    The strainer is a great accessory, very useful.
    The best aspect of this cooker is that it is completely storm proof!
    I've seen so many stupid boil tests on kitchen tables that don't mean a damn thing when you're cold, tired and hungry and your fancy propane stove keeps blowing out, or losing its heat, or worse still, tips over with a dinner ration you can't replace on the trail. Forget the three and a half minutes to boil water in the kitchen. The Trangia is bullet proof; a little more weight for total peace of mind in all conditions, on any surface.
    I love my Trangia :)

    I have both the 27 with the kettle and the 28 (Trangia mini) which is great for solo day hikes. Great bits of kit and will last a lifetime.
    Great video.
    When using tge strap have the buckle on the bottom to reduce scratching.

    The tea kettle is my favourite. It's just the right size, works well with other cook gear, and looks great. Kind of a luxury item, but so was tea, once upon a time.

    "You can't have too much gear, in my opinion." I wholeheartedly agree with you sir. I have tons of stuff, some of it I've never used. But, it's there if I need it! Great video btw. Thanks for sharing!

    That's a great set-up. This is the kind of gear that gets my wife out on the trail. It looks perfect for couples, easy to use. Thanks for the breakdown, very helpful. It might not be ultra light but you can't complain about the weight, even with the accessories. I hope we can see this set in use! Thank s for posting this.

    A plastic IKEA placemat/thin craft cutting surface cut into a circle that fits into your frypan will protect your non-stick and give you a cutting board, too.

    Nice review.
    Can I just add something that is useful on the model 25 that you may be able to do with the 27.
    When the kettle is placed in the middle of the cooking pots and packed into the stove body for storage it can be clamped securely in place to stop it rattling. Put the kettle in as normal, then fold in the three arms/supports. If you now rotate the kettle one of the folded supports will clamp into the raised base of the kettle handle and lock the kettle in place :)

    At Campsaver today it would come to$145.28 plus tax. as I have it set up. But if you piece it together like I did its not such a blast to the wallet. Also the basic Aluminum is not as spendy. Thanks for watching!

      You can also get one with a non anodized windscreen, which is fine and cheaper. I bought a trangia 25-2 and a knockoff. Came in at a little under the price of the fully anodized set and i got two whole kits, and swapped the trangia pots for the anodized knockoff. Lava endurance 400 stove works perfectly, but some of the lesser ones like the Alocs, robens or ferrino are okay too

    • @TomsBackwoods
      @TomsBackwoods  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is a little room for a few satchels of tea or coffee in the kettle. If you purchase the bag you would have plenty of room for everything else. I found that 30 F and lower the snow warmer kit is a great help

    Hi! I am fairly new to the system and I found your video very informative and interesting. A quick question. Difference between normal aluminium and anodised in practical terms when it comes down to cooking and cleaning? And how robust? That would be very helpful. Thank you for taking the time to do the video and share it.

    • @TomsBackwoods
      @TomsBackwoods  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Anodized aluminum has a none stick quality to it. But its not totally nonstick like Teflon . But it is easier to clean burned on stuff and it makes the aluminum more dent resistant. I would buy anodized over straight aluminum any day if I had the option. Thanks for posting!

    That’s a complete looking kit! How has the ha coating held up? Trangia has just rereleased the ‘Duossal’ line of pot sets. The Duossal has aluminum outside but stainless steel inside the pots and pan. It makes for an extremely durable and scrubbable surface. The hardness of the ha surface is often touted as one of its selling points. Have you found the ha surface to be scrubbable and durable?

    • @TomsBackwoods
      @TomsBackwoods  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Hard anodizing has held up great over the years. The nonstick pan has held up well but has one small nick in the nonstick surface. It doesn't effect cooking at the moment but I could see it getting bigger for the years to come. The duossal might be a good option. Im thinking of buying the pan and trying it out.

    I was given to understand that hard anodized was not strictly speaking not-stick like a Teflon coating is but it is 'almost non stick'. The benefit over Teflon though is that it is much,much harder wearing and will not flake off into your food over time.

    • @TomsBackwoods
      @TomsBackwoods  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its my understanding that Hard Anodizing purpose is to protect the aluminum and has nothing to do with a none stick coating.Some think that cooking on aluminum is bad for your health and that the aluminum scratches and dents to easily.Hard Anodizing fixes this while keeping the weight to a minimum.Trangia Offers a Teflon coating on both bowls and fry pan in separate kits on there web site. Thanks for watching!

    • @presterjohn71
      @presterjohn71 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      TomsBackwoods Hard Anodising is not meant as you say designed to be non stick it is by happy coincidence almost non stick though. That was the point I was making.

    • @johnbrewer856
      @johnbrewer856 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yep, hard anodized is 'pretty much' non-stick. Most of your modern, quality kitchen 'non-stick' cookware is hard-anodized aluminium. It is a process (ie a surface modification, not a coating) so there is nothing to flake off, and it produces "industrial sapphire" which is pretty hard and slippery. You can use metal utensils, but they can still scratch through the anodizing if you aren't careful so plastic or wood is still better. Unless you have rough kids using knives and forks to scrape and stir, it is a much better surface than the bare aluminium.

    After (just over) 5 yrs, how's the teflon finish, on the fry pan, holding up? Nice set, btw. I have the 27-7 model.

    • @TomsBackwoods
      @TomsBackwoods  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Its not to bad. I have one tiny spot that has flaked off but hasn't gotten any bigger yet its about the size of a pens point. I'm keeping an eye on though. I have the Stainless steel version now.

    I have been debating between this kit and the 27-5HA with the non-stick pots. What I am wondering is if the HA pots are at least somewhat non-stick or would getting the non-stick pots be better? Has the non-stick surface on your fry pan held up? Thanks for the great video!

    • @Braapncamp
      @Braapncamp 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Steve Allison Yes, the HA pots and frypan are somewhat nonsticky. Works well!

    • @TomsBackwoods
      @TomsBackwoods  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have the non stick pan but yes he HA pots seem to work well for non stick. The cooking surface has held up well but the underside has a huge burn spot that you can expect from the burner. Still works great! Im thinking of getting the 25 for the bigger pots and pan for car camping. Great kits!

    • @Braapncamp
      @Braapncamp 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      TomsBackwoods I have a 25 Duossal with a larger optional frypan with nonstick. Bought this 18 years ago for family hiking. Works great! kited with both alco and gasburner. Later years i have complemented with a 27 all HA with multifuel burner X2, a Mini Trangia (28) and a Swedish Army stove kit in new condition from surplus, just hade to get it since it has been popular, works lake a champ and I had it when i did my service in Army. Should do a video about them with comparison ;)

  • @techguy9023

    Does the hard anodized seem thicker or sturdier than the ultra light aluminum version? On some other ha cookware I have ruined some by burning food in it. Any experience with burning food?

    • @TomsBackwoods
      @TomsBackwoods  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The hard anodized is definitely sturdier and is the main reason that its used. It makes aluminum sturdier and gives it a none stick effect but nothing like Teflon. I have not burned any food but it depends on the burner that you are using. The Trangia can be controlled and adjusted but it takes practice. I have cooked steak, eggs,popcorn, pizza and many other foods with good success . But learning the burner and the simmer lid is the key .

    You said that you kit weighs in at a pound point 67 ounces so is that 16.67 ounces or is 22.7 ounces because the how you stated it sounds like it could be either but I you mean 16.67 ounces if you could please clarify it would be greatly appreciated. On a side note is that you should not use metallic cooking utensils with Hard Anodized cookware or with the more conventional teflon non-stick surfaces additionally non-stick cooking surfaces should never be heated dry that is to say they should have either a little bit of oil in them or liquid of some sort and this includes when you are going to cook a foods like bacon or hamburger that will render off fat as they cook. While I have never used this cooking set I would ditch the plastic pan shields and in their place put a couple of paper towels or even cotton dish towels. I have a cooking set I put together and I use cotton towels as pan separators because besides protecting any non-stick it also helps to eliminate any cookware rattling when hiking additionally save the paper towels you use to wipe cooking fats and oils out of you pans when cooking and even ones you use to wipe your yap when eating and store them in a zip-top baggie they make great campfire starter. I also use the real nice dinner napkins when camping instead of paper towels because the store flat inside of a zip-top baggie and they double nicely as TP (the bonus about them one napkin can take care of you most all times and they are soft and smooth if you know what I mean Vern)

    The slight curvature of the baseplate... wow that looks like a defect to me. Very unusual for Trangia. I watched some video's on the Trangia website, and they are very specific the strap buckle should be on the side, just above the strap slot. I do not know why? If you or anyone can offer an explanation I would love to know. Anyhow, thank you for a great and informative video. Next two mouse clicks after comment will be Like and Sub. :)

    If you had bought the other set you would have had the kettle come with it, buying it that way you pay threw the nose as indivual items.

    • @TomsBackwoods
      @TomsBackwoods  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      CharlieTango 1 Originally I didn't think I wanted the kettle and it was just added weight. I bought the kettle as an after thought. As far as I know you still have to buy the other accessories individually so there is no big money savings on them and ya its pretty obvious that Trangia makes a kits that come with the kettle but its really no big savings.It just depends on the type of kit that you buy. If you have a small budget there are cheaper kits.

    You say "2 or more people". But if it's the 27-series, it's for 1-2 people.

      I could cook for 3 people or several children easily with mine. I think its more of a suggestion than a rule but its up to you.

      I'm just quoting their literature (Trangia's).

    Nice review and all, but I think youre confusing non stick with Hard Anodised.
    Hard Anodised isnt non stick, its there to help stop scratches.
    Its actually worse for cooking on than the basic Aluminium version because it heats up slower (the coating reflects heat) and less evenly and uses more fuel but its very durable.
    The actual non stick version is good but delicate and scratches quite easy, but heats up faster than the other models and more evenly and you can cook without using any fat or oil and it cleans really easy even with cold river water.
    The basic aluminium is still good but is decidedly middle of the road.
    It needs oil to cook most things and scratches fairly easily but its pretty hard wearing in that it dosent have any sort of coating to lose like the other 2 and its usually far cheaper.
    I went with a basic hard anodised set in the 25 with a kettle and. Bought a non stick fry pan seperately.
    Thats the good thing about trangia, lots of cheap spares.

      Thanks for your comment and opinion. But no I'm not confused. My Kit came with one nonstick pan and two hard anodized bowls and wind screen. After 5 years of use and hundreds of meals prepared either car camping or backpacking The pan's nonstick coating has held up great so far. The bowls are in great shape with no dents or scratches thanks to the anodized coating. While the hard anodized coating is not nonstick it does help with food sticking to the bowl .But I mainly cook sauces or gravy and rice in them. While the bowls might heat up slower than plain aluminum I have found them to heat up evenly. I have found the same thing to be true with my hard anodized GSI pots as well. Of all my cook kits this one gets used the most. I'm looking forward to many more years of use.

    If the weather is so cold that you cannot light your stove because the fuel is too cold to light, then how is the cold weather attachment going to work? if it uses the same fuel that the stove uses? Don't get me wrong,I love the Trangia system but this seems like a pointless bullshit add-on for gadget geeks.

      I would assume that you can light alcohol on a wick at lower temperatures than you can light a pool. It seems to be true for carbon felt wicked stoves I've used. I haven't seen the need to buy that either since I switch to carbon felt stoves at low temperatures for this reason.

      I'm not sure what Trangia had in mind but I carry a small 1 ounce container of fuel in my pocket to keep it warm. That way I always have warm fuel for priming and my other fuel can be out in the open or where ever. FlashGeiger may be right as well. Thanks for watching!

      +TomsBackwoods have you tried a rolled up piece of tissue placed like a wick into the fuel to light it in cold weather, works a treat here in the UK.
      Great vid
