  • Hey, My name is Tom. I don't know about you but I find myself wanting to DO everything myself. I consider myself a Jack Of All Trades. Master of none. What you'll find here will be anything from building or fixing cars or trucks, building or remodeling projects and everything in between. I get myself into some pretty interesting situations.
I'd love it if you subscribed so we can stay in touch... You might even learn something. I know I will!
    Thank you for watching!!

I think it's great that you're teaching the kids to make things and use tools. And not just the boys. Those skills will give them confidence to do their own repairs and projects when they're adults, which will save them money and give them a sense of pride and satisfaction of a job well done.

Yes, yes, yes! I own my home and I've lost count of the number of times I regretted not learning basic "how to fix/maintain stuff" as a kid. My dad taught my brother but not me. I don't blame him, those were the times, but I'm so glad to see times changing. Just a suggestion, if cars don't interest your daughters, maybe a woodworking project of something that does interest them.

So important for our kids to learn how to use tools - boys and girls equally. My dad always taught us how to use power tools and manual tools. When I went to college in the 80’s, I did a project that involved building a house for a needy family. The instructor was amazed that I, a young woman, could wield tools better than most of the guys. I have to thank my dad for that. It has saved my husband and me many thousands of $ over the years as we can DIY a lot of projects. Our kids are good with tools as well.

set up a spot for garbage/recycling right by the shelves so garbage doesn't end up ON the shelves. And you should build stronger shelves 'actually' all the way to the ceiling so you can store stuff you use less often on upper shelves, out of the way. "It has been 4 months" - Haha! That's so real life!

    1- garbage pass
    2- like with like
    3- things no longer needed
    4- cry/ibuprofen/heating pad
I will say a few hours in hubby stated "if I claim I need another sander, drill or any type of saw, tell me no"
Lol- so much duplicate stuff from him being so unorganized but it's done!!!!

I am so glad you did this video, Tom! I am a 73 year old woman, living alone. I have a pretty minimal home but I don't know what to do with my shed/workshop. I have things that I just think I'm going to be using someday, and I can't seem to get rid of them. You and Dawn have helped a lot. I'm going to go out right now and cut up all of that old Lumber and throw it away. And anything I haven't used in a year I'm getting rid of. Thank you so much for your advice!

You did an amazing job! I'm working on my surroundings to become minimalistic. I'm old school and I'm not throwing out perfectly good hardware. That being said, it's important that whatever hardware I have has a specific labeled home because otherwise I will be wasting money buying duplicates of things I know I have, but can't find. I'm a 62 year old woman who is turning her home (slowly) into a sanctuary. Last summer I built a wall and moved a whole section of cabinets and counters to a different part of my kitchen so it would be the way I want it. My goal is to surround myself with only things that make me happy and things I use. That's a lot of stuff, but I don't intend to keep anything that doesn't serve my needs and interests. To me, that's Minimalism. I love watching you and your family. You're an inspiration and tons of fun!

Tom, you CAN have all of that AND be a minimalist. You do a ton of projects all the time. A minimalist would keep it organized so that you weren't rebuying things that you already have. Also, as time goes by and you see that there are things you no longer need, go ahead and pass them on or discard them. You did a fantastic job with this project!!! Love that you're not just getting bins, but labeling them. Dawn has mentioned that she also used to not be a bin/label person, but it sounds like the whole family is getting on board!
I think you should put your easy access stuff on the very top before putting them on the bottom shelf, since it really is easier to put things away at standing level.
I recommend having a designated and defined catch-all space or bin to just put stuff when you in a hurry so it's contained until you can get to sorting it out. (I'm also a cricket and this really helps me)

And I’ve always loved watching the kids help in Dawn’s videos, and now yours too. Your boys remind me so much of my son - very good workers who always want to help. I gave my son his own real Stanley toolbox for Christmas when he was 4 and a real screwdriver set at 5, which he then used to remove & reinstall the vent grates in our house for me to clean. 😂 So I love seeing you teach the boys power tools & how to help build chicken coops and Dawn have them help paint the basement floor & everything. Yay! Tom is (finally) on board! You should be very proud of how you decluttered your garage. It looks waaaay better, and you know exactly where to find things. I like things perfect too. You can continue to tweak the set up you have made until it is exactly how you want it. The beauty is that tweaking is a heck of a lot easier to do than trying to do everything perfectly from scratch. I agree with Dawn that it is okay to have lots of tools, as long as they are being used.😀

Morale of this story, Tom. Always listen to your fabulous wife, Dawn. I sure do! 🙂 You said "I don't need bins, Dawn"...next 5 seconds... "I think I need bins".

This is fabulous! I am an artist, and yes, if you have projects, you need space and organization. I finally tackled that last November and it's still a work in process. All the functional categories live together. The idea about having a portable workshop to work on the houses makes sense but I'd be concerned about security of the tools. Where I live, a lot of trailers have been broken into.

Your interests and projects change; so does how and what you organize. I think it looks great.

Utilizing the trailer for your carpentry stuff sounds like a very good idea. My son has been in construction for the last year and a half and he is thinking of doing the same kind of thing. He’s now a full-time handyman for someone that owns homes and rents them. It’s helpful for him as well to have all his carpentry stuff when he’s going to different places not near home base for jobs that may bloom into more than what was originally thought, lol. Like everything else in life!

Oh, you are teaching your children whether you know it or not! My husband was like you, did all kinds of home repairs and was a diesel mechanic by trade. We had an outbuilding full of all kinds of tools and tools in the house too! They watched and worked on things as they grew and watched their dad's willingness to tackle anything as your children watch you too. Work ethic is taught just as your dad taught you! You and Dawn are doing a great job teaching your children life skills that are invaluable! My boys are in their 50's and can fix most anything! I will continue to watch and enjoy you & Dawn's videos! ❤👍Roll Tide! Guess where I'm from! 😆

Hello from Ohio! My husband is tackling the same project. I am sending him this video for encouragement that he is not alone! Thanks, Tom (and Dawn)!

Absolutely. If you use it, keep it. Just organize your stuff to keep it from feeling cluttered. My craft room for instance. Everything has its place. Because of that, it doesn't feel like I have too much stuff. I like things perfect too, Tom. It makes me happy when everything is nice 'n neat. I call my craft room "my store". Love the little cars!
