I think so too, the contestant has to be easily suggestible. Derren kept pounding the table, and clicking his pen, imitating the sounds and gestures of pushing the button. So it wasn't just negative suggestion.
Here's an idea I didn't see mentioned in the comments. Perhaps, he convinced her that the cat would be electrocuted if she did not push the button. All of the distractions served to confuse her and by the time she's left alone she can't remember if the button kills the cat or prevents it from being killed. Countdowns are usually associated with something imminent and negative. In the final moments she's forced to make a decision about what she thought she heard. It's hard to pay attention when the stakes are high. A follow-up interview would have been interesting.
Agreed. It's likely there was some suggestion / hypnosis before she entered the room where he firmly inplants in her mind that she is to press the button at one second. He may have even said to ignore everything else once she enters the room. All this other stuff then becomes misdirection. It's a classic Derren trick to tell/suggest to the audience the method is one thing (clicking the pen, regression to childhood etc) when in reality it's something different. Film it a few times with different people and select the one it worked best with.
It’s a paid actor; they are just trying to show the psychological hypotheses of Darren Brown and others. Please don’t think this it wasn’t a paid actor
He was using negative psychological pressure. Telling her things like "Don't press that button" or "Draw me another cat". He was trying to pressure her into focusing solely on the button and succumb to the urge to press the button instead of just leaving it alone.
Do u see how hes clicking his pen, and slapping the table. He slapped the table to imitate a button there, and was clicking the pen to show her its satisfying
I feel like this would only work on a specific type of person susceptible to mind tricks like this. If I was in this situation I would just "well ok, I'll take this chair, drink my soda and chill for the 5 minutes"
I wish I could do something like this. Watching other people, you think "Oh, it would be easy, just don't press it" but I wanna experience what the people in Derren's videos experience to see how I would react then
Bucket Of Randomness Neither would almost any other person, regardless of regression tactics. I’m pretty sure that they told her to push the button in advance
He regressed her back to a more mischievous and rebellious state, and left her alone with the command “whatever you do, don’t press the button” to linger in her mind
@@spurdosparde8197 Derren Brown doesn't fake his stuff. He does these experiments with hundreds of people, and very few of them actually succeed. After that, they just pick the best successful one for TV.
The orange squash was chosen as a very powerful sensory link to her childhood. Most adults don't drink squash, it's something most people were given as children. The same with the drawing. Even the way he was talking to her "do you want to write your name at the bottom as well? Then we know it's yours" - talking to her like a child. Her concentration is mainly on drawing, so she would be most succeptible to this influence. We are watching this situation detatched through video recording. She is in it, with no hindsight. Furthermore, she has probably been pre-selected through a previous series of tests to narrow down the most easily influenced people. This is not staged. It's real.
Amy B he used negative psychology which is when you say don’t do something and they automatically want to do it. Like when you say to a child don’t touch that pen, even if they didn’t want to Touch the pen the child will want to touch that pen because they were told not to touch the pen and they are so focused on that not touching that pen . Well it’s the same with that woman he made her think of when she was bad as a kid and did something she wasn’t suppose to do. He made her feel that feeling again. Then he put a timer in the room, so then women’s mind automatically thinks to react before the timer goes down (press the button) and with her thinking don’t press the button over and over it cause her to push the button. so basically no matter how much we try and not do it our brain reacts before you

R3AP3R that’s not tough that’s emotionless. Tough means you have control over your emotions, so you don’t display them in times where you don’t need to, or having the will to keep moving or doing even if you have to fight your emotions
I'm sorry, I don't fully understand why she had the urge to push the button. I get that the power of suggestion is powerful, but it has its limits. You can't use suggestion to make person to do something that they are morally against doing. The girl clearly liked the kitten, so I don't see what made her disregard it. I was trying my best to play along and put myself in the place of her, but the only thing I could see that would manipulate me might be the timer, since it would trigger urgency, but I couldn't understand what else would make her want to push the button. At first, I thought he was using subliminal messaging through sound, but apparently there wasn't anything like that at play. I guess the only way to know is to actually be there.
"You can't use suggestion to make person to do something that they are morally against doing" Actually you can and it happens all the time. Are you always 100% of the time doing what you believe is morally correct? Has anyone ever convinced you to lie? Cheat? Etc.
It'sArturs z She didn't want to see it die so much she pressed the button in 0.01 So she didn't want to kill it she wanted to play with her but she didn't want it die so she pressed it on the last second you see her crying she likes the kitten
Sgt Pug Obviously you have never heard of, or learned about mental manipulation. He put thoughts in her head, and twisted them, so in some form she will do what he intends her to do. You can avoid this, but it takes strong mental stability and other functions in the brain that exceed the average. If you isolate yourself in a corner, you will worsen your situation
Elyas Gaming If you were clueless of what was going on you probably would have done it. I am not saying it is impossible to not kill the cat. But it takes strong mental fortitude.
Just A Person what Derren is doing is not manipulating the girl. She knew it was a show so she would’ve known he was trying to manipulate her therefore she would not press the button. Besides, derren has faked his shows before. This is either fake or she is mentally unstable.
i don’t understand. it’s so easy to not kill the kitten in the first place, but with money on the table as well? it just doesn’t make sense. this seems fake.
You dont want to but he psychologically pressures you into pushing the button. She seemed like she loved the kitten but she was curious enough to touch the button
I still can't understand why it is so hard not to press the button. I know about the tendency to think about the things you're trying to avoid thinking about (something like the ironic process theory, I dunno), but once it comes to hurting others or _doing_ something in general, I can't see why it is so hard not to! Thinking about something is waaay less controllable than actually doing it. Doing (or not doing) something is much easier to control. And I don't think that the clicking of the pen, the slamming on the table, the authoritative vibe, etc. are enough motives to do that.
Bucket I believe that it was because if the time went out it would kill that kitten idk i really wasnt listening all i knew she would get the momey if she didnt kill the lil kitty😍
It’s all about being in control of your thoughts and your actions. No one knows you better than you. It’s also having an awareness that actions come with consequences.
2:44 i think around here is where Derren started hypnotizing her. It looks like she starts acting child-like from this point on; the giggling and fidgeting.
Darren brown is an actual genius. He knows how to get in your head, and let the curiosity get the better of you. My god, what a fucked up show. (But in a good way.)
A random person that likes mEmEs I know but, I would want to keep it and, I wouldn’t have known so even if I didn’t it if they conducted the test again the cat might die.
+fatsamcastle intersting - if you read his books he is not 100% sure people can be hypnotised even though its what he started out doing. Its more being compliant in a suggestive state as the expectation of going to a hypnotist sets the scene etc
Yeah, except that's kind of the point. The whole video is focusing on how negative suggestion can affect such a resolve. You can tell that the lady loves animals, she broke down crying after she pushed the button, thinking she actually killed the kittens. She kept thinking, just like any other person with integrity, "I can't push that button, I'll kill something". However, we see how the guy, Derren Brown, uses that to his advantage when using negative suggestion on her.
Gossip Flick me as a cat lover, even the THOUGHT of someone risking a kittens life, it makes me very sad and puts a hole in my heart. That kitten is a beautiful creature and I would rather put myself in that box and have the button pressed, since I know what’s going on, vs the kitten who did nothing wrong at all.
Everybody has their own choices and mistake, who would not press the button for a 500 pounds, damn! Would hella press the button not even a minute. I sound like a piece a shit right? Now I'll say this. A button that would kill a kitten but a button that would end world hunger, both makes you a piece a shit since its about "LIVES".
"In this box contains a cat. If you press this button, the kitten will receive an electric shock, killing it" Peluchin Entertainment: *Spams the button*
Patrick Neave I am American and I understood this perfectly. Please don't assume that just because one person didn't understand that a whole country is stupid. Thank you.
Paul Chrisholm How dare you assume that I am stupid???? You don't know me, I can bet you don't know americans if you are agreeing with this Patrick Neave guy, so how can you know that I am stupid? For all you know, I could be the most successful person in America right now. Now, I'm not saying that I am, but I suggest that you don't go around accusing people of being what they aren't. I am not stupid. I do not want to start an argument; if you reply to this, I will not be responding.
Actually, with £1000000, I could invest it in passive income generating assets and use the dividends to start animal welfare charities to save millions more pets as well as high kill shelters to eliminate verminous cats that endanger rare bird species. The only reason why anyone would not kill a kitten for that amount of money is because they really are stupid and wasteful, especially with their money.
I’m a dog person but if I was given a choice to kill a cat or not then hell no- it’s like killing a dog because both are loved in the same ways as people
I literally just searched the comments to see what happened because I have really bad anxiety and this scared the crap out of me. Why did I even choose to watch this.
For anyone wondering, he’s really good at playing with people’s minds. He sets the woman’s mind to press the button and that’s why she does it. Many people are saying that they wouldn’t do it but they don’t understand how you would feel if you were really there. One example of this is where he slams the table. He does this because he wants the woman to think about pressing the button. This leads to her caving in and pressing the button in the end.
Gee thanks for the likes. This is my first comment to get over 100 likes. I just want to say - liking someone’s comment makes their day. Anyone who has had this happen to them knows what I mean. I’m not editing my actual comment because I don’t really like it when people do that. Anyway, thank you! (This was long Ik)
softie msp she didn't kill the kitten. I'm pretty sure this was a scientific test on how easy it is to psychologically bend someone's mind into doing something. It wasn't her fault nor his, and the kitten isn't dead.

R3AP3R that’s not tough that’s emotionless. Tough means you have control over your emotions, so you don’t display them in times where you don’t need to, or having the will to keep moving or doing even if you have to fight your emotions

Double Jump Gaming it’s a reality show when she’s put to something she’s never done so no they didn’t do multiple takes
LILMONSTER 829M why would you even kill it. You get money if you don't plus an innocent kitten gets to live?
I guess the only way to know is to actually be there.
because of the negative social repercussions of killing a kitten on tv, i'd need at least $200000
"You can't use suggestion to make person to do something that they are morally against doing" Actually you can and it happens all the time. Are you always 100% of the time doing what you believe is morally correct? Has anyone ever convinced you to lie? Cheat? Etc.
Peer pressure
Perhaps she felt it was her duty? I feel bad… mentally weak or not knowledgeable perhaps

??? the kitten wouldnt die... SHE killed the kitten. if she letted the kitten live, it would've survived.
i mean it did live, but still
the cat didnt die tho
It'sArturs a I would not do it cus I like my kitty cat
This should be such an easy challenge, if you're feeling tempted, just step away into a corner and then think about something else, my gosh
but the other option is so tempting
Sgt Pug Obviously you have never heard of, or learned about mental manipulation. He put thoughts in her head, and twisted them, so in some form she will do what he intends her to do. You can avoid this, but it takes strong mental stability and other functions in the brain that exceed the average. If you isolate yourself in a corner, you will worsen your situation
Just A Person I wouldn’t kill a cat for anything. I am a animal lover and a zoo keeper. I am a professional with big cats especially.
This is the definition of living in someone’s head rent free
i don’t understand. it’s so easy to not kill the kitten in the first place, but with money on the table as well? it just doesn’t make sense. this seems fake.

If I had to do this I would NEVER press the button even if it was tempting.
I would never do that what the heck oh my god
I would immediately kill that piece of shit
Oh, sure. That's what the lady thought too.
You had one job: Don't kill the kitten. ONE JOB.
the job was actually to kill the kitten
Nope! The job was to not kill the kitten! Killing the kitten kills the kitten! She failed!
But that job didn't give her pay
killing it did
Everybody has their own choices and mistake, who would not press the button for a 500 pounds, damn! Would hella press the button not even a minute. I sound like a piece a shit right? Now I'll say this. A button that would kill a kitten but a button that would end world hunger, both makes you a piece a shit since its about "LIVES".
Neurotic not a job. More of a test
The actual trick is convincing the audience that any of this is real.

Even £1000000 isn’t worth it to kill a kitten 🤦🏼♀️
10 miljon? Are you stupid? You can buy so many kittens with that!
Cheezcat Gaming well, if they wanna do it, can’t stop them. But if it was human, you wouldn’t mind

Well it was just a psychological test, the electricity was not connected to the kitten and it was safe!

Same though I was shook I just had to look
For anyone wondering, he’s really good at playing with people’s minds. He sets the woman’s mind to press the button and that’s why she does it. Many people are saying that they wouldn’t do it but they don’t understand how you would feel if you were really there. One example of this is where he slams the table. He does this because he wants the woman to think about pressing the button. This leads to her caving in and pressing the button in the end.
Yup!
Bravo! 👏

im actually crying, weather she killed the poor baby or not, this whole idea that the cat is even just in the box is awful
softie msp she didn't kill the kitten. I'm pretty sure this was a scientific test on how easy it is to psychologically bend someone's mind into doing something. It wasn't her fault nor his, and the kitten isn't dead.
