I'm working on an overview of the Mario series too, and I have to say, your description of how the game works is a lot more in depth than what I came up with. That and I give you props for being one of the few to actually review this game
Hell yeah man Mr.Bungle RULES! One of the times I seen them I was walking past the back stage door and they came walking out to get to the stage. Mike Patton came directly face to face with me. All I could think to say was "you rock". He just smiled and went on stage. That was right after they put out the album California. Awesome video man. I am going to go watch the other parts now.
Wow, good job! Everyone knows everything about this game, yet you manage to do a seriously interesting in-depth review of it :D Well ok... Not everyone know everything as it really surprised me that the 2-1 1up is available if all the coins in 1-3 are collected. I knew the warp pipe connection to it but I always wondered why I was able to get it sometimes even without warping. Nice to see that there are still some secrets that I haven't found out!
i like your style of reviewing especially the sarcastic jokes. I think all review should be like yours. Not forcing the humor yet very funny. Mr Bungle owns in playing mario songs
You said Mario was packaged as Maro/Duck Hunt. But when I bought mine back in '86 the game packs included Super Mario Bros. by itself and Gyromite. It also had the Grey zapper not the ever so popular orange one. I was just curious.
Let me just comment on what you stated about jumping into the blocks. I get that this is an old video, but just in case you didn't quite get it yet, notice how Mario's fist is higher than his head when he jumps. He's clearly PUNCHING the blocks.
I never noticed how the fish in one world follow you through to the next, OR How the Bowser is fake.. AND that each enemy posing as bowser is different...! Wow, very cool!
That was a very impressive summary of the game thus far; you seem to know a lot of the secrets! About the only thing you didn't mention is world -1 and how to get through it. Also, world 8 is the only one not to have any break points; even if you die close to the end of world 8-1, you start over at its beginning.
4:21 you can actually get your extra life (or as I and many other people I grew up call it, a free man) and go down the extra coin/short cut pipe as well but it's tough to do, there's a certain way to do it
@uberbrickmaster really? shows how well you know your video games when it comes to Mario. and yes Princess Toadstool was her original name. Just like Bowsers original name was King Koopa, Toad was just Toad and so on.
I used to think that Mario was bashing blocks with his head, but I honestly think that he's using his fist. If you look at the jumping sprite really closely, he has his fist up. It's still fun to think that he's using his head though. :)
@AqualungGameReviews I enjoy watching your game reviews. Do you ever think you'll do a review on The Legend of Zelda on the NES??? It's one of my all time favorite games on the NES.
Hey AquaLung, just wondering, since you didn't mention it, do you know about how to make the fireworks appear at the end of the non-castle levels(I do know, but I was curious if you did)?
You didn't mention that while some of the bloopers chase you, the rest of them are controlled by which way Mario is heading, so you can get them to leave you alone if you point mario in the opposite direction you are going.
KarmaJolt Well, he was called King Koopa in the cartoon. I don't remember anyone who grew up in the 80s calling him "King Koopa" when talking about the game.
Yes, it looks like his head would hit too. The sprite probably had to be drawn that way because of the limited number of pixels/tiles. I mean, lift your arm above your head.. It goes pretty far above, doesn't it?
Super Mario bros whas a game that I used to play in 1998-1999 .... I rememberd that playing that game was a challenge for me does days also when it get to the part when he's swimming it aswome...
The reason why in the water there are no power-up' is cuz you can't smash blocks here. For the enemy's the bloopers will die the same way as the fire ball but cheep cheeps turn into Koopa troopas.
This might sound real stupid but I never realized that if you shoot fireballs at the other 7 bowsers they turn into different enemies when you kill him.
Its not random - "If you touch the flagpole of any level with either 1, 3, or 6 seconds left on the ones place of the timer, you will get that amount of fireworks. For example, if you touch the flagpole with 126 seconds left on the time, you will get six fireworks" - Gamefaqs
ohhh gawd, i remember beating this hardass shit one time last life, small mario, everything.. just to have an ending that had me staring at the god damn screen hoping the game was NOT being serious with me..
I figure it's probably like with Street Fighter - while in America, we know the Alpha mini-series Guile "clone" as Charlie, in Japan he's called Nash, and his full name is...well, Charlie Nash. I think perhaps it's the same way here, especially as in the Japanese version of the Smash games, Bowser is called "Koopa" (as opposed to like, KING Koopa, or something). But again, just speculation.
You forgot the fireworks timing trick, where if you grab the flag when the time ends in 1, 3, or 6, you get that many fireworks, and 500 pts per explosion. You leave the to step, left edge, 3 ticks before desired number. (5 on most arcade versions, some 7). Also missed the (very pointless) -1 World.
its kinda confusing but you 'should be able' to pull it off..you have a hard time with it just smack the hidden block up here and hop up..lol i love your reviews!
That's what it does. Haha I remember when I was a kid I thought the extra life mushroom would make you incredibly huge XD But then I got one and just noticed I'd gotten some extra points.
Oh no, theres a trigger: It has to do with the timer. If the last digit on the timer is 3, 6, or 9, then the corresponding number of fireworks will go off.
actually, there is an easter egg. if you press A, B, select, start, and up, then spin around 5 times without wraping yourself in the wire, hop 2 times, and lick the power button in between levels, you can watch mario eating a snack and entering the bathroom, followed by a loud fart noise.
Rediscovered this channel after 10 years of forgetting about it since childhood. Man, what a nostalgia rush
I'm working on an overview of the Mario series too, and I have to say, your description of how the game works is a lot more in depth than what I came up with.
That and I give you props for being one of the few to actually review this game
"Port-a-Potty Castles."
I have to say that's the first time I've ever heard that one. :)
Great review.
I like how when he reviews the games he also gives a guide on how to beat it
This game is a freaking classic!
Sooooo why can't I beat the original NES cart of it?
Well...This walkthrough outta do the trick!
I've played the original NES cartridge as well, and I have never been able to get past the first gap on 8-4.
thank you aqua i would have never known what to do to beat this game, if it wasn't for you.
Wow, good job! Everyone knows everything about this game, yet you manage to do a seriously interesting in-depth review of it :D Well ok... You know, I don't think Mario hits the blocks with his head, he actually has his fist up.
Those are TREES!! I always thought they were funny looking cliffs.
Interesting tidbit about Bowser being disguised in each world as a different enemy.
i like your style of reviewing especially the sarcastic jokes.
I think all review should be like yours. Not forcing the humor yet very funny.

LOL at "porta-potty castle"
wow dude this review was sooo funny! just the topics you bring up and casually joke about are hilarious
If you position it right you can get the 1up and drop down the pipe in the first level.
I never noticed how the fish in one world follow you through to the next, OR How the Bowser is fake.. AND that each enemy posing as bowser is different...!
Wow, very cool!
Hell yeah! Let's see Super Mario 2 and 3 now!
Woah, that's deep! We should write a book about this! It could be several hundred pages long with theories, graphs, and testimonies. XD
That was a very impressive summary of the game thus far; you seem to know a lot of the secrets! About the only thing you didn't mention is world -1 and how to get through it. Also, world 8 is the only one not to have any break points; even if you die close to the end of world 8-1, you start over at its beginning.
This guy is so entertaining and hilarious to listen to!!
4:21 you can actually get your extra life (or as I and many other people I grew up call it, a free man) and go down the extra coin/short cut pipe as well but it's tough to do, there's a certain way to do it

Wow that a button trick I never knew about when I played this game. Good call.
It's one of my all time favorite games on the NES.
if only Jethro Tull made a version of the Mario theme
"Porta-Potty Castle" LOL
good taste in music. I also like New Day Yesterday because of its bluesy bass line
Hey AquaLung, just wondering, since you didn't mention it, do you know about how to make the fireworks appear at the end of the non-castle levels(I do know, but I was curious if you did)?

yes, if you look at a freeze-frame, you can see his fist is pointing upwards :) I always thought he smashed bricks with his head though :))
hey did you make the zeldadungen reviews too, your voice sounds familiar, please tell me
Don't the castle levels repeat over and over until you choose the right path?
6:22 they're called fire-bars :)
in world 1 you can actually get 1up and the coin bonus if ur accurate enough but the stage is better because of the flower
Not sure if Bowser was known as Bowser until Super Mario III. I think he was just called King Koopa or something.
KarmaJolt Well, he was called King Koopa in the cartoon. I don't remember anyone who grew up in the 80s calling him "King Koopa" when talking about the game.
If you ever decide to re-upload the original videos as one super extended video, it'll be every bit as awesome.
You can get the first 1up and go down the pipe. You just have to inch your way when you hit it.
That's what I always thought the mini castles were.Just restrooms of rest areas or something
Secret area in the clouds? Isn't that place called coin heaven?
@AqualungGameReviews What's the circumstances that would make that 1% happen?
Man u mad funny. GO AQUALUNG
Who does the title song for your reviews?
Yes, it looks like his head would hit too.
The sprite probably had to be drawn that way because of the limited number of pixels/tiles.
I mean, lift your arm above your head..
It goes pretty far above, doesn't it?
very sweet, keep um coming. Great review.
He doesnt hit the blocks with his head but uses his fist. Thats why he throws his hand up in the air everytime he jumps :)
hmm that's an interesting one. How the heck does THAT happen?
What's the intro music called?
super mario bros. is the #1 video game of all time. no joke
what are the lyrics in the opening? your voice rocks :OO
When i got mine for Christmas, it didn't come with any game, just a book that had tips and cheats for other games
Super Mario bros whas a game that I used to play in 1998-1999 .... I rememberd that playing that game was a challenge for me does days also when it get to the part when he's swimming it aswome...

Isn't his full name, like, King Bowser J. Koopa, or something? Meaning it's still King Koopa, but his "first" name is Bowser, anyway?
Ouch to Mario's fists then, though he also does the headbutt and punch combo as Super Mario.
Its not random - "If you touch the flagpole of any level with either 1, 3, or 6 seconds left on the ones place of the timer, you will get that amount of fireworks. For example, if you touch the flagpole with 126 seconds left on the time, you will get six fireworks" - Gamefaqs
@uberbrickmaster
Nobody has ever called her Princess Toadstoll, but I've heard her be called Princess Toadstool.
wht do the points do for u anyway?
You didn't mention the Minus World!
i wonder what the fuck mario does in those tubes
Mario takes so many mushrooms that he probably can't even feel his head.
Great walkthrough! =)
ohhh gawd, i remember beating this hardass shit one time last life, small mario, everything.. just to have an ending that had me staring at the god damn screen hoping the game was NOT being serious with me..

One of the best games ever made.
I love mr bungle too!
i think its random ( although it always seems to appear when you dont need it, like in a speedrun)
You forgot the fireworks timing trick, where if you grab the flag when the time ends in 1, 3, or 6, you get that many fireworks, and 500 pts per explosion. You leave the to step, left edge, 3 ticks before desired number. (5 on most arcade versions, some 7).

georgef551 Nobody cares about points in this game.
@chocolate11pie
The song fits the user's name.

Oh no, theres a trigger:
It has to do with the timer. If the last digit on the timer is 3, 6, or 9, then the corresponding number of fireworks will go off.
Whatever happened to king koopa
I stand corrected.
this was a class game
your a good reviewer i didnt know u can load your game buy holding the a button thanks im going to subscribe :)

Bloopers are squids, not Jellyfish.
I like your raview's
Mario doesnt get headaches, cause he smashes blocks with his hand not head.. :D
Yeah they have copies of mario AND duck hunt that came alone
kickass video
@Cthulu1985 Thanx.
Bro fucking love u and ur videos!!
actually, there is an easter egg. if you press A, B, select, start, and up, then spin around 5 times without wraping yourself in the wire, hop 2 times, and lick the power button in between levels, you can watch mario eating a snack and entering the bathroom, followed by a loud fart noise.
