I thought you did a great job of separating the facts from the sensationalist headlines. It's crazy how few people do that in journalism in general as we've seen this week a few times lol
I'm sure we talked about there already being a Disney of videogames, and that being Nintendo. It makes sense to think that, as long as the Disney is small enough to be grabbable (or being perceived as such), to be THE PRIME ASSET in the content wars (which is what Microsoft tries to fight for with the other content distributors - what they already called before their competitors).
Great episode. That email really made me worry about the future of the gaming industry. Microsoft is a multi-trillion dollar coorperation, compared to Sony and Nintendo, who are tiny in comparision. Sony and Nintendo combined market cap isn't even 10% of Microsoft's. It will be really interesting to see how gaming evolves in the next 5-10 years.
I wouldn't worry about MS at this point. That email was before Zennimax and ABK. After ABK I don't think they'd even attempt Nintendo for the next 20+ years. If someone is going to buy them it'd be a Apple, Google, Amazon, or some big deal with a media company for IP rights. Remember to sell Nintendo and it's board have to be willing.

Right between Kyle saying "swarm of bees" and the car honk sound effect, my brain immediately went to that one vehicle from Vigilante 8, lol. Additionally, I do think PC gaming is definitely on the rise in Japan, but that's more on the rise and influence of Vtubers, like Hololive and Nijisanji and definitely feels more leaned towards Steam.
My relationship with Xbox: it‘s as if one lover loses feelings and a breakup is creeping in. You pledge, plead and try to convince with half-assed promises… but the love is gone.
The idea that they're considering ARM for next gen I still think would end up being monumental if it ends up being true. But the lack of any context and the wishy-washy pairing with AMD x86 cores on the same line as an equal possibility. They still haven't figured out Windows on ARM I kind of can't believe that 50/50 chance is even still true to a certain extent.
Haven't they figured out Windows on ARM a while ago? Convincing devs to port there and users to buy an expensive Windows device that can't run most of their games is another matter though. As for going full ARM-console with "we have emulation/streaming for backwards compatibility"? Seems likely.
@@GeorgeNoiseless Well, those other matters are the things that they need to figure out. And if devs aren't making games for ARM on PC, its not going to easy to just move the console business to ARM. Possible? Absolutely, Nintendo figured it out, but Nintendo isn't relying on all of their key games launching side by side with PC either. And there are a load of other issues (especially with how ARM performs in the desktop space at the moment) that could be possible roadblocks. I think the fact that they are considering it at all to be quite notable, and at the moment that's all we know, but its hard not to feel like "...huh really? now?" either way.
MS is working on a completely streamed Windows desktop, so they might figure why not have that on ARM? Maybe sell desktop Windows in Full-Local, Hybrid Cloud and Full Cloud options. If new X games are fully ARM-based well maybe you can run them locally if you have some kind of potential future x86/ARM power rig. Maybe you're _forced_ to stream future X games on PC if you don't have the right hardware, MS would love that! Maybe they insist you move your desktop to ARM and stream your old x86 apps, maybe the other way around. Not saying it's good or particularly pleasant for us, but it sure looks like a plan they might have. @@Ben-do1bf
Further context into phil spencer's email: a member of microsoft's board of directors slowly acquiring shares of nintendo is not the same thing as a merger. It could influence the decisionmaking in nintendo but ultimately wouldnt result in a merger because that operation (unlike the abk merger) would actually be blocked by antitrust authorities looking at the home console market segment.
The discrepancy between the Xbox brand and the product is something I've been talking about for some time now. I just don't know what the appeal/brand is even supposed to BE at this point. It has ZERO identity to me, which is shocking to say, considering how much I loved the original and the 360. Is the identity/brand Game Pass? It's the only real distinction they have, but it doesn't feel like a SIGNIFIER to me (furthermore, I just don't personally care for it. I only have so much time to play games). This sucks, because I badly want a reason to own a Series X, due to the hardware. But even the one game most closely associated with the Xbox brand, Halo Infinite, doesn't take any specific advantage of the hardware, and in fact, exists on other platforms in better forms (PC). Ever since the XB1 generation I keep asking myself: "Why IS Xbox?" Doesn't seem like we're any closer to that answer, even with all these acquisitions, TBH
If the brand/identity is Gamepass, which can be played on mobile phones, refrigerators and washing machines, as Phill insists on advertising as if it's a good thing, than I have zero reason to keep my series x. Phill and MS are ignoring their most harcores fans, the ones eager to purchase their "most powerful console". The same ones who are taking the least amount of benefits from this transaction
@@Leitefsj Yeah, it seems like they're trying to anticipate the future market (again) in a way that just isn't satisfying for a lot of the base that identify with the Xbox brand now (whatever that is). So, if you don't care about Game Pass, investing in the ecosystem makes no sense.
I don't know... I think you're right, but that maybe is a good thing. At least for me. What identity had the xbox brand in the 360 generation? It really doesn’t need to do or be anything else.
They want Game Pass to be the new Xbox. And they are trying to get their Xbox users to integrate into it while letting Game Pass be accessible everywhere. Microsoft wants to be the Netflix of gaming and is looking for their Marvel IP that Disney found back in the 2000s. The problem is they can keep spending money but there's no way to ensure the IPs they are buying will still be as popular in the future as Nintendo and Sony's first party since they are so off hand with their teams ever since they made Bungie leave because Bungie was afraid of becoming only a Halo gaming development team. What I find funny is the notion that Nintendo are on this untouchable ivory tower and they just laugh at all that is happening around them in this industry, when in fact, they are pissing their pants if the Switch 2 turns into "Wii U Part 2" type of scenario. In 1999 they declined Microsoft's 25 billion dollar offer and reportedly "laughed Microsoft out of the room". So I doubt that even if Nintendo fails next console they'd want to be bought.
