Great playing and video Pete! Thanks for demonstrating clean tones with the 2290. It definitely makes it easier to hear the nuances of what the delay line and surrounding modulation effects are doing more easily, and you've done the direct comparison to the rack unit better than anyone else has, so far.
I own two original 2290 rack units and they are a main part of my guitar sound. I also have two of the new 2290 P pedals, and I think they are 95 - 97% accurate to the rack units, which is as close as any company could ever get, considering that digital modeling is being implemented to re-create the sound of much analog circuitry in the case of the 2290.
The 2290 rack units are 90% analog circuitry from the front to back ends of the signal path through the units. The analog opamp based preamp and analog feedback path for the digital delay line are paramount ingredients of the signature sound of the 2290, and tc electronic engineering team in Denmark lead by Asger Lundsgaard Hansen did a remarkable job of recreating all of it. There's a high frequency emphasis in the analog preamp of the original rack units that adds about a 3dB rise around 12kHz, which is what gives the delay repeats their bright and crystalline shimmery tone. tc electronic were able to reproduce this behavior about perfectly in the 2290 P.
What I love most about the 2290 P is it's ability to integrate with my other pedals. Try putting a Strymon Volante in front of it... pure heaven! The pedal version is a lot more flexible in terms of integration with other stereo pedals, due to it's stereo inputs!
The rack unit has only a mono input, so having stereo inputs on a 2290 now is also a huge advantage. We are in a new era now where a lot more people's guitar rigs are stereo, especially with true stereo amp simulation pedals like the Strymon Iridium, UA Dream/Ruby/Woodrow, and many others in that stereo amp-in-a-box form factor. I can now run a stereo amp modeler pedal into a real stereo 2290 without losing the stereo imaging of any stereo pedal effects that are positioned before the stereo amp modeler pedal. It also means that I don't need a Bob Bradshaw rack system to get a studio quality signal path with effects in stereo, using simple pedals and patch chords. No patching system necessary, with this level of flexibility.
With a tc electronic 2290 P, an Eventide H90 and something like the Strymon Volante to cover magnetic echo, we now have a rig more powerful than the refrigerator [H3000/2290/PCM70] industry standard Bradshaw rack of previous era, but also one that will fit on a Pedaltrain Nano in the overhead bin on a commercial flight for people like myself who need to travel for work.

I bought a TC Nova delay years ago, which was based on this! And I love it. When I came in to some money I was like " I have to get the Strymon timeline" so I did. And it's a great delay with all you need. But, it doesn't sound better than my Nova delay. To the point that, someone was selling one in the box for 100 bucks a year ago so I bought it and put it on my acoustic board and my Strymon is just for home use now! TC are awesome, really underrated company!

I had the 2290 rack maxed ver. and sold it when I bought an AxeFX 2…..big mistake. I bought the pedal and super happy. With all the technology we have now it is easier to replace the older gear like Boss did with the SDE3000 EVH, Eventide with the 9 series pedals etc.
I’d like to see a TC 1210 spacial pedal and maybe the parametric eq in pedals. Seems like good timing for the old rack gear to be refreshed and brought back to the masses. 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻
Thanks for another amazing review vid… I enjoyed watching even though I already had it. Keep Rock’n Pete🤘🏻

Thanks for putting this together for everybody people that trust your dedication to tone and the variations you can get with a lot of this equipment I like doing the same but I get stuck on like just a couple of perfect sounds but I need to throwing some more influence some of these modulating sounds that have these really. Iridescent qualities and I got stuff to do that so I just had to throw one of those in my regular mix to have a little bit more enhancement and maybe come up with something really beautiful and melodically interesting it is always good to listen to you and scoping out all these variations of sound and tone

I thought I was hearing the pedal gating the repeats in the pedal v rack comparison, but upon replay, I noticed you had muted the gtr. In the "rack" take, the overtones sorta rumble through and sound huge. But with a few more replays, and some mental interpolation, I'm happy to opine that the pedal would sound precisely the same as the unmuted passage. (Not a complaint btw! Making demos, editing, precise performances for a tough audience: you succeed in spades as they say.)

    Nice. Shockingly nice.
I love how people doubt these brands (behringer/tc electronics). These companies are more “for the artist” than most companies. They understand affordability. They understand their market. Starving artists, lol. Patents have expired… the brand names need to wake up and realize other companies can now replicate their products at a much cheaper cost and at times make major improvements. I dont need a gucci hand bag to look good… i always look good.

After the BOSS SDE-3000EVH Dual Digital Delay pedal came out last tear, I did my homework and scored three #HolyGrail 1980s Digital Delay Rack Units. The more buttons and LED displays the better!!!
Roland SDE-3000A (Same Delay Chip is in the BOSS DD-2/3 Digital Delay Pedal)
    TC Electronics 2290
KORG SDD-3000 (Yes they had a pedal version too)
Then BOOM TC Electronics releases the TC 2290P pedal.
BONUS: BOSS released the RE-202 Space Echo Pedal in 2023 Too!!! It is based on the Legendary Roland Space Echo Unit.

One of my Achilles Heels on guitar is I have no natural ability to play "against" an echo to get a rhythm going, like Pete does here for the bed track. My brain tries (and succeeds!) to make me play right in time with the echo. I've gotta work on that!! lol This delay is a beast! Sounds fantastic! One important reason for using the rack model in the ninetys was the 5 effektloops on the back.
They could be used for ekstra pedals that you switched on/off with presets, but you also used them for channel swithcing on the Mesa Boogie pre-amps.

Yeah I'm trying to play kind of the old John Petrucci but not like him but just with his ideas for all kind of songs that's kind of a tricky or tricky thing to learn because you're using major chords mixed with minor chords mixed with Triads mixed with sus chords mixed with 7/9 and 13 etc etc and making them all blend into a composition that has substance and guts to it but running in between melodic sounds that have classical variations but always coming back to the beat but subjecting everything that combines into a composition yeah it's really the epitome of musical aptitude

Wow you ain't kiddin about the out of phase thing, I am listening to this on a tablet with only one speaker ( previewing it really, normally I would be listening on good headphones) and the initial part delay is COMPLETELY inaudible, I mean zero repeats / tails are heard until you tweaked the pan control and took it out of stereo mode. It is 180 degrees out of phase left to right and it cancels completely except for some of the mp4 / mp3 audio compression leaving tiny aliasing style artifacts in the trails where the lossy audio data compression algorithm leaves slight differences in the left and right channels compared to the source right and left signals.
The effect is not mono compatible at all apparently . That's wild.

10 secondes max delay for the 2290p is too short for those like me who are into expementations. The original 2290 could be upgraded. Wish this pedal can get an update to double the delay time by reducing the bitrate by 2 for example! Or even reducing the bitrate by 4! Thu's having 40 sec of delay! Please please please TC!😊 Or even make it into a mono delay of 20 secondes! I will buy two more pedals if you can do that!

HA! That's funny Pete, I had the older version of the Digitech DSP128! (blackface) I sold it when I got the H3000 in 1988.
On that program 33, it's panning both the direct and delayed signal with the modulation in the delay side. That's why there's so much movement.
This is in my humble opinion, is the best of the digital delays that ever came out in the 80s. I'm glad TC Electronic did this in a pedal.
...Now if they would just reissue the 1210 in a pedal or even in rack form, I'll be first in line to get one!

      Yes a 1210 pedal!

Absolutely! If the pedal is digital, then I will still buy an SCF to have analog in front.

@@Robstafarian I have that pedal too. It's a great combination with the SCF in front, the SCF also does a great stereo wide image. That's what I'll be using it for when I get the next 2290P. I'll use one 2290 for the chorus/flange effects and feed that into the second one for the delays. That should be a glorious combination.

Anyone know if it has an analog dry signal path?

original is analog but has a pre that can boost and fatten the dry signal.

So I'm listening with headphones because it's very late/early and this pedal seems to have what I have always chased - 3D. In about 1978, in a music store (remember those?) the store guy had a Roland JC-120 with a Space Echo tape unit. He handed me the guitar and said, "just hit a C chord." Fortunately one of the 4 or 5 chords i knew at the time. But it was stunning. And I never forgot it. Could not afford/justify gear like that of course. Nowadays, you can get some great sounds relatively easily and cheaply, but this unit seems to have the elusive quality. Thanks for breaking it down and getting to the essentials of it Pete. It seems very tweakable in an intuitive way, which is very cool. I like it a lot.

Pete, great solo on the demo. I used a 2290 in the 80's and 90's. Beautiful delay.

Listening to this demo all I can think of are the sounds of 80-ies. You just understand on how many records from that time period you have had this sounds.
Sure it's first delay effect but to my ears it's chorus first. Definitely modulation effect. Delay just comes as nice supplement to the tone you get.
Pretty much poster child of the digital delays of back then. No tone roll off just pristine but modulated repeats.
We often forget how gear "limitation" was shaping music in a way that great musician's were working around it and finding a way to make art with gear on hands. It took some some until delays could do long delays. Though people found the way to use what they had in great manner.
As always it's fascinating that Pete makes practically a real song for every demo and incorporate best use of the peace of equipment that he demos. No reusing of the same phrases over and over again.
    Epic stuff.

Great demo, as always. I’ve been loving this pedal. Picked it up right at release and have been using it for guitar, synth, and even as an effects insert when mixing. Absolutely fabulous unit.

A 2290 has always been my #1 dream piece of gear, and I am losing my mind over this pedal right now. If ever there was a signal processor worthy of the "legendary" designation, it is the 2290.

Isn't it funny how many manufacturers are latching on to what Behringer has been doing lately.... releasing modern (and cheaper) versions of classics from their past stable of legendary fx/synths? Love the price point.. love the sounds! That solo at the beginning... put it on your next album, don't change a thing!! Nuf Said.

Pure Awesomeness Pete 🤟🎶That modulated sound is much like "Purple Rain" and makes me wonder if Prince used that and not chorus!? Hmm... and yes if you had one "back in the day" you were either a studio owner or a session player/touring musician as they were expensive!! I had a Digitech PDS 1002 which was amazing for its time, no pun intended LOL

OK, so the thing obviously sounds awesome, but here's my question. With TC's modern-day less-than-stellar reputation for reliability/longevity, and even worse customer service, is this delay still that much of a shiny must-have?
