded here in Germany, too. I’m not surprised they worked as well as they did.

I’ve got a knipex cobra that i love for plumbing.
This definitely reflects my own experience with knipex vs irwin vs channellock pliers. I started with a pair of channellocks because all the old guys used them, saw the knipex at menards one day and decided to try them out, and they worked fantastic, replaced all my channellocks with them. Then I saw the irwins and decided to give them a go, and within two months of daily use the teeth were all rounded out and didn't grab shit anymore. The knipex are still going strong ~6 years later

Knipex is the best performance professional grade brand (Made in Germany). Irwin is made in China, should I say more?
Irwin, like Craftsman, is a good "ONLY BUY USED" brand. Their old US-made tools tend to be perfectly good.

nobody mentioned that you can grip something with a pair of Knipex, let go of bottom handle, and it will not slip as long as you keep pressure on top handle.. Pretty handy....10 yr. old pair still going strong.

Very informative! I can't say I was surprised, though. There's a reason why every pliers type tool in my bag is a Knipex from wire cutters to diagonals to linemans to Cobras, all the way down to my newest favorites, the 7-1/4-in pliers wrench. As a tool geek (and a fan of Knipex...) I admit I was sitting forward in my chair and cheering as though I was watching the Olympics :D

I fell in love with the pliers wrench from knipex the first time I saw them several years ago. They are awesome as long as you don't need to tighten with too much force.
Bought a smooth jaw Knipex after watching a different TH-camr recommended the brand. The only complaint was that you need both hands to set the jaw opening. Bought a 2-pack of Irwin (serrated jaw) at Lowe's for HALF the price of the Knipex. I like the ratcheting adjustment of the Irwin more, lets me set the size one-handed.
oh man, those pliers wrenchs are amazing! I never knew thats what they are called, I always call them parallel grippers lol. I don't use them too often, but for one very specific task, they are hands down the absolute best (and sometimes only) tool for it. the only downside is they are a little hard to adjust. For normal stuff the quick adjust of the irwin is my favorite as well.
As soon as I saw the title I knew Knipex would win! The pliers wrench from them are awesome also!

Great stuff. Earlier this year I was talked into converting from my daily go-to pliers of many years in Channel Lock brand, to Knipex Cobra's, and it's unreal how much better they are. Absolutely worth the money. So much lighter, stronger, and easier to get in tough places. Can't imagine ever going back now, haha

You might want to check out the Irwin as well. The ratcheting mechanism is SUPER nice when you need to adjust the size and hold the wrench with the same hand. That's my only complaint of my Knipex, I need 2 hands to adjust the jaws. I got 2 of the Irwin (small/large) at Lowe's for half the price of my 1 Knipex (which I still love).

I don't own any, but seems the name keeps coming up in these reviews. I've never heard of Knipex before, but have so many tools I doubt I will be investing in them at my advanced age!

My dad and I have used both the Knipex and Channellock, I’ve noticed the Channellocks rely more heavily upon squeezing force instead of biting in when you rotate the pliers

I work in saltwater, the "Quick Adjust Slide Button" kind never last more than a week for us. They rust up too easily, with the old style you can bang them free and use them again, the speed adjust kind are just trashed. Outstanding video, as per usual.

I was just about to mention that, the style is called 87 03 XXX (offered in 125, 180, 250 and 300mm).
The're not as cheap as some others but should be worth a try for this specific application. Even the button is chrome plated so corrosion shouldn't be an issue.

I’m a heavy equipment mechanic and I ONLY buy knipex. I broke a pair of channellocks the first time I used them. They are definitely worth the money. Not only to the grip extremely hard, the build quality and durability is by far the best.
I prefer Knipex, but Bahco are often good also.
I also always want to have a cheap option of every tool available, for those time when they will be abused. Don't want to accidentally weld something to a pair of Knipex.
Edit: Generally prefer Kamasa-Tools over Bahco, but not sure if they are available globally. At work we use many small Lindström pliers, their flush cutting side cutters are amazing, but has a tendency to shatter if abused.

I agree. Money saving for most maybe but for a addict...I’ve got a two piece Irwin, ChannelLock set and a dangerously expensive Gedora. I’ve been tempted by the new SpeedGrip ChannelLocks too. They are so slick looking. I hear the SnapOn truck coming.

I've seen many tool reviews. Yours are the best. SUGGESTION: Oscillating multitools. There is a lot of heat here, but very little light. I've watched at least a half dozen reviews on these, but they range from "RAH, RAH! Brand Z Fanboy!" To non-systematic efforts, which, though they try, just are not what you do. Nobody appears to test them systematically as to longevity, usability, cutting ability, ease of handling, value for price, etc.

Im a Hikoki fan myself, but my multitool of choice is a Fein.
Went for the Hikoki, but the dealer advised my the Fein.
Held them side by side, and the feeling of the Fein won me over in an instant.
Much less vibration from the Fein.
So comfort wise the Fein easily wins over Hikoki, and with the danger of vibration damage to muscle/tissue/fingers and hands I do think that a test would be hard to do, and maybe should be focused on comfort/vibration and maybe not outright performance.

Thanks you for your efforts. Your tests are hands-on and I can second your result with the Knipex Cobra. My father worked in engineering and gave me my first tool kit when I was 14. I still have the "Kombizange", I think this is the European equivalent of the American lineman's pliers. Those are tools one buys for life. Recently I got me a Knipex "pliers wrench" after pondering quite a while about buying a new wrench set. It was the best investment ever, I must admit. Perhaps it might be of interest to you too, since it is a very intelligent solution which saves a lot of time and tool kit weight, simply by combination of a wrench with a plumber's pliers.

From having (ab)used a bunch of those pliers, in my opinion 2 tests are missing: the force required to strip the adjusting mechanism (or whatever fails first) and the force required to separate the rubber grips from the pliers.
Still a very comprehensive and useful video as always!

I refuse to work with those tongue and groove pliers like the channel lock one. With very little force they already skip and become very painfull. The type used by Klein tools is a bit better, but skips quite easily (mostly annoying when trying to use in hard to reach places. Can't remember getting injured by the Gedore and Knipex. Latest one to the collection is a Wiha automatic for ease of use, but not yet put it to hard labor.
This is the one video PF has done that pretty much everyone knew the results to beforehand.
Nothing like Knipex for Pliers.

The Doyle did well, but not on the very hard steel.
It's a lot cheaper in the US, but to be fair one has to mention that 43$ for the Knipex is a really inflated price, over here the standard dipped handle version costs 17.52€ (incl. 19% sales tax).

While I did expect Knipex to come out on top, the Doyle pliers were quite surprising. Not bad if you cannot afford Knipex or Gedore, which also performed well.
Cannot afford Knipex? Tool for long years is never too expensive. I was using my first COBRA at industry "everyday technical job" for 7 years and it is still in about 90% quality ;)

Why would a civilian who’s only going to use them a few times a year pay 3 times the cost when you can get similar, often better, performance for so much less? After all, the knipex didn’t win in all categories of testing.
Love the knipex ones, worth the cost.

Whether by a simple set-up, or complex, your tests seem to cut straight to the heart of the information that a person using the tested object as a work-day tool really needs, providing non-biased and extremally useful data as to which tool will serve the best. Something that the manufacturer's boasting almost never does.

nice video, enjoyed it a lot. I own 6 knipex channel lock pliers ranging from 12" to 7" and i swear by them, they don't slip like the other brands. I was impressed with the gedore. i may have to order one.

Another suggestion I can give is for flashlights, all with a specific battery size. Using the best rechargeable batteries for instance. I have a few Maglites, but there are so many brands (Streamlight, Olight, Nite core to name a few) to test which might make it difficult.

I generally don't buy the super fancy, expensive LED flashlights but I have a number of different flashlights, usually around $10 to $12, a few at $20, And the Achilles heel of almost all of them seems to be electrical connections that that are press fit or loosely crimped, which oxidize a little and fail intermittently. The Springs in the battery holders or battery compartment are usually crimped very loosely to little metal plittle metal plates and even if they appear to be gold plated the contact at those points is invariably a little bit loose. I solder the springs to the metal plates (It is much easier to do this before you experience any battery leakage no matter how minor) and eliminate the intermittent connections. Ditto for the cylindrical 3 battery holders, solder the springs to the contact plates for fewer problems.
@@somethingsomeonesaid6455 , the Achilles heel of most flashlights that use AA or AAA cells is battery leakage, and intermittent mechanical connections *by design* (even before leakage ocurs). First of all, one famous " copper top" brand is absolute crap nowadays. Secondly, batteries wired in series tend to leak when one battery is slightly different than the others (slightly used, slightly older, different batch, differing brands); It appears that the one battery with different characteristics or slightly lower voltage or different chemical makeup or at an increased stage of age-related degradation ends up functioning kind of like a resistor and overheats from the current of the other batteries passing through it. This phenomena is probably worse than anit is probably worse in any flashlight that has multiple modes such as high low and flashing because such flashlights are never truly off and invariably are passing a small amount of current through an integrated circuit's integrated circuit at all times which is how they remember what mode they were in when last switched on. A flashlight with a true mechanical on/off switch and is off switch and just one single mode of operation, or where it has a separate switch to select mode's, might not draw a current all the time and perhaps the batteries will be less prone to leaking. Any review or evaluation of a flashlight should include how easy it is to get inside of it to clean corrosion from battery leakage. The little slide-in plastic cylinders that hold 3 batteries are definitely more convenient in this regard. Note that the springs in those battery holders, and indeed the springs in almost all flashlights, are often loosely crimped in place and have a mechanical contact at that point which will oxidize and become intermittent, especially if there is any battery leakage. Soldering the springs to the thrust plates will usually eliminate this problem, and even if the flashlight undergoes battery leakage later on you will find it much easier to clean the springs and contacts and get the device functional again. (White vinegar will foam away the visible corrosion but a pencil eraser or fiberglass bristle "scratch brush" may be necessary to polish the contacts).
Anyway, do not mix battery brands or batches, and don't leave them inside a flashlight that is used only occasionally. If you have a good quality small soldering iron and good soldering skills, solder those springs! Clean the metal first,and the solder should flow more easily without you overheating and melting adjacent plastic.

I bought a cheap copy of the Channellock which didn't have undercut arc grooves. After pinching my fingers a few times as the jaws jumped out of the grooves I threw it away.

Yeah, that would be interesting. I would like to see torsion tests for cases where you have to reach nose first and rotate handle like a screwdriver. Low quality needle-nose pliers slip because the grip opens sideways.

I’ve got an old pair of Proto that I really should toss in the trash. If you squeeze those things very hard they will slip, which in the wrong situation could result in an injury. I really enjoy your channel sir👍🏻

I've had the same experience with Irwin. They were ok for a little while, then they'd let go on you at the worst time. Knipex pliers are my go-to set now. Almost indestructible.
Considering Proto is an expensive industrial brand that's terrible.
The proto probably has a lifetime warranty dude, try to turn on it in or check on their website anyway
My protos are holding strong. I'm the second generation to use them. Only downside is the plastic is wearing through. Knipex is better, but until these finally break or wear out, they are gonna sit in my tool bag.

@@ProjectFarm On the subject of graphs. A summary table would be great. Tool across the top, category down the side. Each score is listed, then a weighted score is shown at the bottom. For each category, you could color code each score in Red, yellow, green to show if it is the upper, middle, or bottom of it's range . So cleary the ones with more green would stand out. Weighting would help amplify or diminish the effect of a category.

For a long time I was not looking into what I thought of as high end expensive tools like knipex. Now I know better it was a big mistake and I have wasted quite a lot of money for things which did not really ever work. Not saying it always makes sense to buy high end but things like knipex are not actually expensive at all and nothing can really compare. They do make some junk as well, but those are more niche products.

Knipex makes really great tools for bolts and hardware etc. I build communication towers and Knipex is my favourite for that sort of thing, but for lineman pliers, and copper loppers, and other cutting tools I lean more towards Klein as my favourite...18 years in and my feelings on some tools have changed over the years, but that's where I stand at the moment.
I second this. I've been a Klein guy, but after really liking my knipex pliers I decided to try their diagonal cutters. Total junk. They broke within 2 months while I was cutting something that my kleins have no problem with. I went back to those kleins and have been abusing them daily for 5+ years and they still work great.
bahco make lot better tools than knipex newer can. i use only elektric tools knipex all other metal work tools and woodwork tools have lot better bahco.
Yep, totally agree. Inside wireman for twenty years, and all my tools are Klein except for the Knipex pliers. They are very well made and grip hard on everything.

Since you measured the width, it would also have been interesting to see the grip strength presented in terms of grip strength per inch of tool width. Or did you look at that in editing and decide that there wasn't a lot to be learned from that statistic?

Simple physics is why the Irwin brand was able to do the best job gripping with threaded rod, it failed with the very hard metals because they are cost-priced with materials. The others are slim because they are trying to conform to a relatively loose industry standard. Looks like the most common sizes are ~1/4-3/8" standard, ~7-10mm metric with Irwin being the only one close to 1/2" or almost 12.5mm.

Always use Channellock on the jobsite but Knipex are excellent well crafted tools. Their small copper pipe cutters are far superior over my reed or ridgid cutters by far!
I'm much more likely to use channel locks on site. I'm not hitting a pair of knipex with a hammer. Also something nostalgic. I have some knipex pliers, and they have their place.
