Interesting review, without a doubt the 790 and 890 Adventure are very capable bikes, I just cannot get over the looks, I think when you get off your bike or out of your car and glance back there should be wow over how great it looks, thank goodness my wife never looks back at me...
I made an error in the pricing section, I used an incorrect title and listed the Rally Pack instead of the Heated Grips. The Tech pack of course has the rally pack included in it. I was indicating the price including the parts I mentioned, so with the bike, tech pack and heated grips it would be £13,101
Just wanted to ask about the two seat positions, I’m 6,2 so need higher position, I hoped you would show both positions! Anyways loved the review many thanks
Great review 👍🏻 Would you think the 890 would be a good alternative to my Africa twin 2017? I’m in the market for a lighter bike, but don’t want to go down in hp or performance in long distance touring with overtaking and so on. I like to ride somehow fast and a little aggressive off road mostly gravel roads and TeT throughout Sweden but like longer distances too on road. I have dct today but I’m grown up on MX so manual especially with quickshifter sounds nice to me 😊
Got the 22 version and it has been brilliant - reliable, good & punchy on road, great off road (for the terrain it's designed for - I'm no Chris Birch) - Triumph was great but dull, T7 top heavy, Africa Twin bigger & heavier, Aprillia dealer / par network not great (two weeks to order a standard part from Italy minimum), BMW 850 just not very good, Ducati too tall for me. Demo mode fine - buy what you want - cars are the same a golf gti essentially just has ECU tweaked by vw over similar engined models etc
Have one since august, one thing i notest and remove, was the mirors, they send air direct to the helmet, if you put some low profile mirrors will help.
Thanks for the movie and a good summary! I would like to know your opinion on the vibration of this particular bike. What is your opinion? Any noticeable vibration on a handlebar, seat, or footpegs? Some say that even standard mirrors get blurry at particular speed. You also made a trip to Poland on 790... how was it? Have you encountered any fatigue, or hand numbs? Thanks a lot!
Not much vibration at all, nothing i wouldnt expect from any parallel twin. Nearly all bikes get blurry mirrors at some speed ;) but again never an issue that i noticed. The 790 didnt miss a beat on the trip (you can find the videos on my Tonys Tiny Tours playlist) no hand numbness at all
Another great review Tony. Good to hear that KTM have made improvents that make the new 890 a more complete package out of the box. Apart from the bodywork, I've addressed all the issues on my 2019 790 adventure - MRA screen with spoiler, re-upholstered seat, Nitron shock and Andreani fork cartridges. Also don't do that many miles on it, as I have a few other bikes including a couple of classics that I use for local fun rides, so can't really justify upgrading. If I was in the market for a new middleweight adventure bike, this would be a top contender, but I'd like to wait and see what the new BMW GS900 is like, with the reduced weight that looks promising.
I bought one this year & I LOVE this bike! Agile, nimble! I'm happy after Honda Africa twin dct 2021, which was a good road bike for me. It's good on roads and is very capable off-road. Actually I drove it on some local light enduro trails and had zero problems. I would never dare to do it on Africa Twin
Nice review Tony. Potentially looking to change my duke 890 next year (after 8000 trouble free ish miles). Most of my riding is scratching around the B and C roads of the Northants/Cambs and wondered if the Adventure has a slightly more forgiving ride than the Duke? Or would I miss the handling and ballistic pull of Track mode? Or should the SMT be on the agenda? Thanks
Sounds like the SMT might be a good choice. I did consider ‘supermotoing’ my 790 but it would cost too much! The Adventure has got a slightly plusher ride, but it’s not as sharp handling wise for sure
KTM made amazing motorcycles this years, 1190, 1290, 790 and now 890. But we, ktm thrue riders, still wait for the 990. Until then, your question is still valid. After, nobody will care about any question. If they will be able to make a 990 under 200 kg, with 120-130 ish.. hp, and similar lines, regarding of midgets protection ideas, it will be amazing. Meanwhyle, the Desert x is the closest one to the delicios 990 with almost similar specs. Good for the italians 👏👏👏
The 890 and Desert X have extremely similar specs with the 890 being even lighter on dry weight even, so what are you on about? Don't get me wrong a 990 could well work out, but then the Desert X has the same failings.
I’ve got the 2022 890 adventure and loving it, only two things not keen on the screen which I changed to MRA sports much better and soon to change are the standard Avon tyres. I got the tec pack in the price of the bike + Bluetooth. If I bought a newer model I would buy the quick shift first. Nice review! Soon done 19.000 kilometers with mine (identical to yours). Ordered mine with all software options quite as few hardware upgrades. Had very few issues with the bike. Blogged about all of it, plus likes/dislikes. There definitely are some dislikes, but despite that I think this model is, if not the best, then one of the best in the segment. Best of luck onwards with yours! :)
Great informed video. I have the 890 and love it - but the new one looks a lot better! Ref the demo mode argument - people have got to understand that value is not just in things that they can touch and feel, but also in software and services. They cost money to develop and businesses need to charge for them. With this model you only pay for it if you want it!
Have my 790 adventure R fully spect and lot of extras, give me 107 hp, love the machine, never had single little problem but the wide seat by tank area is killing my (so many times injured) body..... bet the new one has lots of smarter ways to make the machine even better, but also want to try something different, for now looking at Desert x or new upcoming 900 GS... nice review, keep up good job Tony!
Hi Tony, nice review. Thank you. I do however remember when the 890 first came out you mentioned at the time that you didn’t feel the need to upgrade. Is it the 23 spec bike that’s changed your mind with it’s midlife refresh? I’m also one who sits on the Im OK with having all the bells and whistles then paying for the ones you actually want. I guess that stems back to starting out on 70/80’s bikes where options wasn’t a big thing back then.
Very good review I’d say… I was looking for a KTM but reliability is very much appreciated here in Arizona where the temps and distances are far greater than in the UK… I’d love me a go on a KTM especially the 1090 R but it was too tall for me. If KTM took into consideration us shortstacks it’d be selling more of these haha. Now the main question: would you buy this over the Norden non expedition model?? Both are KTMs one in the home kit the other in away colors.. Cheers from Arizona 🫡🇺🇸🌵
No issues with reliability on this bike, and its much lower than the 1090 R. Yes I think i would pick this over the Norden, its that little bit lower in the seat and I like the looks of the new model too
@@mancavemoto well thank you. I guess with KTMs is the luck of the draw as they say… you may pick one that’s plagued with bugs and one with a solid immune system sort of speak😄 Cheers

Running hot, and putting out heat are different things. The engine runs pretty cool, its the positioning of the cat that is the minor issue. Catalytic converters have to work at a high temperature, thats the nature of the beast.
Great video, I'm happy to keep my 2020 790 however, I love it! Any chance I can get first dibs on your rebel x fairings please, if your selling of course?
I do like the changes KTM made to the 23' models over my 22'. My bike has been wonderful so far, I can't fault much except that condensation issue and my screen went totally black but that happened early on and it came back up when I turned the bike off to fuel and then started it up... so it didn't leave me stranded. (Not like the Pan America I had) I reported it on my next service, they looked at it. I think they did a flash and it hasn't happened since. The bike is a mile muncher considering the compact size. Yeah, the Pan Am and the 2018 1290 SA-R that I had will gobble up the road miles a bit better but then your stuck with a huge bike and the issues associated with that. Like you I dropped my 890 in the mud once and it was a bear to pick up, mainly because I couldn't get my footing in the snotty mud. Something to think about if a person rides off-road solo like I do 95% of the time. So, I bought a Husky 501 for that kind of thing. The purchasing of the Tech Pack. I just bit the bullet. I don't use the Rally mode often but when I hit those roads/trails it's amazing. If I hadn't purchased it, then I'd have been kicking myself when I was in more technical terrain. The cruise control is also worth the price I paid for the entire package. So I'm really happy with the bike, it's the most fun I've had on a motorcycle since I was a kid. But, the whole reliability issue worries me and after my year and a half with the Pan Am I'm very un-trusting of the tech. Sometimes I think about trading it off on a T-7 though I know the Tenere won't perform on the road like the 890. So I may just keep the 890 and keep my fingers crossed. I put 11,000 miles on the 890 last year, maybe I got lucky and I shouldn't throw away that kind of luck.
Interesting thanks for the info. I did notice that when i took this offroad, compared to other adventure bikes I felt more comfortable 'throwing this around a bit'. I was much happier getting the back end out. I think definitely my choice in the middle weight adventure market. My 790 adventure had done over 25k miles before I sold it, and the only issue I ever had was that little bit of condensation in the TFT display. I don't think they have anywhere near as much trouble as the 'experts' in the online forums suggest. I'm not saying they are perfect, but perhaps reliability problems are overblown?
@@mancavemoto I do think some of the issues are from people either modifying the bike themselves or neglecting some part of the bike, like the air filters or oil changes.

@@mancavemoto yea, demo mode then... NO SOUP FOR YOU! When ( if ) you sell it, does it carry over to the new owner? or is something you have to have an account with KTM for?
Good vlog as always Tony. My biggest gripe is if it is fitted on the bike it should be working as you have paid for those items already. and should not have to pay extra to activate it. i can understand the try as you buy, but you pay enough for the bike as it is and then with all the extras and then all the luggage you have added another £2-£3k on the bike. i suppose as long as you factor that in you won't get any surprises.
They only fit is as it's cheaper from a production pov. I understand it's a new strategy and feels 'off' but it in no way means you've already paid for it.

When ( if ) you sell it, does it carry over to the new owner? or is something you have to have an account with KTM for?
Once its on it on, the functions stay on the bike permanantly. No account with KTM.
This, or the 24 790 Adventure🤪
Tricky, the 790 adventure seems to do pretty much all this does, with just a little less power
Yep I get that, I think this idea hasnt really done KTM any favours from marketing perspective
They only fit is as it's cheaper from a production pov. I understand it's a new strategy and feels 'off' but it in no way means you've already paid for it.
