The "snowboarding" section in City Escape is about teaching the player how to use the control stick in a 3d game without much of platforming challenge to fail.
City escape is a great first level. How did you not know crouching speeds you up on rails? Why is would you press the button? There’s so many rails in that level it gives you the opportunity to experiment. The board section re-introduces players to 3D Sonic with momentum right off the bat and slowly easing you into learning controls without overloading you until you get on foot.
City Escape does a fine job at teaching the player The snowboarding section teaches the player about snowboarding, trick ramps (which even though they only appear in Radical Highway and the Downtown Race multiplayer map, you can still perform tricks by jumping off the end of a rail in Radical Highway, Sky Rail and Final Rush), risk vs reward and moving with the left stick. The on foot section teaches you a bunch of stuff. The rail grinding section does teach you about the importance of balancing on rails to maintain your speed and to stay on the rails without falling off (although the game should tell you about crouching on rails to speed up). There are horizontal bars you can swing on which appear on Radical Highway and Pyramid Cave. There are many wall running sections and downhill and uphill sections of the level which teach the player about momentum. The level teaches you about the obstacles that you need to summersault under. The level does a good job at teaching players about combat should they decide to attack the enemies in the stage and if they don't, the following boss (while not as interesting or fun as the Sonic level before or the Sonic levels after) does teach the player about combat. Any crucial mechanics this level doesn't teach you are taught to you in Metal Harbour with the light speed dash and homing attack chains
It turns out tales got the worst mech stages because he was never meant to be part of the game. Originally the only three playable characters were going to be sonic knuckles and egg man. However so many people were curious about playing as rouge and shadow that’s development decided they should be playable characters and needed to make the teams three and three. That’s why rouge and shadow and tails have the least amount of stages.
No, fans wanted to play as Tails, so they copy pasted Tails into Eggman's gameplay, which in turn lead to them copy pasting Shadow into Sonic's stages and the creation of Rouge.
Tails had some of the worst levels in the game. Robotnik did have, too. But they weren't as bad. Eternal Engine and Cosmic Wall were the only enjoyable ones for me.
not a bad list. i definitely agree that tails had bad levels and most of the sonic stages were pretty good (except crazy gadget). for dark, eggman's stages were overall solid and the worst had to be final chase.
I think issues with the mech control can be solved by hovering a lot while aiming. It's also a great move when it comes to dodging enemy gunfire and precise turning is easier. This does make me wish you started with the hover upgrade, though. I can enjoy the mech levels but I will agree and say that levels like Mission Street and Eternal Engine (to a smaller extent) have some cheap enemy placement occasionally.
Dude mission Street is one of the best levels in the game so much fun to speed run it has a bunch of shortcuts and lots of spectacle with bridges falling and explosions albeit a few cheap spots here or there, hidden base is also one of my favorite levels, also where is part two
Mission Street absolutely should be a Sonic stage. Not only would it fit well with Radical Highway being a Shadow stage but the issues with the stage would be completely absent. There are trails of rings that you can light dash on. The platforming is much better with Sonic, especially once you have the bounce bracelet and you can get over any required hovering section by either running fast enough or spin dash jumping

I do think Gamma controlled better than the SA2 mechs, but Eggman's stages in general are better designed than Tails' stages. I ended up liking quite a few of them! *Cough* check out the dark video *cough* Gamma physics would have been a net improvement though.

Ngl, while I do agree with a lot of stuff on this list (FINALLY, SOMEONE WHO THINKS THE TREASURE HUNTING STAGES ARE BETTER THAN THE STUPID MECH ONES :D ) I gotta like...hard disagree with crazy gadgets placement. As annoying as the level can be towards the end, it is nowhere deserving of a bottom-tier rank. It is a difficult level, but it is a Sonic level. Bumping tunes, secret routes, pretty decent speed sections, and when mastered can feel really rewarding to go through- I do think it's my least favorite Sonic level, but I gotta be honest when I say- I absolutely cannot say the same for Rouge Vs Knuckles, Meteor Herd, Prison Lane, and so many others. Like, I'd expect crazy gadget to be a high D. Maybe even a low C if you're feeling fancy, but E tier? Among the worst levels in the game-? That's just...tripping dude, XD It is your opinion though, I won't fault it in the slightest. And I also really like how this video was made; it's honestly surprising you don't have any subs because this is a very quality video. Good tier list, ( it uses the ranking system in adventure 2 and that's very clever to me :) ), pretty in-depth analysis of the levels and details were given out, and a part 2 on the horizon-this is all really cool, and I hope you keep up the good work and come back soon, man 👍 Easy subscription

If im gonna be so real and have a hot take of my own I enjoyed the majority of mech stages and did NOT enjoy most of the treasure hunting stages the ones i did enjoy were Mainly Rouge's too [Xcept mad space FUCK mad space]
The mech stages are literally impossible to get an A rank on... Except for Cosmic Wall, which is also the best and great mech stage actually, in my opinion. Edit (May 18, 2022): Forget about what I said. I managed to get A ranks on Tails'/Eggman's mech stages. Because all I ever did was mindlessly spam B most of the time, instead of just locking in on enemies before killing them...
I definitely feel like Eggman got the better mech stages, and Knuckles got the better treasure hunting levels. I do feel like I might have been a little too harsh though....
Good question! I've been in the process of moving... Twice. So I haven't had time to make part 2 yet, but if all goes according to plan I should be able to make part 2 some time in July, and other Sonic Ranking videos leading up to Frontiers.
Why? Genuinely asking, if anything it's the least flawed part of the game. As much as I love SA2's gameplay it's far from perfect but SA2 has to have the best story in a Sonic game imo, so I'd like to hear your thoughts.
