      However corsets when fitted properly can actually be more comfortable than bras- had a friend who wore one instead of a bra for most of high school and she swore by it. Knew another girl who did waist training for a while but got bored of it. debunking corsets: just like today most people "photoshoped" their photos back than. They didn't wear them as tight as we see on most photos (depicting known women, so of course they were photoshoped), the corset would be worn over a protective layer as not to cause skin irritation and wold be designed to support and carry the weight of the breasts on most of the whole upper body. They would also "break in" their newly purchased corsets much like we still do with high heels.
    Yes, cases of "extreme tight-lacers" sure existed but it was about as common as extreme plastic surgeries cases today. You have to keep in mind that corsets weren't worn to make you pretty but to support and hide your chest. Because I know a lot of you ladies out there don't want their Cs Ds and up cups just hanging there, making your daily tasks more difficult to accomplish.

      @@aximaysosa8885 even as a smaller chest person I can tell you that I can never properly adjust my bra to fit but not be uncomfortable, so I stick to no bra or sports bra most of the time but I know a few bigger chested girls who wore modern corsets under their prom dresses and were completely okay with the support and all.
      A lot of people think that "big" girls wear corsets to be more slim. Although it might also be a factor if I was plus size I really wouldn't want bra stripes digging into my flesh and going in the dress without bra probably wouldn't be an option.
      pretty much the only downside to corsets is the extra layer that creates extra heat

    Those corset photos are very misleading, for they are all edited. They would paint around the edges of the black background to make the waist smaller. Either way, tightlacing was just an Edwardian fad and it’s not really what corsets were for. They were more used as just an earlier form of the bra to provide structure and get a certain silhouette. Most Victorian women only reduced their east size by a couple of inches or not even at all if they had a working job where they had to move around a lot. While slim waists, were the beauty standard (as they still are), it just wasn’t practical to tightlace, which is why most women didn’t do it. I own an Edwardian corset and it really isn’t very uncomfortable. I wear it when I dress historically and I don’t pull it very tightly at all. In fact, the most uncomfortable thing about it is how hot it makes my torso to the point that I’m sweating a little. Anyway, I know people probably won’t see this comment anyway. I just wanted to prove that there are a lot of modern myths about corsetry, for women definitely weren’t “destroying their bodies.” Women didn’t view corsets as oppressive; they viewed them the same way modern women view bras: just a part of your underwear. That’s it.

      Don't know your history well do you? Those things were made to be tight. Women had fainting spells back then because of them. Part of the reason why men today think women are weak and should just stay at home.

    • @l.c.8475
      @l.c.8475 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@geophoenix8789 I do know my history thank you very much, the majority of women didn't have the luxury of staying home and doing nothing, and guess what, they were still wearing corsets, why else would the symington collections most popular corset be called "the pretty housemaid", corsets were part of being proper back then.
      Most women, especially working women weren't fainting, the fainting has two believed origins that have more proof than the corset theory,
      number one: they were literally surrounded by poisen, from the paint on their walls to the dyes of their dresses and the makeup on their faces, arsenic, lead and mercury were common ingredients for all of those back then, women who wore makeup and stayed indoors more were more susceptible than men to be affected by this
      Number two: men were making fun of women's fashion (which they were) and spreading such a myth, it only made it's way into popular literature after the fact, when most women had already ditched corsets, they were a writing cliche,
      in that case it's like someone in 100 years saying "(insert cliche about the early 21st century) causes guys to have excessive nosebleeds" because it's a common trope in anime
      Have you even worn a corset, and I don't mean one for waist training, that's a whole nother can of worms, corsets are super comfortable they support your back and bust, if you choose the right size and don't wear it against your bare skin,
      most of the silhouette was achieved by padding out, not so much just sinching in,
      there were a few crazy women tightlacing, but they were the exeption, not the norm, that's like saying every woman in this day and age has gone through a lot of surgery to look like the Kardashians

      @@l.c.8475 Corsets were for the upper class. Not the working class. So you are wrong there. The only working women wearing Corsets were hookers maybe. Corsets weren't as comfortable as you think. Modern Corsets may be comfortable and not as restricting now but in the old days they were very uncomfortable. One lady had enough of it and created the first bra. It was similar to a full slip. Much more comfortable than the stiff and restricting corsets which were often made from wood or whalebones.
      Lower class working women wouldn't wear a corset anyway because they would have been unable to move freely to do their work. And being for the upper class, not likely to be affordable.

    • @l.c.8475
      @l.c.8475 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@geophoenix8789 working women were wearing corsets, there are numerous examples of them wearing corsets, the pretty housemaid corset is literally an example of a cheap robust mass manufactured corset for easy movement that was advertised to and worn by servants, no upperclass lady would wear a corset with a name like that. There were breathable summer corsets and corsets for physical activity, if they had been such a torture devices, wouldn't women have used any excuse they could get to get out of wearing a corset?
      Modern corsets are way less comfortable, because they tend to be mostly stealboned and get their shape from that, as well as being mostly for waist training, whereas Victorian corsets were often boned with much more flexible wailbone, which molds to the body with heat on top of being shaped by quilting and cording, they are also cut to be more shapely than their modern counterparts,
      One lady reinvented* the bra in 1914, sure, but there are women that hate wearing a bra today, and that doesn't mean that all wellfitting bras are uncomfortable, it just means that bras aren't for everyone.
      and the argument that corsets are bad because they were using boning is also bullshit considering what bra wires are made of, and in a wellfitting bra those don't hurt either.
      * there is a 600 year old extant example of something that looks suspiciously like a bra that has been found in a castle in Austria, and shorts stays are also very similar to at least the first bras.

    The pictures they where shown from the 1890’s where heavily edited. Corsets where not usually tight laced woman still had things to do and most woman found them quite comfortable. The idea that corsets where harming woman came from men trying to discredit the only thing woman really had which was fashion. Most of the stereotypes we see about corsets come from men writing articles when women were started to fight for rights. And women who did tight lace where considered improper. For more information on corsets look at Karolina Zebrowska’s channel.

    Soooo many people think that the purpose of a corset is to slim the waist. It was meant to fit snuggly and give support to the bust and for the layers of skirts, and smooth out the figure. A few people tight-laced them, and a lot of pictures of women wearing a corset with a tiny waist were edited with paint, that's why the background surrounding the waist area is so often plain. I've been considering looking into a corset to fix my posture because I get back pains and often slouch while sitting without even noticing

    corsets werent actually that bad, the whole fainting thing was mostly because of the high amounts of lead in paint. and photos have been edited in the past to make those 19th century girls that slim :I

    Actually the corset was mainly for support as their dresses were so heavy. But as a thin waist was what was sought after (as it always had been) it was a way to get an even thinner waist and some took it to an extreme.

    The corset was not made just to make the waist small it gave great back support and bust support wearing it tight so you could not breathe was not normal only some women did that moat the corset was a support item but helped the waist look small too the pettie coats they wore (the underskirts) in volume helped the waist look smaller in comparison

    They were a little wrong about the corset, bernadette banner has a comprehensive video about it, but essentially yes there were some people (a small number) who did waist training to achieve a wasp waist but for the most part the corsets were there for shape and posture and they could breathe easily.

    I remember my mom telling me about bullet bras in the 50s and 60s. She said they were extremely uncomfortable. I just can't imagine trying to hug someone in one of those. You could hurt somebody. 😂
    I have to say that it was nice to see Koreans participating in body positivity. I was told by a friend that lived there for several years to teach that it was pretty common to hear a fat joke directly aimed at someone. And usually these people just laugh along uncomfortably and put up with it.

    About those old pictures with corsets, corsets where not those torture devices people think they were. Also some of these extreme photos might be photoshopped (yes they already did that in the past) If the background is black they could have easily drawn some extra black around the waist to make it even more tinier.

    Fashion history nerd here, corsets were not uncomfortable. Worn correctly they were supposedly very comfortable and people who history bound (like Disney bounders or cosplayers) have made lots of videos about it on TH-cam! Corsets were not tight laced so the wearer couldn’t breath (like movies such as the Pirates of the Caribbean tend to portray/that’s just for dramatic effect) Since these women wore multiple layers of heavy skirts and/or metal hoop skirts, the corsets were designed to take the weight off and evenly distribute it so the weight were not just on the hips and back. Also many pictures of those ridiculously skinny women were edited in some way, sometimes by cleverly painting over them.

    Just saying for those who are in the comments. Corsets where not all tight laced but instead structured to look like it was. The black and white photos they looked at btw have a super high probability of being edited (yes editing photos have existed for years before technology!) I highly suggest looking into some info regarding this!! Very interesting.

    Fun fact about corsets. Women wore them not for the shape they gave, but often for support. A corset went along the entire torso, making it impossible for the back to bend and helped the lady keep a straight posture. This would be why when a woman dropped something like a napkin or book, a man would pick it up for them. Not only was it gentlemanly, but women couldn’t bend their backs to pick up the dropped object themselves.

  • @laoaidan2400
    @laoaidan2400 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    About the corsets, there’s no evidence that they did any damage to ribs like breaking them or crushing organs (corpses from that time period were dug up and none of them exhibited broken runs from corsets). Some women still wear corsets today, sometimes for medical reasons, and there are videos of women who perform ordinary daily tasks while wearing one and don’t have any trouble with it.
    The reason corsets might be uncomfortable at first is because they’re like ballet shoes and need to be broken in to conform to a woman’s unique shape and properly support and distribute her weight evenly, especially the weight of old clothes since there were so many layers that dresses were heavy, and were closely tailored to fit her properly.
    Waists were never that small in the 1880s or 1890s, those black and white images were likely photoshopped in the modern era and corsets arent as dangerous as theyre depicted to be.
    Tldr; im just here to spread some knowledge on corsets that i know for some weird reason. Fun fact: men also used to wear corsets to make themselves appear slender, because being slim waisted was the beauty standard at the time

  • @aldergreen
    @aldergreen 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    The corset wore in 1800s are not always tight laced! All women wore corsets which were just as tight as a normal bra. The purpose of the corset was not to have a slim waist (which was searched by high classes and only during events), but just substain and mantain a good posture! They were used just as we use normal bras!
    TIGHT LACING WAS NOT THE NORM!
    (Search for Bernadette Banner's video, she explains everything with historical accuracy and proper sources!)

    corset photos from the past are often doctored! many of the thin waists we see are on simple backgrounds where they'd just color over it to slim the figure. but, as you can see in the profile of the girl wearing a corset, her stomach hasn't been squished as much as it'd lead you to believe!

    In case people don't know this, a lot of old photographs of women in corsets were photoshopped! The ability to alter photos has been around almost as long as photography!

  • @clarisacalderon9555
    @clarisacalderon9555 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    its interesting to see your reactions to the corsets....because you guys didn't realize those pictures were also a early for of image manipulation/photoshop. the lady's waists wouldn't be that skinny. and you can tell that someone actually thinned the waist line by drawing on the pictures because the waists are too crisp and the colors around the waists that are edited are like one color. usually dark or grey. I'm not a expert but it looked to me that all of those photos you looked at in regards to the corsets had actually been the ones that were altered. just a interesting fun fact for you guys :)

  • @sophisticatedtwat9160
    @sophisticatedtwat9160 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    It is very important to note that all women wore corsets, not just the rich ladies who just sat around. Working women wore it too, and the purpose was for it to provide structure to the clothes you wore, and it also worked to keep everything in place, like bras today. Most of the time they weren't laced tightly, it's a misconception. You could do most activities you can now wearing a modern bra.
    Also, all of those photos were painted over so the waist would look that tiny. 19th century Photoshop.
