Nice bro, I appreciate your NES replays. I grew up in the same area Taunton, MA. These reviews are bringing back memories of growing up. I definitely want to buy a NES system but I doubt it would work properly
I dunno why but this was the FUNNIEST review I think I've seen from you Ken and I've seen almost all of them. The tone of this review almost sounded like you lost a bet and you didn't want to do the game but it was just too damn funny! Good job dude on this "quickie" and can't wait for the next one
What a way to close the video! You added your game rating right into The Daily Sun! Great video and review, as always! Your commentary is always priceless!
dude this video was hilarious all the way through. haha another awesome review!!! :) I will be sure to share this will friends and family, that should bring your funds up too
Funny newspaper edit at the end. XD "King trampled to death". Wow. Here's hoping you might one day tackle Super Paperboy on the SNES. I actually thought that one was pretty fun. (Though I don't think the Grim Reaper made it in - and in my opinion, ghosts are just no substitute!)
nice review as usual Ken, i wonder if your giving us little hints on some of your next game reviews at the end with the changed newspaper articles(zombies ate my neighbors, friday the 13th, mega man 9 or X)
I use to love sitting down as a young kid and playing this for 15-20 min at a time. Would always make my brother laugh at something I did in the game :)
The arcade game was pretty cool. It had a Bmx handle that you would push forward and pull back to speed up or slow down and you turn left and right to steer the bike. It had a button you would hit to throw the papers. Good graphics for the time too. Other than that it was an almost direct port
@therealhardrock From what I'm hearing, the sound effects only use square 1 and 2 and the music is just a triangle, I really don't hear any implement from the noise channel other than when the bike crashes, but that may be a DPCM
That guy at about 2:26 is suposed to be a breakdancer. That's what they arte in the arcade version, at least. The music from your emulator was messed up a bit. It's not the greatest, but it sounds better on the real console.
The reason why there's no percussion in the music is because the programmer assumed that the "noise" channel was only for sound effects and didn't realize that it could be used to create percussion. Look for "Famitracker" videos on TH-cam to understand what I'm talking about.
Nothing serious, but there is one more difference- the dog chasing Paperboy. In the arcade version, a Doberman chases after him. In the NES version, the Yorkshire Terrier (may be a wrong breed) replaces the Doberman.
@mikeyboombox oh and the "Zombie" one could also be a reference to Resident Evil that game also had zombies in it but I think "Neighbors" IS more likely! Me and a friend used to play that game(Zombies ate my neighbors) a lot but we never did beat it
i've been playing this on mame, but the better looking one, and even though you somehow land on your bike with a box over your head whenever you run over the gutter, i can't stop playing it
@Amisbro Oh yea good call with lion king! that def makes sense especially since hes done other disney stuff. Dude ZAMN is one of my favorite games ever, me and my buddy used to play it all the time on genesis it took us forever until we finally beat it, but man it was worth it
I always thought this game was hilarious, that dude exercising in his front lawn, smashing windows and gargoyles with your papers, running into cars, this game is so far from perfect but it is still awesome
for some reason I wasn't a fan of this game...well more like I wasn't a fan of the sequel on the SNES but this doesn't do it any favors. I'd love to meet the people that thought THIS was a good idea put them in a room with the Action 52 people and give them a good talking to! Other then that...great review man and can't wait for the next walkthrough
I played the hell out of this game as a kid, but playing it recently shows how badly it has aged to me. The arcade version is still far superior. At least it is not as atrocious as the other games Mindscape did like "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" and "The Terminator". Those really pissed me off. Mindscape also did that "Captain Planet" game too, so compared to those three "Paperboy" is at least a step up.
@mikeyboombox damn since you were naming the possible games you forgot the one for "king trampled in stampede: (Lion King after the wilderbeasts trampled Mustafa and yes I'm an old school Disney nerd :) )
I actually thought this game was pretty good (I can also say that for it's Game Boy counterpart). As far as the music goes, it definitely sounds better on the Game Boy. I've played both versions but only own the Game Boy version. When I bought my copy of the game (used), the clerk told me about the original Arcade version where you can throw papers at a robber or something.
I actually liked this game as a kid, although my goal was never to beat it (I don't think I ever knew how to beat it), my goal was just to create chaos and bring down the motherfucking apocalypse with my itty-bitty little newspapers. Ahhh, what fun little apocalypse's I caused : )
For some reason, the original arcade version might be my all time favorite game, but the NES version was definitely a let down. This review is hilarious.
But if it can't hold up to the test of time like such classics as Super Mario Bros., Mega Man and Tetris then there is no point to consider it in this day and age.
even death himself must intervene to stop paper boy.. reason- the entire natural order of things depends on said paper boy NOT delivering said news paper to said household, causing a collapsing rip between time and space thus creating an endless paradox resulting in the mass extinction of mankind.
I played Paperboy 2 on the Super NES, but never the original aracde version nor the NES port. It's more or less the same game with updated graphics. I'm surprised Mindscape actually made a decent port of this game when the majority of their NES catalog of games suck donkey balls.
You gave my childhood a C-?! I guess when I was 8 my critical thinking skills weren't up to par. I played the crap out of this. Not that I disagree with your criticisms...
"you don't have unlimited papers,you only have 10 so don't throw it like it's candy" and he throws 3 or 4 each time
Nice bro, I appreciate your NES replays. I grew up in the same area Taunton, MA. These reviews are bringing back memories of growing up. I definitely want to buy a NES system but I doubt it would work properly
Get one off ebay or amazon with the 72 pin replaced and it should work fine, although you still need to clean games and sometimes remove and reinsert
I dunno why but this was the FUNNIEST review I think I've seen from you Ken and I've seen almost all of them. The tone of this review almost sounded like you lost a bet and you didn't want to do the game but it was just too damn funny!
Good job dude on this "quickie" and can't wait for the next one
This was the best port in my opinion.
What a way to close the video! You added your game rating right into The Daily Sun! Great video and review, as always! Your commentary is always priceless!

there's something strangely hilarious about seeing a polygonal solid snake shaking around violently while hearing the opening guitar riff to Aqualung.
I remembered getting this game for a dollar or two on the NES in the 90s too. Never did have the patience to beat it though.
I use to love sitting down as a young kid and playing this for 15-20 min at a time. Would always make my brother laugh at something I did in the game :)

Aw that bit with the grim reaper! Hilarious!
@mikeyboombox I thought the same thing, although I'm not sure what "King Trampled to Death in Stampede" is referring to.
A curious classic. I still can't believe they actually devoted an entire Captain N episode to this. =D
That guy at about 2:26 is suposed to be a breakdancer. That's what they arte in the arcade version, at least.
The music from your emulator was messed up a bit. It's not the greatest, but it sounds better on the real console.
love this game! I can never seem to beat it... lol at the breakdancing guy xD
One game I've been dying to see you review - "Elevator Action."
Who ever thought the idea of delivering papers would turn into a classic NES game?
I had this one for Gameboy back in the day...Fun times
The reason why there's no percussion in the music is because the programmer assumed that the "noise" channel was only for sound effects and didn't realize that it could be used to create percussion. Look for "Famitracker" videos on TH-cam to understand what I'm talking about.
2:24 I swear the first thing that came to my mind was that scene in Clerks where Randal is talking about his cousin.
Nothing serious, but there is one more difference- the dog chasing Paperboy. In the arcade version, a Doberman chases after him. In the NES version, the Yorkshire Terrier (may be a wrong breed) replaces the Doberman.
@mikeyboombox

the arcade version of this game is a classic with great gameplay, graphics and music.
I played the arcade version when I was 9 in 1993 it rocked
Massachusetts, on the RI border though.
there shouldnt be any dislikes....aqualung has the best reviews Ive ever seen
4:33 nice shot! :P
I played paperboy at the midway arcade world in LEGO dimensions
i've been playing this on mame, but the better looking one, and even though you somehow land on your bike with a box over your head whenever you run over the gutter, i can't stop playing it
@Amisbro Oh yea good call with lion king! that def makes sense especially since hes done other disney stuff. Dude ZAMN is one of my favorite games ever, me and my buddy used to play it all the time on genesis it took us forever until we finally beat it, but man it was worth it
love the fake new paper headlines at the end. "King trampled in stampede" "Insane Masked man slays dozens of teenagers" classic!
when are you going to do paper boy 2 or any other paper boy game?
Tornado in town - Go out deliver newspapers
I was almost a paperboy in the late 80 early 90
Never played this version of Paperboy,but gameplay look quite good.
I always thought this game was hilarious, that dude exercising in his front lawn, smashing windows and gargoyles with your papers, running into cars, this game is so far from perfect but it is still awesome
i like how you do the 401k math i have this game though played it alot as a kid it wasn't easy!
Another great and funny review
hahaha! 3:10 You say don't go throwing the newspapers like their candy yet you throw like four at the house hehe
@timsalmons1982 same, a king being trampled has me stumped lol we'll just have to wait and see
Pat the NES Punk uses this tune for his videos.
The fad of break dancing represented in a classic video game looks like a guy attempting to blow himself. I wonder if my dad thought that...
I don't get the changed headlines at the end.
They were teaser hints for my upcoming reviews.
Insane masked man slays dozens of teenagers!?
I'm a postman and that's how my regular day looks like...
I loved this game when I was a kid. I'm going to buy a replacement for my new ones collection despite this review.
@TheTerrificTracy So we meet again!
i loved this game
It's a classic game
for some reason I wasn't a fan of this game...well more like I wasn't a fan of the sequel on the SNES but this doesn't do it any favors. I'd love to meet the people that thought THIS was a good idea put them in a room with the Action 52 people and give them a good talking to!

@MrSaturn97 What I mean to say by that is that it's pretty well known.
lol he sounds a bit like Billy Crystal! funny review!
this game to me should have been rated an a but thats just me
I agree
@mikeyboombox
damn since you were naming the possible games you forgot the one for "king trampled in stampede:

0:46 - What's that blue guy? A break dancer or a possessed lunatic?
This game was HARD!!!
No kidding, I could never get past the first level.
This paper boy retires after a week? He must have go a lot of tips.
I had this for NINTENDO
and for part 2 for
SUPER NINTENDO
2:26 lmao dude you are freaking super funny
You are hilarious. I laughed at the pervert guy out on the street . N on what you said lol.
@ZeroTheHeartlessKing LOL yeah.
But if it can't hold up to the test of time like such classics as Super Mario Bros., Mega Man and Tetris then there is no point to consider it in this day and age.
Good video! The arcade was a good enough game to waste a quarter in
WANT TO FIND DEADSNAKE1'S COMMENT.
5 HOURS AGO.
DAMN IT.
i didnt notice that XD
Now I didn't know it was a 1984 arcade game...so of course gamers like me were first exposed to the NES version.
@Megastar8271 you jinxed it XP
@mistertitanic Well, we are friends aren't we?
i bought this game for 3 dollars on the nes....real fun!
Dah dah dah dah,,
dah dah dah DAH!!!!
OH YEAH!
even death himself must intervene to stop paper boy.. reason- the entire natural order of things depends on said paper boy NOT delivering said news paper to said household, causing a collapsing rip between time and space thus creating an endless paradox resulting in the mass extinction of mankind.
Jethro Tull ^.^
so maybe they are. what now?
Aqualung is awesome
Good review, as usual.
But I hated this damn game growing up, & I hate it now.
@ZeroTheHeartlessKing ....Oh. DX
this game is trippy lol
4:39 what in a day the street is going to morf into,well what are you expecting different streets.....WTF
2:05

@TheTerrificTracy :)
The NES version was the most difficult.
6/22/2022
👍

ive played this before
I only played this game once, and it's freaking impossible!
wooooooooooooooooo
It is a HUGE letdown from the arcade version. I was highly disappointed by the NES version
2:22 to 2:33
😂
The games difficulty always ruined it for me.
@DEADSNAKE1 Nah, Aqualung was first!!!
YAY NO DISLIKES!!!!
You gave my childhood a C-?! I guess when I was 8 my critical thinking skills weren't up to par. I played the crap out of this. Not that I disagree with your criticisms...
Never played this game
