Mon Jam (ม่อนแจ่ม) - Located just an hour from Chiang Mai city, Mon Jam (ม่อนแจ่ม) is an amazing mountain village known as Mon Jam (ม่อนแจ่ม), which is predominantly home to a Hmong community. One day, along with my friend Joel, we decided to take a drive to Mon Jam, enjoy some amazing scenery, fresh air, and delicious local Hmong Food from the mountains. #Thailand #travel #Hmong
We started off, and first enjoyed the amazing views and viewpoints once we arrived. Then we headed to the market to walk around. First we bought some fruit - they have a great selection of less tropical, and more fruits that need elevation and cooler weather to grow - like melons, citrus, and egg fruit. Fruit was incredible.
Located at the Mon Jam (ม่อนแจ่ม) market, we went to check out a restaurant in the parking lot. The ladies were extremely friendly, and we asked if they could cook us a local off-menu Hmong meal. They cooked an incredible selection of local dishes, including plenty of vegetables from the mountain, a chicken soup, and probably my favorite dish - a chili dip with lemongrass, chilies, and herbs to eat with blanched vegetables.
Total price - 440 THB ($14.03) including a few dishes not shown in the video
Di BOSCO Coffee Specialist (goo.gl/maps/LT...) - One they was back to Chiang Mai, we stopped at Di BOSCO Coffee Specialist, what is easily one of the best coffee shops in Thailand. The atmosphere, the location, and the coffee are all superb.
Samoeng (สะเมิง) - We took the long way to drive back to Chiang Mai, also so that we could have a circular route. Along the way back, we stopped quickly in Samoeng (สะเมิง) and visited the local market.
Visiting Mon Jam (ม่อนแจ่ม) makes a great day trip from Chiang Mai - offering fantastic views of the mountains, and some delicious local home-cooked food.
Thank you for watching, hope you’re having a fantastic day!

Yass!!! Hmong Pride!!! I’m so happy that someone finally visited the villages in the mountains bc they usually aren’t shown very often. Thank you for sharing apart of my Hmong heritage❤️
❤
I’m hmong, living in Minnesota and these foods are our tradition and everyday foods! They taste so pure and fresh as always. Just simple and delicious! Thank you Mark for sharing an experience with a Hmong community!!
I never tire of your friendship with Joel. Your friendship is my favorite to watch on TH-cam. You are both so genuine and kind. Thanks for sharing a video about my Hmong heritage.
"UA TSAUG" means thank you in hmong so ua tsaug for visiting the hmong people! I'm going to show my parents this video they are hmong born in Laos, they fled the vietnam war a long time ago to the united states and it's great to see you appreciate how the food is in the culture! Much love from California😊
Thank you so much Nancy, greetings to your family!
Yay! I’m so happy you shared some of my Hmong heritage with the world! I learned so much and I really appreciate you exploring different people groups. Sending you and your family healthy and happy energy from Menomonie, Wisconsin 💕
Thank you so much, hope you and your family are doing well!
So glad to finally see a "Foodie" appreciate Hmong cuisine. You rock Mark!
@@MarkAbroad u need to come to Belize to an island called San pedro❤
This makes me happy as a hmong person that you enjoy our way of cooking! Hmong people are all about herbs and vegetables! Thank you for supporting the hmong locals!
I never get tired of hearing Mark say, " Oh ... Wow" !!!
Haha Ron, nice one man :) Im with you. Right on.
Me too
And his face expression too
Really nice
Never ..Oh wow 😍
i really admire your friendship with joel. stay safe, blessings
AGREE 👍 Joel and Mark have their own unique styles & personalities both awesome! I would seriously happily ☺ pay to have them as my tour guides now that would be my dream come true, I love culture but most of all their foods!
I like how Joel used the fork to carefully scrap off the rice bits from his spoon before dipping it into the bowl for soup. Now that is proper manners. 🤗🤗🤗
❤
Im hmong living in california and We still eat like this! Fresh and easy dishes are the best!:)
I am looking for good Hmong food in LA! Help me.
@@RockstarEater there are no hmong restaurants in LA and the hmong restaurants in America dont serve the home cook meals you see in this video. They serve Thai, lao, and vietnamese cuisine
Rockstar you won’t find Hmong food in LA unless you know a family. Everything will be cooked at home with a blend of Lao, Thai, etc. LA is my hometown. Still got my family and some relatives there.
Rockstar... are you familiar with all the green vegetables the Hmong farm in central valley? There are few farmers who do sell their vegetables in LA on the weekend. I don’t know where but I can get you the info from a uncle that does My uncle does sell but he does it in SF.
@@hmoobmeeka Fresno is where to go. The Hmong own a lot of resturants in town, but mix in Hmong and Thai style. For instance you can have papaya salad with or without padaek sauce. Kao Piek might be classified as Laotian, but that too is in the simple style. Veg gardens are all over town. There are Hmong markets too.
I love watching Joel travel with Mark and his family. I totally think Joel is one of the few true hearted and trust worthy people in the planet. Love you guys. Enjoy and take care.
The best home cooked Hmong food will forever be the boiled mustard green and pork in my heart. So simple and delicious with a bowl of rice.
@arjin kn Lmao you're braindead 😂😂😂
Right. So simple yet tastes great, especially with some peppers.
I'm Hmong living in USA and I'm glad to see you enjoy Hmong food in Thailand.
Nyob zoo (Hello) Mark... Ua Ntsaug (Thank you) to you and Joel for spotlighting our Hmong people. Wishing you all great health. 🙏 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Awesome!
What a beautiful world we live in sometimes we forget that true beauty is priceless
Joel seems like such a chill and laid back dude!!! Genuine person.
Mark, thank you much for sharing a piece of our Hmong food and culture! And for always uploading all your love for food and the different culture! I know there’s a lot of Hmong people who watches you!!! And we love you for this! Much love all the way from Minneapolis, Minnesota! Thank you!
@2:45 when Mark sees a free-range rooster you know he's thinking of all the ways to cook it. 😀
As a Hmong person, I’m so happy to watch this video! Thank you, Mark! You’re awesome.

Love that Mark is branching into the Hmong community , especially when theres a big Hmong population in Thailand and Laos still. Thanks for letting the world see more of my culture, more of the Hmong people. Love it and appreciate it. Also love seeing Ying in ur video
More !
Mark hope you and the family are having a great day. Your passion for food, culture, and adventure is truly inspiring. Thanks again for all you do.
Btw I think the fruit you said looked like a peach is actually a nectarine.
Thank you so much Cam, hope you're doing well also!
Mark you getting old and you never disappointed in any foods
or exotic food or ask offense questions about foods you’re a amazing person who have a deep meaning in a food. LOVE IT❤️
Love watching your show Mark. The mustard green vegetable soup is my husband's favorite. I'm Hmong and he's Vietnamese. My 91 year old mom spoils my husband by growing this vegetable for him every year. I make the broth with fresh lemongrass and he just love it. He also loves the chicken with all the fresh Hmong herbs (tshuaj nrau qaib) We raise our own chicken and it is so much better than Tyson chicken 🤭 I'm opening my restaurant in 2 months and I am going to serve Hmong pho on the menu. A true authentic Hmong dish on a sunny day is Hmong cucumber with sugar (kaus dhib nrhog sugar) My mom introduced this to my husband and he loves it. He takes it to lunch anytime he goes to work in the ER. He especially loves it in the summer bc it's freshly picked from her garden.
Are you in CA? Would love to try the chicken soup
@@Kitkat_____ hi Kat. I'm in Ohio.
Thank you Mark for showing us Hmong some love. Been waiting on your video ever since Joel posted his. You're my idol.
Love the way you and Joel visit the same place but write in completely different styles!! Great stuff!! ❤️

Thank you Mark for your support and showcasing different cultures and their food. Keep up the awesome work brother.
The purple rice cake in hmong we call it "ncuav" perfect to eat during rainy season! Amazing with honey also!
What a pleasant surprise! How exciting to see your video feature Hmong ppl. I'm Hmong American and all too often, ppl ask what ethnicity I am, many times ppl never even heard of it. Our culture is within our ppl so thank you for exploring and sharing the culture. You're definitely 1 of my favorite humble TH-cam stars. Always looking forward to your videos!

When you’re happy to be Hmong and watch this video!
love to see the coffee shop ambience.......high ceiling...., and the best part is they serve local coffee!
im Immediately in a good mood when im seeing your smile !
Wow Mark! Those are definitely authentic Hmong dishes. Those dishes are served to guests and during special events as Hmong people do prefer to serve dishes that aren't too heavy or too oily. I live in California and our family still eat like that.
The food must be special to see Ying try to take the first taste before Mark!
Oh Mark...Joel...I can't get enough of their faces when they eat...thanks for sharing such great places and food...
Beautiful journey Mark really enjoyed it the view 👌🏾
Mark. I am Hmong. I am so happy you finally get to eat a true Hmong dish. Feeling soooo happy. Enjoy spending time with Hmong people. ❤️❤️👏👏
Brother Mark and Joel, i hope that the good Lord will allow me to eat at your table at least once when i get to heaven. you all have brought me such joy. I live in the nashville tn. area and i work a lifeless job....i dream of being able to travel and eat things from around the world but i guess it was not God's will that i do that. But i thank Him for you and your family's ability to do so, so that at least i can share your journey's through video's. I want to thank you for always showing kindness to everyone....i've never heard you say a swear word...that alone means a lot to me. i'll continue to pray for you and your friends and your sweet family's safety. Keep up the great work and may the good Lord continue to bless you and your family and friends. You too, brother Joel..It;s so good to see you in the videos!
we should all be as pleasant and humble and respectful for others cultures and eager to learn try new foods and others ways of life keep smiling mark you are an inspiration
I love getting to see all of these places around Thailand. Definitely makes me want to go back to explore the country 🤩
Same here.....🙏🇮🇳
Sadly closed until 2021. Never thought I'd live to see countries closed for business.😟
@@peterthermocline I know its insane and heartbreaking.
Yeah me too as I’m Thai but I still never know that we have a place like this one
Hearing how you describe the food is spot on. Hmong food is very simple and fresh and you can really taste the green and earth.
That looks like an extremely peaceful place to be and cold?! That's not the Thailand I'm use to.
Also Micah able to talk so much now! His Thai and English coming along nicely :)
Love this Mark. You will never understand how you made me feel today.... my Hmong people were the most hated, they tried to get rid of us. But I thank you and your videos... you make the world a better place , may the good spirits be with you and surround you with wealth and happiness . Thank you .
When you inhaled that fresh mountain air... i felt that
Rewatching this again. Thank you for showing your support & appreciation for Hmong food. Watched you from day 1 & have no regrets following you!

I just started taking This language classes, Does it get easier as it goes along? I am have a hard time remembering all the words and tones right now but i would like to know more so i can speak to the locals in markets such as this. Thanks for sharing.
Melissa! Awesome :) Keep up the good work, the tones are definitely tricky (for non-tonal language speakers like us), super cool seeing you commenting here :) Have a great day!
That's so nice you, your husband Joel and nanny all together.
husband Joel and nanny? oh dear!
@@princessnyeni5548 was wondering as well. Lol, maybe just a typo
Joel is not his husband? And the girl is not the nanny? They all are great actors than. Mark and Joel look and act like they are in love with each other. Sorry my bad. Mark has to be bi the way he acts and talks
I've always wanted to see in person terracing on a hillside. I have been to Chiang Mai though and love it., That food looked delicious.

Awesome comment Peterson :)
I miss Thailand 😕 I went in summer 2015 as a birthday heritage trip for myself and brought along 2 of my friends. First time ever I meant my mom side of the family. Be safe & healthy 🙏
Looked like a nectarine, cross between plum and peach.
Thank you for featuring the Hmong culture. I love watching your videos Mark!!

You’re amazing stay blessed stay safe and healthy during quarantine🥺
Thx ×× you too.
I absolutely love when Joel and Mark's family explore together just awesome human beings so much love from Minnesota Joel and Mark 🙃
Only Joel would make Mark eat a cookie after five years lol. But he does know Mark’s preferences, not sweet but dark cacao coffee cookies.
He also tries so hard to imitate Mark in every way. A huge compliment to Mark, I think.
Tony Towers He is Mark’s family friend. Don’t judge Joel.
@@entertainmentasia16 Who is judging? Where did I judge? I said it as I see it. I am entitled to my opinion, as are you. I still say that, with Mark, he is very sycophantic.
I enjoy watching these shows but Joel pisses me off. Tries to be exactly like mark
Tony Towers to be fair, at one point we all imitated Mark at the dinner table 😃
Finally! A video of Hmong people on your channel! Thanks!

I absolutely love this kind of content from you Mark. Local stuff in Thailand is so awesome to see and taste.
“That’s just pure herb”
When you take a hit of the good stuff.
I actually wanted to visit European countries after the lockdown but man Mark Weins convinced me to visit Thailand first! the food, the coffee and the culture really made me gravitate towards Thailand.
Can you do a video eating some of your mother-in-law’s best dishes?!
Love that you’re sharing my cultural people and food. We appreciate it
