One of the best characters of the Cold Steel saga I'd say is Altina. Who could have imagined that emotionless antagonist in Part II would grow into one of the cutest relationships Rean has ever had? I teared up in the credits in Olivier's wedding because of her. Part of this is because I saw the suicide attempts George, Claire and Lechter made more seriously. If these people never cared at all, they would have played the villain part without feeling anything, but they did. The regret, the guilt, the remorse... how could any sane person forsake all their relationships, their bonds in order to bring about the Great Twilight without any shame? Altina was spared all of that when I saw her enjoying the wedding among the throngs of her friends and comrades without reserve. Whoever sent Altina to Class VII be it Alberich, Osborne or some random administrator did a damn fine thing for her. A damn fine thing. They didn't only save Altina's life, they saved her soul. One more thing I want to point out is how Valimar weaponized the power of friendship. Yes, it's a cliche, but it's a cliche well integrated into the mecha fights. All the Divine Knights have a special ability. Ordine has its super mode, Testa-Rossa has its Thousand Weapons, El Prado has its shield, and etc. Valimar has the ability to turn the bonds of its Awakener into its strength. Rean had his comrades from Old and New Class VII, and Dreichels had his 17 Nord friends, Roland Vander, Roselia Millstein, and Lianne Sandlot. You, I and Dreichel's all know how potent that power could be. That's why he was utterly untempted by Ishmelga's promises. How could friendless wretches like Alberich and Ishmelga ever comprehend Valimar's true strength?
what i hate about these games is that everybody in your party has to speak no matter what. even if its everybody just saying "rean" its unnatural and cheesy to force everyone to have a dialogue just because they are there lol
I am actually glad you touched on Cedric. I think his arc has the potential to clap super hard. There are too many scenarios in cold steel that feel way too clean with people being forgiven or just let of with light punishment or you know the absolute pull out of the ass from certain death. I wish there was more dynamics between the heroes and antagonists then the typical either you are comically evil or you are my friend regardless of you plunging the entire world to the brink of destruction. I want a few character relationships that just become unrepairable. The fact that Cedric realizes how much burden his decisions have caused everyone and him needing to learn how to stand on his own two feet has me really excited for what they could do with him. I pray Falcom doesn't just have him come back, be pardoned, and act like nothing ever happened. I also would like to see if Cedric has an effect on Shirley long term as well.
Glad to see some love for the Juna speech at the start. Its actually pretty controversial among the community as many thought it should have been Sara to give the speech.
Ah, I could see why people would want that. I definitely feel like having the 'new generation' (new class vii) push the 'old generation' (old class vii) is a lot more interesting than reiterating cold steel 1 and 2 party dynamics.
Really? Because Sara actually does do motivational speeches. I think in all games? Including IV at the end. She usually gets laughed at by the rest because she is a whimsically character, rarely taking anything serious. So no one takes her too seriously when she does it. The only time she didn't get laughed at when being serious is in III which she confronted her countrymen at the fortress. Juna is a much more serious and 'straight' character and Lloyd jr. to boot, so it makes much more sense her giving the motivational speech. Plus Sara is by this point more a member of class VII rather than an authority figure far above it. She would be down from the events at the Gral as much as the rest of them.

kinda hate that in this game and reverie, Lloyd still has some character arc, meanwhile Estelle is just kinda there because bracer. even Agate and Tita get more character development than Estelle and Joshua in these two games.
when you said "juna is the only protagonist with both parents still alive" i kinda wanted to say something about that, then i realized that Rean is adopted by the baron couple, and Rean's mother / osborne's wife is killed during the raid LOL

It's honestly insane how much effort was put into these games, but they're often ignored by casual audiences. Not saying casuals are bad, but it's a shame that some diamonds get ignored

LOL, we had the same feeling when we play this game. i was wondering throughout the whole game "Yo, we are going to have a WAR between TWO GREAT COUNTRIES, shouldn't we prepare our weapons or something, instead of doing THESE MINOR QUESTS?" or something like "YO, why would we need to waste our time by saving our 'still-sane friends like angelica or icy maiden' instead of preparing to save the world?" still a great game tho. one more thing, some of the fights are UNNECESSARY, agree with what you said
In summary to some of your thoughts. I'm always surprised some people actually enjoyed Pom Pom party, as someone who 100% the game and beat all opponents, it was just not very fun in comparison to Vantage Masters which remains great. New Class 7 being the protagonists was something I was OK with, but I was also fine with more Old Class 7, so I was fine with the halfway point they reached, where New Class 7 were closer to being Main characters with Old Class 7 being closer to side characters. As for Juna being the protagonist, I liked her segments, and was never unhappy when she was made lead, but I do enjoy Rean being lead more, as it felt like a stronger continuation of the existing story. In regards to the plot, I'm honestly surprised you had problems with following it. Since you listed them I always found it pretty easy to follow the Phantasmal Blaze Plan, Operation Jormungar, the Rivalries etc, all of it generally followed, also even while they were doing things like retreating, Rean outright mentions sensing all of the others coming before they retreat etc. I'm honestly shocked you did find it hard to follow. Honestly my issue with the general plot of Trails in general is more how I sometimes find it cringe inducing on just how optimistic Trails is in general, especially with how much can be blamed on the curse, despite the fact that things like Hamel would barely stand out IRL honestly, as we have far worse atrocities, that being said it works for the series as a whole, so I'm not going to disparage them on it much. As for the game revolving around going to places to talk to people, and then moving on, it honestly didn't bother me at all, and is likely part of what I enjoy about Cold Steel as a whole. Still going through the rest of your review, so I'll update/reply to this as I get through more later.

Do you feel like the Great Twilight as a plot device poisons the well for characters that are effected by it? I can't take the motivations of someone with evil black smoke coming out of their bodies seriously, and that feels like an L for a series that has historically done such a great job on making the smaller-scale politics and people effected by them believable.
Just finished Reverie. Going back through all these Trails videos made me truly glad that many people loved the series. There are downsides here and there but I think that falls on the subjective matter. Anyway, good analysis! I 100% agree on the bonding events for my first play through I found some clear data online so I could just start with a NG+ and having unlimited bonding points. Personally I feel the games are just so much better when you can see everyone's bonding events.

There's a war about to start, you need all hands on deck. This is the assembling of "the avengers" or whole marvel spectrum, so to speak. But that's just my opinion. Thanks for an awesome video!
14:53 I liked more the old class VII, because I had a stronger connection with them. The had more development time in the previous 2 games, and we got to know them in a more personal way through their time at school and through the field trips that led us to their homes and families. I also think that old class 7 is more relevant for the world of Zemuria, given their backgrounds... we have the heir to the Reinford Group, the heirs to high noble houses, ex jaeger with ties to important figures within those groups, the son of the governor of Heimdarl, the son of the most important general in Erebonia, etc. And I also feel as if old class 7 had more quality time dedicated to their development, even if their group was bigger than that of new class 7... perhaps it's because Cold Steel 3&4 were more focused on story development, than on character development. The thing is that my final Dream Team was formed by Rean, Laura, Alisa, Ema, Fie, Jusis, Musse and Juna. My favorite character from new class 7 was Juna, with Musse at second place; Altine was cute, but bland, Ash was too arrogant for my taste (but in the end of the game he showed he truly cared a lot about Rean), and Kurt was meh. 1:00:54 I thankfully got the chance to play the true ending immediately after the standard one, because I was shocked by it. I refused to accept that Rean could go like that... but I admit thtat the bad ending was masterfully played by Nihon Falcom, becaus it all happened too fast and I really wasn't expecting it, given the positive nature of everything surrounding Class 7 up to this point. In a way, I believe this bad ending was the true ending of the saga... the happy one was a gift they gave us all and a mean to justify the further expansion of the Erebonian Arch. PS: I didn't know that in order to unlock the true ending one had to play every sidequest in the game... I thought it was only linked to Tova's Sidequest, which had a high probability of beign ignored given the moment it emerged in the game.

thanks for the recap. I could never bring myself to finish IV. turns out i was almost at the end so I didnt miss much. I loved the first two but as soon as it started to become more "supernatural" I lost interest to a degree I couldnt continue. I wished the series wouldve stayed a normal political war/intrigue kind of story through the eyes of young military recruits. But the Japanese always have to push in some weird over-the-top-paranormal story element at some point. Maybe Ill do the whole series again once the following ones come to PC
I love this game, but the end almost ruined it for me. The build up in CS2 and CS3 all got undone and it was as if the game turned into a fairy tale which would have worked if the last 2 games did not have life-changing events for the characters. I would have loved if some events in CS3 was kept going into reverie and see how they affect the gang. Really looking forward to Trail to day break, i hope the characters there are half as good as the ones we got so far 😊
I got halfway through the game gave up play the rest of the games in the series with the old games love them came back and feel little need to revisit the previous half of the story it is just all unnecessary interactions not respecting player
After the crossbell saga, this arc of Cold was terrible for me. I almost gave up on Trails, I could only play the first Cold, the rest I saw better on TH-cam, and I still felt like I was robbed. I can't believe Cold and Crossbell are from the same playthrough. I hope Reviere improves the thing
cs4 act 2 is exactly the same as cs2 conceptually. but executed much better. not a great execution but much much better than whatever cs2 did for one it didn't make me drop the game. as for the juna speech , i didn't find a problem with juna saying it. what i had problem was how the speech itself since it seemed "harsh" especially from juna herself . but its a small nitpick from an otherwise good act.
Like you're videos on cold steel. Could you do a character tier list or a character guide video for specific characters. That'll be really cool if you shared you're opinion on those topics.
@@BLACKDISC it’s just such a good series but it’s kind of hard to explain without spoilers, but it’s a sort of episodic in a sense that every chapter is in a completely different place and time although everything lines up perfectly, it uses perspective of different characters very well, seeing the same story told from multiple perspectives and finding the truth of the mystery by linking them all together is one of the most satisfying parts, lots of emotional moments because of how well fleshed out and relatable the characters are. Also it has the best music out of any media I have ever seen, each song portrays the emotion in the scene it’s played in perfectly. It’s just a perfect mystery and the plot twists are unexpected and satisfying, Great art aswell. I could just totally see you making a video essay on it (if you decide to read it)

@@BLACKDISC it’s just such a good series but it’s kind of hard to explain without spoilers, but it’s a sort of episodic in a sense that every chapter is in a completely different place and time although everything lines up perfectly, it uses perspective of different characters very well, seeing the same story told from multiple perspectives and finding the truth of the mystery by linking them all together is one of the most satisfying parts, lots of emotional moments because of how well fleshed out and relatable the characters are. Also it has the best music out of any media I have ever seen, each song portrays the emotion in the scene it’s played in perfectly.
It’s just a perfect mystery and the plot twists are unexpected and satisfying, Great art aswell. I could just totally see you making a video essay on it (if you decide to read it)
