Here is that other video on frog projects that I mentioned! th-cam.com/video/bgXA2PE2zzw/w-d-xo.html I love you and hope your pre-holiday week is going well! - Dawn
Can't necessarily know what it will feel like when it's done when you have ADHD, and unless we wake up with enough motivation to do it first thing in the morning, we have to do other easy things first to build momentum and motivation in order to feel like doing the frog one. Just wanted to mention that most (and the "best") of these tips don't really apply to those with ADHD.
@@SnowySpiritRuby That's interesting. My son has ADHS. So you would recommend starting chores or learning with easy stuff / stuff he rather likes doing, and then continue with the more difficult things?
@@sonjaforster7091 Hard to say because everyone is different, but at least for me, when I really don't feel like doing anything (let alone the big things), I pick one easy thing and make an attempt to get it done - if I manage to actually get that easy thing done, great; if not, I don't make a big deal of it, because I can always try again later when I have the kind of motivation I need. In other words, I know from almost 30 years of experience that I can't force myself to do it if I don't have enough of the right kind of motivation, so I don't try to - I either find a way to make it more immediately rewarding (and thus more motivating), AKA "tweaking the feedback loop", or I just wait on it until I have enough of the right kind of motivation to do it (usually there's some little task that's not on the list that will be immediately rewarding and I'll often end up doing that instead); the biggest thing is that I simply can't force the motivation to happen, so I don't try to. And then there are times where I feel the switch just randomly flip from "not motivated enough" to "motivated enough" and there doesn't seem to be any apparent external trigger - I really wish I could figure out what the trigger is in those situations, because I would totally hack that if I could. Threats of consequences never really worked as motivation for me (except for avoiding getting any detentions in junior high and high school), positive _immediate_ (anything delayed tends to not motivate me) things were always far more effective, but you know your son, so you probably know better than anyone else what he responds best to in terms of getting motivated (positive vs. negative, immediate vs. delayed, and delayed to what degree). I also very highly recommend checking out the channel How to ADHD - Jess is absolutely incredible, and there's about 7 years' worth of videos on her channel and she's still making more (recently, she's been putting out 2-4 per month). She can explain things better than I can, and she has several videos on the "Wall of Awful" and "Motivation Bridge" (among many others - the feedback loop I believe is in the video game video) that might be helpful. Hope that helps at least a little.
Mark Twain should be credited with the original quote about if your task is to eat a frog its best to do it first thing... He was a very intelligent man who has no doubt inspired many great writers (including Brian Tracy).
I've had a very difficult year, largely out of my control and was feeling quite depressed. I stumbled on one of your videos about 3 weeks ago and since then I've watched about 50 of them and I've been decluttering my house like mad! At least I can have some control over something! Looking and feeling a lot better than I did 3 weeks ago!
I paused this video halfway through to go and do the thing that has been weighing on my mind for two weeks. It took less than twenty minutes. I thought it was going to be horrid instead it was a breeze. I was so delighted I returned to the video then another frog jumped in its place. I paused the video again, had a quick look at that frog, and this one only took me only five minutes to complete. One video, two weights of my shoulder. Thank you, Dawn :)
Dawn, this is huge!!!! Could you try and make this happen? You are so easy to listen to and very convincing. You could do whatever it takes to add life skill classes in every school in the nation for sure!!! I am a woman in my 60's. I struggle every day with being overwhelmed with just normal every day task. I've owned two businesses in my life and only with the grace and help from God did they flourish. They really should teach what you teach in school! I love you!!! Thank you for ALL YOU HAVE TAUGHT ME!!! I'M NOT THE SAME PERSON!
@@joellenholbrook2318 I LOVE this! And your honesty. I think what you shared here is part of the whole problem…. People admit to what they don’t know bc it’s not safe to do so. Thank you for your honesty. ❤️
One tip for life. Take it or leave it, but I encourage you to take it. 🥰 Add a, hug your kid for a really long time, text a thank you for being a friend, and/or serve someone else. Make this a priority on your list. Yes, we all need to get things done, but don't forget what really matters.
Something I love is having a page divided in 12 for the months of the year. Then dump things onto that page by their monthly due date. Each week when I’m planning, I look at the box for the month and add those to my list by priority. This helps keep those long term “frogs” I can’t act on just yet from feeling like they might get forgotten and leaving me with the sense that I need to keep rehearsing so I don’t forget. I even use it for gift ideas for birthdays and holidays. Just write it in the month box and you won’t have to worry about forgetting. I learned this from the book The Together Teacher.
Hi Dawn! I am not a mom nor do I own my own home, but I wanted to say thanks for making videos that have really helped me! I'm a college student and figuring out how to adult (manage my routines, finances, and build a grown up's lifestyle bit by bit). I come from a family of messy people and ADHD, so I have found your videos to be extremely helpful in simply learning healthy mindsets. Thanks so much for making it calm and judgement free, and something I can listen to as I clean!
I am a list person, have tried many planners and now have an evolving bullet journal to help me. I learned about the frog concept while working on a big engineering project. We had this big plastic garden frog, and a person with an immediate task would get the frog on their desk and keep it until the task was done. Then it was passed to the next big task on the schedule. It was hilarious, but also very effective it getting things done. You always wondered if you’d come into work and see that frog. Now I am retired and my frogs are smaller 😂 . Great info as always Dawn. 🌸
I love how simple this is. As an ADHD SAHM I don’t need the fluff of a “cute planner.” Good ol notebook brain dump and then sort is my best way to plan!
@@ladyhawk9032 you're the only jerk here. This channel is absolutely for me and not for you. You can leave. And don't be a creep and a stalker and keep contacting me or I will contact the authorities.
After losing my husband in 2019, I got myself into a real fix. I couldn't move in any direction. After his cremation, I had to postpone his funeral because of that hideous virus and I was getting pressure from his very elderly mother who lives in another state. I wasn't taking care of myself at all and just wanted to sleep so I wouldn't have to deal with it. I had lists of lists. I wrote them on a dry board in black ink, and put it where I would see it all day, but that didn't help. I started back going to church and that helped me more than anything. I started meeting new people and going out to dinner with our supper club. I had a peace in my soul, but I'm still working on the lists. I'm hoping that this is the year I can wipe that board clean! I have SO much stuff that I'm going to give away. These videos really do help, especially to know that I'm not alone with this problem.
Eat the frog and breaking down large tasks are probably some of the best advice out there to be effective and feel like you’ve really accomplished something. And Dawn proves that you don’t need a fancy planner or to do the artsy bullet journal to be productive. ( The real and original Bullet Journal is excellent though. I personally love the artsy bullet journal but recognize that it’s not necessary)
David Allen’s GTD (getting things done) system has helped me a lot. I especially like his concept of keeping a “waiting for” list. These are things that you can’t complete until you hear back from somebody else. Some examples are waiting on a receipt from the Dr office, waiting on a colleague for some info at work, waiting on your child’s teacher to tell you if there are food allergies before you send in food for a classroom celebration, etc.
On the front of my diary I have written 'The pain of discipline is always less than the pain of regret'. I don't know who to attribute this to but I love this quote.
I wish this video existed years ago! I actually implemented almost exactly the same system a few months ago and it has really helped my anxiety and bad procrastination. I have chipped away 50+ tasks down to 20 with a goal of only having 5-10 at any given time. I keep my big task list on a spreadsheet on my computer, color coded to help me know what tasks are new , what has been on my list for literally 3 years, and when I have something that needs to be done but I might be waiting on someone/something before I can do it so I remember to follow up. I select my daily tasks from the big list and put it on my phone… definitely still a habit I’m working on building consistency with, but this is the first system that has actually worked for more than a few days.
All talk of 'frogs' got me off my duff and I FINALLY followed up on a plumbing estimate. I had emailed them but never got an answer and I knew I had to call. So I did and now it's straightened out and the job is booked, the deposit made. Not a huge task but it's been hanging over me for a bit to get it done, stuck on my silent 'to do' list. Feels great to get it settled! Thanks for the motivation Dawn!
I always say that I finally embraced my inner laziness. I finally figured out that when I procrastinated I was doing twice as much or three times as much work then if I had just done it early, so I decided that every distasteful task must be done as soon as possible very important. It must be done. Everything put aside until the most distasteful task was finished, and after that you feel so great, you see all the free time that you have to do the small easy tasks and you just keep rolling and knock the little ones out one at a time feeling more and more proud of yourself when the crap is done. You can be absolutely lazy and never worry because when I procrastinated, I never could truly relax I was like a fugitive being hounded by all the tasks I hadn’t done.
Dawn… please know that you are doing the good Lord’s work!! I really can’t believe you just dropped this video when I’ve been asking God to help me with my ginormous never ending to-do list!! I am going rewatch this video and take notes!! 🙌
Amen! I was just praying about whether or not to buy an incredibly expensive planner (Passionate Penny Pincher) - this answers the question! I still desire to have regularly recurring chores written out, but perhaps I can do this myself!
@@Racheythemagnificent I hear you re the regularly recurring chores - maybe a simple diary with certain chores assigned to particular days of the week, or times of the month depending on the chore itself..?
@@gemmamccarthy5861 I'm setting up my bullet journal for this purpose. I can't believe I forgot how helpful they are, but always thankful for reminders of good and simple tools.
Thanks - great video! One thing I have been doing lately is asking myself "what would make me happy today?" in the morning and put that on my list for the day. Maybe it's clean off the coffee table, or straighten out a drawer, or send a "just touching base" text to a loved one. Then I bask in the good feeling of having accomplished that one happy job throughout the whole day!!!
Dawn!! You have had other videos offering this similar information! Your advise has has always been a game changer for me!! You have given me permission to let things go, to be okay with saying no, and to remember to make sure my focus for each day lines up with what I say is important. Thank you!
I decluttered again with your videos. I got rid of two trash bags of clothes and Knick knacks and a table. My friend picked it all up today and donated it for me. Woohoo! I am so happy I did that. I feel better and my home is calm and peaceful. Thank you so much for always being here when I need encouragement. Merry Christmas and a happy new year.
Your Frog system (ok Brian Tracy's, but I learned it from you) has been doing wonders in my life. I really enjoy how you used the space around you as a white board. I'm a visual learner and this helps drive the ideas home. Thank you! Have a great Christmas!
I would like to say A MASSIVE THANK YOU, I have watched lots of your videos in the last 2 weeks and it has HELPED ME SO MUCH! I decluttered our house, changed how I think. MANY MANY MANY THANKS for your videos and helping people to change their lives and live better and happy live! You are amazing!!!
Fun fact from a flight attendant: We have a check list for when we need to prep the customers for an emergency landing (and if we might need to evacuate for whatever reason) and we only have the time allotted that the captain gives us to complete the checklist. Well if we need to get on the ground even earlier than expected, we know we did the best we can…because the checklist is in order of importance (brace position, life jacket placement, etc…). So this is kinda the same concept. Even if we run out of time, we still did the most important tasks first to get customers ready for an emergency landing. Plus I like how you used the “pilot flying” analogy at the beginning of the video. 😉
The problem with an infinite todo list is not motivation, because no matter how motivated you are there is always a next task, and a next one, and another... The real issue is being able to prioritize, know your limitations, and be able to enjoy the rest of the day guilt-free even when you know there is a pending pile of work waiting for you when you come back.
Remembered a call I had to make to the doctor during this video! 😂 stopped the video, made the call (took 2 minutes), and then came back to finish the video. 🎉
Dawn, you are such a good teacher ! Caring, dynamic, relatable , inspiring, practical, knowledgeable , & passionate about the subject. You truly want to help & it shows ! Cool : I think you’re filming from the new office building ! Exciting ! Congrats ! Merry Christmas to you & yours! Liz PS Got the Devotional. Fabulous !
Thank you sharing this content. I've been watching videos all week about how to help myself. I am not a mom but clicked on the video anyhow. Not only are you easy to listen to but this resonates with me more than the videos that were focused on workplace to do lists versus your approach. I know being a mother is the hardest job, I've learned this from family and friends. I will be taking your "notes" to heart and start today with a new approach. I think my approach will be a blend but that's okay. What was most meaningful to me is that you described exactly how I feel and that was validating. I might have to watch this daily for awhile. With gratitude, Susan (love from Ohio)
It resonated with me too, and I'm a single dude lol I was researching motivation and found this gem! Loved the "eat-frog-first" analogy, as having long-term stressors is what often leads to anxiety and lack of motivation issues.
I have bought so many planners in the past and have found, like you, that a plain notebook works best for me. Mine is kind of sloppy, not nearly as neat as yours, but it works. Thank you for your always timely messages, Dawn. I appreciate you very much and am glad I found your channel this year. Merry Christmas to you and your family.
It’s always reassuring when you hear other people do things things the way you do- even if it’s unconventional. I turn my brain dumps into to-do list. I need to give frog tasks a bigger priority so I can have guilt free time in the evenings for my hobby (knitting).
I have two even better ideas for you (saves writing on paper): 1. Get yourself an A3-sized whiteboard that’s divided up into the days of the week, and write everything on there. You can just rub things out and move them about at will. 2. Use the same whiteboard but instead of writing on it, write your tasks on SMALL Post-It notes and stick them in place - that way, when circumstances change you can easily move your tasks to another day/time slot. Et Voila! x
I so get the file insurance, I lost money for not filing all my receipts for an apartment fire. It was so overwhelming. I am grateful for what I got done and have had to let go of the rest. The whole time it was hanging out never to far from my thoughts. So even though I wont get all the money back it is a relief to not have it hanging over my head anymore. It was helpful to do some of the things mentioned. Like putting a timer on and only working on it for a set time (usually I ended up doing more) or knowing if i just got a part done than it was as good day. Thank you for the reminder that one big task is okay.
I love using a notebook for brain dumps! I need help managing my time and I would love to dig deeper into this for 2023. My to do list is always 10 miles long! Help! Do you separate work vs home life as far as the top 3 things go? For example, my top 3 work things I need to do today are: schedule CPR training for staff, complete and fax client progress reports, and complete monthly billing summaries. My top 3 personal or household tasks are: schedule follow up appointment with surgeon, do the laundry, and wrap Christmas gifts. For my non-profit, I need to: write and mail thank you letters for donations, purchase items for Boxes of Hope and create agenda for Visioning Retreat. I am self employed, plus I run a non-profit for children with special needs. All of the bazillion to dos run together and I get overwhelmed. It's possible to do what I need to do, and I delegate what I can. I've been doing this for years as an Olympic juggling or plate balancing sport I think (haha🤣) - but I'd sure like to have less stress about it and have more time for fun. I know this was a very long question- sorry about that! You're the best and I appreciate your videos very much!
I was wondering this too. I feel like house things have to be automated. I’ve spent years working on this and it’s always easier for me to prioritize other peoples list rather than my own (unsavory frogs). So, I just wanted to tell you to put yourself at the top of the cue. Calling the surgeon back for your follow up appointment is #1. Without you in good health none of the other awesome things can happen. Also, check out Diane in Denmark (and try to implement days that you do certain types of tasks).
Hi Gail, though I'm no expert, I'm pretty sure the top 3 tasks are overall, not from each category; simply the 3 most important for that day. What Dawn shared in this video is if you do complete all 3 priority tasks then you can dabble in the "quick tasks" or the "B" category items. I do hope this helps some. Godspeed.
I'm glad I used to do something similar begining of 2022 - I jot down by category to do - cleaning, job, organising,cook,self-care,gratitude each day & accomplish 1-2tasks in each section to give me that imaginary balanced life... But I often got to miss out on tasks ... This master list must be something I needed !! Thanks for helping us 🙏🏼💪 this new year planner definitely has ur ideas!!
The “eat that frog” concept completely changed my thinking and has helped me so much! Thanks Dawn for presenting these approaches to us - I am so grateful ❤
I know I am only seeing this now but it is exactly what I need. Starting now on my new pink journal. I don't know how you do it Dawn but it's like you are inside our brains😁 You cover every detail and so well spoken Thank you!!❤
Hi Dawn, You are so helpful helping me part with unnecessary things and get things organized. Now I think of tasks morning chores and afternoon projects. The morning is routine, the afternoon project takes thought but I try to get at least one "frog"done then. I also have a brief end of day chore list to make sure nothing is out of control for morning, at least empty the dishwasher and dryer. Your Sunday box really helped too with paperwork.
Funny, I literally just downloaded a digital day planner and was messing with it when the notification popped up for this video. Dawn, are you spying on me?! Lol
I have watched you talk about the concept of "eating the frog" several times, but I always stray back to doing my to-do list the old way - stressing myself out all over again! Thank you for the reminder - needed this!
Dawn!!! I want to wish you and your beautiful family a blessed and Merry Christmas! You have inspired this 71 year old Jewish mom, married 46 years, with two adult daughters. We all share your videos! (We were all at Dave Ramsey and heard that you were down in the front but we were too embarrassed to go running down like groupies to find you). I wanted to let you know that ever since I watched your vid about tackling paper blob, I have adopted the 3 folders - now, time will tell, and a 3rd folder labelled 2022 to save mostly tax receipts. I go through my folders religiously at some point Sunday evening. I have no more paper blob anywhere in our diwnsized apartment-a miracle!!!! I share that technique with everyone. I have a vertical wire basket and three folders; it's truly done the trick. I'm ever so grateful for your decluttering and organizational wisdom. Coupled with your precise on camera delivery, I agree with everyone, you're our gift!
The eat the frog concept has helped me a lot. I drift away from it sometimes, so I am glad for the reminder.. I recently broke my wrist, then my eyeglasses, while my car was waiting for a part for ten days. Then all my identity papers, credit cards and health/medicare cards were stolen, and more, but it still helps to think of what really really really HAS to get done today, and know that I can make a start, and even hope to someday get back to a more peaceful munching on the frogs. Thanks Dawn.
I love how you prioritize your lists! I also use a notebook to brain dump, but don't always prioritize. However- I am results oriented, so instead of checking or crossing items off as I get them done, I highlight them! Bright colors = progress! And I can review what I've done to feel accomplished. My mom scribbles things off like crazy, like its her bank app credentials! 😂 that makes me feel so unsettled! But highlighters work for me!!
That was a wonderful video. I often find your simplest videos are the most powerful. A huge thank you, you can't imagine how much you help people and especially mothers.
I love “eat that frog” concept. If I remember correctly, it may have been in the book or the presenter who was working with us that said, “eat the ugliest frog first and don’t look at it too long just eat it!”😊
I think you just saved me at least $30! Was looking to buy a new planner and watching videos about the best planners.... now heading to Walmart for a nice spiral notebook :-) Yay!
This video has come up at a time when I started to feel overwhelmed because I actually have been acting on some frogs! I have one regular frog that I need to tackle, and this is just the perfect motivation for me. I started a massive brain dump and it is so intense but I'm also going to take your advice and break it down. My other tip that I've loved in the past but haven't been good at is categorizing the to-do list with the 4 quadrants: Important/Urgent, Important/Not Urgent, Not Important/Urgent, Not Important/Not Urgent. I think I struggle the most with figuring out what truly is important. Most curious is something might be a frog can also be not urgent, so it's a matter I think of tackling Important/Urgent first and going from there. Luckily for me one of my biggest frogs is in that category, so yay! Gonna go tackle at least part of it right now. Thanks for all your inspiration over the years! I'll definitely be working my way back through your channel as I get more organized and eat more frogs 🐸 ❤
Today I made a list on paper. I got 10 of those dreaded phone calls done. It took hours, but it is done. Now I only have 3 that didn't get done. They weren't urgent, so I can tackle them on Monday. Thank you for this. I have been having a horrible time with putting things off. I love your channel. It's the absolute BEST on YT.
On my catch-up day I do one urgent, one feel good, and one I don’t like but will be relived it’s done task (call dentist, file papers ect) the latter I sometimes come to look forward because it brings me such relief that it feels good to be done
Yes! This was just what I needed! My "To-Do" list that I write on my weekly planner never gets done, and just keeps getting transferred to my next weekly schedule. Frustrating and discouraging!! I love the idea of creating a brain-dump and just picking two or three items to put on my schedule for the day. I feel great when I can cross things off and have nothing left on the list on the end of the day. Thank-you!!
I love when you remind us to tackle the "frog projects" first. My days go so much better when I do that. Also, I love that you explained how to break down the large projects into manageable chunks. As an ADD person that is something that trips me up. Great video, Dawn!
I grabbed a blank dot journal last week and started using it. I have purchased so many planners, ugh! But I decided to try the absolute minimal planner I could. I'm not even using colored pens or stickers!! Here's my real comment. I am embracing the idea of life as a journey. The bulk of this journal, I am calling my "daily log" and I am just writing down a set of daily to do's a spot for meal plan and gratitude/quotes as needed. One page per day, but literally written one day at a time. I loved your quote " time flys, you're the pilot" Perfect for the Journey of life!
The big tasks are overwhelming because they’re not tasks, they’re projects. Break the big scary things down into small steps-actual tasks-and it’ll be easier. Way less struggle to get yourself to do it first thing. Edit: I wrote that comment near the beginning of the video. One thing a lot of advice like this ignores is those of us who need to have a list of literally everything we need to do, things that some people apparently remember to do easily, like eating meals and doing laundry and showering and so on. All of these hacks for keeping things down to a manageable level leave us out completely.
Everytime I tried to push around something important I hear Dawn’s voice, “eat that frog” 🐸😂😂 and I said yes, I need to take care of this now. Thanks Dawn 😊
Dawn thank you so much! I have always been fairly organised and used to try ALL the planners, diaries and fancy notebooks, but then I came across your videos a few months ago and started trying this method…it’s awesome! I have one “out of my head” notebook for my brain dump where I literally write everything down in different categories, and then daily I will have a to-do list with just 3-5 things on it. It helps sooooo much (perfectionist procrastinator here!). It definitely helps to stop feeling overwhelmed, as before I would have a huge to-do list with everything on it… now I find that a lot of the stuff in my brain dump notebook actually times itself out or are just ideas that I have…stuff I “could” do but not necessarily stuff I “should” do. Your way of simplifying it all really helps with the mental overload…thank you so much for all your inspiration! Xxx
I am on my 3rd or 4th simplification sweep through my house and I am loving it! I look around and see less and less piles everywhere, bare floors and walls (I purged them too) it feels so airy and clean (even when the dust is piling up lol). I have bought so many planners but when the enthusiasm for them wears off they end up being very overwhelming and so much work to maintain that I don't keep up with them. I am looking forward to giving this a try a simple yet mind-freeing way.
You are awesome! My four kids are grown now. I homeschooled them for 14 years. I wish I had you in my life back then. Thank you for sharing everything you’ve learned with us. Gosh bless you and Merry Christmas!
Thank you. Holidays are hard for me and I let things slip. I made my bed and did a few dishes while listening to you. Mire to go but at least I have a start
This helped me get on top of the to do lists and ideas rolling round my head. Now I have less to do and do things as quick as possible so only write down when I have more then 5/6 in my head. And just write projects down. So thank you so much. You have influencedy life for the better.
Dawn, A few wks ago I bought a book to keep me on track. I'm a stay at home wife & volunteer to take care of our church missionaries (emails, etc). I needed to remember things coming up & I got tired of 20 phone reminders going off & resetting them. Now, I write them in my book & I like physically marking things off. Great video. 🙂
I first heard the eat the frog concept from you, and it was a total game changer. Now I taught it to my daughter, and she always announces when she is eating her frog so she can move on with her day lol
The number of times you spoke to me and my life with this video! There have been a lot of changes in my family in the last few months and I feel behind and overwhelmed. I gave notice at work and I'm done in a few weeks and I am planning on doing a major reset on my life. New way of planning, getting stuff done, decluttering my home, and starting my own business to do what I'm passionate about!
This is such a helpful video! I can see how it could be possible to build my frog eating muscles in the same way I have seen and felt my decluttering and minimizing muscles build up. Thank you for putting your insights together to share!
I thrive on simplicity and organization in my life! Watching your videos this past year has just affirmed that. I have a yearly to do list on my phone notes for big tasks and household projects. I use a notepad for weekly task and do a few/ day as able. I also still use a paper planner in my purse.
I’m trying out the TeuxDeux List. Thanks for the link. This looks good. I was trying out another app over the summer, but I got frustrated because I couldn’t move tasks to the top. At this time in my life, it works well to have a beautiful calendar (Target) on the fridge. Recently, for the Christmas/end of year season, I put a paper To-Do List next to the calendar to help keep me on track with all the Frogs 🐸. It has been a simple way to keep from forgetting all the important things. I cleaned off my desk & opened my beautiful planner (I bought it in case I got busier). I started using the planning pages for deadlines & most important tasks to keep me on top of the most important frogs each day.
Ugh that was good. The hanging over the head tasks....I usually do all the pickup type things first so that it could help my brain think on the big things, but then when there hasn't been the time for the big things. I've heard you talk about the frog things...but the hanging over the head part has finally clicked!!
I've just found your channel and I'm happy I have. You are wise beyond your years, I'm 73 so I know ! I just watched your video about the"frog" . This is so true. Find the easiest task and go for it...or not! I find your words inspirational because most of us buy things, don't use them and as you say feel guilty and think less of ourselves. I am starting my journey to be a minimalist. I plan to take one room at a time and give away all of the things that don't work for me anymore. Thank you so much for what you share with us. Best wishes for a happy and healthy new year.
Lists are great tools, when they are treated like tools, not masters. My best advice is to use them to organize, track, remind ... to make life easier ... but NOT to dictate your days. When I get stressed out, I remind myself to live THIS DAY, not some preconceived notion of it. That idea always grounds me in the present moment, gives me room to breathe and reminds me to try to "rejoice and be glad in it." Any list that overwhelms me is an automatic cue that it needs rewritten, and I will purposely pencil in a little joy. :) God bless.
I find I do this in work but not at home. My at home to do list is just too long. I have just pulled out a notebook and I am doing my Brain Dump now and will make my to do list a bit shorter. Thank you for your inspiration once again.
I do a similar way of splitting a big task into do-able parts, usually over time. For big projects/tasks, I label them GOALS. Below each goal I break the goal down into the various OBJECTIVES to meet in order to accomplish the entire goal. That way I can see I'm making progress as I check off each objective when met.
This was such a good reminder Dawn! When I was in the workforce (retired now) I used a Franklin Covey planner for home and office. Now I use a Microsoft “To Do” app and “Cozi” app to keep organized. You are so right about the Frog! Breaking it down into smaller tasks is the key for myself. I also make it a point to be realistic regarding the tasks I schedule for a day. And yes, I do add and check off tasks I completed that weren’t on my list😊
I use a planner everyday. If I don’t write it down, it doesn’t get done, or totally forgotten. Mine is a dollar store variety, has a column for “goals”… that’s my brain dump, and columns for each day. I draw a box around each task, so it’s not just an overwhelming list. I pick the few (3) that I need to do and get them done first. It works much like what you describe. It is not totally perfect, but it keeps me on track. It stays open on my table where I have it in front of me all day. When I put it away, and it is not telling me what to do next, things go by the wayside. I would like to keep my table clutter free, but …… this one thing I need to compensate. In my own defense, if it wasn’t for the active planner telling me what to do next, I would not be so far along on my minimalist journey. I have been watching your channel for years and you would be proud!…
@@sonjaforster7091 Just watched Jessica's most recent video - it hits the nail on the head with the "eat the frog" topic.
Way to go! It helps me too
Right?! It's the same for me
Consider her Take Your House Back course! Worth every penny!!!
I was in a similar place when I found the Minimal Mom - one step at a time - be kind to yourself ❤
I'm proud of you Nanchesca 😊
I paused this video halfway through to go and do the thing that has been weighing on my mind for two weeks. It took less than twenty minutes. I thought it was going to be horrid instead it was a breeze. I was so delighted I returned to the video then another frog jumped in its place. I paused the video again, had a quick look at that frog, and this one only took me only five minutes to complete. One video, two weights of my shoulder. Thank you, Dawn :)
Feels so good
Way to go!!
Woot woot!🎉🎉🎉
Wow Ellen!!! This is awesome! Way to go!!!!! 🐸❤️
Awesome!
This stuff should be taught to kids in grade school! This is the kind of process that helps people throughout their entire lives. Thanks Dawn!
Yes! I wish I had learned this! I’ll be teaching my kids this asap!
💯 and for some reason just reading this makes me want to cry 😭
Hi y’all 😀
👏👏👏 I do agree y’all!!!
I couldn’t have said it better myself, so I’ll just hush here😝
God’s Blessings ❤️😀
One tip for life. Take it or leave it, but I encourage you to take it. 🥰 Add a, hug your kid for a really long time, text a thank you for being a friend, and/or serve someone else. Make this a priority on your list. Yes, we all need to get things done, but don't forget what really matters.
Love this!
Beautiful!
Very true!
Yes!! I hug my kids until they're done! They are 15,16,17,21,22,23,23 so it's fun to hug until they get a little squirmy! 🥰😍😂
Do you seriously need to put those things on a to-do list? It should be a way of life, not just a task to complete.
This is a great idea.
That is so funny about the assigned plastic frog!
Love that plastic frog idea. Brings some levity along with accountability to what could otherwise be a very stressful situation.
I bought a bunch of cute frog stickers and I put one in my task planner everyday then add the "frog task" . I love that book!
I love how simple this is. As an ADHD SAHM I don’t need the fluff of a “cute planner.” Good ol notebook brain dump and then sort is my best way to plan!
you do not have adhd calm down
@@aidasa3791 You know this how? This channel isnt for jerks like you seem to be.
@@ladyhawk9032 you're the only jerk here. This channel is absolutely for me and not for you. You can leave. And don't be a creep and a stalker and keep contacting me or I will contact the authorities.
@@aidasa3791 I, unlike you have much better things to do than care about following someone who is obviously plagued with personal issues.
Yes! Over this year, I found I’m comfortable with 4 categories: 1) top priorities, 2) to-do, 3) projects, 4) habits
I'm going to try breaking it down like you do for a little bit. Thanks for sharing.
On the front of my diary I have written
'The pain of discipline is always less than the pain of regret'.
I don't know who to attribute this to but I love this quote.
So grateful for you, Dawn. Love learning from you. Know that your message matters
Thank you Karen! That means more than you know!!!
Yes!!! ❤
It’s those things that have been on my list for 3 years that bog me down! TFS!
I ALWAYS put off phone calls. I hate making phone calls
So well put! I agree wholeheartedly.

Thank you!
Thank you Tonya! I really appreciate this :)
Thank you for the motivation today! Because of this video I made a dental appointment, did a rebate, and called tires place to ask them a question. 🙂
You print so neatly in your notebook.
I loved ur “post it tip”… with each task mentioned with time-allotted.👍👍👍👍
Oh my goodness this was me yesterday. I had a breakdown, I felt overwhelmed
Fun fact from a flight attendant:
We have a check list for when we need to prep the customers for an emergency landing (and if we might need to evacuate for whatever reason) and we only have the time allotted that the captain gives us to complete the checklist.
Love the simple white background with your black shirt. The look of the video matches the minimalist message.
I discovered this year frixion eraseable pens and they help me keep my messy calendar neater
Love this "classroom" format.
I’d love her to do a whole video on this!
Godspeed.
When I do minor tasks, I call it virtuous procrastination. But still, I agree that hardest need to be done and we feel so relieved if we get going.
I've listened to that book about 5x in the past week! It's short and so good!
I know I am only seeing this now but it is exactly what I need. Starting now on my new pink journal. I don't know how you do it Dawn but it's like you are inside our brains😁 You cover every detail and so well spoken
Thank you!!❤
Hi Dawn, You are so helpful helping me part with unnecessary things and get things organized.
Lol
Lol, that's awesome!
Mark Twain said it first. Such a good quote!
That was a wonderful video. I often find your simplest videos are the most powerful. A huge thank you, you can't imagine how much you help people and especially mothers.
I love “eat that frog” concept. If I remember correctly, it may have been in the book or the presenter who was working with us that said, “eat the ugliest frog first and don’t look at it too long just eat it!”😊
I run the risk of sounding like Diana…we need a t shirt that says “Eat that frog!” Or “I eat frogs for breakfast!”😂
That would be a great idea!🤭🥰
I'm all in for a ball cap that says I eat frogs for breakfast :)
A frog does not grow into a toad! He might have turned into a big ugly bullfrog but not a toad! I love what you do!!!
You are so great!!
Or...even a PLANNER with an eat the frog section, and/or a frog on the cover. 🙂
My soul really gets touched every time I watch your videos. The Lord really speaks to me through them.
I think you just saved me at least $30! Was looking to buy a new planner and watching videos about the best planners.... now heading to Walmart for a nice spiral notebook :-) Yay!
Paused the video to eat a frog which hopped into my life yesterday, feel better now. Thank you
This video has come up at a time when I started to feel overwhelmed because I actually have been acting on some frogs!
I get so happy when there is a notification that you shared a new video! Can't wait to watch and learn from you
I’m notorious for making endless to-do lists! This is good advice to remember. Thanks Dawn!
I ate the frog first today, and it made a HUGE difference. Thanks for encouragement to do that!
I'm a pretty organized person, but learned some great tips here. Thanks!
Dawn, this is the video I’ve been needing for the last 30 years. I am so excited to incorporate these ideas. Thank you so much.
Xxx
This has helped me keep organized and has lowered my anxiety. Thank you! 😊
I love the idea of breaking down those big projects into multiple steps. So smart!
Hi Dawn, love the minimal set with the text on the wall. It's calming and makes it easy to follow.
You are awesome! My four kids are grown now. I homeschooled them for 14 years. I wish I had you in my life back then. Thank you for sharing everything you’ve learned with us. Gosh bless you and Merry Christmas!
Timely advice. I started on a new, tough task yesterday. Had been hanging over my head for months. I am not done, but starting has so helped my mood.
Anyone else in complete shock that Dawn still has the planners she ordered that didn’t work? 🤯
😂😂😂
Thank you. Holidays are hard for me and I let things slip. I made my bed and did a few dishes while listening to you. Mire to go but at least I have a start
Planning is everything! It really is essencial for a more calm and relaxed days.
Love the simplicity.
Dawn, your choice of the all white desk and background with your black top is excellent. I am able to focus on your message!

This helped me get on top of the to do lists and ideas rolling round my head. Now I have less to do and do things as quick as possible so only write down when I have more then 5/6 in my head. And just write projects down. So thank you so much. You have influencedy life for the better.
As always, great video. Your videos are sooo helpful. Thank you. 😊
Best video ever, needed this at this time. Thank you
Dawn, A few wks ago I bought a book to keep me on track.
I have finally given up the idea that the perfect planner would change my life! Moved to the plain notebook and a plain monthly calendar!!!!!
