Legendary video, not liked by 790 owners, but right we got a serious honest owner of the both of them, and this video will help more futur owners of the 390 adv, as me for sure 🙏🏻
Hello, thank you for watching and commenting. IMHO the mid-sized bikes have a place, but they are not a complete upgrade for a bike like the 390. Man I am still angry we are not getting the 490 more and more as time goes on! - Frank
@@OneOldManRiding As a recent owner of the 390, I agree. For my slightly larger height, weight and dirt experience, a 490 R would have hit the spot perfectly.
Hello Steve, congratulations on the new bike! The power will be underwhelming for you, but it should get you where you want to go! Thank you for stopping by and commenting! - Frank
Great comparative video. I really agree with you. Very few riders will use all the 790/890 have to offer but could really push the 390 to its limits and really enjoy it. I didn't miss or need cruise control out east with all the twisty roads but I will miss it out west with the long straight stretches of roads... Monument Valley roads... Great video.
Hello Matt, I expect we will eventually see a CC install video on your channel! I am looking forward to you and the 390 being reunited, as well as your inevitable 390 / 700 opinions. - Frank
I've been an off-road and MX racer for 40 years and own the 890 and now adding the 390 A to my arsenal. I tell everyone lighter is better! Period! Solid review!
Thanks for this - nice to know how the 390 compares. I have a 390 and larger adv bikes (F850GSA, 1290SAS) but the 390 has a special feel that makes riding it effortless. My 390 is my main commuting bike now, too, because it's so easy to deal with in stop-and-go. If you keep both, consider using your 390 for commuting - it works great.
Good points. A few thoughts on the lower fuel tank. My reference points: I have the Norden Expedition and the Himalayan. I’ve owned a VStrom 1000 and ridden the KTM 790 adventure S, KLR, and Triumph Scrambler (and other ADV bikes). When I compare how other midsize ADV’s carry their weight, the Norden and KTM’s seem more balanced with the tanks down low. But you’re right. It’s still a lot of bike to manage. Love the 390 platform so much. 😁😁
Hello Mike, I think you hit the nail on the head. The lower tanks make the bikes more BALANCED than the others in its class. I should have used that word in the comparison! I keep seeing "It's so lite!" and I disagree, but as you said, its balanced. I think a better way to describe the 790/890/901 is "it's so well balanced." If you had a VStrom 1000 (I did as well) boy do you know what top-heavy feels like! The only bike that felt more top heavy when full was my FJR 1300. - Frank
I gotta say.. i have been thinking of letting go of my farkled 390 adv for a bigger t7...but after this, i'm keeping the 390! 25,000kms of lighweight, manageable and confidence inspiring fun!
Hello Armand, it's a great bike. Not perfect, but inexpensive and easy to farkle to suit. I will sell the 790 before the 390. ADV Matt bought a Tenere, and soon there will be a comparison video... Frank
The skid plate I put on is the aluminum KTM , but from what I've learned it's better to get the plastic one that reshapes itself when you hit it hard with the aluminum skid plate like I have if I bend it I'll have to take it off and straighten it out
Nice review! Reviewers often promote the idea that more HP, more suspension travel, and more electronics makes for a better MC, but as you point out that’s only true to the extent you’re able to use these features. I’m looking at the KTM 390 ADV and the 890 ADV standard, which makes this video especially relevant. Before watching I was probably 50:50 on these bikes, and after watching I’m more like 60:40 in favor of the 390. From reading comments on ADV pages on FB there seems to be a fair number of senior riders (65 yrs +) downsizing from 450+ lb , 80+ HP ADV bikes to the 390 and equivalent MC’s . If you have a video on modifications to your 390, I would greatly appreciate seeing it. Thanks!
Hello Rory, I agree, extra features are only important if the rider will, or can utilize them. The lower weight is far more important to me than the lost 790 R features. I will need to do a full mod video at some point. - Frank
Your timing making this video is good for me, I've been seriously considering putting my 390 to stock and selling everything to get a 890 (similar weight/configuration). But, every time I analyze the pros/cons of the 390 vs the 890, the points you articulated keep me on my 390. Like your 390, mine is far from stock, and I'm VERY happy with it off-road, but on road it's fine, but cruise control is a big comfort item that I need to invest in because I refuse to use a mechanical grip clamp. There will be further platform refinements and upgrades for each new model year of "Adventure 390" to look forward too, I think unless KTM can make a 450/500cc Adventure Bike, I will likely end up with a 890 in a few years, if I can ever get as many miles in as you. Thanks for the great comparison video, that answers a lot of questions I had about the key differences. And happy anniversary!
Hello Josh, IMHO I could be VERY happy with an 890 S model. The R is... more than I need. It's tough to get past just how pleased I am with the 390 though. I would be throwing my money at KTM/Bajaj if the 490 had come out. I have the Veridian Cruise CC sitting in a box right now... my 390 is going to be even better soon! - Frank
Really enjoyed your vid and comments about the 390 adv. Bought my 390 adv 2 years ago here in Colombia and its really doing a good job - it may be more versatile than you think. Tested 790/890 adv before but in some situations the 390 was far better and better to handle in really difficult terrain (very slippery or muddy rain forest roads or sand) Once one really knows how this bike reacts is big fun and with some changes (seats, spoked wheels.....) its always good enough to dare difficult terrain
Hello Luct, rode the Black Hills BDRX with ADV Matt two weeks ago with him on his Tuareg 660, rode the MABDR with him last year when he was on his 390. Reach out to him on Instagram, or one of his YT videos. The smile never leaves his face on his Tuareg. I wish I had gotten one instead of the 790 R. Sure it's less bike, but it's more bike than most mere mortals will ever use! - Frank
After Installing the cruise control on my 390, its definitely been a game changer. so helpful if you got to mess with the GPS, or phone, or grab a drink when riding!
I have the same question as Frank - which CC did you end up installing? I'm considering one, but 390 isn't really something I want to take on the interstate so not sure I would make good use of it.
@@LouisGiliberto Veridian cruise. why not, it does interstates perfectly fine. I've put about 7,000miles in the last 30 days doing mostly hwys and its adequate, unless you're always trying to go 80+ mph everywhere.
@@LookoutMoto Nice! That's one of the ones I'm looking at (Veridian). As for the interstate, while I do it, 70mph on the 390 is a bit taxing to me. I feel like a leaf getting blown around. Maybe it's something I just need to get more used to? Thanks for taking the time to reply - appreciate it!
490. Torquey twins but smooth high rev. Good suspension, no cutting corners components, light frame. Something like 490 adv R or even Rally. (for me tubeless wheel options) - what the dream looks like, and what we never get. 😂
Interesting to see it do 91-92 mph . I have a 80mph internal speed limit in vehicles and decided a while back I have no need or desire to go faster especially as I push 68 yrs old. Thanks for showing me what the 390 will do. No need for me to repeat on mine !
Hello, No need for those speeds AT ALL! I did want to show it could go fast should you want to. Essentially because so many folks sneer at the bike and say it's slow and boring. I do not agree. I usually stay at 70, unless passing. I had a close call one time three years ago where I was passing a truck, and he did not see me and I had to go onto the shoulder. I am concerned now, and I pass much as fast as I possibly can. Thank you for stopping by and commenting! - Frank
I added pipe, fuelX, dropped the resonator. But, I'm a recovering KLR rider and the 390 is FAR better in all ways, and faster. It is plenty fast for passing, commuting and or road trips 75mph all day long.
Traction control with my street tires on I got buried in the sand and low RPMs put your feet out for a little stabilization and it'll push you right out low RPMs
Thanks for the comparison. I added the Mccruise earlier this year before the veridiun came out. Block out at least 8 hours for installation unless you are a above average wrench. I agree that it is a game changer.
I've got a 2022 KTM 390 Adventure I love it I've got it past 105 mph with the Continental tires and then I went to the knobby tires to get the full off-road effect turned everything off it handles great but you really don't need the Nobbies turn on the traction control lower the pressure on your tires and you'll be just fine traction control has got me out of five situations what the tires that came on the bike the street tires
Hello Rodney, thats faster than I have been able to get my 390! I was recently stuck in the some mid in South Dakota on the 790, thankfully MTC controlled the tire, and I crawled out. The Motoz tire looked like a slick from the thick mud. - Frank
On my 390 KTM that windshield doesn't do nothing for me so I'm going to laminate it and make it completely black that way it'll work as a sun shield for the screen
Hello, there are absolutely people who will thrash a 790 R, 890 R, and a 901 like a dirt bike. I know exactly two of them myself. I know another 50+ riders, many of which ride KTM 350/500s, and ride them hard. But the skillset to ride the big bikes like that is very uncommon in my experience. - Frank
Very good and informative video. I fell in love with my 390 in first minute I tried it maybe 20 days ago. Gentlemen that let me test it sold it to me, and now I am slowly watching what additional equipment to buy. Before that I wished for 790 but like you said I would never use that power and tech. Also riding height for me on 390 is addictive.
You have had some amazing adventures on the 390. You certainly have made it your creation. I personally enjoy the differences between my DR and GSX-S. The weight difference is a factor for sure. Some variety is good I think.
Hello Rob, I absolutely understand that owning more than one bike is a serious financial commitment, but if you can do it... it has many benefits. I was an ADV and FZ1 guy for years. Your two bikes provide two very different, and both wonderful, experiences. A fine choice, I think. - Frank
There is a lot to be said for weight, but the 790 has some other niceties you also mentioned (cruise control stood out). Your closing comments are very important. Now that you already own both, do you think you’ll keep both bikes?
Hello Andrew, I am waiting for two pieces of information to make that decision: 1: How well does the aftermarket CC work on the 390 2: Does the 790 leave me feeling much better after the long miles to SD, than similar miles on the 390.
@@OneOldManRiding Will be interesting to hear the comparison and the outcome. Even with the Ergo seat the 390 starts hurting after about 2 hours. I also have the 1290 SAS but I can't fairly compare that to my 390 because the SAS I'm using for on-road touring only.
On your 390 Adventure if it's hooked up to a computer there's different settings there's like Highway Sport and then when you take the seat off it should tell you on the settings for the dampening and the rebound depending on the style of writing you're doing I found that out
I put on Nobbies with those you don't need traction control but with my 8020 Continentals all I had to do was lower the pressure those tires handle good too in the sand never had a problem with them
Hello Greg, I bought the 390 with real concerns about reliability. However, it's treats me well. It broke down exactky once since 2020, when the third party fuel controller I installed failed and had to eb replaced. Thank you for stopping by and commenting! - Frank
I've tested the transalp 750 last month (the European one with more than 90hp), I was very impressed… yesterday I tested the 390 adventure, and loved the bike even more, not as Powerful, yes, but powerful enough and lighter, felt more premium somehow, and better for 50/50 on/off road
What an interesting review!!! I had the same impression when I got on the 390 at my dealer. I felt more comfortable on my 1250GS!!! Where in Eastern TN? Johnson City area??
Hello, I am just outside of Newport. An hour from JC? IMHO there is a place, and a rider for every motorcycle. I have never gotten on a bike I did not enjoy riding, from a Honda 90 as a kid, to the GSA 1250 my buddy Dave owns last year in South Dakota. - Frank
My 2022 KTM 390 all I did was put a Leo Vince pipe on it will run faster than 105 it keeps climbing and climbing the speed on it I wasn't even at 10 grand going
Excellent video. This has been my dilemma. Is the 390 powerful enough for N.A. continent exploring? I like the lighter weight as I am not a hulk and older. I think also the 390 will due very good and allow me to explore gravel and dirt roads.
Hello, in my experience the bike is just big enough to put down the miles, and just lite enough to lift more than you want... It really hits the sweet spot for me. Even the new "lite" ADV bikes coming next year are all heavier. The truly lite ADV bike may be a thing of the past. - Frank
My 390 has a little over 7,000 Mi on it , what I did is took off all the heavy skid plate the stock one you'd be surprised how heavy they are I like mine up I put a pipe on it and mine will do more than 105 and at 1:05 it's at like 8 Grand and you can go to 10 grand it just keeps climbing and climbing in 6th Gear
Great video! I am shopping for a new bike after a long family/job break. The 390 seems like a sweet spot. I am looking to tour Forrest roads and some BDRs. The 390 is high on my list. I was considering the KLR but rode a friends and it seemed like a heavy beast. Anyhow how would the 390 compare to the standard 790 (non R) ?
Just watched this, thanks for a great comparison! You compared the power of both bikes and I got it, but what bothers me the most with my 390 is the vibrations. The extra power comes with a big price of vibrations and for long rides it’s a huge disadvantage. Will be happy to hear from you how strong are the vibrations on the 790 compared to the 390 and how significant the difference is for very long rides? This is the reason why I consider moving to the 790/890 and it will be awesome to learn from your experience.
Hello Alon, you sir are a Sage! Take a look at the opening of tomorrow's video. In the first twenty seconds I answer the vibration question! (Unless I screwed up editing!) Thank you for stopping by and commenting! - Frank
really curious, The 790 lbs dry weight is listed 417 lbs and has gas down low, the 390 listed at 380 lbs with gas high , that's a difference of only 37 lbs with half the power?
Hello Boby, the 390 is 385#, the 790R is 468# with fuel. Yes, much if the weight is low, but there is no hiding that much weight. I can feel it, especially if I ride the 390 for a few days. Example: I left my 390 in Tenessee a few weeks ago, and have been riding my 790 in New York. When I rode the 390 today, it felt CRAZY light. Thank you for stopping by and commenting! - Frank
Hello Luct, oh you can do much rougher offroad on a 790R. It glides over everything. Dangerously so. The suspension absorbs impacts, the good is the wheels do not deflect off rocks, the bad is you look down and realize you are doing almost 50mph up a rocky hill climb... The bike can do anything, me, I would get wrecked if a made a mistake at that speed! - Frank
When is the comparison video of a 390 Adv and a KLR? (Similar price - who is each bike targeted to?) Thank you for sharing the perspectives. I’ve had the opportunity to sit on a new 890 Adv and a 390 Adv next to each other. I have really wanted to buy a 390, but haven’t been able to get over how strange it feels. The 390 seems taller, wider, and has less ground clearance. In particular the seat was wide (seats can be changed) and was very uncomfortable. In contrast the 890 was very comfortable. A problem I see with KTM is that there isn’t anything in between the two… the 390 MSRP is $7399 (US) and the 890 Adv is nearly double that. 91km/hr awesome! 🤣 Nice video of Tennessee. You can easily see the differences from NY.
@@briangc1972 The brand is just too rare where I live. In general I do all my own bike maintenance. My understanding of Aprilia is that they have a service/wrench light that the dealer has to reset. KTMs service light can be reset at home. The nearest Aprilia dealer is about 2 hours away through nasty traffic in Bellevue, WA.
@@vtrack1963 It is just an information light. Unlike other brands, the engine is not limited by the factory during break-in. Aprilia gives a two year unlimited mileage warranty. I own a 390 ADV and the Taureg 660. The Tuareg is so much better in so many ways.
Hello Brian, The Tuareg is the bike I want. I only buy used, and I could not find a good deal on a used bike. I see them now of course! I expect in 2025 I will get a lightly used Tuareg. - Frank
I've ordered the Fuel X for my 390 Adv mostly because the lean surge is annoying when cruising at urban road speeds. Though I won't say no to a couple more HP or torques :)

Thank you for this. Im currently considering an "upgrade" to 790R after busting my 390A's Rear shock. How about Off-Road? What is the difference, suspension?
Offroad suspension on the 790R is a gift! Tons of fun. But you have to ride harder than I should be to need it. Thank you for stopping by and commenting! - Frank
Hi! I'm currently in the market to replace my V-Strom 650 because even though it is practical and fun, it's not Funnnnn... And so far the lighter KTM 390 seems like a sensible choice. What would you say?
I owned a VStrom 1000, I know the 650 is lighter, but not by much. The 390 is much slower, but IMHO more fun. Thank you for stopping by and commenting! - Frank
Hello Dan, the 390 is just as tall as a KLR650, though it is a tighter fit, if that makes any sense. It's a fatser bike, which is nice, and close to 100# less weight. - Frank
Hello Rodney, I really like the skidplate. It certainly is heavy, but I frequently use it and have every confidence that it's protecting the bike. - Frank
Just add one Critical Perspective. LONG DISTANCE COMFORT. To be honest, I can’t personally understand why people caring Cruise Control so much... but anyway. (maybe American thing with long straight road with less people? I’m in SoCal so,,,😅) In reality, this factor pretty much explains why GS 1250 is still the best seller for margin to others, and the KTM690 enduro seems almost a unicorn, but no one buys it. (I had one 😂) 390’s weakest point is inherent. Going at 65mph on 400cc / 700cc / 1290cc is a very different story. That’s why Honda has a Goldwing when they have the world’s best mid-size engine. (Watch the Dakar this year?) And It’s also why Honda doesn't try to make smaller ADV bikes than Transalp.
Hello Rodney, the 790? It handles like a large dirtbike. The suspension is amazing. That said, the reality is that it's a heavy bike, and flying up rocky hills in South Dakota, I was wondering how bad things could go if I lost it... - Frank
ride an 890/790/901 pkg and a yamaha T7 or ktm 1090r or Africa twin back to back and tell me that lower center of gravity isnt a total game changer , when comparing it to the 390 a bike that is 100Lb's lighter to begin with , 1cyl vs multi-cyl , 43hp vs 105 , of course its not comparable , i actually owned an Africa twin and the 901 husky version at the same time and went back n forth , my son had a T7 and we swapped bike a few times , no way on earth you cant tell me the difference is not instantly felt when compared to comparable bikes
Hello, thanks for commenting. We all have different experiences, and all are valid. An AT and a 1090, (I have ridden multiple AT and toe 1090) are IMHO different weight classes. In it's weight class, the Tenere, even though lighter does feel heavier due to Yamaha's decision to place the fuel tank as high as the engineers could. 😏 That said, the 790 does not feel appreciably lighter than the Tuareg, which while it's got a low rank, is nowhere near as low as thw 790/890. My comments are based on my reading so many owner comments about how amazingly light the bike feels. I feel that's not the case. It feels second best in it's class, but IMHO does not feel light. It's well balanced with the fuel low, but it's not like you do not know you are pushing close to 500#. - Frank
I love my 390 but the lack of power is killing me. I live in a city that almost everywhere you go you have to hit the highway and when the bike is struggling to keep up at traffic speed like 80 MPH and the vibration coming from the handle bar and your seat makes you feel like you are inside a heavy metal band speaker, it is not comfortable at all.
I think veridian cruise makes the best and cheapest cruise control for the 390, it uses a 890 switchgear with some custom electronics Im thinking about trading the 390 for a tuareg 660 for that twin cylinder smoothness, but then maybe I'd br disappointed in the weight offroad... its all pros and cons ig
Hello, I have to agree with you. The Veridian product looks as close to OEM fitment we will see. I really like the Tuareg 660. With crash bars and farkles the weight climbs to 500# really fast, just like the 790/700/901 - Frank
I have the KTM390 Adv and the Aprilia Taureg 660. For on road, the Taureg 660 is 10 times better in every way, power, comfort, brakes, suspension, steering, handling, etc.... For gravel roads, twin track ATV trails, again the Tuareg is 10 times better. The only place I find the 390 is better is slow tight technical single track or extreme rocky trails where dabbing a foot is necessary. I'm 5'7" with 30" inseam, so the factory height is a big issue. BUT, I just bought the 30mm lowering link (have not yet installed it) after seeing several videos of other vertically challenged riders who installed the link. If you are 5'10" or taller, the Taureg will be a welcome upgrade.
@@briangc1972 I have the 390 adv and would like to switch to Aprlia Taureg 660. I'm trying to understand your comment that "The only place I find the 390 is better is slow tight technical single track or extreme rocky trails where dabbing a foot is necessary." the 390's seat height is more than the Tuareg 660 so I would think that it will be easier to put the foot down with the Tuareg 660 when needed, no? As I like doing single tracks and rocky trails every now and than, I'm interested to know which one will be better? the 390 / Tuareg 660 (I'm 5'11") In these off road condition. The Tuareg 660 and 790R have way better suspensions for off roads but on the other hand, they both weight more than the 390. 🤔
@@razst1 I own both the 390 ADV and the Tuareg 660. I can flat foot both feet on the 390. I can not flat foot on the Tuareg 660. Both bikes have the proper springs for my weight and sag is properly adjusted on both. My 390 suspension with aftermarket fork cartridges and a HyperPro shock is as good as any OEM suspension on the more expensive bikes. I learned long ago that upgrading the suspension is worth every penny and it should be done immediately.

Hi Frank, How would a Versys 650 or Vstrom 650 compare to these bikes for sport touring putting down some highway miles and backroads. Would they be smoother and more stable on the highway? I have the Versys x300 and it great on back roads and has been a great first bike for me but past 80 it's slow climbing and has very high revving engine. I've put about 4000 miles on it and will looking to get a bigger bike for a more comfortable rider triangle and ability to put down some highway miles. I'd like a Versys 1000 but my friend said to work my way up.
Hope you don't mind me chiming in, but I happen to own a Versey 650 and a V Strom 1000xt. Adventure. For sport touring use, either 650 would be a great choice. The Versey, with its shorter wheelbase, fully adjustable suspension and 17" front wheel, will be the sportier of the two bikes. The V Strom is physically larger, has a longer wheelbase and 19" front wheel. It will be the better bike for touring, and is also capable of doing dirt and gravel roads. Reliability is great on both, but I would give the win to the Suzuki. I routinely see V Strom's on the forums with 100,000+ miles. The KTM 790/890 are awesome high performance machines. The KTM 790 is capable of out performing my 1000. For everyday riding, both the Suzuki and Kawasaki are more practical and economical.
Hello Jim, I agree with everything elitetileandstone said below. My experience is owning a 2014 Versys 650, and a 2014 VStrom 1000. My Versys was essentially an upright Ninja. Very smooth, very fun to ride aggressively. And with a seat that was not comfortable for long. IMHO a VStrom is more well-rounded, and just fine to ride any distance on the highway. I rode my 1000 across the country, but other than a few passes on the highway, I never used the extra HP of the 1000, and a 650 would have been just as good. - Frank
Hello Rodney, I agree. It was great to have the extra weight on the highway, but on trails, I am not able to use all the bike as to offer, but I am forced to deal with the weight! - Frank
Hello Rodney, that's my experience. The 790 is a beat, with what feels like unlimited power. I was riding unsafely offroad this season. It's wonderful... but I could see problems if you're not an amazing rider (And I am not!) - Frank
Hello Rodney, it has plenty to get you one HELL of a ticket! Can the 790 go faster? Of course, but the 390 allows me to speed as fast as I want to. - Frank

Hello Matt, I expect we will eventually see a CC install video on your channel! I am looking forward to you and the 390 being reunited, as well as your inevitable 390 / 700 opinions. - Frank
unstressed engines usually last longer tho ?
I've been an off-road and MX racer for 40 years and own the 890 and now adding the 390 A to my arsenal. I tell everyone lighter is better! Period! Solid review!

Thanks for this - nice to know how the 390 compares. I have a 390 and larger adv bikes (F850GSA, 1290SAS) but the 390 has a special feel that makes riding it effortless. My 390 is my main commuting bike now, too, because it's so easy to deal with in stop-and-go. If you keep both, consider using your 390 for commuting - it works great.
Hello Louis, it really is a good size for commuting. Thats what Kyle Bradshaw is doing with his now, when not testing tires! - Frank
I think a better way to describe the 790/890/901 is "it's so well balanced."
If you had a VStrom 1000 (I did as well) boy do you know what top-heavy feels like!
- Frank
please do the mod video!

- Frank
@@OneOldManRidingI think you'll like it, just need the nod from you that it's worth the money. Cheers!
Hello Martin, you can really do a lot on it. Best tool? nope. Great tool though! Thank you for stopping by and commenting! - Frank
Really useful video, thanks man. I am considering selling my 390 and buying a 790, but generally I prefer mid-weights. I am a little undecisive here
Hello Luct, rode the Black Hills BDRX with ADV Matt two weeks ago with him on his Tuareg 660, rode the MABDR with him last year when he was on his 390.
Hello Lookout, which model CC did you install? Thank you for stopping by! - Frank
I have the same question as Frank - which CC did you end up installing? I'm considering one, but 390 isn't really something I want to take on the interstate so not sure I would make good use of it.
@@OneOldManRidingI got the Veridian cruise. Spendy; yes, but worth it if you do any highway riding.
@@LouisGiliberto Veridian cruise. why not, it does interstates perfectly fine. I've put about 7,000miles in the last 30 days doing mostly hwys and its adequate, unless you're always trying to go 80+ mph everywhere.

490. Torquey twins but smooth high rev. Good suspension, no cutting corners components, light frame. Something like 490 adv R or even Rally. (for me tubeless wheel options)

- Frank
Its good to know that the speed is there if needed. I still marvel at it only being a single cylinder.
I added pipe, fuelX, dropped the resonator. But, I'm a recovering KLR rider and the 390 is FAR better in all ways, and faster. It is plenty fast for passing, commuting and or road trips 75mph all day long.
Hello Chuck, I agree on all counts. I do have lost the OEM exhaust and am running the Fuel X. - Frank
Salve. Posso sapere che scarico è e dove trovarlo?!? Grazie
Thanks for the review, I want to down size for back road riding just can"t decide 390 ADV, DR650 or a BMW GS650. All used.
Hello Steven, I do not believe you can go wrong with a 390 or a DR650. The weight of the GS650, I think, puts it in a different class. - Frank
Hello Neal, I was close to buying the Mccruise, but then I got the 790R. I just got the Veridian and will have it installed for spring! - Frank

- Frank
On my 390 KTM that windshield doesn't do nothing for me so I'm going to laminate it and make it completely black that way it'll work as a sun shield for the screen
your right about bit at the end , i tell people me riding my 901 with this set up is like giving Corvette's to drivers ed students its soo much better

Hello Andrew, I am waiting for two pieces of information to make that decision:
1: How well does the aftermarket CC work on the 390
2: Does the 790 leave me feeling much better after the long miles to SD, than similar miles on the 390.
@@OneOldManRiding Will be interesting to hear the comparison and the outcome. Even with the Ergo seat the 390 starts hurting after about 2 hours. I also have the 1290 SAS but I can't fairly compare that to my 390 because the SAS I'm using for on-road touring only.
After going 108 I backed off I got scared but it was a smooth ride
On your 390 Adventure if it's hooked up to a computer there's different settings there's like Highway Sport and then when you take the seat off it should tell you on the settings for the dampening and the rebound depending on the style of writing you're doing I found that out

This is the reason why I consider moving to the 790/890 and it will be awesome to learn from your experience.

really curious, The 790 lbs dry weight is listed 417 lbs and has gas down low, the 390 listed at 380 lbs with gas high , that's a difference of only 37 lbs with half the power?
Hello Boby, the 390 is 385#, the 790R is 468# with fuel. Yes, much if the weight is low, but there is no hiding that much weight. I can feel it, especially if I ride the 390 for a few days.
Example: I left my 390 in Tenessee a few weeks ago, and have been riding my 790 in New York. When I rode the 390 today, it felt CRAZY light. Thank you for stopping by and commenting! - Frank
Would you say you can offroad with the 790 comfortably? At least half as you could with the 390?
Hello Luct, oh you can do much rougher offroad on a 790R. It glides over everything. Dangerously so. The suspension absorbs impacts, the good is the wheels do not deflect off rocks, the bad is you look down and realize you are doing almost 50mph up a rocky hill climb...
The bike can do anything, me, I would get wrecked if a made a mistake at that speed! - Frank
When is the comparison video of a 390 Adv and a KLR? (Similar price - who is each bike targeted to?)
Thank you for sharing the perspectives.
Nice video of Tennessee. You can easily see the differences from NY.

You should look at the Aprilia Taureg 660.

I have a 2014 v strom 1000 and I want to downsize. I am wondering if the KTM 390 would be too small and I should get a KLR 650 instead.
Hello Dan, the 390 is just as tall as a KLR650, though it is a tighter fit, if that makes any sense. It's a fatser bike, which is nice, and close to 100# less weight. - Frank
And I lightened It Up by changing skid plates
Hello Rodney, I really like the skidplate. It certainly is heavy, but I frequently use it and have every confidence that it's protecting the bike. - Frank
Just add one Critical Perspective.
LONG DISTANCE COMFORT.
To be honest, I can’t personally understand why people caring Cruise Control so much... but anyway. (maybe American thing with long straight road with less people? I’m in SoCal so,,,😅)
In reality, this factor pretty much explains why GS 1250 is still the best seller for margin to others, and the KTM690 enduro seems almost a unicorn, but no one buys it. (I had one 😂)
390’s weakest point is inherent.

I wonder how good it handles in the dirt with everything turned off

ride an 890/790/901 pkg and a yamaha T7 or ktm 1090r or Africa twin back to back and tell me that lower center of gravity isnt a total game changer , when comparing it to the 390 a bike that is 100Lb's lighter to begin with , 1cyl vs multi-cyl , 43hp vs 105 , of course its not comparable , i actually owned an Africa twin and the 901 husky version at the same time and went back n forth , my son had a T7 and we swapped bike a few times , no way on earth you cant tell me the difference is not instantly felt when compared to comparable bikes
That said, the 790 does not feel appreciably lighter than the Tuareg, which while it's got a low rank, is nowhere near as low as thw 790/890.

I think veridian cruise makes the best and cheapest cruise control for the 390, it uses a 890 switchgear with some custom electronics
Im thinking about trading the 390 for a tuareg 660 for that twin cylinder smoothness, but then maybe I'd br disappointed in the weight offroad... its all pros and cons ig

My 390 suspension with aftermarket fork cartridges and a HyperPro shock is as good as any OEM suspension on the more expensive bikes. I learned long ago that upgrading the suspension is worth every penny and it should be done immediately.

Hi Frank,
How would a Versys 650 or Vstrom 650 compare to these bikes for sport touring putting down some highway miles and backroads.
I personally appreciate it when folks chime in! We all have varied experiences and opinions, please share yours! - Frank
- Frank
I thought about it but it's just too big of a bike for what I do
Hello Rodney, I agree. It was great to have the extra weight on the highway, but on trails, I am not able to use all the bike as to offer, but I am forced to deal with the weight! - Frank
I think the bikes bigger than a 390 are going to be just too much to handle in the dirt with everything turned off
Hello Rodney, that's my experience. The 790 is a beat, with what feels like unlimited power. I was riding unsafely offroad this season. It's wonderful... but I could see problems if you're not an amazing rider (And I am not!) - Frank
The 390 has a lot of top end
Hello Rodney, it has plenty to get you one HELL of a ticket! Can the 790 go faster? Of course, but the 390 allows me to speed as fast as I want to. - Frank
You have ridden that 390 everywhere but you have to love the extra power of the 790.
Hello Greg, the extra power is AMAZING! However, it's not that useful offroad, as you and Alessandro are the only guys, I know that would dare tap into it. It's there.... but using it could have really bad consequences for anyone who does not have a lifetime of dirt bike experience. I look forward to your opinion of the bike when we can meet up in the South again. Hopefully we will get a Bearded Grump review! - Frank
On the street I'm sure it handles good
Hello Rodney, I much prefer the 390 on the street. The handling is so much quicker. - Frank

Thank you so much for the kind words! I appreciate you stopping by! - Frank
I'f i'd have to chose between the ktm 790 or another bike i'd go with them bmw 1250gs or the new 1300gs.
Thank you for stopping by and commenting! - Frank
LOL you're not the only old man I'm 59
Hello Rodney, we are both young! I ran into a 79-year-old man on a 390 Adventure in Wisconsin. It helps to have a lite bike! - Frank
I don't care a lick about cruise control I've got it but don't use it!
Hello John, it's certainly not needed, and I have only owned two bikes with it, but I do really enjoy using it in the highway. - Frank
power to weight ratio\;]
Hello Jae, very true. That said, the 790 has WAY more power than I need, or use. Especially off-road! Thank you for stopping by and commenting! - Frank
@@OneOldManRiding my son gave me a chance to ride his for about 30 mins through some epic Oregon country twisties and for about 5 mins afterwards was convincing myself I needed a new bike! Nope but do ride the twin a little harder and love it more than ever. That said have been very interested in the 390 Enduro and may get it as a second bike. tkz for the VIDs\;]
LOL I've gone faster on my 390 then I ever have in a car LOL
Thats probably a good thing! I have not gone close to bike speed in a car. - Frank
Pointless.
Hello, and thank you for stopping by and commenting! - Frank
The 390 really isn't for experienced riders in my opinion, the 790 is superior with better suspension, chassis, brakes, and motor.
Hello Tony, I agree, mechanically, everything is better on my 790 Adventure R. However, there are tradeoffs.
Just a fun FYI: My 790 has had more mechanical issues in six months, than my 390 in three years. - Frank
It's always rainy, because it's a temperate rainforest.

I really like my 390. It does everything well enough. I'll be installing the Veridian Cruise this winter when I have it apart for valve service.
Hello Nate, I am just complaining because the last two years were much sunnier for us. 😉
Where are you located? I would love to films someone doing valves and the CC install! - Frank
@@OneOldManRiding just north of Chattanooga. I've done valve checks on a boxer GS, and on a Versys 650. But for some reason the 390 has me a little intimidated. And I've never had to actually change a shim.
