I agree with your gripes about not having Boston in this game; LA did have yellow when it came in the NHL. They changed to the black color later in 1988.
I was an Nintendo Ice Hockey kid growing up and played the hell out of that most days before my friend and I walked to school. the fact that this is the first NES game to represent actual NHL cities give this one a go.
I think he says "get the pass" and it looks like its a mini version of 'gradius' that you play during intermission awesome game, and as always great review!
Awesome game! I remember my friend had this and we'd always go to his and play it, the fights where the highlight for me, can't beat a good old school NES classic.
I haven't played a whole lot of Hockey video games but this is 1 I can definitely enjoyed & have downloaded it to the Wii in mid 2009. I remember when I was a kid, my Aunt & Uncle had an NES & this game was in their collection (probably another reason as to why I enjoy it so much). If I ever do get my hands on another NES console, I will definitely buy this game for it. Luckily where I go to buy classic video games, I saw a couple copies of this game for less than $5.00 a piece.
keep em coming man .. to me you are one of the best reviews i've seen , if not the best straight reviewer i think .. not out for laughs .. 1 game that killed meback in the day .. i think it was called shadowgate .. id like to see that one day :p
I used to play Blades Of Steel until all hours of the night in my younger day.Although we all knew it wasn't NHL endorsed,we still chose our favourite teams.
Love the reviews. The deadpan delivery is awesome. I'd like to see you do Super Mario Bros. 3 or some games on the SNES like F-Zero, Final Fantasy II, A Link to the Past, etc.
In Wyane Greatzky hockey on NES all the voice said was he shoots he scores on Sega Genesis the NHL games had no announcers but in the NHL games on Gamecube, PS3 and others the annoucers broadcast the whole game.
@shannonstamey Understandable! It's the In State Rivalry Both Teams hate each other, both Teams Fans hate each other, Just as long as the Fans try to not let things get out of Control then we'll be fine.
I'm playing old school Blades right now on my Wii. I always thought it was either "Take the Pass" or 'Make the Pass" or "Makes a Pass". Still haven't decided after all these years. ;)
If you shoot the puck on your side of the ice and it crosses the goal line, and the opposing team other than the golie touches it first, then it is called icing.
Dude, in 38 my older bro is 40. When we were kids we played ice hockey. So Blades Of Steel was a thing right. Sean was better than me on the ice and on the NES, one day I played hooky and got to stay home. I played Blades of Steel for HOURS! Fucking HOURS! When he got home I wooed that ass no foolin! He was so pissed he hit the reset before the team photo. I’ll never forgive him for that. Love my big bro but that I’ll take to the grave.
Screw that, here's a better question, why the hell is Vancouver in the game? I can understand Detroit not being in there cause they sucked back then (but we've won more stanley cups since) but what about Philadelphia, or Calgary? I can only imagine the only reason Los Angeles made it was because Gretzky was traded that year.
Now is it just me, or...in the intro (good ol' Aqualung song, heh), Mega Man using Metal Man's weapon, a steel blade...and the game's title, Blades of Steel...gee, do I see a pun in there, or at least some kind of irony? Or is it just me? xD?
the game wasn't officially licensed off NHL, so the teams you play aren't supposed to be representative of the real NHL teams of the time. The game just happened to have some of the same cities. For example, the LA team isn't supposed to be the Kings, just an LA team. The individual colors are the same for College and Junior as the are in Pro. They're just generic, nameless teams. Blades of Steel is the best sports game on the NES, along with Punch-Out!!
You're joshing me. It wasn't intentional? ...Am I seriously the first to see it, then? Damn! Well, I think I just killed several theories about me being unobservant. Hah. Cool.
I have a question, why does almost all hockey games for the nes have at least one american team the swedish hockeyteam colors. I hate it! I am from sweden and i just like to know(if someone have a answer)

I think the passing-voice says either "Pass the puck" or "what the fuck"!
I think he says "get the pass"

awesome game, and as always great review!

I've never been a fan of sports games but your revew makes this look fun.

It's "gets the pass." You can make it out a lot more clearly in the original arcade version.
Blades of Steel > NHL11. BLADES OF STEEL IS A CLASSIC!
keep em coming man .. to me you are one of the best reviews i've seen , if not the best straight reviewer i think .. not out for laughs .. 1 game that killed meback in the day .. i think it was called shadowgate .. id like to see that one day :p

man this game brings back some great memories
I like your reviews. No Non-sense BS approach. Straight to the point unlike The Nintendo Nerd. I'm an old-skool gamer and new Subscriber. Thanks dude
Love the reviews. The deadpan delivery is awesome.
I'd like to see you do Super Mario Bros. 3 or some games on the SNES like F-Zero, Final Fantasy II, A Link to the Past, etc.
You're right, Aqualung! Where is Boston?
Wikipedia actually explains the team colors and their origins. It also says that the guy is saying "with the pass".
@ExandShadow Also, Where's Pittsburgh?
Actually, way back in their early days, Los Angeles Kings used to wear yellow and purple
In Wyane Greatzky hockey on NES all the voice said was he shoots he scores on Sega Genesis the NHL games had no announcers but in the NHL games on Gamecube, PS3 and others the annoucers broadcast the whole game.
still got the original game and its one of my favourite nes games

I love Blades Of Steel. It's so much better than that NES hockey. Nice review as always Aqualung!
"WITH THE PASS!!...WITH THE PASS!!..WITH THE PASS!!" "Great, now you're raping my memory of Blades Of Steel!"
@BurnerMatch
"Passed the puck", I think. But I'm thinking "what the fuck?" trying to decode the bad voicing.
I think the better question is where is Houston
If you shoot the puck on your side of the ice and it crosses the goal line, and the opposing team other than the golie touches it first, then it is called icing.
lol only thing I could hear was "Oops I ripped my pants" XD
where's hocky town, detroit?
Good Call! Where's Beantown? lol

I always thought it was "flips the pass".
Good review. Everyone had this game, it seemed to be as popular as Super Mario Bros.
that game caught my attention too. i wonder if i played it.
Since when is Los Angeles yellow?
LA's first color scheme was yellow and purple.
Haha I always wondered what that announcer said, I always figured it was pass the puck.
@Yikith Those jerseys were awesome
"SHOOT THE CORE"
I love Gradius
I thought ice hockey was a funner NES game myself. The fighting and the music are straight up dope in this game though.
I admit, it still kicks ass.
What's the game at 0:44
That terrible whistling sound effect drove me crazy.
i liked ice hockey, but this game is up there as well.
are you from boston?
No, but I am in Massachusetts.
@@AqualungGameReviews based
It's too bad Winnipeg isn't there either.
I've been playing the fuck out of this game latley and it's still as much fun now as it was back then!!
It always sounded like "Putt Putt Golf" to me.
more like "fuck the ass" to me
Or puff puff pass
I played this game obsessively in college.
This was the first game I got besides the mario/duck hunt that came with my nes.
The Detroit Red Wings are not a team to select either in that game. That sucks. Good review. GO WINGS!!!!!
another great review! keep it up

The guy from Weird Video Games thinks it sounds like 'Hit the pants!'
Now is it just me, or...in the intro (good ol' Aqualung song, heh), Mega Man using Metal Man's weapon, a steel blade...and the game's title, Blades of Steel...gee, do I see a pun in there, or at least some kind of irony? Or is it just me? xD?
lol @ the "Nice Shot!" steroids joke...
LA used to be yellow and purple they changed to grey and black later
@ExandShadow I Meant in the Game!
Awesome. Love it! Can't wait for more!

Blades of Steel is the best sports game on the NES, along with Punch-Out!!
When I was a kid I always thought the ref said "play soft"
"Gets the pass."
I always thought it was “press to pass” lol
Still not sure exactly what it mumbles
That had to be intentional. XD Or one hell of an irony. Either way, I gives teh props to Sir Aqualung.
WITH THE PASS!
For some reason I wanna buy Jackal now? Damn in game advertising! Cool review though.
I always thought it said Hit The Pass, but really who cares. It's still an amazing game to this day.
You're joshing me. It wasn't intentional? ...Am I seriously the first to see it, then? Damn! Well, I think I just killed several theories about me being unobservant. Hah. Cool.
