    Just beat Reverie not too long ago. It breaks my heart every time Rufus talks about how he is not on par with his father. War crimes aside, he has already surpassed his father in every way, I am glad Lapis was able snap him out of it.

    Masterfully done once again. Happy to hear we are not going to get videos that are this long, it's also probably better for the algorithm for you. You're a hidden gem of a TH-camr

      Llyod > Rean. I wished there was more about Llyod. He is my favorite Main Lead.

    Amazing video as always! I think Reverie is a very good ending for Cold Steel and Crossbell. I myself just graduated as well so I understand the need for a shorter video. While I usually like the longer format video but a shorter would be cool too.
    I also love your video on the music of this series. I don’t know why I take Trails OST more serious than other series’s. 😂

    To be fair, Lloyd's route isn't the only one that is a rehash of older games. Almost the entire plot of the game is. For example, in Rean's route alone: We get tested for no reason; Olivier is missing with no evidence; Terrorists underneath Heimdallr; Border conflict in Nord; Climb Mishelam Tower for the true villain reveal; Surprise! It was Ishmelga all along; Rean confronting the same character flaws for the 5th time. I could keep going. Even the Rufus route has us find a homonculus in a briefcase, and all routes combine for a 3-pronged assault on Crossbell before the final dungeon rises in the distance (again just like Azure). Possibly the weakest story in the franchise, but fortunately the main story is only like 20% of the game (and everything else around it is fire), even if 80% of this video is the main story haha. Also, nice use of One Who Bears Fangs At God!

    Thanks for the summary. The writing of the Trails series was not my taste, it was a chore for me to play the game. A lot of fillers and hollow conversation, yet I still need to complete them to play the next Daybreak series. I think the writer is trying to be cool with all the politics and life meaning, but in the end it was a drag and become convoluted.
    The Sky writing was better, easy to grasp, straight forward but still has character and plot depth. Cold Steel is like an edgy highschooler trying to come up with a cool story.

    I was so burnt out by the end of Reverie so I came looking for a recap/summary. You hit the nail on the head on how the series is so unwilling to let some of their characters just simply die. Building up scenes of supposed death just to bring them back half a game later cheapens the experience as a whole. This is why I enjoyed Sky/Zero arcs better as the writing is much more tight. That said I'm looking forward to fresh new faces in Daybreak.
    Thanks for the video btw!

    Thank you for this video, I was a bit sick of how stretched out Rean's arc was so I did not play Reverie despite C looking like a a good arc. Great video and format :)

  • @Naraku203
    @Naraku203 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Great video but I disagree that Rean depression should have ended in cs3 because every ending was a bad ending for Rean until cs4 so if he got over it then that would be fine also I can say I have read stories that handled depression better like Tokyo Ghoul manga and he also got over his depression at the end of the story when he is 23 and when the story began he was 18

    • @BLACKDISC
      @BLACKDISC  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I can definitely agree with both sides. The entire story of Trails of Cold Steel would have to be fundamentally changed if the pacing of Rean's character arc shifted.

    • @MrDiomedes1977
      @MrDiomedes1977 ปีที่แล้ว

      I dont think Rean is in depression mode...he ends CS having to flee and be separated from all his teammates and what they did build the whole year...thats rage and despair, not depression. As soon as he gets up he starts trying to fight back, and thats not depressive behaviour. End of CSII is a mixed bag, they "won" but they lost...lost a teammate, have been nearly pawns, and now specially Rean is bound to colaborate and obey Osborne government as military students so he has lost really a lot, but he is not openly depressed, he keeps going and makes some difference in Calvard and North Ambria, graduates and becomes instructor...theres something weighing on him and he has some problems with his ogre powers and keep not valuing his life much, but he is not a depressed character. End of CS3 he is utterly broken though, they have been absolutely destroyed and he has lost himself and transformed in a propiciatory sacrifice. CSIV is how he crawls back from that and in the True Ending he makes just that. Reverie just ciments that.

    • @Naraku203
      @Naraku203 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Trails has always used a type of Dere trope for their characters and Rean is a Utsudere in cs1 he is sad about what his family had to go through because of him in cs2 he tell his sister he don't have the right for people to be kind to him in cs3 he say he hate his life in cs4 if you do the bonding event with Laura you would know that he is then looking for a place to die

  • @tayman50
    @tayman50 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Thank you for providing the spark notes of Reverie! While I love this form of your videos, I think I'd find a more focused analysis of the characters, themes, and narrative more interesting for insights. For example; commenting more on your thoughts around the inability to kill off certain characters (Olivier comes to mind, thinking about the possible narrative developments of Schera, Alfin, and Cedric).
    The Freudian concept of the super ego was an absolute banger interpretation/analysis and I'd love to see more of that in future videos (if possible, I know life is creeping on you).

    • @BLACKDISC
      @BLACKDISC  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I agree that focusing on analysis over summarizing would be more fun for everyone. I'll be doing more of that for the Kuro video next year. Thanks for watching!

  • @Ghalion666

    Thanks for the video. Though I don't remember getting the impression that the tower was going to blast the party at the end because its targetting system was re-written to target what is the target of the most hate. I got the impression that something, somewhere on Zemuria just so happens to be hated the most by the people overall, and then after that is blasted, something else will be targeted, and then something else, over and over again until nothing will be left because there will always be a little bit of hate for something or other in everyone's hearts.
    As for Reverie, I was really hyped about it because I liked the format in sky 3rd too. But i have to say that I just found myself enjoying Reverie's daydreams less than the star and moon doors in 3rd. Something about them just felt a lot less impactful and significant. Also, why is the dungeon music for Tita's daydream so damn awesome, and then they don't use that music for anywhere else?! It's a damn shame lol.
    I also felt that reverie for like the first portion of the game, like, up until you get to explore the corridor or something (or I guess up to fake mcburn), was significantly more difficult than other cold steel games, and then after fake mcburn, the difficulty just kinda became standard because the player power level goes up quite quickly after that point. It's where you start getting the best accessories, new quartz that are better than old ones, etc. Not to mention you're very limited on master quartz up until that point. But yeah I felt like the game's hard was like other cold steels' nightmares, if not worse...early on only. Later on I kill bosses before they move alot of the time, and that's without even intentionally using cheese strats such as infinite moves, instant cast artes, 1-shot domination s-break/lost artes builds, etc.
    I do feel like Lapis/C/Nadia/Swin's story was definitely the highlight in this game, and hope we'll see more of them than the SSS or class 7 (though I wouldn't mind seeing Altina later, I always found her to be an interesting character). I rather like the dynamic of Rufus and Lapis of how Lapis is so fond of him and not afraid to show it in the slightest, and how Rufus now has a recently-discovered epiphany that the people who care about him matter more than his old goals of surpassing his 'father'.
    One thing I wish the game had in terms of gameplay though was.... It has a massive party roster, and you are forced to use some characters on and off, and you probably have to spend an obscene amount of time gearing and building up many characters.... I do wish that the Reverie corridor had large portions where you had to/got to make USE of this multiple party member gear/build investments and do things like the dark dragon dungeon in CS3 so that you could enjoy all the build varieties of many party members.
    I also rather liked how sky 3rd had random valuable equipment drops from enemies throughout the game, stuff much better than store-bought items for a chapter or two. I find that more exciting than Reverie's gacha thing where most of the gacha stuff is either materials to invest into something big, cosmetics, or OCCASIONALLY, you get a super good endgame quartz/accessory. Plus the fact you get materials for best gear more often than the gear itself kinda lends itself to the whole super-invest in your favourite 4 praty members and neglect the vast party you COULD gear up thing I mentioned earlier.
    I think, if possible, Reverie could be an amazing game in terms of replay value if someone figures out a way to modify the game so that you could just have Reverie corridor like Ancient cave in Lufia 2, where you start at level 1, and EVERYTHING is gacha based, including starting equipment, and ALL the party members (after a first guaranteed 4 or something) are gacha rewards, not just the 12 or so that are in this game (I forgot hwo many were gacha). It would be so awesome.

    • @BLACKDISC
      @BLACKDISC  ปีที่แล้ว

      The Lufia 2 system you mentioned would be so much fun in Reverie. I hope someone can find a way to mod that in! Thanks for watching!

    I had so much fun with post-game content here and cannot wait for the Calvard Arc. I'm so tired of Rean and playing the finale to this game made me realise how much a lot of it had dragged. Thank you for pointing it out because I could not figure out why I was so dissatisfied with that section. Still, loved the Rufus stuff, easily one of my favourite Trails characters!

    In some of your gameplay snippets, I can see you are using turbo mode, and during the dialogue sequences when it's on, it looks like you have auto text advance on but the text boxes don't advance super quick.
    I am on cs3 on PC and when using turbo mode I really can't have auto text advance on at the same time or else the text boxes go by way too quick.

    You know, i feel like the person writing for Rean, is a huge Ichigo Kurasaki and Naruto Fan, like how Ichigo kept having all these powers added to him throughout the entirety of Bleach, and same with Naruto.. So i can see how Rean always gets blasted for being too much like a "Shonen Protagonist" which is whatever, I like Naruto and Bleach, so I think Rean is a pretty badass dude..

    I really liked this installment, just not as much as the prior entries. I felt like they wrapped up the story really well in Cold Steel 4 for that cast, so they really should have put more emphasis on Lloyd and C, because interjecting Rean and crew makes it feel like the Boruto of the trail series

    I just started playing Kuro and i was so colossally LOST that I had to go back and watch a Hajimari summary xD Kiseki is truly the only games series I know that has homework.
    I'm also thoroughly done with Rean as a character. I hope we never see him again. 5 games definitely was enough and i already like Van more than him after only 10 hours. (Maybe because I'm 34 and the teenage self insert wish fulfillment really got on my nerves by Cold Steel 3...)
    Anyway, I'm very interested in seeing what Falcom will do with all of the still dangling plot threads in the Calvard arc. Will the whole Elysium thing have any relevance? Or was that just a plot device to get all the characters together? Like. I am SO confused. XD
    Edit: I'm not lost because i didn't play the other games. I did play all of them. Started with CS 1 and 2, then went back to Sky 1 and played chronologically from there. But man. The amount of info in these games is insane to a degree that i literally cannot keep all of the plots and characters straight across arcs. Maybe I'm an idiot. But there need to be more summary videos like this one x.x

    I haven't finished Reverie yet, but I love Erebonia and the Cold Steel games the most out of the others. Cold Steel 1 was one of the first jrpgs I bought 3 years ago, which made me a big fan of jrpgs and Falcom. I then realized I must have missed something when I suddenly got to play as Lloyd and Rixia in the epilogue. That's when I found out I had to play the Liberl/Crossbell games, and I've been on a great journey ever since.

  • @rogerbabin8175
    @rogerbabin8175 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Just beat Reverie for the first time.
    I think I'm finally tapping out on the Trails series. I didn't like the direction Cold Steel was headed and while CS3 was amazing...CS4 was bad. Reverie had the chance to scale things back but instead it quadrupled down on craziness. This game feels like watching Star Wars Episode 9 where suddenly tons of technological advancements happen just to tell whatever story you want.
    Look how far tech has come in three years game time. The world is a mess where anything can happen and its all explained with technobabble. To be fair...many JRPGs reach this point in the last 30 minutes of their games...getting so high end and high concept that its easy to lose stupid people like me. Trails has reach that point for a little while now and its still got something like 30% of its story to tell yet.
    Its a shame because I'm a trails fan. There's even stuff in Reverie I loved...the opening prologue and the first act with each group was awesome. Plenty of great character interactions took place throughout the game as well. I actually really grew to like the C route cast of characters a whole lot. But the main story has become a chore to follow and has lost me. I love the start of every Trails arc though....when things are small scale and we learn about the world and characters and cultures. But Calvard games will have to catch up to this stuff and quickly...and given the last 10 games it will have to go well beyond this.
    Reverie gets a 4/10 from me. There's stuff to like...I started this game at a 9/10....but it just completely lost me over the course of the journey to the point where I forced myself to the end.

    The character’s name is Lloyd? Like Tales of Symphonia pfft lol 😂 that’s funny I like this game.
    -_- yes I’m glad they use Norse Names…since I’m pagan these are exciting to see that everyone can use their own creativity for use of the gods names and legendary weapons
    To be fair Frued is not the only one you could relate that type of psychology to Carl Jung as well especially when you come to the subject of Individuation
