Thanks Jan! Yeah, I told him if was borderline unrepairable from a cost standpoint, but he loved the reel, so...

Quite the Master Class on the Clash reel! Thank you. Really thorough. I watched this and then tackled my Clash 2500 sucessfully. You are a champ.

Good morning and good job. What do you think caused the catastrophe damage inside that housing, poor quality or abuse? And, why do they design reels today with a secondary anti reverse dog when it already used a roller bearing? Also where do you get your parts, Penn or another source if you don’t mind me asking. I don’t live far from Mystic Island Nj. 😉
I’m glad to hear that even with everything you needed it was coat effective to do the repair. Sorry for all the questions. Have a great weekend.

Thanks Steve! Great questions! He didn't give me the story behind what he was doing when it happened, but It was either the drag was so locked down when he was snagged, and he used the handle to try and break it free, that the weaker gear/post gave out.... or there may have been some imperfections in the gear that caused it shear under load.
Regarding why the secondary gear, I think it was an experiment in design to try and stabilize the play that just having a crossword has due to the spacing in the block when it rides on the post, or the vertical "flex" that happens naturally. I'm not an engineer, so these are all just speculations.
The secondary dog makes sense, considering the tendencies of most fishermen (myself included).... that a/r clutch is flawed, by design, because it is in such a vulnerable spot... hard to keep water from destroying it, so you need something there, in case it fails... especially if it isn't checked/serviced regularly.... of the big three, Shimano does the best job of protecting this area. The instant a/r creation was spurred by fishermen wanting a more instant a/r.... think back to the days where aftermarket ratchets with 10/12 teeth were made for the 9500SS.
I just got off the phone with Mystic, actually. I use them for Penn parts 90% of the time. Of the places that source Penn parts, I've found them to be the best. The speed, accuracy and customer service they provide far exceeds any possible savings one can get elsewhere. They're the only place I would recommend if you're in need of Penn replacement parts.
Have a great weekend... check back tonight or Saturday for another video... not sure what I'll post yet, but it'll probably be a short reel repair one. Spread the word about the channel.

@@TSGReelService Well thank you very much for taking the time to type that very detailed reply. I really appreciate it, I learned a couple new things. I also agree with everything you wrote about mystic, very nice people and service. I live about 1 hour away from them, they’re not far from Atlantic City. Actually I live closer to Philly (11 miles) just over the Delaware river in Jersey. Looking forward to your next post.

You're welcome and no worries. Rest assured, they're not always that long, 🙂
Yep, really nice place to do business with.

Putting mine back together and the dog keeps enguaging and not allowing the rottor spin any idea?

Thanks for checking out the video. Yes.... if you're sure it's the anti-reverse, flip it upside down and reassemble the reel.... not even sure how you would get the reel to fit together like that..... there should have been tightness in many places. If you're referring to the backup dog, rewatch the assembly section and follow it.... it's as detailed as it can be..... there's no more I can add.

Another interesting video. As far as I am concerned your vids are the go to for us self service guys.
I would like to see a vid how "you" shim a reel for gear lash, handle play.
Both locomotive drive train and worm gear. I think that would be a winner.

Thanks Steven! I've done those as part of other vids, but will try to put together something like that. Thanks for the suggestion.
