    I played this guy in 2019 -- had the grace to compliment my play and switch into teaching mode. The best thing about playing ‘hustlers’ is the characters and stories you can get access to, if for whatever reason you build a connection. The energy they can give off is unique and their relationship with chess is a space of its own.

    • @Eagle7433
      @Eagle7433 3 ปีที่แล้ว +130

      Maybe it's part of the hustle. An edge is an edge no matter how big or small. A change from what you're used to seeing on the table over an over for many years vs someone who's used to playing with those slight changes can be a tiny edge. Even if the slightest thing disorients someone in the slightest way...it's still an edge.
      In the 80's there used to be parts of the Boston Garden hardwood floor that were warped and in such bad conditions that the ball would bounce funny in certain areas. They kept it that way cause the Celtic players all knew where those spots were and how to play on them. Also during some playoff games the A/C would mysteriously break down leaving temperatures soaring to the 100°s in the stadium.
      Minor changes in landscape and layout can effect game play in any sport at any capacity.

    I looked up the evaluation for this game move by move and at his first check she was at a -1 advantage, after a few moves he was +3 in advantage, but then at 8:05 the Rc3 move actually lost almost all of his advantage(+0.8) because she could have taken the pawn and he wouldn't have been able to attack with his pawn since it was pinned between the bottom rook and his king. But she moved her king so quickly after his rook move that she didn't see it and then his advantage went to +4.2
    Her position got progressively worse and then the 8:30 move(Ng6) put him way ahead at a +7.2 and then of course her rook blunder at the end.
    It's really interesting to see that 2 highly skilled players still don't make the "perfect" move almost every time and that they are still prone to making mistakes even when they're in good position

      When she did that last mistake, I was looking at the vulnerability of his king. She had a safe check on him with her knight which would have forced his move and she could have realistically taken piece(s) and the advantage. She seemed to interested in her rook instead. Rewind to @8:30. I saw that in real time too, not pausing or re-watching it. Granted, I might have lost before I made it that far.

    Botez had a great position here. But you can tell that she lost the plot when she started to eat up time on the clock. As for Russian Paul, he played like a typical stronger player - coming out of the opening worse, arguably technically lost, and then just overpowers through counter play when the weaker player starts getting nervous.

      I feel like it's a tough spot for her. she can't push a pawn on the queenside without white just closing the position in front of the king and shutting down her play there. and she is understandably reluctant to push pawns on the kingside because it makes her king vulnerable, even though that's where she has the pawn majority. I think in situations like this it's best to shuffle pieces, not spend a ton of time thinking, try to maybe get one of the rooks off the back rank so they can double more easily in future. I think a gm would actually reroute the knight. it looks cool in such a central square but it's dominated by the black bishop. I can't think where to send it to though. spending 60 seconds then pushing a pawn in front of her king is the worst of all worlds because you can't unpush the pawn.
