- Master magician Harry Houdini (1874-1926) starred in five silent films from 1919 to 1923. The famed illusionist/escape artist also founded his own movie company, the Houdini Picture Corporation.
In 1919, the great Houdini entered the movie business, eventually appearing in a total of five silent films that are now available in a special three-disc DVD box set: Houdini: The Movie Star DVD (Kino International, 2008).
I have not been able to confirm the exact film that this scene is from, but my guess is that it was a part of "The Master Mystery" (Octagon Films, 1920), a 15 chapter serial - also known as The Houdini Serial - which starred the great Houdini as Quentin Locke, an enterprising G-man who tries to crack a powerful criminal organization.

Gordon asked Houdini after the Montreal show, if at the age of 52, could he still take blows to the abdomen. Houdini said he could, and before he could brace his stomach muscles for the impact, Gordon (a college boxer) delivered a series of three quick blows. It is said that Houdini winced with some pain and stated that if he had time to prepare himself properly, he would have been in a better position to take the blows.
It took longer for them to tie him up, than for Houdini to escape :D
an illusion is a completely different thing! this was an escape and a good one i might add.
Sadly, most people don't appreciate the art of escapology these days. Houdini was an amazing performer.
This guy cannot be kidnapped lol
Lol,😁
AGREED LOL
xD
Although there are people who can perform more sensational escape acts today, watching Houdini videos is still entertaining.
houdini was the greatest and there never will be an equal. he actually did most of his true stunts like this early in his carreer and was almost killed a couple times--and failed a couple of times. because of that the last part of his carreer he switched to non risk type magic such as the milk can and water torture chamber. (false assemblies he made and he simply climbed out)
for the straightjacket he dislocated his arms and was muscular and fit beyond belief.
The scene is from a silent film made in the 1920s, when all films were still silent. Frequently, a pianist or organ player would be hired to accompany the picture. I selected the ragtime music because I felt that it was reflective of the period.
thanks for the lesson in escapology houdini. now i know if i ever get tied to a chair, i should just wiggle like a mad man.
Harry Houdini was much more than a simple magician. He liked to prove the human limits.
There are a lot of books on Houdini including the latest: "The Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of America's First Superhero" . In general he would expand his body while being tied up. Then he would relax and the ropes get looser
Wow. Truly amazing. I love how he's giving just token resistance as he's being tied up. You know he's thinking, "Meh. No big deal, cuz these punks are going to get a big surprise soon enough."
those who think that there even was a match for Houdini,,,EVER,don't know shit!Harry was the greatest magician to ever walk the face of the Earth!
remember a famous quote:" Nothing on Earth can hold Houdini!"
the thing I like about Harry Houdini is multi-talented. He was an aviator, actor, film producer. Heck... Magic's not even half of it. This man was one of the greatest entertainers, ever.
The reason he is considered one of the greatest is because he did it waaay back then, before anybody else had done such stuff...
Greatest escape artist to ever walk this earth.
I was aware of this in the early 90's when I was in San Francisco. There was a street performer doing the trick with chains asking a member of the audience to tie him to a lamppost. I volunteered. Before I tied him up i got behind him & gave him a bearhug forcing all the wind out of him. I then tied him up pretty well... and tight! Once I'd finished it was impossible for him to escape. And he couldn't get out of the chains. He wasn't happy with me at all. But I got a bloody good laugh out of it.
He got out of the ropes in about 40 seconds. Easily. Not many people can do that. Though, Houdini was primarily an entertainer--an escape artist, more specifically. He did things that have "illusionist" added to his repertoire, but his main claim to fame was as "escape artist," doing stunts that were daring or otherwise difficult, all in record time, even dislocating joints to escape. He never would've cared much to be called a "magician" since he was often out to debunk magicians' tricks.
I've seen a lot of people in TH-cam and in real life actually doing this trick and escaping.
I've seen maybe 50 if I count all together.
But no-one could do what Houdini did, escape faster than what it took for the people to tie him.
The man was such a legend!!!!!
That was the key to the Houdini legend, in that his escapes seemed so impossible that the only way he could have accomplished it was through magic! ;)
I read in a book about Houdini that his sleight of hand was incredible enough that he could pick up a quarter lying flat with just the palm of his hand. He also usually had a pin in his throat that he could regurgitate to pick locks. Also he could break free from a strait jacket!
Yea. The straight jacket thing is heard a lot about.
I don't see why this is so amazing. I believe that most people would be able to wriggle out of rope. There was no special technique or "magic", it was just lots of squirming and rocking.
The man is a legend.
Thanks and totally cool. This proves the value of humor. What a showman to the max! LLH
Happy Birthday Harry!
A rare record. Had he lived he would be 137 year old today.
I noticed how he moves around constantly while being roped, etc. which gives just a little bit of room between his body and the rope so it isn't tight tight.
This rag fits perfect!!
Houdini had been suffering from appendicitis for several days prior and yet refused medical treatment. His appendix burst from the trauma of Gordon's blows. Although in serious pain, Houdini none-the-less continued to travel, without seeking medical attention.
Aw I miss the the simple times when prisoners were merely tied to chairs, and guards often fell asleep. R.I.P Houdini
this is the best thing i've ever seen
He was very amazing, I would have done so much to meet him, just to learn some of his secrets : / R.I.P. Harry Houdini
WOW THAT WAS GOOD!!!!!
He was quick.
+Samuel Runt lmfao
Houdini was also m ade history in Australia when he flew the first power, controlled flight in 1910. In March 2010, Australia will celebrate 100 years of aviation at Diggers Rest - thanks to Harry.
Happy Birthday Harry! 137 years..
I can say without doubt tha houdini was the king of the magicians
happy 137th birthday Harry!!!
houdinis 137th birthday!!!!!! whoooooooo!!!!!
Happy Birthday :)
Wow 137 years are you old and so much persons know you!! :D
Thumps up pls
Houdini is immortal magician!!
Hey any one know where I can get Houdini footage to use for a music video....
houdini once said "life is like a pair of hand cuffs, even the fuzzy pink ones need a key"
I think if Houdini saw this video today he would be proud.....over 1 milolion people who came to watch it
HAPPY BDAY HARRY!!!!
Wow, That was fast!
As funny as it looks, it is intentional. Houdini regularly performed the rope and chair escape throughout his career, and later wrote about it in books for other magicians.
Happy Birthday Harry!!!
nice work
nice! :)
the best ever!
happy birthday harry!
Happy birthday for Houndini, I wouldn't know that without google.
Houdini, um gênio!
Why did I not look this up earlier!?!?!
Houdini is amazing
i love houndini
Haha I like the music :D
Extraordinary
the trick is that he keeps moving during they tie him, so the knots are not solid at all, so he can escape easily
HAPPY BIRTHDAY HARRY HOUDINI! :)
Harlem shake would go perfect with this!!!!!
Wow, that was the fastest I've ever seen anyone fall asleep. Ha.
crazy good
happy birthday harry
It's probably the time he did it in. Besides this is the early 1900s. I'm sure people would've been amazed.
ok now i know how to get out of being tied really tightly onto a chair, go crazy and fall on the floor. check.
The trick to that (the being tied up with a rope trick) is that you have to make yourself big. I mean, you have to flex your muscles, inhale so your chest is bigger, you know, make yourself bigger. That way, when their done tying you up, you can relax to your regular size and you'll have enough room to wiggle free.
happy birthday houdini!
Special kind of rope that is easy to wriggle out of.
I think Houdi was the first person I ever realy idolized. I wanted to be like him.
life gave him lemons and he raged. LOL!
Great magic
does any one know how they tied him? i wouldnt mid trying this
I don't think people really grasp the difficulty of this feat. Houdini would often do this under a minute, even dislocating his joints just to easily escape. I think most people escape him to do something a magician would do, and Houdini did do some feats that would classify him as "illusionist," but Houdini's main line of work was as a stunt performing entertainer. He was more out to do things very hard to do, all in record time, in shoulder-dusting fashion.
When Houdini arrived at the Garrick Theater in Detroit, Michigan, on October 24, 1926, for what would be his last performance, he had a fever of 104°F Despite a diagnosis of acute appendicitis, Houdini took the stage. He was reported to have passed out during the show, but was revived and continued. Afterwards, he was hospitalized at Detroit's Grace Hospital.[36] Houdini died of peritonitis from a ruptured appendix at 1:26 p.m. in Room 401 on October 31 (Halloween), 1926, at the age of 52.
@antonpower00 when does the come back part happen
wow! we miss him
i think he had super skills but he was an great magician too...
houdini is too cool omg
COOOOOllllllll ! :D
I should remember you that he lived in the translation of the 19th century to the 20th.
that time, his 'magics' were amazing. if YOU invented your magics and noone taught you the 'magics', you - almost shore - wouldn´t be better.
TY ERB
Happy Birthday Houdini ! :'D
he's great!
I hate the adverts. What a nuance.
This is skills! xD
cool to see thanks for posting. houdini definately bigged up the escape ie i can believe they were local cops tieing him up. however he also was a master cheat tho id like to think this was a genuine pure skill trick.
Anyone else laugh when he fell off his chair? LOL.
un maestro...
hey!! my great great great? grandfather learning the ropes :D
Houdini should use some magic on the top rated comment and replace "then" with "than".
when does it start?
what rag is this?
Great video! Do you happen to know the title of the piano music that accompanies this clip! Joplin? It fits the magic act great!
happy birthday Houdini
happy 137th bday boss
o.e
im jealous of his skills :']
happy birthday harry :)
